Adrienne's footblog
I have decided to make one of these because I am hoping that posting my progress and such will encourage me to practice more. I am not much of a blogger so hopefully I will keep up with it...
For now I will start with an intro:
My name is Adrienne (Age). I am 21 years old and in my senior year at the University of Maryland, studying Spanish and education
I have been playing footbag for 3 years. My neighbor and footbag guru, Vince Bradley, tried to convince me to start playing all through high school and even though I had been to tournaments to see him play before, it was going to worlds '04 that did it for me.
I now play both net and freestyle, but am more into freestyle. I have competed in both in the past and have been to the majority of the tournaments on the east coast since I started playing; in addition to worlds in Montreal, Helsinki, and Orlando. Last semester I played with the Madrid players while I was studying abroad, and they help me so much in my development. While I was there they had Spainjam 4 where I met and played with freestylers from Switzerland, Austria, Germany, France, and of course Spain.
I have improved but am not at the level I want to be at. So I have been pushing myself alot more, especially in the last month. This semester has been the first semester that me and my little crew at univ. of MD have been playing consistently, which has definitely helped a lot. The two other main players are Ryan Davies and Matt Evans, who both also play freestyle and net. I recently discovered a couple other people at UMD who like footbag, so hopefully we can get them to come to our sessions.
I have also stitched a little bit but mostly for myself. The bags I have made turned out pretty well, and are definitely good enough for me to play with. I don't think I will ever sell them or anything, too much work. Thus far they have made really good presents.
So to finish up, here is what I have been hitting consistently:
DLO
reverse whirl
ATW (insides and toes)
legover (from toe and clipper)
mirages (from toe and clipper)- i tend to hit them quantum style from my toe
osis
butterfly
illusion
chest stalls (a personal favorite)
butt stalls
so yeah, mostly just the basic stuff
what i have hit but not consistently:
paradox mirage (but i am getting pretty good at it)
pixie legover
infinity
spins
and i have come sickeningly close to hitting reverse whirl
So we will see how this goes! feel free to post any thoughts you have, anytime

I am so excited that you are going to be in D.C. next semester, Ken. We definitely have to play together!
I did not get to play much this past weekend becuase I was in Tennessee for Thanksgiving and it was pretty hectic. Although I did play a tiny bit while I was black Friday shopping.
One of my cousins that came, Jake, is just about as redneck as they come. He is only 8 but he loves hunting and talking about his new shinky guns, has a heavy accent, and wear hunting camouflage anytime. He thinks footbag is for hippies but loves playing with me. I taught him how to do his first stalls. Well, when I pulled out my bag while we were waiting in the monstrous Toys-R-Us line, my other cousin Zack (who is a 14 year old snob) puts his nose up at me and says "Ugh, you and that stupid hacky sack". Well, Jake didn't like that too much and gets in his face and says "It's called a footbag!!!" and then starts to play with me. It made me so proud

I have been able to play about 30 minutes a day since I came home on Saturday night. I have been working on strengthening my right leg with clipper stalls and legovers from a clipper, because it is alot weaker than my left.
I almost hit a new trick today. I think it has a name but I don't know what it is. It is a pixie to a clipper stall on the same foot. Does that make sense? I almost hit it on both sides, which is really cool because that doesn't usually happen with tricks.
But I did hit back to back osis (osi?). That was a first for me, because my right osis isn't great, but it is definitely getting better.
The super big news for the day is that I finally hit reverse whirl on my right side. I had been practicing it since the NYFA jam in early November.
It feels so good to hit new tricks. I remember when I first started playing I would always think I would never be able to hit certian things like ATW. I would be in my dorm room holding on to my bed post because I couldn'y balance myself and try and try to hit it. In the process, I would usually hit my roomate in the head with a projectile bag (luckly she was understanding about it
). When I finally hit it, it felt so good. And it it was the same way with every trick, thinking I will never hit it and then being so happy when I did. It is definitely that thought, that I can hit anything even if it seems impossible for awhile, that keeps me going.

I have been slacking off from footbag the past few days because of school and fraternity stuff (initiations, informal, etc.). Oh, and just to clarify, I am in a fraternity because it is a co-ed community service frat. Being a chick in a fraternity often confuses people. It is definitely crunch time in school, but I am surprisingly chill. I guess I am feeling a bit of senioritis...
Last Thursday I did get in a really good session with the College Park Crew. It was the first time we all played together for like a month. Hopefully we will get back into our Thursday routine. All three of us made a goal for something we have to hit by the end of the year. Matt chose blur, Ryan chose torque, and I chose drifter. So hopefully we can all meet our goal!
I was hitting my pixie legovers much more smoothly, and I hit butterfly>paradox mirage which felt pretty damn good. I also did a duck. Just a duck from a clipper to a toe, but it was my first time.
I am continuing to work on my weak side, which is coming along pretty well.
That's it for now!

