that's awesome they let you bring your fixed gear into a skatepark. As long as it has wheels I suppose, eh? It's like me bringing my longboard into my skatepark. They're wondering what I could possibly do and then BAM I blow minds!

hey I'm assuming you're going to GRASS, right?

Here's the video I posted at the bottom of the last page, it's me at the skatepark on my track bike today. SO damn cold!!

Pat, it's not like there was anyone to not let me in, there was only 3 young teenagers there other than me. Also, bikes are allowed at this park, BMXers are commonly there and they think I am cool! hehe

I heard from the guy that is running this new DVD compilation of track bike tricks and he wants to put me in the next one! Cool! Maybe I am on my way to some sponsors and flow finally. 8)

Dupuy, yes, bootleg sessions. Also, I got a PM from the guy running it and he said that some of the dudes in BS saw my recent youtube video and sent a note out saying 'watch out dudes!', yessssss, I'm the best!

That actually super inspired me to go for it, I day dream constantly about the tricks I am going to invent.

I played footbag last night with Josh and it was fun. We played the whole session with a bag he bought off me that day and it was soooooo good. I used a higher tungsten ratio in the filler and the bag had a real supple hex colour (paisley print) and apparently this was a winning combo.

I used most of my turns to drill, I was stoked to get all sweaty. I was drilling stuff like parkwalk>stepping ss mirage rpt and dimwalk>blur rpt. Lots of ducking and stuff too, most of the drills were intended to get my twisted ankle clipper back up to form. I had taken over two weeks off footbag to let it heal and then at gymnastics on Monday I partially twisted it again! I wasn't even doing a move, just climbing down off a block I was sitting on. Lame!

Mondays gymnastics was real fun actually. I paired up with this springy black guy named Cyrus, he is at a pretty similar level as me on most my moves so it's fun for us to push eachother. I did about 15 standing back tucks! Bam! I want gainers soooo bad so I am working my tucks hard. Also, the coach guy had me drilling this 180 leg swing to gainer thingy that is apparently how you work up to full on gainers.

It's frustrating being so driven to get good at too many things. At least I only 'need' to be the best at one of them, that being track bike tricks. I am riiiight on the cusp of human progress in that field and I have the chance to take the lead with some drive. With tricking at footbag I am satisfied to just progress at whatever pace comes to me, that saves me a bit of self-imposed pressure.

I am killing time at work, I am supposed to be looking busy. I will have to do more of this so I will be back later.

Jorden is supposed to come with me to gymnastics tonight, we'll see if he bails or not.

Sigh, he bailed. Maybe next time I guess.

Work is really slow today, nothing to do.

At least I have a job and I'm earning money again.

I didn't have a job for 2.5 weeks and it was really boring. I like the new position I have, I do packing, which doesn't really involve packing anything into anything else. I just take stuff off a line and beeping them and putting them in a pile that someone else takes away. And the people I work with don't suck.

I am trying to get my german lessons to play on this computer so I can learn while I earn.

Back to work I guess.

Should I go trick or swim tonight? Money is real tight.

Swim because:
distance = less gas = less money
cost = less than $15 for tricking tonight

Last thursday I was thinking about cancelling our footbag club meeting until I got a last minute call from Jay Boychuck saying he would be in Oakville that night and wanted to shred. That was enough to sway my mood and so we had a session.

I don't think I hit anything of note, but I still had fun. Jay was looking good, his confidence is going up and it makes his style look nicer. I gave him a few tips where I could, I like that he listens and tries to apply what you say. Jay's a good kid.

I had a pretty mellow weekend, Friday was consumed with shovelling snow for hours after work and I spent saturday and sunday drilling bike tricks and studying german. Peng got me a new program (the Rosetta Stone) for learning german and I am totally into it! I am glad to be motivated on that front again. I got Bootleg Sessions (the first ever track bike trick video) and it's got me stoked like fuck. BIKE TRICKS!!!

Fucking snow, go away! All I want is pavement to drill on.

Tonight I am going mini-putting with pengpeng and then gymnastics afterwards. Should be a fun night.

I am gonna bring my camera and film the handful of tricks I can hit now.

Newbie tricking highlight reel coming up!

Well the night didn't go quite as planned. After I posted that Pengpeng PMed me and said that she'd rather go ice skating and so we agreed to meet at a rink Peng looked up online that was near the Gymnastics place. Peng has decided to stop going to the tricking sessions for a while to really focus on her strength training regimen that she is passionately pursuing. I really admire her dedication and enthusiasm for that stuff, she digs in and actually studies and learns all the everything about everything so that she can do it all perfectly and it really pays off for her.

