I feel weird giving you tips on footbag. You're so good.
All I did was watch Vasek and David to get my form. Furious should feel like a whirling quantum. Set the bag a little lower than stepping to begin, then you can up the height when you get comfortable with the motion. I focus mainly on clearing the first dex, then I just continue as fast as possible into the next dex.
I like to warm up with quantums and then my furious is usually pretty good. It's totally different feeling and motion than barrage. So you can't think of it that way.
Hope this helps a little.

No, I don't play soccer. Yes, there are competitions. 4 years. Lots of practice.

Bob: don't sweat the new page thing, I really don't care. I'd prefer people post in here and not feel like something prevents them from doing so. If there was something I really wanted people to see, like vids, I might just quote it. But yeah, always feel welcome to post.
Speaking of dreams, last night I dreamt I was at worlds and somebody told me that I took 3rd place in routines. I really didn't expect it, and was so overcome with emotion that I literally started crying with joy. It was really intense. When I woke up I was almost let down. I think a good goal for me before I retire from comp is to do at least one dropless routine in competition. I've hit one in practice, and I've done good one drops in comp before, but dropless would be something I'd really cherish.
Ben: Thanks for the tips and the compliment. I probably won't skool furious until my legs are back to 100%, and maybe not even then, but knowledge is always good to have. Also wanted to thank you for posting that Demetri Martin video in Dave's blog. I ended up watching the whole thing and really enjoying it. I like palindromes, anagrams, and Mitch Hedburg, so Martin struck a note with me.
Played tonight with Chris. We were both sick (physical cold, not shredwise) so it wasn't our best session, but I had a lot of fun playing.
Highlights:
*rev. swirl-symp torque, with a DSC in the sealing combo.
*bl. whirl- symp torque
*revup-DSO. I watched a Ianek vid earlier today, so straight from there.
*void and spinning dlo both first try
My final run of the day was my best:
*bedwetter-symp torque, and in the sealing run I hit double spinning osis, and blurry whirl bsos.
Probably no footbag til monday night due to school work. Speaking of which...

Been battling a bad head cold for the last week, and school's been rough, so I haven't had much opportunity to play footbag lately. Adrienne was in DC last night though, and my head was feeling better, so that was good enough motivation to get in a session. God it felt so good to play again. Footbag really is such a key part of my life, going a few days without it makes the whole world seem a little grayer and less enjoyable.
The goal was not to play too hard, and to get in some routine practice. Age's tourney is just over 3 weeks away, and I'd like to put on a good show. I'm gonna compete no matter what, but give how little I've been able to play lately, I hope I can get back into decent shape in time and put on a good show.
My routine run-through was tough, but I'm just glad I did it. Important first step. I should practice it at least once per session until the tourney. Not gonna post vids of my practice, but I am filming them so I can study my progress and tweak it so it gets better.
Shred was fun. I hit 2 genuine runs, which weren't super good or anything, but given that I hadn't played in 5 days and I'm still a little sick, I was happy with them. Dedicated them to Anz. I also hit one particularly stylish sick 3 in honor of Ianek. The last real good part of the session for me was seeing how much better my spins have become. I hit flip scorpion's tail 3 times, and GDLO bsos isn't nearly as huge a milestone for me as it used to be. I didn't film the whole session, because I didn't want it to throw the rhythm of the session off for Adrienne. She filmed a couple of my runs, which was cool, cause it's not always the same angle, and I don't have to worry about shredding off screen either. I kinda liked the balance of not filming a whole session, but getting a few strings shot.
OK, highlights:
*Ianek-inspired sick 3
*14 genuine contacts
*Run with scorp, GDLO, pixie DOD, and smog
*17 genuine
Hopefully get in another session this weekend with Chris and Age. Really glad I have friends down here to play with.

yo ken, the guy I shred with (Brian) is coming to that event in MD he said. Will you please do me a favor and make contact with him while he's there? Actually, if you could convince him to learn the names of some basic tricks that'd be a big help too. ha ha, partially joking about that second request. He's not shy or anything, I just think it would be cool for Brian and I to have a common point of reference (though Pete B. from Boston will be that soon too because I'll play with him at end of March)
Bob R.
Dave: When I moved to DC, I packed very little, and about half of that was professional clothes (I work 3 days a week). I only have a handful of t-shirts, and it's still too cool for NBA jerseys (even in my building), so I sometimes play footbag in polo shirts, which I brought for work for when it becomes spring. I also find they are a bit thicker than my t-shirts, so they keep me a bit warmer.
Anz: I'll try and film some more genuine strings next session, if I feel up to it. Erik pointed out that "genuine" used to mean no BOPs OR repeated tricks, but for now I'm just going to stick to "BOP-free." Genuine is a bit of a funny concept, because personally I think a flip osis-zoom, or flip osis-cool pdx trick in my runs looks more interesting than say, strong blur-smear-dimwalk. I'll try to keep stuff like that (and ducking clippers) to a minimum.
So the good news is that my head cold finally seems to be clearing up. The bad news, is that I had my first beer in a week last night, and it gave me incredibly painful aches in my quads. I had trouble sleeping because of the pain, and even today I still felt ot. I took some tylenol, 2 hot baths, and ate some bananas, so hopefully I'll be able to play tomorrow. This has never happened to me before, and I only had one beer last night, so I figure this must mean that my body hasn't fully recovered yet, and I should lay off alcohol until I do.
Age's tourney is in exactly 3 weeks. I'm pretty excited for it, mostly just to see old friends. I have root canal surgery 2 days before the tourney, but hopefully I'll still be able to play.
This morning I had the thought that it might be fun to do a ten part series in my blog, describing my career top ten moments in footbag. Looking back on my blog, some of the posts I enjoy re-reading the most are reflective like that, and I feel I haven't written that kind of entry in a while. I also figure it'll be fun to relive some of my best moments in the sport. So look out for some of those entries in the near future.

