I think the number of people who said they use lead is scary.

I don't touch lead bags any more, I am willing to bet that probably nobody here has any idea how dangerous the shit is.

I once had a blood test come back with an elevated lead level (from a different hobby). It is easy to ask a doctor to check your blood, probably not a bad precaution for those who kick or stitch with lead.

I've found myself in the habit of fondling a lot of lead bags these days. I don't know why. I'm guessing that, deep down, I have something in me that wants to be exposed to lead poisoning and become retarded from it.

yeah, i think im gonna stop using lead.. Im almost out of it and steel is 20 bucks cheaper. The only thing is that the lead i had was super duper small. The smallest steel i can get is twice the size, but it'll just take some time to get used to.

okay so my mom is a clothing designer and sew teddy bears as a hobby, i started getting into footbag and now she makes me footbags for fun, but we ordered tungsten filler and i guess its good, but like can someone send me a link of good shit to put in, even if its a combo of stuff from different sites, and where to find it reasonbly cheap?

Here is where I order my steel shot. And for the size 7 steel shot, I've taken a look and it's relatively much cheaper than Ballistics.

I also kind of like the feel of this steel shot, as though its' surface area is rough and powdery rather than conventially shiny and smooth. I'm guessing it's from their tumbling process that they add the zinc-coating to pass off as plating.

The only bad thing I've had with this site is that some of the steel shot that you get may have a few that are rusted. The entire container is not full of rusted steel shot; just a select few that you can pick off and throw away. I routinely sift my batch for rusted shot every now and then, but this process may prove to be annoying for some people.

I used to use that steel stuff from ballistics and it always rust on me or other people. I felt lame telling people to make sure they're bags were always dry and shit. Its cheap fill, but its only good in really small quantities mixed with other stuff. I don't bother using it anymore.

Steel is real bad. It rusts and ruins bags from the inside out.

Lead rules and there is no one that is qualified that says lead is dangerous to use in footbags. For example, I asked my doctor, my high school and college chemistry teachers. You're scaring people away from buying good bags on false pretenses.

I'm pretty neutral on the lead vs. steel debate, but your comment on "it takes less effort to not cut open..." is not the point. People have pets, young siblings, etc. that could all get a hole of a lead bag. and eat it.

I agree though, lead bags are good. Tungsten is just the same, or better, though. If given the choice between a really good lead bag and a really good steel/tungsten bag, I would choose tungsten.

Uhhhhhhhh... are you kidding me?

The smaller the better, of course! I've only found steel shot (in bearing form) in 0.100" diameter as the smallest. If you want smaller, planetfootbag steel shot is your best bet, or a steel milling company that you can find near your area. If you're using lead, 0.100" and below is great.

I use steel shot, and I use the steel shot from the link that I provided in my previous post. I also use a combo filler like Pengpeng said, so it's hard to describe off the bat.

As for the steel vs. lead debate - whatever. I don't care about it anymore. I still use lead if people request it. I still play with lead bags. I just do my best to keep them away from my dog, my nephew and niece, and off the floor. Keeping it off the floor as an extra precaution is seriously annoying, but at least I have peace of mind that it won't end up being picked off and eaten.

I just thought up an interesting challenge for stitchers:

Sew up any type footbag you want, but only use fillers that you collect off of your floor. I'm sure there are plenty of stitchers out there that have a ton of spilled filler on their floor that they don't pick up in their daily lives.

This can be anything! Steel shot, lead shot, tungsten, bismuth, poly pellets, sead beads, aquarium rocks, etc etc etc! Just... uh... no mice excrement.

Let's make this challenge pass health inspections, 'kay?

Also, there's no rush at all, no time limit. I'm sure the combined filler on your floor wouldn't result in a 50-60 gram bag instantly (unless you're really messy with your filler). I think this type of challenge should be as stress free as possible as well, so do this in your free time. Like, if you collected filler on your floor and the resulted weight isn't to your specs, wait until you come to the occasion that you do spill filler on your floor. Then add that to your "fallen" batch!