Both of us were late for various reasons, she got lost, I had to drive to the store to buy food to feed the cats when I got home from work blah blah, but we met up there at about 7:10 in the parking lot. I love getting to see Pengpeng!! She's so fun to be with and smart and we smile and laugh the whole time. We laced up our skates, I helped Peng get hers really tight, and then hit the ice to loop counter clockwise with everyone.

I jumped over a few lines, Peng even did some with me holding hands, but then we got told not to by the 15 yearold safety marshal person with a reflective vest and full face helmet.

We got bored of that after 20 minutes or so and left and then drove to the gymnastics place. We had a bit more time to kill before the tricking session was to start so we went to the nearby superstore and looked at things. We often go to stores and look at all their things and don't often get much, we just like to imagine.

I went to my tricking session, got changed and started to warm up. My new friend Cyrus and I still hang out and talk a lot at the sessions. It's fun having a friend that is around my level, we are pushing each other a lot now. After doing some of my best handstands ever (I've been really working those muscles lately) and running around a bit Cyrus and I both hit standing back tucks on the hard floor before the big formal warmup which was really satisfying and reaffirming of our confidence with them. He only hit his first ones last Monday, but now he can leap into giant clean ones no problem. He also hit his first wall flips this week, a thing I had been encouraging him to go for since I knew that once he hit it he'd realize how easy they are.

I find it amazing how the guy running the sessions manages to give us new and often ridiculous exercises for the grueling warm-up. I can't even remember them usually, but it's stuff like.. one person in pushup position, the other person is also in pushup pos'n but one hand is on the other persons shoulder, head-to-head, both pushup at the same time, then the guy on top walks their hands over to having both hands on top, pushup together, walk the next step over to the other hand on the ground and one on the shoulder, pushup again. That would be one set, do five, GO!

And then that would be only one, there would be about 15 crazy different things and then a whole bunch of nasty stretching, all of this done in pairs. He makes you find a pair with someone you have never met, I find that really fun! This day I had an Asian chick named Adrienne, I think, I also think that Peng was paired with her last time. It was weird bending, folding and being so close to another girl so soon after having just been holding my little Pengpeng. It really reminded me how toit and ripped Peng is relative to most people. She said that she wants to have a body that other girls are jealous of, I think she is already there but maybe she wants to make like.. allll other girls jealous.

The most brutal stretch for me has you on your back, legs up and open, your partner comes in standing facing you and they put their legs in like pillars in the pit of your knee, aligning your thighs straight out from your hips. Then, for two minutes, your partner pushes straight down on your knees to open up your hips. FUUUUUUUUUUCKKKK!!! I am soooooo tight in this respect!! It KILLED from the second she even put her legs on position, let alone for the two minutes of increasing pressure. And Allen is shouting, 'another inch!!' with each ten seconds he counts off! Fuck! I don't have ANY spare inches! haha, it's SO intense, getting out of it is really painful too, you have to really ease out of it or it's really awful. I really feel that stretch for the first half of the session while my hips recover. I need to focus more on stretching, I think that footbag has left me really tight in several directions that aren't that important for footbag.

Footbag has a tendency of encouraging a particular body position, like any other sport, and that often results in sport-specific muscle shortening and lengthening. I need to really focus on leg and hip flexibility to open up the tricks I am doing. I see the really crazy guys and they can all like, bend in half. Oh yeah, on that hip thing when I was doing it for the girl she could go almost to the floor, I guess maybe that means she can do the splits.

I want to make it a goal to get to the splits, Peng keeps telling me to stretch every day and I never do it properly, fuck!, when will I finally accept that if I want to be flexible I need to suck it up and bend?!

I am gonna go stretch after I finish this post! yeah!

Sooooooo after the trampoline warmup (which alllways comes first) the stretching and exercises we did the tumbling warmup. I find this part fun, he builds up from really basic stuff to stuff I can't quiiiite do, at which point he says to just to whatever from before.

Finally he let us loose and said that today he'd be doing an aerial tutorial. Yay! Exactly the trick I wanted to learn!

I worked it and worked it and worked it, he builds us up slowly for all the tricks we do, starting with the foundations and then working up to the real deal.

Unfoooooortunately, I wound up re-twisting the same ankle that was still only 70% on an aerial attempt which sent me to the floor in a heap of pain. Sigh, I don't even react when this happens now, I just let it happen and lay there grimacing feeling the all too familiar searing pain in m right ankle.

So, the reason this post has been so long winded was because I have lots of time to type on my day off from work with a mashed up ankle. Fudge!