The goal to shred at least 30 minutes a day has completely gone out of the window now that it is getting down to the wire in school. I have 21 pages of papers to write (18 of which are in Spanish) by Tuesday, and then final exams.
Ryan and I played on Thursday but only for about 45 minutes because he had to be somewhere. I worked on drifter a bit and got it to hit my foot, but I couldn't finish it. Only 23 days left to hit it. Other than that nothing terribly productive happened that day.
But on a happier note...

...we had our first day of snow a couple days ago!! I have not seen snow in over a year and a half because it did not snow before I left for Spain last semester and it doesn't really snow in Madrid. It wasn't much, but it was enough to put me in a good mood

this blog is going as well as i thought it would, but it was worth a shot! i have definitely had some blog worthy experiences in the past couple of weeks.
i was slacking a lot during winter break but then i took a road trip through pennsylvania where i met up with some other players which definitely gave me more motivation.
it started in erie where i met up with danny greer, hacky sack jack, dan "the man" johnson and cory carr. it was alot more hanging out than playing, but it was a really fun few days. one of the days i was there we went to warren high school where we taught the gym classes footbag. it was such an amazing experience. the "bad kids" class (the kids who git expelled from other schools) turned out to actually be the most interested as well as the most gracious. they all seemed to have a really good time and were very polite to us. that really gave me hope that when i become a teacher, there will be a way to reach my students, even the ones that many people have given up on. we also got to teach mentally and physically handicapped students. that was really cool learning how to make adjustments for them. the teachers at the school want us to come back in the spring. i am going to do a real lesson plan and teach the class, and they said the would give me recommendations, which is sweet.
from there i went to brookville to visit my best friend, danielle and her family. i hung out there for a couple days then from there i went through state college on my way to villanova and played with dave clavens, scott bevier, and dave's friend who's name unfortunately i cannot remember at the moment. dave showed me some more of his sweet card magic, which always keeps me completely enthralled. we played for a couple of hours. it was really awesome to play with all three of them because they are such great players and people. i hit butterfly to reverse whirl that day which was my big accomplishment and dave gave me some really helpful advise on my clippers and paradox mirages.
i visited two more friends, one in villanova and the other in new jersey and that was the end of my trip.
so on a random note, on thursday i tried boxing. some friends bought boxing gloves and protective head gear so we all decided to go try it out. it is a real adrenaline rush to give some one a really good whack. it is not something i would do very often but it is really good exercise.
ken somolinos is now in d.c. for the semester and i am super excited about that because he is so much fun to hang out with. we met on friday to play. he has a pretty nice indoor spot in his dorm. he hit things i had never seen before but looked really cool. i hit double leg over thanks to ken. he really helped me out with that one. the best part about hitting it was that it felt so smooth. i have it pixie legover, but it fells so jerky and always looks terrible. chris miller met up with us after we had been kicking for a little while. we all played for a bit more and then went to my favorite sushi place for dinner.
last night ken came to pete irish's going away party where we spent the evening defacing a book about celine dion. it was a good time.

the last two weeks have been good but hectic. school started on the 28th, my last semester! then i graduate and it is off to grad school to get my master's in education.
i can tell it is going to be a great semester. my classes are really low key. intro to german, the lowest math class, a latin american literature class (in spanish) and ballet.
i am most excited about ballet. ballet is so beautiful and graceful. its amazing to pretend i can move that beautifully while i am in ballet class. as a bonus, the leotard is hella cute.
i am also the president of my fraternity this semester which has been fun and stressful at the same time. in some ways it is the easiest position because i just have to make sure everyone else does their job but that can be difficult.
my big news for the moment is i finally have a date for the footbag tournament i am having at the university of maryland. march 22. it is a charity event for the children's organ transplant association. its two of my favorite activities in one: community service and footbag! my fraternity is sponsoring it and it is pretty much because of my affiliation with them that i am able to pull this off. i have wanted to do this ever since i started in the frat, so this is my baby. i'll post up info in the "journeys to tourneys" section soon.

I think I finally have the resolve to become the player I want to be. I have been feeling really motivated to improve my footbag lately. Four big reasons have com into play: 1) Ken is here and is being a really great coach, whether he realizes it or not, 2) I want to improve for the tournaments in the upcoming season. Three years has been long enough that I should be competing at a higher level. 3) I have more time to actually focus on footbag 4) I tried on a dress today for the senior formal at UMD and I saw tummy through the dress. I need more exercise!
Today I went to the gym to play as well as to do some weight training exercises. Since it is the first time I have done weight training in awhile, I took it pretty easy. While I was footbagging at the gym, I mostly worked on my flip side clipper which I got up to 10 in a row. Unfortunately while I was there, my bag broke
So when i got home I filled a bag I had made awhile ago with a better filler than it had in it and continued to play for about 30 minutes. I worked on more fundamental things like keeping the bag closer to my body and making my dexes smaller. I want to try and learn hopover, pendulum, and frigid osis. We'll see how that goes
Yesterday Ken came to College Park for the first time. We went to the gym and played a little bit of basketball and footbag but the gym closed earlier than I thought it did. He completely embarrassed me in basketball, but I think he wanted to write about that himself.... We went to the UMD vs. NC State basketball game afterward which was a lot of fun. I am a college basketball person while he is an NBA person so eventually we are going to go to a Wizards game in D.C.

