Ankle felt good tonight! yay I was actually able to hit 10 infinities for the first time since hurting it. It's still not all the way there but I felt like I could play.
My comma key is giving me shit. Damn it.
Anyhow, I did whirls to start. They're getting reliable. Practiced linking into an out of them. Example: Pixie legover > whirl > bops > repeat on other side. Or pixie butterfly > whirl > bops > repeat other side. I can't pdx whirl. I'm too nervous to really go for it but it'll come I think.
Then paradons. They're good now. Mid run confidence. Link into them easily and out of them with a bunch of thing more interesting than bops. I'd call them 75% dialed.
Barflies. I can't do them. Nope. Something's not right. Will keep trying. There's no reasonable explanation why I can't do them. Shouldn't be that hard.
Then atomic mirage practice. Hit a lot on strong side, none on weakside. Man that set is hard for me. I guess so is stepping set. So I guess I'm basically only good at one set (pixie). Which is depressing. But I'm going to learn those mother effers if it kills me.

Modified, I've been keeping something from you...
All this time, I've been smoking. Cigars, not cigarettes, but still not a good thing. I inhale them sometimes. Ok ok, I inhale them all the time. They're little cigars, closer to cloves than anything, so it's not as bad as you think, but bad. Anyhow, tomorrow is my quit day. I've quit cigarettes before, and I've quit these same cigars before, so I'm certain I can do it. But wish me luck anyways.
Also, I feel like drinking is nearing the end of the road for me. I barely drink anymore. Only on weekends, and then not too much. But the pointless calories seems silly. So I think I might be a "special occasions and random once in awhile" type of drinker. When I think about being that type of drinker, I feel good. When I think about having drinks tomorrow because it's the weekend I feel bad. So it seems like an easy decision. Plus, no booze will help my weight loss.
We'll see.

well, more than half way through first day of quitting. withdrawal is somewhat bad, but I can deal.
I shredded with Brian today. First time I've seen him in like 6 months or longer, and first time I've shredded (rather than practice) for that period of time too I think. First off, he right away said "Boy you're thinner!" so that was a good start, because he didn't even know that I was trying to lose weight.
Anyhow, Brian is about as good as he was before. Maybe can string longer and more consistently, but his links are too easy for how good he is. But he's totally fun to play with anyways. I did pretty good considering I've been practicing small combos and not runs. Hit everything I've been practicing at least once today. And did a nice job of using both sides. Compared to how I used to play, I'd say I was 50% as good as then, but in some ways (because of playing both sided) I was better than before.

It's about time for the "How do you feel?" part of my program I believe. I might be jumping the gun by a few days, but here goes anyways:
Well, I feel really good about my weekend. I got pretty buzzed Friday night and smoked a ton of cigars as a sort of 'farewell' to that lifestyle. Then, saturday morning, as planned, I stopped smoking cigars. I also decided that having drinks during the weekend as I usually do makes me feel kind of shitty/lethargic, and makes me feel like I have to "catch up" on being healthy again when Monday rolls around. So, I experimented with not really drinking this weekend. I had 1 good beer with dinner on Saturday, and 2 good beers while watching the Eagles beat the Cowboys (holy shit that was great by the way) on Sunday - I felt that this amount of alcohol was enough to not feel deprived of life's finer things, but not so much to make my stomach look fat. Well, I don't know if it's coincidence or if I'm less bloated than usual because of no booze, but I'm down another notch on my belt this morning. I have to get new pants really soon, my existing pants look sort of silly and bunchy around the waist. I was wearing a 36 inch waist (and that was getting tight), but I definitely need a 34 now. When I was married 6 years ago, I was a 32. That might be possible again. Shit, I might be able to get down to 180 again in the long term! I haven't been on the scale recently, but I'd guess I'm in the 215-220 range (from a high of 240). And those numbers are deceiving because I've added a lot of muscle tone during the past couple months - muscle is heavier than fat. In other words, it looks like I've lost 25-30 pounds, but the scale probably says 20-25. Keep plugging along. The less beers thing should speed up the progress considerably.
Anyhow, I'm still not smoking, so that's good. I had no doubt. Withdrawal is over already (cigars don't have as many chemicals as cigarettes, so the withdrawal is much easier in my opinion).
This morning I achieved tripling the number of pushups I can do at a time since the start of my workout regimine. I'm not giving you details yet, because I'm nowhere near my goal number
but I'm still pleased to see that too. I need to increase the weight on arm curls, and I need more decline on my situp board because current setup (about 30 degree decline) is too easy. I think I will install a chinup bar too. I think chinups are a more useful strength builder than arm curls. That's why I switched to pushups too >> I want to build strength on exercises that use my body in real life types of movements.
So, how do you feel?
- I look thin in clothes again
- Very soon, I'll be in "beach shape" for the first time in years
- Very soon, I'll be breathing easier from no cigars
- I'm already sleeping better (wife says snoring is nearly gone) due to weight loss
- I'm still eating well and not missing the junk I used to eat
- I'm having fun with footbag. I don't think I'll make big improvements very quickly, but the good news is that it isn't bothering me that it takes me forever to learn any effing thing about this effing sport. ha ha
- On the other hand, I've hit at least a dozen things that I never hit before (either weakside versions of things, or entirely new concepts)
- So, I feel good. Encouraged. I used to define myself by my physical self (was in very good shape then) and athletic prowess (was very good basketball player). Not that I want to be that again, because I define myself by so many more things today, but I want to be in good enough shape, that those things can be a part of me again.

