Asalato

Has anyone ever seen this before? It's an African instrument that has been on my mind ever since I became of fan of Hifana, a two man disc-jockey group from Japan. This is their favorite instrument to play while on the go, when they're outside of the club scene. I thought that if the price was right, I would get a pair for myself.

Btw, this could be a pretty good utensil to push me into being fully bsos (with my hands, that is). :) Plus, it could be a good rhythmic motivator for footbag, I would think.

Can they be bought at drum stores? Music shops? Anything I should look out for, for anyone that has a pair of their own?

I've usually heard these referred to as "Kashakas".
A friend of mine has a set of these and they are HARD AS HELL to get used to, but sooooooooooooooo super ubular once you get the hang of it. The pro-percutionnists that use these do some CRAAZZZZY tricks with them to get unique beats.

You can usually find these oddly enough in like a nature type-ish shop that sells wooden things and inscents and all those mega relaxing cds.
They usually carry really neat instruments like Tibetan Singing Bowls and Digery Doos and Shakers, etc. I would also check out music stores. Good luck  !

I've never seen on in a music store (and I happen to live near two of the biggest music stores in the world), but you can't go wrong by checking. Also, the internet probably has a few sets. And by probably, I mean definitely.

Oh man, you're telling me. I'm prepared with the knowledge that I'm going to suck with these. :P However, I spend most of my time on the go, and I don't want to use my hands just for stitching in my breaks. Plus, I really want to stray away from playing handbag (messing around with footbags on your hands), so this could be something worthwhile.

And maybe some elements of pen spinning could be used with this instrument or toy. I really want to play and experiment with beats and tricks at the same time, so playing around with the asalato/kashakas almost sounds perfect. Maybe I can jam with people in drum circles or guitar. 8)

edit: Didgeridoos are freakin' awesome!!! :P

Chad, I'm so very thankful for the links that you provided. Some I've seen before, but there were some links that you provided that simply wowed me.

The last one really wowed me, but I've seen it before. Still, it's very impressive. It's the fourth video that got me raring! :P

Doing tricks with the asalato/kashaka/banakula never really occurred to me, now that I think about it. I never really thought about tossing them during the session or tossing them across the other hand. I guess my thoughts previously about tricking like pen-spinning was out of bounds, since you want to keep one end secure on your palm while the other is used to swing and impact. I don't know, but these videos are now making me more excited than ever!

Thanks a lot Chad. When I'm good enough with these, we should totally jam. :D

I found a shop online that sells these:

http://www.pacifier.com/~drum/html/bells.html

Is the price for these good? $7 USD for a pair. There're no charges for shipping.

There are a few percussion music stores located around NYC. I'll see if they have any that are cheaper and right for my size. I have small hands, so maybe I have better dexterity with the right sized gourds? I can maybe rock better with larger gourds and such. Just some food for thought.

My two loves, asalato and Hifana!

The song that is playing in the background is Wamono, by Hifana.
