edit: SOOOOORRYYYYY for taking the first post of your new page!!

Frankly the at home gym stuff peng was suggesting covers alot more of the important areas than weights ever can. They develop stability, core strength and balance, weights just make certain muscles bigger.

I think you'd get waaaaay more out of yoga than ballet. I don't think viewing ballet as a sweet way to get some exercise while stretching is very accurate. You'd be surprised how intense (or totally not, depending what kind of yoga you do) yoga can be. It is SOOOO much more than just stretching! You gain a much fuller understanding of how your body works, your connection with it and how far you can take it. I'd be really happy if you humored me and tried a free trial class at a local studio. But do so with thought!! Don't just take a random class and then decide that is all yoga is! It can be so many different things, from slooow and long poses to much more aerobic and cardiovascular based.

My fave was yin yoga, the slow long poses kind. You spend around 5 minutes in certain poses focusing on breathing and breathing into the tight areas until they slowly loosen up and you sink deeper.

We have also done hot yoga, where the place is stupid hot and this somehow makes it awesomer. The poses weren't as long, but the experience was much more extreme and in the end you felt like you'd accomplished something major for yourself.

Either way, it's soooo not just stretching.

Hey Erik, just wanted to chime in to say that I'm also looking forward to what Colin wants to explain about the benefits of weight training. I think what helps is to ask Colin for the book "Starting Strength" if he has it, or look for the book yourself, and do some critical reading with it. Taking notes and such.

I'm actually in the process of looking for it myself so that I can read it on and off in the Spring. I think note taking and adapting from those notes into your perspective of cross training is only beneficial.

Well I think I am going to hold out and just do the stretches I know for now. And yeah, Colin is helping me get my hands on the book that got him into weight training, so I'm stoked about that. I just hope that it doesn't entirely require a gym and its equipment to do what he does. Well, we'll see how things go.

Stitching
My footbags suck now.
I can't remember which was the last bag that I made that I was completely happy with. I realized this when I got a bag back in the mail from Alex, of my FAT crew, just yesterday. I guess there was a period where I was cranking out incredible bags and then I accidentally made some minor changes. I'm not sure what to do, but I don't feel too compelled to make more bags. I MAY know what the problem is, but, blech. It's frustrating. This bag that I got back is so perfect, and next to my two recent bags... it just makes them look like they were the first bags I ever made. Lame.
I guess I mostly only want to stitch more to complete those trades I said I'd make, and kind of with which have taken forever. And maybe a handful for myself so that I never need another bag again. I also feel bad because some of the bags that I've sent out haven't been 100% awesome.

Shred session: 080119
So I just had my first shred session in like 3 months.
It was incredible. I feel so good. Like... in the way that you feel, doing something active, after not doing anything active for... 3 months. I definitely played tiltless. But it wasn't so bad. I also mostly just did runs of plantless far clippers and osii, and, like, so 2s, like, far legover, or whatever.
A few highlights:
-22ish zulu clippers (not super awesome, but it was the first guiltless thing I did all night I think). Maybe 32? Dunno.
-106(?) contacts of butterfly > pdx mirage [repeat], first try. (26.5 rotations?)
-70 contacts of the spinning clipper > ducking clipper drill (where you increase the spins each rotations... so, like, you know. Spin clip > duck cliper [repeat] > spin clip X2 > duck clip [repeat] > spin clip X3 > duck clip [repeat]. And I went up to the end of 7s, and was gonna catch, but just missed the catch. Ha.

Anyway... not sure if I finished my thoughts, but on the phone now, and feel like getting this out of the way. Oh, also a run with gyro ducking clipper BSOS, spinning ducking legover, dropped on spinning ducking mirage (this run made me concentrate more on holding back, and staying tiltless...)

I feel i need to correct you on that tom. you can achieve the stability, core strength and balance that body weight exercises provide and even more when using weights. You can work every muscle in your body using weights, not just certain muscles. And getting bigger muscles also depends on how you train. I'd say marathon runners don't exactly have bulking huge muscles, but i can assure you they do resistance training with the use of weights.

