Who makes your favorite bags and why?

Post by mc »

This can be for performance or aesthetic reasons or both.

I've stitched enough to make mine perform and look just like I want them to, so for myself and other experienced stitchers, it should come as no surprise that our own bags would be at the top of our own lists.

as for people who are not me, my favorite for at least a year and a half has been Waylon. He made the Gay Cow footbag that I hit swirling spinning blender with (still the pinnacle of my single trick achievements) which was a large footbag that stayed round and had plenty of room inside for stalliness. I killed it good this summer with a flip bullwhip attempt. STOMP!

Then, some time later (right around one year ago to the day) I traded him a footbag of mine for a footbag of his. It's much different than the gay cow footbag, much smaller, but still stally, and really precise with sets. That was the bag with which I hit my first (and only) beast combo, food > spender > mullet.

So, I've had a lot of footbag play success with Waylon's bags, and I haven't even gone into his aesthetics. Last year at GRASS, we brought VERY similar prize bags. We both made 17 color spiral bags, half white. my 16 other colors were in random order, and it looked decent. Waylon's were in perfect color spectrum order with beautiful flow from one into the next, totally blowing mine away aesthetically. He always picks attractive colors and often does interesting patterns.

Go Waylon!

maybe I like his so much because we had the same teacher.

Matt, I have to say that I'm totally digging #99. Mint choco-chip! :P I've been breaking it in lately, and it feels so good, and yet plays very sharp. I really enjoy the colors; how there is a spinner pattern and the green and brown just works so nicely together! (Green Grape and Cedar Berry). I had such a nice and comfortable session with her yesterday afternoon.

I don't think our teacher(s) deserve enough props as is. They were the ones that brought us into stitching, and taught us the conventions of sewing hot footbags. Thank you Pengpeng Du and Tom Mosher! :)

As for the one person that makes my favorite bags, I'm pushed in a corner between Peng bags and MC bags. One is stally and gushy, while the other is sharp and technical. Now that I'm focusing more on how I play, sharp and technical is what I generally use these days (MC bag #99).

Still, if she still sews footbags to this day, my all time favorite bag from a stitcher would be Lonn Vo. :P

I'm a fan of Claven's Bags. They have just the right amount of stall-ability to roundness ratio.

My friend has a Shephard bag and it is VERY nice. Will most likely get one for myself.

Clavens, I don't think I've ever played with a bad one. The amaretta ones are soooo soft. The minis are soooooo good. The regulars are soooooooo floppy.

Yum.

I've been playing hack for 16 years, and I like Abshire footbags because Richie would sell me bags when other people making bags wouldn't. Maybe today it seems ridiculous, but bags weren't always easy to come by outside of tournaments. Richie made a commitment to grow footbag, and turned stitching bags into a career. He would sell a hackysacker at the beach the same bag he would sell any top pro, for the same price. Having access to pro equipment helped me get better more than anything else, and Richie was there at my beginning.

I'm digging this thread. My top stitchers are as FOLLOWS:

Aiden - All the ones I"ve ever played with have been perfect for me. Smallish, heavy, and a nice balance between rolly and squishy. Always good color selection too!

Matt Cross - Though evolving all the time in style and content, they are almost always very consistently shreddable, especially always within the first week of playing. Also I really like how Matt always seems to have a bond with his bags. Whenever he talks about them he seems a little attached to each one. That's awesome.

Waylon - Precision to the max! Really soft too. I really haven't played with too many of his but I plan to.

Clavens - I've seen three in person and have shed a tear at each one that I didn't own it myself. Prior to my first siting I didn't even know Dave stitched so it was a huge surprise that he could toss such professional bags into circulation.

. . . ugh. I need more bags. :)

i absolutely love abshires stuff.... my amaretta 55s are amazingly even, round, and soft but heavy like a rock all at once. and after yogans facile 55 broke in, its now just as good. also, a amaretta mini clavens is probably my second favorite bag. aaron shepard makes some niiice bags, i got 3 off him at sjff, and unfortunately got the best one stolen, but it was my best bag for awhile there. i kinda like my bags too

I second Cale's notion. Abshire makes some of my favorite bags. But an incredibly sad thing happened today. I tucked my facile 55 into my shorts, then unwittingly forgot to put it back in my backpack before playing some Ultimate Frisbee. So know it lies in a field somewhere, amongst the grass and foliage. Rest in peace Fearless 55, You were on your way to becoming choice, but sadly another choice was made for you by powers unknown. Farewell, you will be sorely missed.

On another note, I'm now breaking in one of Cale's bags, which are actually really good! Plan on getting more from him soon.

This is one of those heartwarming "testimonials" that make you want to make a difference. Sort of like a pep-talk. Go Richie.

My favorites are Mosher and Brinard bags. I don't own a Clavens or MC bag... but I've played them and I'm sure they'll be on the favorites list when I own one.

And on the topic of stitchers and bags, I have a Tina bag... and I think she's got some potential. Just a couple tweeks... but I guess I should give slack to a world champ.

Holly, I've been digging the way your bags are coming along since Worlds, but at the time I didn't find a particular color combo that I liked (nor did I actually have the income). I don't know, I guess the "anchor" logo just seems so very attractive!

We have to do a trade some time! :P

My favorite bags besides my own are in this order:

Waylon, Hainia and David Clavens.

Waylon makes super gushy and round bags, sets really well and has teh perfect amount of fill. Beautiful bags too.

Hainia has perfectly stitched bags. I have a mini and a regular and there are no mistakes, no misplaced stitches are are probably the roundest bags I have ever seen, besides some of my own. A little too much filler, but not a problem, I just took some out.

David Clavens mini is near perfect in shape colour and stitching. It was by far the best bag I ever got right off the bat. Unbelievable playability.

Honorable mentions are VetteHunter, Julien Cote, Erik Chan and Richard Abshire. Great bags, great playablilty.

One thing that I never did do was break in my Toby bags. They are just like museum pieces that I can't manage to get dirty. But they are perfectly filled and stitched. And look better than almost any bag I have ever seen.

Whatever happened to Travis Iden (vettehunter)? I was suppose to, and wanted to, do a trade with him back then, but now he doesn't surf modified anymore. I haven't seen any recent submissions of his bags in some time.
