He was the co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons, the "Father of Roleplaying". Even though I haven't played D&D in years, I still have fond memories of it. A sad day for nerds around the world.

Wow, it's pretty incredible, I used to play so much when I was younger.

Oh yeah, I also read "Rolling in his grave".

I took a second to think of the second-hand contribution his work had. Most people who haven't played d&d must've been affected some way or another by him, and almost always in a good way.

Wow, I wasn't planning on a eulogy, I was only trying to say "Thanks for Oblivion, even though you didn't have anything directly to do with it"..

Yeah, without him there would be no WOW, no Everquest. Computer RPGs, MMORPGs, MUDs, these are all advancements to an idea he brought to fruition.

Honestly I think I prefer the pencil and paper RPGs to the computer ones. They leave more to the imagination (except for MUDs and other text/ASCII based ones). I can just remember being 11 years old (15 years ago) and being completely fascinated thinking about my AD&D character and the world he lived in. Back then being a "gamer" meant you played pencil and paper RPGs, not computer games. Now the younger generation have taken things to a new level, for better or for worse.

End nerdy waxing historic rant.

EDIT: OK one more thing. It's interesting Roy you commented here. My friend who introduced me to D&D when we were 10 was born on a kibbutz in Israel.

I'm not surprised at all, Ben. I already accept the fact that you're sort of my American alter-ego :P

I used to play allot of pen&paper AD&D too, mostly as a GM(or DM, as we used to call it). I think I still have the original first and second edition rule books somewhere, if they haven't given to rot & decay by now.

I can't say with full honesty, though, that I prefer pen&paper. Back then being a gamer meant you rolled abnormal dice in your friend's basement, but it also meant that you were doing it instead of going out on dates. At least nowadays being a gamer isn't so abnormal. Mass appeal has its benefits.