Erik, it was great to have you out and kicking last night. I'm really excited to have you back!!! While i enjoy kicking with manna, i feel alot more motivated when i kick with you. your creativity and energy seem to rub off on me, and i'm better able to perform. How are you feeling today? Any pain?? i was really happy to hear that you were playing pain free all night.
Sorry to hear you still aren't making bags the way you want to be making them. Maybe you have just raised your standards too high? I have not seen a bag from you that i thought looked bad. Plus, just because it doesn't look 100% perfect doesn't mean it won't perform.
I remember looking through starting strength, and it was almost entirely barbell and dumbell exercises, which would require you to either buy some free weights or get a gym membership. that said you can use some things around the house to provide resistance. A friend of mine uses buckets full of water and a thick broom handel to work out when he's at the lake and can't get to the gym. It just requires a bit of creativity. And like peng said, you can use body weight exercises with fantastic results. It just requires some tweaking (a barbell bench press now become a push-up, etc).

Thanks for the compliments, Andrew :)
As for the weights, I happen to have a bunch of "free weights"(?) and a bar and bench and stuff... Not sure what they're called and all of that, but I've got a lot of weights. So, yay!

Oh yeah, and no, I feel completely great today. Well, my neck is a bit sore, maybe from the zulus. I felt a tweak in my shin driving home, but nothing lasting or anything other than that. I also felt a tweak in my knee walking to work today, but again it was momentary and slight.

Right on!
I'm gonna go bike for like 30 minutes now :)

EDIT: This is kind of funny.
I just looked up an unknown number that I got a call from a few days back (I don't answer unknown numbers). From the phone number, I got a name, address, and... this option: "See What E D Dadak's Home is WorthClick Here" :D

Beowulf
I saw Beowulf last night.
I expected it to be terrible, but my brother said it was great, so I gave it a chance. It was actually SPECTACULAR! I think I tried to read the book some years ago, but it was quite slow, or something. Makes me want to watch the other movie, Beowulf and Grendel, though. I started watching that, like, a year or two ago, and it was also a little slow, but did show promise.

Ranting about work and life
So I was helping my uncle at his coffee shop over Christmas, to make some money. That was comfortable, though I abhor the company. I will still work Sundays for a while until he has someone trained well enough to open by themselves.

Now I left because I said I wanted to continue taking calls from the School Division, with whom I've been employed for a couple years as a substitute Educational Assistant and also a substitute Clerk. I make about twice as much money there, so that's neato. It's stressful, though, which is why I stopped working there in the first place (I'm on call, so I can work as much or as little as I want, which is helpful). So I was called today, but I was so nervous, and sleep-deprived, and stressed that I just ignored all 4 calls (from an automated system... although I did also miss a call from the head of the substitute roster).

It's hard for me to be motivated and get off my ass and do stuff. I had my appointment with my family physician about my depression on Monday. He seemed confident in his ability to help me, since I have a family history, and he's had results from treating family members. He also said that I seem to have a good head about myself with which I have been able to sufficiently cope over the years and kind of more or less maintain a level of stability. Afterwards it kind of seemed like the kind of thing someone says to you to make you feel better about yourself. I dunno.

But yeah, so he said there is medicine and there is seeing a psychiatrist. I said I'd rather avoid medicine if possible. I'm not really sure why. I guess there's that stereotype about people relying on it, and stuff, and I dunno. So I said I'd really prefer therapy. So he said to think about the medicine, but that he will make an appointment for me with a psychiatrist for in about a month. So that's exciting. I guess this person will determine whether I am able to "fix myself" by will, and by talking to someone, or whether I need medication. My doctor also said that it's now believed that depression is a physical ailment and that parts of the brain actually shrink, and so sometimes medicine is the only cure. Of course that's not 100%, but I guess the popular theory in the field right now.

So yeah. Bleh.
I just want to get this first day of work over with so that I don't worry about it as much and can just go and make some money already. It's most stressful because I am on call, so... I never know when (or if) I will be called. Sometimes it's at 6 in the morning, sometimes it's at 10 (and the other day I got an unknown call at 12:44, which could have been the computer...). So I'm called, and for instance, it could be 10 and the computer will ask if I will sub at a school for an EA who was supposed to start at 9... So already I'm late. Then I have to figure out where the heck in the city the school is, how to take the bus there, and transfer, and when they connect, and how long it will take. And every night I need to get to bed, assuming that I will be called at 6, and have a lunch ready, and all of my clothes and everything all ready to just go. So yeah. Stressful; not my bag. But I wanna try it out. And hopefully get a term soon, where I will work in one place for a longer period, like.. a week, or even a few months. That's the one thing I like about this job, is the terms. They're usually really laid back.