My mother in law was over for dinner tonight. I haven't seen her in about 4-5 weeks (which is really unusual because she's lives nearby) because she's been helping her other daughter who just had her 4th child.
Anyhow, when I walked in the first words out of her mouth was a nice comment about howshe was surprised about how thin I was looking. That felt good.
So then I went out to footbag. The withdrawal is making me more tired than usual, and my patience is pretty nonexistent. So I went out and got pissed at everything I tried. It's difficult >> I intuitively understand that I don't have a ton of natural ability, and that improving will be difficult. But at the same time, I never quite accept that. Every other sport I've ever played, I work hard at and I become one of the best. This sport is different. I work hard, and don't really get much better. But, I'm just going to keep pushing. I think I can do it. But tonight was just me missing atomic sets over and over and over. and over. and over.

Hey Danny, Thanks! I checked out your blog. Loving the bunny suit. Hoping your foot gets better and better. It's funny because I think you meant to have your reply inserted right after my positive post 2 posts above, but I was too fast for you and I slipped in a nice negative post in the meantime. So it looks like you're replying to my negative post. Ha ha.

Did I tell you guys that I'm seriously job searching now? It's been 2 years at my current spot, and I'm ready for some growth (cough cough, more money.. just kidding.. partially kidding). My current company has its good points, but is a smaller company and is privately held, so there are certain cultural things that I'm not into. And I report to the senior VP, so there's no room for upward promotions unless he leaves (and he's totally a lifer).
So, in case you have a job lead for me, here's my story:
- Undergrad degree in economics
- Graduate degree, MBA
- Started in IT 10 years ago
- Moved over to business/process analysis (basically figuring out how best to set up operations or computer systems)
- Moved into project management
- Currently a product manager (product mangement, product marketing, purchasing/supply chain/inventory management, vendor relationship management etc. etc.)
- Have managed employees for past 7 years
Help me get a job!
My mindset this time around is: "Thus far in my career I have sought *jobs* in order to round out a skill set. With that foundation in place, I am now more interested in finding the right *organization* that I can contribute to over a long period of time". So, I'm looking at the Wyeth's and Vanguards of the world. Also considering other companies of course, but if I could land at one of these name brand organizations that has lots of room for vertical and horizontal growth, that'd be ideal. Especially Wyeth since it's 5 minutes from my house.

The apple I'm eating for breakfast looks ripe, sounds ripe when you bite it, and is completely and utterly tasteless. A lady that works here is an apple lover and says this time of year to try "pink lady" apples. She says they're the only ones with taste right now. Will try that. Apples are my favorite breakfast food because you get such great energy from them.

We get our annual bonus on Friday. The bonus works like this:
- You can earn up to 10% of your annual pay
- The 10% is broken into 60% sales revenue goal, 20% sales profit margin goal, 20% personal performance.
- Because of some strategic decisions, I think we'll miss the profit margin portion, but we've definitely hit the sales revenue goal. And my personal performance was very good. So bonus should be nice, I’m just not sure how nice.
- Besides the annual company bonus, myself and a couple other managers compete for some extras too. I’ve kicked the hell out of my goals, so I have a good shot to pad things by maybe another couple thousand there too. But again, it’s all up in the air until Friday.

My ankle is sore, and so is my heal. But I’m going to footbag tonight. I think I’m just going to do atomics and that’s it. I think I’ll continue to work on atomics until I hurt myself and need to quit the game, or until I get them… whichever happens first. Damn atomics.