Got in a shred with Chris today. Adrienne sadly had to bail, but hopefully we can get a 3 man session on Wednesday night. I was just happy to play today; my quad pain from a couple days ago is completely gone. My stamina was pretty low all session, but I mostly just had fun playing. Chris hit a couple new toe to toe 5s, and even though it seemed like a subpar session for him, it struck me that it was still way better than when we first started playing. I'm glad to see him getting back into the game so seriously.
The only real highlight of the session for me was doing a run-through of my routine... and hitting it dropless!
My choreography still needs a bit more work, but today's routine was legit. If I did that in competition, I would be overjoyed. I really want to go dropless in comp at least once before I retire. I need to do a lot more work in practice to give myself a real chance at it, but today helped my confidence. It's a shame I didn't film it, but that should just give me motivation to go dropless again in practice, and hopefully eventually in comp too.
In related good news, I got my routine song on MP3 today, so I should be able to study/memorize it a lot more easily now that it's on my iPod.

Been studiously listening to my routine song several times a day, visualizing the routine in my head. I think it's already paying off too; I practiced routines tonight and I never got "lost" in the middle of it. Just listening to the music I knew what part of the routine I was in, and what to do.
Tonight the plan was to dedicate an entire solo session exclusively to routine practice, and I did. Not the most fun thing in the world, but if I'm ever going to go dropless in competition, I need to put in the time and really work hard at it. I plan on doing one good run-through of the routine at least once per session, and to have 3 more "routine only" sessions before Age's tourney.
Highlights from tonight:
*dropless routine.
*excellent one drop
*gained a much better understanding of what works and doesn't work in my routine.
*filmed several routines and studied them later.
Hopefully get in a normal session tomorrow night with Chris and Age. Mostly looking forward to just playing, but also hope to do at least one good run-through of the routine as well.
Non-footbag news: the trade deadline in my fantasy league is Thursday; cross your fingers that I can pull off one more good trade before then.

Man, I totally forgot about that challenge. Next time.
Chris unfortunately had to bail on tonight's session, but we still ended up with a 3 man session, because Vince Bradley came!
Very cool! It meant a lot to me to play with Vince in DC, because he threw one of the first footbag jams I attended. It was the East Must Jam in 1999, where I got to play with Pete Irish and I met Sunil. Feels like a decade ago... probably because it pretty much was.
Anyway, it was really good to play with Vince again, and to see him getting back into the game.
I had fun shredding for the first hour or so, and when everybody was getting tired and ready to go, I did a few routines. My first routine was the best, because I was still warm from shred. I did a one drop where I hit pretty much all my cues and felt very comfortable. I tried a few more times and hit a bunch of 2 drops, which weren't that bad. I really think the problem there was I had cooled down already and was tired. Whatever the cause, I didn't mind too much. Like I told Age and Vince, I'd rather do 10 three drop routines, or even 20 four drop routines before Age's tourney, than do 2 one drops. The idea being that the more practice I get, the better, even if not all my practices are great. Sort of how it's better to be able to hit 20 tiltless than 2 tripless.
Shred planned for Friday. Maybe I'll get in more routine practice tomorrow, or maybe I'll take a day off to let my body rest up. Even if I don't play, I think I'll watch some of my routines.

Man, this was a loooong week. Work was tough, lots of schoolwork, and just generally I felt like I couldn’t catch my breath. Finally Friday arrived and I was rewarded with a shred with Chris and Adrienne. I took yesterday off from footbag, so my legs felt spry. The idea was to have a normal shred and finish off with some routine practice, and I did. Shred felt very good, but routines were off tonight. One of my main problems with routine practice is I don’t have 2 bags which resemble each other, so if I drop my main bag during the juggle section, it really messes me up. I had a few real tough run-throughs where my mental game wasn’t in place, but I got my ish together towards the end and did a very solid 1-drop to finish the session.
Didn’t approach shred with any goals, which is usually a recipe for a good session. I only filmed one run, but I think in the future I will try and shoot more. I think I should just wait til I feel I’m in “the zoneâ€