Some nicer stuff
I guess, on a more positive note, I've been working on this drawing for Marita that I'm digging. And reading. And my brother gave me Half Life 2, which I've been playing a bit of. I have so many hobbies I feel like I never have time for them all. It feels good to be drawing and not being frustrated by it. We'll see how that goes when I'm finished this drawing. It's going pretty slow, and I'm not really being too creative. Anyway I also just stationary biked for a while again and stretched and stuff, and that was nice. I think I'm going to try to bike 15 minutes a day at my ideal heart rate, or whatever. We have this rad bike that kind of keeps track of that stuff, and fluctuates the difficulty and everything. So I bike at about 26 km/h, with a heart rate of 150-160 (beats per minute? Dunno...). I have to wear my knee braces, 'cause it's a bit rough on my knees going that hard for so long.

I am sooooo excited for shred on Saturday. I simply cannot wait. I hope we get to play with Andrew though.

Here's that drawing I'm working on.

I have a friend who has a very similar style to that drawing, but with less line weight difference. You're really good, is that piece going to get markered up?

erik, your heart rate training zone is between 128-167 BPM. start at the lower end of the range and slowly increase the intensity over a few weeks. It's recommended to do 20 minutes of aerobic work per day. If going that long is a problem for your knees you can break it up into 2 10 minute sessions. when i do break training i like to push up to the higher end of my target HR zone, and i often go well above it when doing sprints. I screwed up the dates of the demos, so i'm playing this weekend. it's the next 2 weeks i'm not playing. i did however roll my ankle pretty bad on sunday night, but i didn't notice untill monday morning  it feels better now luckily: swelling is gone, pain is gone, but lacking full rom. i might take it easy on saturday... might.

Yeah, Zac, I was planning to marker it up.

Played hacky today.
I felt a teeny bit raw towards the middle and took some time to do some shin strengthening, and I think that helped. I definitely played harder than last week, although it was still tiltless shred.

Did quite a bit of osis stuff, and that seemed to click pretty well; that felt GOOD, 'cause I love osis, and find it sooo styley, but I've always had so much difficulty with them. So, I did some stuff, like, ducking osis > spinning osis [repeat] to open a run. I think gyro osis BSOS same run. Diving osis > merkon [repeat] I think. I hit 51 osis. I think my record is maybe 60-something? And my average is prolly just under 20. So that was cool. Umm. Also I did some stuff like ducking clipper > ducking osis [repeat] > ducking clipper > ducking osis x2 [repeat] and tried to keep going. Maybe got to 3 on one side. Nothing really awesome, but felt nice. Low-impact. Oh, I was pretty close to pdx blur both sides. Got the set off quite a few times both sides. My session highlight, though was a move that Andrew asked me to try, diving spinning clipper. I tried a bit, and then I hit it one side > handcatch > other side first time ever. That was neat.

Yeah. That's basically it.
Manna and I played some two square. I guess at one point we were both laughing a lot. And he made a rule that there should be no laughing. We laughed hysterically at that for about 5 minutes straight and then I served and he lost before the bag crossed the line by laughing. Then we tried to cancel the rule but couldn't stop laughing for another 5 minutes. It felt good after. I haven't laughed that much for a long time.

And some neat stuff:
-I made a 15-20 lb lasagna the other day. It's about 2' x 1' x .5'
-Winnipeg has the longest skating rink in the whole world, at 8.5 kilometres
-I can play Guitar Hero on hard now! And some songs on the level higher than that. Expert?