Yaaaay, I hit weakside atomic op mirage (which I'm pretty certain is called atom smasher so that's what I'm going to call it from now on) tonight. I've been hitting them on the strong side at about a 30% success rate. I don't think I've ever hit even one on the weakside before tonight. I footed it about 10 times, and hit it once. So that's good. Another 50 practices from now and maybe I'll be good at that damn set.
Bob R.
yo Bob! I'm glad to hear you're enjoying footbag again so much! props on the new moves!
Not sure if you remember, but I happen to live in Phoenixville, pa, about 10 minutes from the Collegeville area. I'll be in town for most of winter break-now 'til the middle of January-shredding in my basement. If you're interested, I've gotten a tad better and would love to shred sometime! Let me know !

Sometimes good days can have really bad parts, and bad days can have pretty good parts. Today was sort of a bad day. Piggy is getting surgery to remove a fatty tumor really soon, and today his other leg wasn't working. So I had to drop $200 on a vet visit ($115 of which was a blood test and some other things that will come off of the cost of surgery) and now I'm not supposed to kennel him tomorrow as previously planned. So trip to see parents is slightly more complicated. Also, Hertz rental cars called me today and said they ran out of mini-vans. We'd rented a mini-van for the trip. I said to the guy: "Ever see that Seinfeld eppisode? 'you can take the reservation, you just can't keep the reservation'". He didn't laugh. I wasn't laughing either. How do you rent a car only to find out they can't rent you the car? Isn't that their entire job function? I'll end up getting a severe discount or something. I'm a good negotiator. But, that's still another sucky thing. Then work is stressy. And quitting smoking is stressy. Whine, bitch, moan. Whatever.
Anyhow, the good part was kicking after work. I footed another dozen weak atom smashers, and hit another 4. And on strong side, I played out of a dozen atom smashers including atom smasher > paradon > run.
And the even better part was that I weighed in (note to anyone losing weight... Weigh in BEFORE you go on a holiday weekend if you want to save your self esteem). I have lost 32 pounds so far. Yeah baby. Wow, 32 pounds. Just saying it is nice.
To reward myself and to be a bit ironic, I'm having a cold beer to wash down the day. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Yum.

had a total blast with Ian and Jake yesterday. Just a fun vibe playing and joking around. It was hard for me to really remember how to shred instead of just doing drills, but I had a few nice runs. And I got really great tips from both of them on some things I've been having trouble with. Plus we had beer and cookies while playing pool afterwards, so that was fun.
Highlights.. I hit just about everything I've been practicing on both sides at one point or another. I also hit Pixie DLO on my strong side. Pixie whirl only on strong side too. Hit 4 back to back ripwalks. Some 1/2 decent runs.
Ian is fun to play with. Super nice guy and totally different game than people I've played with so that was cool. Got some good ideas. I predict he will have a very nice quantum set.
Jake is so close to figuring out how to not drop the ball. He's got all the tricks, he just drops on dumb stuff sometimes. When he eliminates that, watch out. He had a couple really WOW runs yesterday. You'll see them on vid shortly. Plus Jake has always been one of my favorite guys to see - he's one of the first people that I had direct influence on getting interested in the game, so we go way back. I was happy for both of the guys to meet my kids too.
Subaru Impreza.. That was funny
Now I'm going to resume gaining 5 pounds while eating crap and sitting around. Whatever, a couple days off the wagon is good for the mind.

I tried really hard not to catch the cold that everyone else had, but I caught it. Luckily I took imume booster and cold eeze 2 days ahead of time and into the cold, and I'm already coming out of the cold after only being sick for 2 or 3 days. Really sucks to have wasted any of my very rare vacation on a head cold, but at least I've been able to minimize its impact.
My ankle is like a stone. When I play, I can't really crank it, and when I'm done it turns to stone.
So, I'm playing tomorrow with Barrett and Drew (duffelbag) and Brian at my local YMCA. So I took it easy playing today. Plus, I'm still getting over the cold, so I didn't have much energy. I concentrated on good posture today. Jake had noticed that I hunch into certain moves, and that when I had better posture, my tricks were better. I think that wil be helpful.
I got fiber optic phone/TV/internet hooked up today. My internet connection is crazy fast now, and I'm loving that. I also can get Comcast now which allows me to see my local sports teams.