*Sigh* The weekend's over, and daylight savings didn't help. Not nearly as academically productive as I needed to be either. I did get in 2 good solo shred though, so that's something.
Yesterday was a routine-only practice. The original plan was to play for fun for 20 minutes, then skool routines, but my regular shred sucked so bad, I just did routines.
Routines went great though. I hit 2 more dropless routines, and a couple very good 1 drops. Overall my confidence in my routine has gone up a lot. I'm beginning to understand how people did so well at Worlds this year. Hell, if I wasn't working and going to grad school, I think I'd have a shot at finals at Worlds.
Today's shred was meant to be 90% fun, and only a few run throughs of my routine. For the most part I stuck to that. Actually, it was probably like 75-25. I hit one more dropless routine, a great 1 drop, and a good 2 drop. I think I did a couple more run throughs, but those were the best.
Shredwise, I decided to try for blurriest swirl, since I was so close a couple sessions ago. Happily, I was close again today, so last time wasn't a fluke. I ended up hitting one and missing the seal. I hit it so well though, that I said aloud: "it counts, it counts. But I'm a big sealing fan, so I knew I'd have to hit it again. Happily enough, I hit it twice more during the session. My camera isn't great at capturing fast motion, but I think I hit it clean. The step may be a little slurry, but it's definitely not "the" or anything. I was stoked to hit a new quad dex though... I feel like I hadn't hit a new one in quite some time.
Highlights:
*Vortex-superfly again.
*Legbeater swirl-pdx torque. It's hard to hear, but I say "gotta catch 'em all!" in the seal, as well as "this is for you Chan." Responding to comments on the last video I made of legbeater swirl.
*Spinning PDLO to a run.
*PSW with 2 bags.
and the highlight of the day:
*Blurriest swirl-PDLO
Pretty sure that's my first time playing out of a quad dex with anything other than BOP. I think I could probably play out of it with pdx torque...maybe I'll try that next time.
After the session I had a disturbing thought. I'm having a root canal 2 days before Age's tournament. I really hope I'll be able to compete... it'd be kind of sad to have put in this much practice and not get a fair shot at the routine. Still, I've hit this routine dropless a total of 5 times, and got it on film 4 times. Considering I'd only hit one dropless routine ever before this, I'd still feel like I accomplished something even if I can't compete this time around. Also, now I have a well-choreographed routine prepared. So if in the future I compete again, I can dust this off and do better than if I hadn't been practicing lately.

Ken, the starbury shoes are $15 and they're called "Cribs."
They're pretty much Laver clones, and they don't have traction like the G-unit.
edit: Isn't there a way for you to reschedule your root canal after Age's tournament? Just a thought.
Plus, I don't want to see you looking & feeling whacked out on pain relievers and novacaine (sp?). However, it would be quite amusing.

Wow, ken props on getting the blurriest swirl, I checked out the vid. Sorry I couldn't be there to see it, but I really needed the rest I guess because my back and stomach feel a lot better today.
If you're worried about the root canal, why not reschedule it until shortly after the tournament? It's far enough out that the doctor may have an open slot. It's worth trying at least. Good luck on your paper this week, and I'll see ya Friday!
Edit: Just read Waylon's post. Great stitchers think alike!

That is one beautiful bag. Thank you very much Waylon!
Also thank you to everybody who sent me advice about the root canal. I called the dentist, and they assured me that the recovery would not interfere at all with any physical activity. They also told me that I'd have to wait until late april if I were to reschedule, so even if the RC did reduce my playing ability, I'd still do it next week because some things are more important than a footbag tournament, and this is one of them. I'm hoping it won't be too bad, and that I'll be in good shape for my routine.
No footbag yesterday, and I was planning on skipping tonight too, but I was feeling kind of down, and was so exhausted from work that I figured I should play, if only to cheer myself up. I didn't call Chris because I didn't know how long I'd play for, and I felt like some time alone would be good for me.
I started the session with the idea that I'd just shred, then get in one or 2 routines at the end. As it turned out, my shred sucked real bad from the start, so I switched over to routines... and I sucked in them too.
I think my mental state just wasn't good due to stress and exhaustion. Whatever the case, my mental game was probably the worst it's been in quite a few months. Routines annoyed me because I kept screwing up the juggling section, because I don't own 2 bags which are of similar size and weight. I have a tight Erik Chan bag, a floppy Luis Lipchak bag, and a Mirken which is big and not broken in. It was rough.
I managed to get my mental game together enough that I hit a couple decent routines, and that centered me enough that the session turned for the better. All told I hit 3 dropless routines tonight, which is a record for a single session. I've now hit this particular routine dropless 8 times, which comes as a nice surprise to me. When I decided to start practicing in earnest, I don't know if I envisioned getting to this level of consistency. I really hope it pays off in competition.
Hit a few highlights, but never really felt like I got in "the zone."
*Blurriest swirlagain. Second try.
*19 genuine
*Dimwalk swirl and parkwalk swirl first try.
At the end of the session I stretched down and checked modified, and saw I had a PM from Kevin Crowley. He challenged me to flurry-toebius, which I've hit before and don't find too hard, so I got back up and hit it for him.
