Canadians that want to travel to the US...

Post by Skippy! »

Admins, move this to KC if you feel it doesn't work here, but it kinda applies to us Canadian cats who haven't gotten our passports yet and want to go to those American jams this summer. I hopped on to the Service Canada website and this is what they had to say for those of us who would like to travel to the states by land:
As of January 31, 2008, Canadian citizens travelling by land to the United States must present one of the following:

a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s licence, PLUS a birth certificate or citizenship card; or
a valid passport; or
a NEXUS or a Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card; or
an enhanced driver’s licence; or
a Certificate of Indian Status (CIS) card; or
for those aged 18 and under only proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate, is required.
Full implementation of the document requirements for travel by land and water to the United States under the WHTI will take effect no earlier than June 1, 2009. The United States has yet to release the final rule on full implementation, which will specify the secure travel documents that will be accepted at U.S. land and water ports of entry.
So, from what I can tell, this means that we can still get over the border with our Drivers Licenses and birth certificates. Make sure to bring both, of course.

I dunno about the rest of ya, but I definitely thought that they had put the rule of needing to get passports in effect by now...apparently not though, we're good till next summer. Hopefully this brightens someone elses day, as I'm pretty damn stoked that I don't have to go wait in line for a stupid passport eventually.

Keep in mind that this is only by land, I'm pretty sure you need a passport for air travel. Also, if you were born outside of Canada, your birth certificate will probably not help and you need proof of citizenship.

I'd imagine you're correct on both accounts, Erik.

That said, who really wants to get on a plane to the states anyway.

:P