I read the title and thought, "Who's Age?"
I can be confused very easily in a literal sense, since I don't catch the connotations of words too often (just the structure).
Good to read that you have a blog, Adrienne. Let's go guiltless together! THIS IS THE YEAR!!!!!!

Yes Waylon, we will go guitless together this year! I am pumped.
I played for about 40 minutes today. My goal is to play about 30 minutes or more a day when I am playing alone, and then as long as we can when I am playing with other people.
The new regimen for when I am playing alone is to work on tricks, new or just ones that i need to work on, then try putting them in combos with other tricks. Then for the last 10 minutes I just shred as hard as I can and try and concentrate on putting as many of the tricks I know in the string.
Today I hit hopover, which seemed so much harder when I tried it yesterday. It is a fun trick to hit. I also hit my first full-fledged infinity which is awesome considering how terrible my right clipper stall is. But that clipper is definitely improving. I can already tell from practicing it a lot for a few days. I am doing it "hanger style" which is what Kolo used to call the way I would do my left clipper. Hanger style is where my fist is up against my head so my arms makes a triangle like the side of a hanger. But now my left clippers are really controlled and I don't do that with my arm, so I take the fact I am doing the hanger on my right as a good sign. That I will progress to make my left better.
I have been working on doing butterfly to reverse whirl or butterfly to paradox mirage. I hit them both today (not for the first time) but I cant tell I am getting closer to making them more consistent.

I have continued to play almost everyday, for which I am very proud of myself. I can tell that I am improving even if it doesn't show every run. Many things are just starting to feel more comfortable and more natural.
Ken came to UMD today and we played for about an hour in the bowling alley on campus. I hit hopover to reverse whirl which was a really fun combo. Then we went to Noodles for lunch because Ken saw the website and was so amazed he had to go there. Oh, and Ken, the website is AMAZING (www.noodles.com for those of you who might want to check it out). We also did bowling which was awesome. I did pretty well at first, but then started to suck terribly. But that is usually how it goes.
I have been insanely low energy lately. It has been really hard to go about doing things like normal and I think it has a lot to do with the fact I have been pretty bummed out for awhile. I was looking around on here today and I saw this "what makes you happy" thread which is such a great thread. It never hurts to be positive. I think it would be nice for me to do right now. So here it goes:
~footbag
~footbag videos that are also works of art (like the "rooftop" video of Honza and Ales or Sam King's video for the Modified Xmas calendar)
~cuddling/hugs
~wearing flowing dresses
~riding in my car on a nice spring day with the windows rolled down and playing my favorite music
~community service
~my mama's cooking
~sweet iced tea
~making home-cooked meals with my friends
~having a really good conversation in Spanish
~making crowns out of flowers
~pictures of pin-up girls from the 40s and 50s
~road trips
~pealing the latex paint off buckets
~activities with my fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega
~the random guy I passed on the street who gave me a rose on Valentine's Day
~dancing
~playing my banjo
~bowling

~looking at my thousands of pictures (my memories)
Alright that's a quality list for now. I feel a bit more cheery

Footbagging hasn't been happening much the past couple of days. Vince, Matt E., and I hacked with the astronomy grad student hack crew on campus and I ended up hurting my back. Is it strange that hacking hurts me more than shreding does? Vince thinks it is because before I started playing freestyle, was never a hacker so I didn't learn how to move my body correctly to get to the bag, so I end up straining myself. I guess it's possible. During that session I did accomplish a long time goal: learning how to do a pendulum. That was huge for me because I love that move but was never able to do it the entire time I have been playing. I don't know what happened, but it's great! But in addition to hurting my back, I have also been pretty sick with a cold. Stupid winter...
I have been doing a lot of different kinds of physical activity which has been really great. The mix has included: ballet, weight training, footbag (of course), an ab and low back class, and a power yoga class. It has been really fun to exercise in a variety of ways and I think the ballet and yoga is helping with my balance.
Ken has gotten into mashups lately and he sent me one that he thought I would like. He was definitely right so I want to share it with ya'll:

