Proper Oral Hygiene

Now let's get to the point yo -- nobody fucking practices proper fucking oral hygiene...
Jesus fucking christ.
Brush for 2 fucking minutes, 2 times a day, floss once a day, brush your tongue for 30 fucking seconds, then fucking use some type of mouthwash, and drink fucking half your body weight in oz of water daily. fuck.
Love,
Me

Any chance we can tone down the language please?

Most dental insurances that I've come across cover 2 cleanings per year. Take full advantage of that to clean out the stuff flossing simply cannot reach. That also enables Dentists to spot problems while they are minor and easy to treat. You can help prevent more involved procedures like Fillings, Root Canals and Gum Surgeries by routine maintenance. Crowns, Bridges, Partial Dentures and Full Dentures can be a solution to missing teeth but simply don't always work as well as natural teeth. Implants offer a better solution if you can afford them.
Over the counter beaching systems (toothpaste, strips) don't work at all or won't work as well as something you get at a dental office. Those commercials will tell you just what you want to hear to buy their products. Most insurances will not cover bleaching treatments since they are generally treated as cosmetic procedures.
I have personally noticed that men, particularly big men, tend to show more fear of pain and needles. Women in general have more tolerance to pain.
Back to cleanings. Some offices just use that soft spinning attachment with some minty paste and call it a cleaning. You're in an out in half an hour, no pain. Other offices use Scalers and Cavitron tips to help thoroughly clean and scrape below the gumline. More involved, takes about an hour, maybe some discomfort, maybe more than that.
Our office recommends Listerine brand mouthwash (less alcohol) and a soft or extra soft toothbrush for home care. All toothpaste seems to work the same and we don't suggest any specific brand.

I had a friend who used Crest whitening strips and I had to tell her to stop using them after her teeth started looking too white. It didn't look like a natural white anymore. But until that point, after using them her teeth looked really nice and white.

I can't find it, but I read a study a few years ago that said that the researches found no difference in teeth quality between people who did floss and people who didn't, nor was there any way for people to tell the difference (just from looking at the teeth) - apart from obviously the relationship that people who do floss spend more time on teeth care in general, so probably brush more regularly, while people who don't floss are more likely to brush less as well. I never heard a comment from the floss industry, so I don't know how legitimate this study was, although it was published in a science magazine, but I don't floss and my teeth are always in perfect shape when I see the dentist (apart from one being broken in half, and another having a hairline fracture
) I tend to think much of the stuff relating to oral hygiene is just good marketing, and not neccessary at all. If you really care about your teeth a lot (and also the rest of your body), don't eat lots of sugar. The average westerner consumes 4 to 10 times the daily recommend intake.
I don't know about any studies, but my hygienist has been able to tell when I've flossed regularly vs. when I haven't.

Yeah, I dunno as far as teeth go, but flossing is definitely good for your gums.
Also, a lot of oral heigeine depends on genetic's. Me and my brother have both never had a cavity, despite being seldom brusher's for most of our lives. My littlest brother brushes neurotically and still gets a cavity now and again.

Since I smoke, I brush with arm and hammer toothpaste twice a day, and floss about 4-5 times a week because I'm a Nazi like that and like having my gums feel healthy and clean.
so you care a lot about your gums but you don't give a shit about what you're doing to your lungs?

re:flossing - my dentist can tell when I haven't been flossing. I actually asked him about it and he said that it's not so much for your tooth itself, although if you eat a lot of crap flossing may help slow tooth decay, but its more for your gums - to prevent gum disease and such.

I hypothesise that smaller people get owned by bigger things more often and are thus used to pain and less scared of it. Bigger people are less likely to get owned and are not used to pain and are as a result, more scared. lolZeke wrote: I have personally noticed that men, particularly big men, tend to show more fear of pain and needles.
