So, on atomic set, my success has come when I lift my setting knee high. I think that's because when I set with a high straight knee, I get a nice straight set. But, I think I should try to achieve that same quality set while keeping my setting foot as close to the ground as possible. Seems to me that this would give me more time to dex.
Can anyone in the know confirm?

OK then, I'll read trick tips and watch vids.
Was under the weather last 2 days but played anyways. Yesterday, spent the majority of practice toying around with different methods of setting the ball during atomic set. Just about all the methods are achievable on the strong side, and weakside continues not to work at all. I think part of the key is to launch off the support leg while the ball is still on the foot of the set leg. It's almost launch/set at the same time, but definitely not set then launch from what I can tell. On my weakside, my heel was also "trailing" or just coming along for the ride. I concentrated on keeping my lower leg straight up and down. It's funny because my much stronger illusion is my much weaker atomic.

Wow, I understand this information from Yacine on stepping and atomic so much more now that I've been studying so much. I don't need tips anymore, this will do just fine.

I just noticed the whole "how many views" thing for blogs. I guess I knew it was there all along, but never really looked at it. I just hit the 5000 mark which oddly makes me feel a little connected to the community - someone is reading. I don't know why I care if anyone is reading, but I guess I do, because I took pleasure in realizing "5000 views". Ha ha, that's so immature of me. Whatever.

Kicked last night in the shred tent in the barn. I need new plywood soon, I only have 1/2" plywood down now, and it's ollllld plywood. I shred in the same spot (because I don't have a lot of room) and I can tell I'm starting to splinter the floor. It's kind of like that scene in Kill Bill where Uma repeatedly punches the wood plank until she breaks through it.
I'm getting more efficient on a lot of small things. For example, my strong mirage (by itself or as a component of a larger trick) >> my dex leg would straighten out a bit during the dex. I think it's more efficient to keep it more bent and really carve the dex. I saw that I do that properly on my weakside, so I re-learned my strong mirage. Yep, been kicking for over 10 years and I re-taught myself mirage last night. Ha ha. That's funny, but I think it's good too. All these little tweaks in form will cumulate to better things in the long run. I think so at least.
I spent most of the practice on atomic set. I applied Yacine's written tips (post above) to my atomic. They're helpful. My weak side kind of gets it, but the pop isn't there yet. I think most of it is just repititions are needed. I might just have to muscle through it on the weakside while form gets ingrained. On the strong side the atomic sometimes comes as high as chest height. I consider that a positive sign. I can now hit anything I want out of atom smasher on that side, and finally allowed myself to start hitting atomic butterfly on that side. As predicted, all the atom smasher practice makes atomic butterfly sooooo easy. Hit atomic butterfly > blur with ease.
I'm really looking forward to being done learning atomic so I can resume working on all the other things I'm interested in. But I just think I'm so close that getting distracted on other concepts right now wouldn't be worth it. Pixie and stepping will come quickly once I focus on them again. Spinning and ducking, same thing.
Tonight I'm going to watch the new TV we just got. It's a really nice flat screen and the picture is unbelievable. Just want to hang with the kids, then after they're asleep relax. Shred tomorrow.

Very true. And this makes me proud of where I am today with this sport. I have long since realized that I have nowhere near the natural talent of many players. And I don't have nearly the time or energy of a 18 year old to dedicate to pushing past my natural ability barriers. And my body hurts really bad after I play most days. But I play every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. And I play hard and I work at little things that come easily to others. And little by little I get better. I scream at the footbag sometimes, and other times I cheer for myself after some tiny improvement. I was once burned out on this sport and the community and being a promoter, and I came through the tunnel on the other side with the perspective that I have now. And I'm really glad. I'm having fun doing what I do, despite that the end will most likely not fully justify the means (i.e. All these hours will not ever make me a top player or anything close to it). So, cool post David, I liked it, and it made me thankful for the sport in this way.and then it taught me the biggest lesson of all. Which is: people in the sport get burned out. People in this sport stop playing, stop having that desire to go out and pound the concrete with the only reward being some sweat and online props.

Only played on Saturday this weekend because I was busy hanging the new TV and putting up a shelf for the components this weekend. It turned out really nice. I fished all the wires behind the wall, so there are no visible cables of any kind. And I built a nice shelf for the cable box etc. and stained it the same color as all the trim in the room. Looks really sharp. TV picture is amazing, watched football a lot yesterday. Now we're busy selling all my old components and speakers on craigs list. Streamlined operation now! Transferred all my favorite CD's onto an Ipod that we recently got. So the entire huge stereo cabinet with tons of components and huge speakers all around the room and monstrous TV have been reduced to flat screen hanging on the wall, shelf beneath TV with DVD/CD player, cable box, ipod dock. Niiiice. The room feels so much bigger with all the clutter gone.
Anyhow, footbag. Video taped my saturday session. It was a long one. My strong atomic is getting really strong. Weak is coming along. Weak stepping set is so weird >> my set barely goes up in the air at all. I must be rushing something because I can set nice and high for ducks or any other trick from that side. Something it causing the ball to just be really low which makes the set fairly useless. Will watch the vid this week to see. Nothing else interesting to report really.

