Why is one mutually exclusive from the other? Can't there be both? You look at the rules, AND use your best judgment to make a decision on if the user is violating them. Seems pretty simple to me.
This is exactly how it should work - and it still seems to me that the rules we have are fine and its a matter of mod judgment that is the issue here. Your seperation of sexually explicit material and pornography is just that - your seperation. It doesn't require another rule, it would simply requre that mods consider it to be pornographic to have "blow-job" in a topic name. Pornographic material is not by definition limited to visual and auditory material any more than discussion and written material. The current rule covers topics and content of posts already. You clearly just want us to be stricter with it.

What about the schoolyard analogy - plenty of frank sexually explicit discussion goes on in the schoolyard - if kids were expelled everytime they were heard talking about sex or blow-jobs by a teacher there'd only be nerds in classrooms around the world.

I agree that there should be no in depth and gratuitous discription of explicit sexual acts on these forums - I hardly think that the words blow-job and sex constitute that sort of discription. I don't see why sex cannot be discussed fairly openly in the appropriate section of the boards by those users who are willing and able to do so. People who find that sort of discussion innappropriate or who are not allowed to participate in that discussion for whatever reason should not do so and should stear clear of the discussion section.

*I should be clear - that's my opinion as a users not as a mod - as a mod I'll reserve judgment till we've discussed it more*

Also I'd like to add that I think this type of discussion has been fascilitated by the existence of the rules - before they were written up - this sort of discussion would be completely sprawling, unfocused and unproductive. Sure it still gets a little that way at times - but it has certainly been an improvement.

Here's my idea that chris liked. not that it hasn't come up before.

"here's a thought. restrict offensive, sexual, drug related topics to discussion, and make it only accessible to users who click a box that confirms that they are the appropriate age (17+? 18+?), and also that they understand that controversial and sometimes offensive topics are discussed therein.

That way, I don't have to censor what I think too much, I just have to contain it in a safe place. Also, modified and footbaggers are no longer misrepresented by a softening of our real opinions and actions. If kids gain access to that material, it's because they've lied. That way, the onus for reading the material is on them."

chris also suggested that the mods be more aggressive about moving the wrong kinds of topics to this forum, and punish repeat offenders who deliberately misplace their topics.

he also had what I think is a pretty good idea:

The discussion forum should be fitted with a warning directly to parents, explicitly stating that controversial and offensive topics are continued therein, and that they represent the opinion of the person who made the post exclusively, and not the modified community or staff, or the footbag community.

as I said to chris, I feel that if these things were done, we would meet the reasonable wants and needs of everyone involved.

AS I SAID BEFORE!

I feel that a key part of this is SLIGHTLY more aggressive moderating and punishing.

I agree with Tsiangkun.
I agree with Matt.

I actually don't even know what topic this is referring to. I still feel like slightly in the category of other people trying to censor us younguns. I find it hard to believe that someone of my age level (mid 20's - give or take 10 years on this forum but still) is so into trying to censor stuff. At the same time I appreciate what they deem as responsible or good for the sport (though I may not agree or care about certain aspects of that).

I've always had access to any material my whole life. We watched Faces of Death (real life stuff) and porn when we were 10 or 12 yeards old. I know people are different. Just stating my opinion that I'm highly against censorship.

Separately, I feel like modified was created as an offshoot to discuss more private things. aren't we supposed to be the cool kids that do what we want and .org is the place for little kids (regardless of what google points to)?

I'm sure there's be a point where spam ads and a lot of stupid or immature posts would bother me. So far whatever modding goes on is working for me.

I think that this talk about new rules is pointless.

You've got a person on this forum who is deliberately trying to make it worse, and (at least as far as I know) there are no repercussions for them. And of course there have been other posters who have done basically the same thing and (again, as far as I know) not faced any repercussions.

If admitted, deliberate conduct to make the forum a less enjoyable place for others doesn't result in any kind of punishment, why should anyone expect that violating a rule about sexually explicit topics will result in any kind of punishment?

We should probably have a thread that lists all the explicit sex acts, and what they are, so that everyone is clear and knows what we are talking about. It seems unreasonable for people to not post the unpostable things if there isn't a post of the unpostable things for them to use as a reference.

dyalander wrote:I think it has also been a mod problem not a rule - we should have moved the blow-job or sex thread into discussion sooner.

That discussion should not occur anywhere other than discussion or footblogs. And those who do not want to have to see or participate in those threads can simply steer clear of discussion.

I think that makes more sense than trying to change the rule again - after all we only just had this discussion when we brought it in a few months back. I don't see what has changed since then.
You mean to say, "oral or sex." No one said anything about "blow-jobs." I actually consider such names to be derogatory.

Not to mention that "blow-job" implies men only, which the topic wasn't.

Btw, I voted yes.

There have been threads that discuss guns (specifically laws pertaining to them), so why can't there be threads that discuss sex? The latter is far more happy, safe and suitable for all ages.

Yes.

I think a good analogy is wikipedia. Everything is listed there, but in a respectful and adult way. I thought of this when my friend asked me to look up donkey punch.

Chris - that definition says exactly what I was trying to get across - "pornography" as it features in the current rule covers exactly what you want it to already. I think we've just been misunderstanding each other or something?

You said:
"Pornagraphic Material" is different from "Sexually Explicit Topic"
I say, as does the definition you posted that "pornographic" encompases sexually explicit. THis is why I don't think we need a new rule - its just a matter of fine tuning the current rule's application.

