Overclocking

Any computer speed junkies in here?

I just hit 3.2ghz with my E6600 on air. 800mhz OC, nothing too amazing. Idle temp is 30 and load is 57, on 1.44 volts. I have a p180b with only 2 120mm fans, so its pretty damn quiet as well.

For anyone who does know what the hell im talking about, you can get like a 25% increase in computer speed for free, by overclocking! Its fun! Its basically like buying a new processor, but 200-300 dollars cheaper.

Does computer speed matter much in web surfing? Id probably do better to get rid of all the bs programs on my comp to speed things up I think?

With today's computers, I doubt you would notice any difference in your internet experience if you overclocked your computer.

My computer is basically designed to be overclocked - Q6600 and I have 3 120mm fans as well as a 200mm fan. However at this stage I haven't bothered to try and overclock at all. Actually I'm inspired. I'm going to do it right now!

Ok overclocked by 20%, which was as much as my bios would allow without having to fiddle around with things too much.

Will give an update after testing things with Crysis. I have over a gig of GPU (2 8800 GTS) but it still struggles a little with full graphical settings.

oooooh you have 2 8800s! Thats sweet. I just have the one, 2 would be nice to use the SLI function but they arent cheap.
I wasnt inspired by Crysis eh...i played the demo. Its ridiculous that you can have such a powerful setup and it still struggles!

Definitely COD4! Possibly the best game ever.

When I get my new computer I'll try overclocking the one I use now. Like Ian said, I'm not confident enough in my skills to do it when I only have one good computer to use.

I have a 8800GT. It is a beast for an extremely reasonable price.

Q6600 w/stock fan
2gb ocz pc-6400
320mb 8800gts

My video card is overclocked, and I've overclocked systems before but for some reason anything I do above about 200mhz increase causes my system to crash... It's weird, because I've monitored the heat and that's not the problem. I kind of gave up, I think I might try again right now though.

Crysis is absolutely amazing...in a few years when the general public can afford to play it at high settings. COD4>crysis for sure though.

*Edit* Btw, what hardware monitoring software do you guys use?

When I used to play quake, I'd overclock my video card and my processor.

It was fun, but I don't play FPS anymore so there's no need to these days.

I'm learning to build myself a hackintosh now.

I dont think crysis is very cpu intensive. Notice any difference?

Yeah everything on my computer runs better actually.

Crysis not so much. It is an amazing looking game though. I played it with all the settings on "very high" and full anti aliasing for a little bit, and although the frame rate was probably less than 10 fps, it looked incredible (if I just stood still

)

At the moment, I don't think much overclocking is really necessary, since I was happy with the speed before, but perhaps for video editing it will be more helpful

Definately fun when some poor motherfucker heeds your advice and goes out and wastes about 500 bucks trying to save a little bit of money.

I wouldn't call it free, either. There is no way you can get a 25% increase in clock speed without buying something better than the stock fan.

Maybe Intel did something about their shitty fans with the Core 2 processors then, but there's no way you could do that on the prescott processors.

I still strongly oppose the idea of recommending everyone to engage in such a 'fun' activity.