Well, I decided last night that my stepping set is never going to pop the way I want it to unless I teach it to myself differently. I've been doing butterfly > blur as my main practice with the feeling that, of the basic stepping tricks, blur is the hardest one.
Now, instead, I'm going to do clipper > stepping toe stall repeatedly. The set just isn't straight enough, and my pop upward and outward on the dex is not high enough and wide enough or fast enough, and the timing just isn't fluid enough. So, I'm going to dial it back to the component for awhile to see how it goes.
Had a nice breakthrough on barrage in the last two practices. Hard to describe, but I pull my heel and push my heel through the dexes using my hamstring and all of the sudden the speed is much faster. Has helped on DATW too. Also, during the barrage I concentrate on not raising my leg too high (else I "the" the dexes). Have hit barrage > paradon a bunch. I think I can hit flurry on my strong side if I try it, but it's not time yet.
I haven't updated on my morning lifting for awhile. I'm doing pushups, chinups, and situps 3 mornings per week. I could bench press and arm curl all day long, but pushups and chinups are so much harder and work so many more muscles. My body is responding. Starting to really get some tone, and my strength on common every day tasks is noticeably increased. So I'm going to keep at it. It's a lifestyle type of workout. I can do it in 20 minutes, and I can see results. Only another 50 years of this or so.

Lots of stepping toe stalls last night. Strong side was popping up to about chest height on many sets. Weakside was at least breaking the plane of my upper leg. Need a couple more practices of that before I resume working on blur etc.
Edit: nice... I've made the last 10 consecutive posts in here. Give me some encouragement please
Last night was one of those "Damn it, I'm never going to get any better" types of practices. The gloomy winter, combined with frustration on components that everyone else seems to learn in 2 practices, is getting me down.
Edit: nice... I've made the last 10 consecutive posts in here. Give me some encouragement please

Seconded. I went to NYJ last month without having seriously played footbag since early in 2004, excepting about a month in the summer of 05 which ended with a severe ankle sprain. For health / pain / sanity reasons, I never got back to playing again after that. My health is better now, and the Chicago trip helped me remember all the cool shit about both the game and the community.
Anyway, your posting a lot of stuff that I hope to be working back into my game in the near future. I like your blog, I like your commentary about technical aspects of your game vs your bodytype. But I don't know you so I don't post in it. Meh?
That's a pretty snazzy basketball net.
Consider yourself encouraged.

Yeah man, I've told you this before, but I feel like your approach is a really good model for anyone who is trying to consciously build their game. I admire your ability to work hard and find satisfaction in the little things, even though hitting some flashy new trick is always a temptation.
We all get discouraged and we all wish parts of our game could be different from what they are. Remember that if you can't find some happiness and enjoyment with where you game is at, you'll never find happiness or enjoyment wherever your game goes. This last sentence brought to you by the Fortune Cookie Association of America.

Alright! That's what I'm talking about. Thanks everyone!

I needed that.
At Frank_Sinatra: Btw, you're a really good writer. Your blog always makes me chuckle. The fortune cookie comment did the same.
At Colin: Post in here as much as you want. Since you complimented my basketball hoop we are instant friends.
At Verena: Thanks for the kind words!

On a different topic, is Craigs List a national thing, or just in my area? In any case, it's freaking awesome. We've sold so much stuff that wasn't being used in our house (but was in totally good condition) so quickly. And the buyers have been so happy to get good deals. It's really a win win. What a nice system.
edit: damn it, I think I need to stop using the word "freaking". It's become an every sentence type of word for me. I freaking love using it, but I think it's probably pretty freaking lame. Freaking damn it.

1. I find your blog to be one of the most enjoyable reads in the entire footblog section.
2. I was gonna write that you are on the right track with atomic thinking, but I think I was on Vicodin around that time and was kinda out of it. I haven't been on here much lately.
3. Whenever I see the word "freaking" I think of Peter from Family Guy.
4. Craig's list is a national thing, and it's definitely very useful. Good place to find subletters or new apartments.
5. Cool image of you breaking the wood in the practice area.

Well, all the nice comments have done their work >> I'm pumped to play tonight in the barn. Thanks again, much appreciated. Please feel free to comment whenever you'd like, I like the company. Or, next time I hit that wall of frustration, I'll cry out for help again. ha ha

1) That's nice of you to say, thanks!
2) Cool, good feedback. I'm off atomic for a little while because stepping is on my brain, and I think giving concepts a rest when they're "close" sometimes is more helpful than increased reps.
3) Family guy is the funniest show ever.
5) Thanks for noticing, I liked that reference myself.

