For all interested in results, I ended up placing 4th in Open Doubles Net with my partner Mike McCarthy (out of 9 teams), and 3rd in Open Singles Net out of 9 (or 10?) players. Essentially, I made the semifinals in both events, which was sweet. I had a good showing in my doubles semi but got stomped out pretty hard in my singles semi by Alexis Deschenes, the guy who went on to take the singles title. I won 50 bucks for 3rd place in singles though (my opponent scratched due to injury)!
I'll be sure to post any cool pictures or footage for your viewing pleasure if I come across anything cool. Oh I got to meet John Caveney, inventor of the modern day JimmyC Net Set and one of the best net players of all times. I also got to hang out with tons of cool people, including Mike Jauss (who has a blog).
I hit an ayatollah in one of my pool play matches (where you reach over the net and spike the bag into your opponents side of the net), which is extremely rare (happens once in 20-30 events or so). The match judge told me that I just did what he had been trying to do all of his life

Well, if you know that memphis has weekend sessions, why not inform them in advance of your intentions to come up at least 1 weekend a month (possibly 2, 3 or 4), so that they may put together a good session or sessions for you to attend. You could prolly stay overnight at someone's house and have both a Saturday kick and a Sunday kick.
Other that that, man, you just have to be motivated to practice certain skills on your own. Set up a net and practice spiking, practice serving, practiceconsec setting with both outsides, practice bag control by doing consec insides (as if with a freestyle bag).
Or move to a place with a net scene

i travel to memphis at least once every 2 months for a session; although i need to try it with a greater frequency. honestly, it's not like i play myself in singles every saturday, we have a decent scene in nashville... always 4-5 players at the court. however the level of play has been stagnent lately and a couple guys who are solid intermediates just cannot seem to improve on their skills any further. i've tried to incorporate more drills with practices, although this doesn't really seem to interest anyone. i don't think my problem is self-modivation (i have the practice space in my garage to prove it) it's getting the others modivated in the club.
how many players do you have in sata cruz? how often do you make the trip to chaos land? is mike m. back in cali now?