Peng also told me many times to wear an ankle brace or at least support it to some degree, but I forgot and wore nothing. She has the right to say "I told you so!" soooo often. :P

I hurt myself near the end of the session and after I stretched a bit and cooled off I put on my stuff to go. Cyrus was leaving at about the same time and I asked him if he needed a lift anywhere. We were headed opposite directions but I offered to take him over to his bus stop to save him having to trek over in the freezing rain. As we drove we saw way up ahead that the bus he wanted was driving along so I sped and caught up to it and passed it, dropping Cyrus at t he next stop in time for him to catch the bus. On the way he asked me if I have facebook, I do! I didn't have an easy way for me to pass on my info, I told him my last name and figured that'd maybe work. I searched for him and I think I found someone that looks like him, same steps in his hair. haha we'll see. I am excited to show him a video of me shredding since he has no idea about my footbag stuff.

I called in to the temp agency this morning to say that I couldn't make my shift today, mostly because I spend 7 or so of the 8.5 hours I am there standing and I really don't think that is the best thing for my ankle today. I am going to go (hobble) to the pharmacy to see what they have in the way of ankle restraints, following that I will probably sit in my room doing German lessons.

Ooh! On the topic of I already have waaay too much on my plate, I have decided to rekindle my fire for the guitar. My sister, a music teacher of a few hundred students, has enthusiastically agreed to take on the task of teaching me both to play and also about the theory, her specialty.

Anyways, lots to do! Ta ta! 8)

Matt, unfortunately you missed the short paragraph where I said that I mashed up my ankle again, I suck!

Dupuy, I consider Bootleg Sessions to be the first one dedicated to tricks over riding and being messenger ripoffs, you know? I really like the trick riding stuff because it is so separated from the whole stigma of fixed gear riders being messenger posers or something, I am just a retard trying to do tricks on a non-trick bike! haha

I went and bought a brace and it has reaaally helped, it stabilizes my ankle and doesn't let it flex to any point of pain. It also means that I don't have to use all the sore internal foot/ankle muscles to resist stepping on that foot since it's sorta bound in place. Peng insisted that I get the lace-up type, not some soft stretchy synthetic one, and I did and it feels great, like an ankle hug.

It was a rare warmish day yesterday and it was killing me that there was starting to be bare pavement that I cooould be riding on! I wanted to get out and get some cardio of some sort, I've been sitting around way too much. A bum ankle just adds to that of course.

I've been studying (obsessively) all the footage of track bike tricks and mentally working on the physics of the tricks I am trying to get, it's alot of fun math!

Anyways, with my ankle freshly braced my mobility went from 10% to 75% so I was willing to try out riding my bike to see if that direction of motions would be painful on my ankle. After rolling around on my street a bit and doing a few wheelies I was feeling pretty confident that I could handle some basic skatepark tricks... and if I was going to find any pavement to do tricks on it would be today or not for at least a week or two since I knew more snow was to come.

So, I checked that my bike was ready to rip, geez, there are toooo many parts that need replacing and fixing but I have zero spare cashola to spend on my bike for now. All my money is supposed to be going to paying off the last of my debts (which I've been doing great with, almost there) and then all my money shooould pile up a bit. A handful of grandies in the bank would help a heck of a lot when moving to a new country!

Anyways, back to the story, bike was fine enough, I took the front wheel off and piled my bike into the trunk of the 'winter car' my dad bought while his mustang is in storage for the winter which has now become my daily driver while they are away. It is a gold mercury sable and it only plays tapes and the radio and I really like it.

I drove to Shell Park, Oakville's first cement skatepark knowing that it was going to be wet at best and covered in a foot of snow and ice at worst, I got a mix of sorts, an average of 2 inches of water/slush covering everything with snow drifts going up most banked surfaces.

Sweet! Let's ride!!

It's a skatepark I know well as a skater, I first skated there probably..ten years ago! haha! That was when it had been freshly built after the hard lobbying of a committee that was started by a very dedicated and smart guy named Steve Carey. He actually lived down the street from me, he was not only a cool nice guy, he was also the student council president and valedictorian. Winning character! He was also nice to me in all our encounters, but I never really got to be friends with him since he was older than me by several years and um.. teenagers are scary! hahah

Oh! And it was his mom that was the first to advise me to look into whether I had ADD or not, it turns out I did and that was the first step towards my finally becoming a good student and ultimately winding up with a Mech Eng degree. Neat eh? It's funny how a trail can lead from a snowy skatepark do a bachelor of science degree in not to many leaps.

So I took the time to just drill and bogart all the ramps and shit I wanted to use since there was totally no one else stupid enough to try to ride in that crap! I also forgot to attach my fender so I guess I got sprayed by my wheel alot, though it was not as though I would notice it much after the 3rd or 4th time I was sent splashing to the ground flat on my face/back. haha My feet were dreeenched and frozen, perhaps that helped me numb some of the pain I should probably have been feeling in my ankle. Big props to the new brace though, it really opens doors!