I'm still not working, so I've started stitching more, which is neat. So far they are coming out pretty good. Not awesome, but definitely passing my standards. I played hack casually for, like, 10 minutes. I kinda hit some neat stuff, though cleanliness was for sure questionable:
-double diving clipper [both sides] (I'm pretty sure, anyway -- flip would be a new move)
-diving ducking clipper [both sides] (about as clean as your average muted magellan looks)

Yeah. And diving spinning clippers both sides again.
Umm. I have a WICKED hilarious bail on diving spinning clipper captured on my digital camera. I'm gonna upload in a moment:...
Oh. Nevermind. My computer is being too dumb for that. I am lucky I managed to edit that Andrew video glitch-free in the end. You can check that out in the video section. And those bags I posted in that post your bag thread.

EDIT: Felt super creative today. Played some hack, and hit those new moves; made that video; finished stitching that hack; finished a painting; wrote some music!

The painting I actually really ruined and I don't like it, but it is the first painting I have attempted in yeeeeears, so it was kind of fun, and I wasn't going into it expecting anything spectacular. The sketch is also a little lame. I did it without pencil, so no going back on mistakes, but I didn't really notice the elongatedness of the one side of the face until after.

But my biggest accomplishment of the day was that I started to transcribe my very first song! I picked up my clarinet a few days ago after not playing in, like, 8 years, and it's fun. I've been playing some Nightwish songs, and that's actually what I've transcribed in the picture, but I've also started writing my own music, and I'm very excited to see where that goes, and maybe add some lyrics :D

It's just a really cool feeling to look around me and see sketches and paintings, and half-stitched footbags, and paint brushes and my clarinet and hacky filler and facile and stuff all together.

Played a bit of hack today.
My only real accomplishment was 141 ducking clippers. It's not my record, but it felt neat. It was first try too. I was just like, maybe I can beat Lon's record. I'll turn on my camera. I got it on my digital camera. But it's kind of like, why bother even watching it, 'cause it's so boring :D

My inner thighs felt really tight and sore after. For some reason saying inner thigh just sounds wrong knowing that a bunch of boys may be reading this. I get tight and sore the same way when I haven't really played for a while. It's kind of the same place where I first injured myself back in 04 on atomics and flip ps whirls. Except from not playing it's usually mostly in the other leg. I did find a kind of round-about way to do the butterfly stretch though (can't do it, 'cause it kills my knees), which stretches where it's tender, so that's cool.

I posted in Bob Riefer's blog saying that 100 BOPs is easier than 50 toe-tiltless for me, and then he replied and I realized I was maybe exaggerating. But I did, like, 50-some today at one point, inspired by his blog, and then that 140-some ducking clippers like so easy, so... I felt kind of justified or something! They both fatigued me evenly.

I feel really exhausted and worn out, but I haven't really done anything. It sucks. I can't wait to sleep as soon as I clear stuff off of my bed. Goodnight.

I think it's great how creative you are. I really like going into blogs like yours or Sam or Ashley's and seeing what footbaggers can do beyond kicking. At tournaments I sometimes wonder, what if the best musicians in the footbag scene put together a band? Or what if the best basketball footbaggers were on an intramural basketball team? I'd love to see either of those.

Totally.

I like the composition of the sketch over the music notes. And the painting is a bit creepy, but awesome. Always a pleasure to see your art.

Thanks guys :)

I played hack again today.
I kind of wasn't expecting to, even though I told Manna I probably would. I didn't know if I'd be able to do 2 days inna row, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend some time with a friend or do some drawing or relaxing or something.

So I played even harder today, and I'm a little raw, but okay. I did some shin strengthening halfway through again. I gotta keep remembering to do toe taps any time I'm sitting down.
Some stuff I did:
-some double pickups
-reverse whirling reverse swirl rolled off a bunch
-a run with both blurry rev whirls and both spinning rev whirls, first try

Nothing really too notable, although it felt good to know that I hadn't lost some of my moves. It was all still completely tiltless. Osis moves were still pretty on, which feels good. Yeah. Not really much else to say.

I'm gonna go bathe and try to get lots of sleep so I can ACTUALLY try to work tomorrow. I think I'm prolly gonna go visit Marita again the week after this coming for Valentines Day. We'll split a bus ticket (22 hours on the bus...). That should be something to look forward to. Maybe also help motivate me to work this week. Oh geez. I gotta figure out my doctor's appointment thing beforehand though. Maybe make sure it can be a ways in the future so I can stay for a while if I want.
