To give credit where credit is due,

We took the rod-and-tennis-ball idea from Yacine Merzouk and Sebastien Duchesne. Yax and Seb put together a REALLY awesome freestyle explanation/demo with such a device, and I had the good fortune to witness their show twice, once at the Montreal Freestyle Challenge in May 2003, and again the next summer at Worlds 2004, where they did their show on stage before the Singles Freestyle Finals in the Rialto Theatre. That second show was really a class act, and my own pitiful attempts to duplicate it further increased my respect for the the two of them, both as performers/promoters/showmen, and, of course, as freestylers (really, it was Sebastien who did all the actual freestyle in those demos, and man, the nearly flawless show he did at Worlds 2004 would be a tough act to follow for almost any shredder). Seriously, those guys were really good at their little show, and it was obvious that they had done lots of practice, like, as in, they weren't just great freestylers and cool guys, but they were real pro performers when they took the stage that night. Even their prop was considerably nicer than our tennis-ball-on-a-stick. My only complaint was that, although I saw their show twice, I couldn't possibly try to really duplicate it, because they always gave the show in French. Still, I've got no-one to blame but myself for not understanding all their jokes. I should have paid more attention in my high-school French classes. C'est la vie. Anyway, I really wish that somebody would put THAT demo up on youtube, or dot org, or somewhere. Anybody out there have video of Yacine and Sebastien's freestyle demo?