Today was a turning point in my life. A time when every young lady becomes a woman, a responsible adult. I learned how to change a tire. Last night my tire blew while I was driving and I was so lost because I had no idea how to change a tire. Luckily, I was not in progress to Anytown, North America like could happen on any given weekend. I was actually kind of excited my tire blew because I knew then my dad would be forced to teach me how to change it. I want to learn how to do different kinds of car maintenance myself, like oil changes and stuff but my dad thinks it's pointless to teach me when you can just pay someone to do it and save time (I think it is just because I am a girl). Anyway I was pretty excited to learn how to do it. Now if I blew a tire in the middle of nowhere on my across the country road trip this summer, I will be able to handle myself.
Anyway, I shreded for 2 hours. I didn't hit anything new, but my strings seem to be getting longer, which is pretty sweet. I also chose the music for my next routine. I had chosen "Misery Business" by Paramore but after today I decided "Xo" by Fall Out Boy. I got a month to make my routine, so I think I should be decently solid.
I am getting ready to go out to a local college bar with some friends. It is my favorite bar in College Park because it plays awesome music and has a great dance floor, both of which are a must for me. In the past week I have been doing something social everyday which has really taken my mind off of some boy issues I have been having. Most importantly, I have been having a lot of fun hanging out with old and new friends, which is exactly what I want to do in my last semester of college!

hey you, I am mucho proud of you for playing so much. Finding the motivation to "tip the scales" against the inertia and laziness is the hardest part of shredding. Just getting out there with a friend and starting the session. Once I reach that level, I LOVE kicking.
I also spend some 'off time' with my memories (digital photgraphs). I have them as my screen saver so whenever I am idle for a minute or two, I get a dose of memories. Many of them are either from this last years Funtastik or Worlds. I was lucky. I was going to not play Net for the first tournament of my life that offered net. But then Sebastian Ducshene needed a partner, and I was like , "hmmmm.... to play on a team with a freestyle LEGEND.. for this I will play. SO i have some phat pictures of some net matches with Sebastian.
that is what got me thinking about you. You are in some of my pictures of Funtastik, looking so jolly and cool yada yada.
So anyway. I finished my private pilot license. YAY! It took me WAY too long, but, THANK GD, it is over. so now I am allowed to fly passengers around. I dont wanna brag or nothing, just sharing some pride with you. so um..... be happy. WHen you are happy, you bring other people to happiness. you should be mucho proud.
be well ADrienne,
Smile. Smile. and may you smile in the future.

Thanks for the reply Benny! It is awesome to hear what's goin' on with you. And I will be sure to keep smiling. How could I not with such wonderful life and people as yourself in the world?
Tonight is my fraternity's induction ceremony and I have been running around like a crazy person all day trying to get ready for it. I really need a nap but I am afraid I won't wake up so I just thought I would zen out for a few minutes by writing in my blog.
I haven't been doing anything terribly special in the footbag realm but I went out with a friend in D.C. last night so I met up with Ken beforehand to play (not like that isn't always special
). He gave me lots of good suggestions on things to improve on. Ken is so great at giving footbag advise. He did what is now one of my favorite combos, which was something I don't know what it is>knee kick>pendulum>eclipse. It was so sweet looking, but I will refer you to his blog for further details...
I am starting to work on a clipper set illusion which I think looks pretty nifty.
I realized yesterday that my tournament is only 3 weeks away! I can barely believe it. I feel like there is so much to do before then! It is definitely going to be advertised to the campus community in hopes that people will come out and learn about footbag. I already know of about 40 spectators that will be coming, and I am confident that I can get the hackers on campus to come as well. Plus, I am sure the fact it is being advertised in our newspaper and message boards on campus will get the word out well. A member of my fraternity is writing up a press report for the campus newspaper so hopefully they will come out. Also, I need to get donation letters out to businesses so I can try to get free water and food for players. Unfortunately I have to talk to the campus police and they might have to be there since money will be collected. Bah, I am getting stressed out thinking about it but I know it is going to be a really great time, while helping out a good cause.

Although it was not the most footbag oriented weekend and had to work way more than I had intended, it actually was really fun
I ended up getting called into work for 3 shifts because the supervisor couldn't work at the last minute. Ordinarily, the shift probably could have been ok without a supervisor but we had an event going on all weekend, so it was pretty important there was one there. On the bright side, that event happened to be the Congress of Jugglers so I just juggled and played footbag during my shifts
My cascade improved, relatively. I met a cute juggler who was interested in footbag so I suggested we teach each other and he thought we could start practicing for juggling world domination. So hopefully that means we see each other again.
I did Habitat for Humanity for the first time on Saturday. For those who don't know, Habitat builds houses for people with low incomes. UMD has their own group. I mostly did concrete smashing with a sledgehammer until I hurt my elbow (I have a lot of problems with my left elbow). I was just the concrete shoveler after that. But I did get to use a jack hammer, which is quite possibly one of the coolest things ever. You would think it would knock someone my size over, but it is actually pretty easy to use. It's just hella hard to pick up.