My ankle is a stone. Urgh, how long is it going to be like that? It takes 10-15 minutes to loosen up to the point where I can play with it, then I get about 30-40 minutes of play in, and then I have to stop because it turns to stone again.
Oh well, I had fun playing with Drew, Barrett and Brian today. I was happy to find that Drew and Barrett are not complete newbies - I just don't find it fun to play with people learning toe stalls etc. Drew has really great ankle crank but no clippers at all. His toe foundations are good. I gave him some drills that will allow him to improve very quickly. Barrett is built like Kaiser Ahmad. He's strong so I think he'll have he'll have a very powerful game as he progresses. Both very nice guys.
Brian continues to annoy me that he refuses to learn the names of any tricks. He's always like "I can't link interesting things together" so I'll suggest a couple of ideas, and then he replies "I don't know any of those stupid trick names".. Then he continues to hit one trick, bop for awhile, one trick, bop for awhile, drop... complain again. Drives me nuts. He could be so much better.
Anyhow, I had a good day. Hit 6 b2b ripwalks. Lots of weakside pixie starting runs and midrun. Atom smasher > paradon > DLO > eggbeater to start a run. Some 20+ contact runs that weren't overly bop (though more than I'd like). Hit both whirls a bunch. Pixie whirl again. Pixie DLO again. 4 b2b drifters. No weakside atomic at all today. That's my sore ankle and I can't jump off it. Focusing on good posture allowed a lot of things to be better today.

Hi, Sorry to hear about the ankle.
Wanted to let you know that your advice on paradons really came in handy. Although they clearly take more energy I played for the first time today since our last session and they felt like bop.
I spent about 5 hours trimming all of the footage so that it was purely strings, and I think I am finally ready to look at it again and put it to music.
Good luck recovering and keeping with the good habits. I've been going through similiar disciplinary challenges myself recently and I appreciate the company.
Can't wait to see how the atomic sets work out. I'll give quantums sets a try this weekend.

Good luck recovering and keeping with the good habits. I've been going through similiar disciplinary challenges myself recently and I appreciate the company.
Can't wait to see how the atomic sets work out. I'll give quantums sets a try this weekend.
Posture - Good point Ken, I'm going to watch some Ales footage because that's subconsciously who I was thinking of I think. Also David is someone I think plays with good posture. It's helping me a lot already.
Oh, I forgot, yesterday I also hit blur > atom smasher on my strong side.
Played today and kept it a little simpler to avoid stone ankle syndrome.
Ian, I'm so glad paradon is clicking for you. I think that'll be a huge strength (linking into and out of it, sets before it etc.) for you. Really looking forward to the footage, but somewhat dreading it too. I played so much more like my old self (in terms of rhythm and cool links) yesterday, and I was so clumsy when I played with you, but it will still be a good learning experience for me to see myself on tape.
Janis, thanks for the link to the ankle stuff. Much of that is what my physical therapist also told me to do, and I've been doing them. I just think my ankle sprain is going to linger for awhile. Sigh.
Hit ripwalk > bur today. Tons and tons and tons of paradons on both sides. Lots and lots of pixies. I hit every one of my pixie tricks about 10 times each. Tomorrow I think I'll work on linking some tricks as a change of pace.

Spent some more time editing the video, putting it to music, etc. I prefer the raw footage though. It is more useful. None of us are spectacular in it, all my big links are cropped by the view, etc. I'm trying to compress it all now and then thinking of a way for you to get to it.
Congrats on your recent post! Makes me want to go kick, myself.
EDIT:
Here is a youtube link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1F6XLer9oj0
You may have to click on the first of two buttons under the screen so that it adjusts itself horizontally (youtube compressed it oddly but had a fail-safe for it
)
This was from the first ten of thirty minutes of condensed shred, so I may make another-one that includes some of my better strings, atomic-dyno, etc.

Thanks Ian! I really appreciate that you took the time to do that. I was also right to dread seeing it... I'm effing horrible! ha ha.. I'm laughing, but I mean it when I say I suck. But the good news is that in my last session w/ Drew and Barrett, I was able to improve a lot of the suckiness. I played about twice as good my most recent shred session as compared to that garage session, so I'm going to call my horrible play "rusty" play since I've really just been practicing sinle tricks. I hate my posture in that vid, but it's good because that's something I'm improving. Also, after just one shred session, my string length went up quickly. So I think I'm ready to start balancing single trick practice with string practice so that I can play better in shred sessions.
Today's session was worthless practically. I was so tired. I did figure out barrage I believe. I used to do the first dex whirly, but I think it's better to concentrate on straight up knee and two DATW style dexes, I think it's easier to clean. I also wasn't too far from toe set barrage which is a trick I see infrequently but always love when I do see it.
edit: I also footed weakside DATW (in/out direction). Hitting that on the weakside is something I would have previousy told you is impossible for me, so I'm pretty happy about that. I think within a week or so I'll have it.
Thanks again Ian!!