Good practice last night.
I haven't done whirl or DLO for awhile because I haven't had time in my practice, but to prove the point that "sometimes time off from tricks actually helps tricks" I found that I could hit both tricks on both sides very nicely.
I lost paradon on both sides somehow in the last 3 practices. I figured out why last night. Need to set more "under" myself. I had gotten a teense over-confident in the trick and was setting too far forward. Problem fixed. Hit paradon > pdx mirage > repeat so that I ended up hitting on both side 2 times, end with hand catch.
Jumping ahead, I watched vid of my barrage from a few days ago last night after practice. Totally 'the'. The motion is great, timing is great. Issue is that I bring the dex knee up very high which isn't necessary. Really need to keep that low to the ground. Will try again on Saturday.
Back to practice. Drills such as mirage > illusion > legover are rock solid now. Interestingly, I'm not happy with my pdx mirages. I don't like how they feel and they're not smooth enough when I watch them on vid. That's easily fixable, but it definitely needs attention.
Hit DATW out-in for first time ever on strong side last night. Not even close on weakside. It will come along though. After I figured it out on strong side, I was able to hit DATW out-in > couple kicks > repeat 5 times in a row to hand catch.
LOTS of stepping toe stalls. LOTS. LOTS. Boy, you can get a lot more reps in on a set by doing it this way. Really popping on strong side. Noticeable improvement on the pop on the weakside. After stepping toe stalls, I did some blurs and ripwalks. They're better too. But, I think I'll keep with the stepping toe stalls as the main focus for at least another couple weeks.
Pixie practice. Much smoother these days. More relaxed. I really catch a deep deliberate toe stall, and get a dex about half way up my calf so it's nice and clean. I watched them repeatedly on slo mo on vid, and I have to say that I love my pixie set. My posture is very good now too. Hitting both smears with ease, pixie buttrfly, pixie ss mirage, pixie ss buttrfly, pixie legover. And linking multiple pixie tricks in a controlled manner. Playing into and out of pixie comfortably. Since I'm staying off atomic for a few practices, I'm going to work to get to shuffle point on pixies. They take almost no energy, so this will be a nice run stretcher.
For the first time since years ago, I had a run where I consciously forced myself from "beginning to get out of control" back into control. And I willed myself into a longer run without having 10 bails in a row. That's the key. A long run is made up of several shorter runs >> being able to convince yourself to come back to 100% controlled motion **and** begin another run of tricks is where the string length comes from. It's really hard to describe how that moment feels, but I felt it yesterday and was quite happy about it.

I got my first call back for an interview. SunGard, a Fortune 500 company. Sr. Manager position in a process improvement/strategic marketing/analytics type of role. Perfect for me considering my background and education. I have the HR interview coming up shortly. Salary would be about equal to my current salary + bonus (not sure yet if I'd get a bonus on top of that number, but the point is to get into a big name brand company, I don't care as much about the money at this time). Keep your fingers crossed for me.
edit: And as of yesterday, I'm down another 3 pounds.

I'm not a doctor, so take this with a grain of salt. In my opinion, good advice to people that sprain ankles: the sooner you ice and advil, the better.
I hobbled into the house and started icing within about 1 minute of spraining my ankle (well, within 1 minute of me getting up off the floor after writhing around in agony and swearing a lot). Had advil in me within 2 minutes. Continued icing and advilling all night (even in bed until just before I fell asleep). Continued icing in my office this morning. Will re-ice after lunch.
Ankle hurts, but not like last time. I'll still have to stay away from footbag until at least this weekend, but maybe the issues won't linger as long this time (it took months for me to get normal ankle crank back.. I literally had a hard time with butterflies and clippers until last week).
And what sucks is that I was beginning what was going to be 2 weeks of tiltless and bops. Easy stuff. Easy stuff that I'm not as good at as I should be. I did a nice job starting slow back into the game, and all my practice on sets etc. has been useful. But I want to be even better at the easy stuff.
I had all sorts of links prepared (easy stuff like mirage > ss mirage > illusion > legover > clipper > repeat). And lots of different bops drills too.
I guess the good thing is that after an injury you have to start easier anyways, so I won't feel bored working on tiltless and bops.

SunGard phone interview with HR in a 1/2 hour. Nervous.
Ankle is surprisingly doing OK. Sore, but not like last time. I think I will play my easy drills on Thursday and see how it goes. I may have gotten really lucky with the ankle this time. Or the icing helped that much? Whatever, I'm happy I'm not sore like last time.

Yikes, very difficult interview. Some of the questions were so deep and specific to the role. But, nothing in my background indicates I've done that exact job, only that I have a lot of experience in tasks that would show that I could quickly adapt to the new job requirements. So, I answered with examples that would illustrate that I can do similar tasks. Weird way to do it - usually, if someone's background isn't the same exact job as what you're hiring, you ask more general versions of your questions (goal is to determine aptitude and potential rather than get examples of how they've done this exact job... since they haven't done this exact job. duhhh). But, HR lady really liked me and told me she would be recommending me to have a 2nd interview (this time with the hiring manager). Gonna break my no booze during the weekday rule tonight and have some 'calm down' wine. I'm wired to the highest level right now.

Hey Bob
It sounds like you did super in that first interview. Interviews freak me out and I find it really hard to talk properly 'cause I'm so nervous; but it sounds like you're very apt when the heat is on, and like if you're right for the job that they'll be able to see that quite clearly. Good luck