I managed to hit several sweet new tricks like grinding a rail on my bottom bracket!! Oooohh! I hit it several times, and it felt sooo sweet! I can't wait to film it, I have plans for some of the rails at the other parks around me too! Also, I took the most bails on this move for sure actually, there was a ramp of snow at one end of the rail from some snowboarders and when grinding off that end I would get caught and tossed over my bike forwards and you know where that leads. Someone observant may suggest to go off the other end, that was what I was doing at first but I realized that the other end was slightly higher and that made my wheels clear the ground better when grinding so I wanted to do it off that end.

I was able to slash through most of the snow like it wasn't there, I just had to keep perpendicular to ALL transitions or I was fucked! Also, rolling around on the ground was pretty hazardous, there was a real tender angle I had to keep the bike to in many places or the front/rear wheel would give out from under me. Though surprisingly I took zero falls just from the conditions, it was all trick crash related bails.

At one point I noticed that there was some glass on the ground in some of the snow, great. This then led to many further discoveries of whole bottles smashed. I took the time to clean up basically all of them because I am rolling around on balloons and all that. I had a tiny shard in my finger and wiped my hands off on my pants and it cut me open and I bled a bunch.

I started to get frustrated eventually when the water getting into my bars from the crashes led to my grips coming loose which led to one or the other coming off entirely at a really crucial time leading to a totally unexpected bail.

I drilled some basic stuff like rolling up an incline, I was using a 1/4 pipe and a flat bank, and then rolling back down backwards and then doing this turn around thingy to revert back to normal. I was drilling the turn around part mostly, but also getting XP on the whole deal.

On top of managing the bottom bracket grinds on the rail I also finally hit a sweet grind on the box! I actually hit several, I want to get really good at them because I have a bigger longer box I have in mind to hit. I actually have several I want, we'll see how it goes! These are more of a pedal grind/bottom bracket grind with my wheel on the surface of the box, I think this is a pretty common grind for pegless riders.

I was also clearing several table tops, though the run-ins were alll super sketchy, I had to pump off transitions that were all covered in snow with a splosh of slush when I reached the bottom each time. There were lots of gaps that I think I can make in perfect conditions, these were not those so I will leave them for the filming days that I hope are coming up.

The topic of filming is particularly interesting this time because I am going to begin 'sitting' on all my footage with the intention of sending it all in to be featured in the next Bootleg Sessions video. I've been told the timeline for filming by the producer and so I am gonna giver, I see this as my crack at potentially getting some sponsors for this crap. If I can pull that off then maybe I'd finally be able to put together a bike capable of launching me into the hardcore shit I want to do! Raaahh!!

Here is the most hardcore stuff being done on a track bike these days:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Xnw2Rz8Z0W8

I am drilling hard to make up all the ground I can, it's a fun journey, I see it as another footbag, another guitar, another whatever, I am addicted to learning stuff!

Anyways, I didn't hurt myself too bad biking, maybe I stressed the ankle a little more than was smart but whatever and I bonked my knee a bit it seems as it feels sorta owy.

Yawn, I am sleepy, I wrote too much.

Night modified.

Hmm, I wasn't planning on going to gymnastics on Friday but maybe I can make an exception in this special case.

I am being ginger on my ankle but it's good enough to session on, I went to gymnastics on Monday and with my brace it was okay.

My highlights from that session were 4 backflips in a row on the toit trampoline and a 20 second freestanding handstand!

Even though it was the trick that injured me the week prior I spent most of my time drilling aerial, my tricking buddy Syrus hit a few, fuuuuck! He and I like pushing eachother, I have a few tricks on him and he's got a few on me. Man, can he ever jump though! At the end of the session we started doing these mega leaps and vaults over these giant foam blocks, Syrus could out-jump us all though, I bet he could clear two cars.

I only first mentioned footbag this monday, he seemed pretty interested and curious. He seemed to like one of my youtube videos, maybe some day he'll want to learn footbag.

Peng has motivated me to step up finally and start working out a little more formally. She burned me a copy of the program she's on and I am hesitantly dipping my toes into the pool of commitment.

The motto of the course is Decide, Commit, Succeed. Sounds pretty good eh?

I am at work... I should go home... too much on my mind.. too much to do.

Fuck, I havn't submitted like any of the forms I need for my germany shit, I suck so bad at this stuff.
Sigh.

Hmm, no worries. I don't mind waiting until you're closer to 100%. It'd be fun to have some shred seshes too. :)

Nice motto!