I think that perhaps, in general terms we agree but have just misunderstood each other - and you also would like to see slightly greater moderation than I would.

I agree with much of Matt's post - we should have moved the oral or sex post into discussion faster. I'm not sure we need to be "more agressive" given that we always intended to move the topic, and have been pretty good with moving stuff into discussion as required.

I think a more specific warning for the discussion thread is an excelent idea. Ian and I are at Australian champs next week but I'll get it going as soon as we get back.

I'm not sure about locking part of modified and making it age restricted. I think the warning would suffice.

i now that if my mom saw some of the threads in discussion, she wouldnt let me post or browse on modified.... but i just choose to stay away form them. keep in mind, if someone visits modified, the "oral sex" thread isnt linked to in big bold letters on the home page. a visiitor on the website (no matter what age) would have to actuveky decide to click on and read that thread... if they reallyy dont want to see it, dont go there. i think its ridiculous to say that we should be wary of young kids here... they have to decide to view the innappropriate stuff. that is not our fault. its weird, ii voted for the rule at the beginning, but after reading it, i changed my mind. im not saying i agree with the things some people post... im just saying that i dont think regulation is in order. if people want to discuss disgusting topics, let them; freedom of speech. if you dont like those sorts of things (like myself), dont go there. and dont worry about hwo might go there... we didnt direct them towards discussion, and then into innapropriate threads.

Didn't you agree that the discussion forum is not a place for putting things that breach the rules in other forums? It sounds very much like it's just the place you throw anything that might break the rules. The discussion forum was set up because a number of users were annoyed that there was too much "serious" discussion occurring in the kicking circle - especially about politics, and as I recall, the Iraq war. The Discussion forum was meant to be a place where mature users could get away from the rubbish that gets posted in the kicking circle, and immature users didn't have to put up with 2000 word posts. Instead we now have two forums full of rubbish topics that contain no serious discussion, but just crassness and immaturity. If the discussion forum is going to be full of that kind of rubbish, can we please reinstate the secret forum so that those of us who don't want to have to look at topics called "Sex or Oral..." can avoid it. Or would you prefer that those people just stop posting on modified, like I note many of the more mature posters have already.

I did and do agree that a breach of the rules is a breach of the rules and has no place in any of the forums - but I also think that that those topics that are closer to the edge of acceptability are more often that not better suited to discussion - nowhere do I say that the sole reason this is the case is because they are less accpeptable. This is an opinion based on my experience. Its not that hard a position to understand. Some threads are OK to move to discussion even though they would not be acceptable elsewhere on the forums because they contain content that shouldn't go elsewhere - political, ethical, sexual - within limits. That is not to say that in discussion anything goes nor is it to say that we simply use discussion as a dumping ground for innapropriate topics.

What I would prefer is if the mature posters on the forums acted as such, as many do, and accept that not everyone has the same standards of acceptability that they do and accept the fact that they have to share the forums with people with a variety of people with different values and interests - within stated limits. I also think that "full of rubbish" is an overstatement and that, to echo a cliche, one man's trash is another's treasure.

Some pretty strong factual words in there... Especially seeing as you're expressing an opinion.

You're throwing around a lot of words, intending to represent a large majority of topics, but really, they only represent a select few topics.

Why don't you name some immature and crass topics. I'd love to see what you "seriously" think is immature and "crass" (Still can't believe you used that word seriously. It's like you're trying to be snooty.). And yes, I do realize that the "Women..." topic falls in that catagory.

I really can't say I agree with anything you're saying. You're just so damn opinionated.

I was one of the major people responsible for the creation of the discussion forum and I wrote the rules for it. I am certainly aware of what I intended when I wrote those rules, and also what Rob intended when he created the forum.

To see what I'm talking about here are the last 10 posts in the "Oral... or sex" topic.

Please post if you think this is serious or meaningful discussion;

(also note that this is the topic that generated the various discussions on this issue, so it's the best example to use - it's the topic I don't think belongs in the discussion forum, and since it breaks the rules for all the other forums, should be locked or deleted).

Oral... Or sex
I went to the botanical gardens with my friend today and we juggled and it was really fun.

We also walked around and did an inspection of all the places that would be good to have a root (omg its like my dream to root someone in the tan).

This post doesn't directly pertain to the topic at hand, but I wanted to say it and I knew it didn't deserve its own thread (or does it? "Best places to root outside" sounds like a good one!).
Geez, one then the other, why pick?

Can't we just ban Fred? Matt, make it happen

Just that I didn't see it, so I didn't know your name. No implied hate.
Just that I didn't see it, so I didn't know your name. No implied hate.
My bad.
It's cool, bro.

Now you can talk about trash and treasure as much as you like. I put it that those last 10 posts are not serious "discussion" and they're not on the topic being discussed, and one of the rules of the discussion topic is that the posts remain loosely on topic and that people explain their reasoning for any opinions or statements. I put it that there is almost no real discussion on the topic in that topic. In fact of 38 posts in the topic, there are 10 that actually express any kind of opinion on the topic and 28 that discuss whether it's an appropriate topic to discuss at all, or are about completely different issues altogether. I think it's important to read those 10 posts as well, to determine what level of "serious discussion" is taking place on the topic and how many of those people are actually following the rules and backing up their opinions with the reasons behind them - ie. discussing the issue, not just putting out one line statements.
Pretty simple question. Do you like oral more than sex, or sex more than oral? (Receiving ofc.)
Oral all the way :D
hahah, nick, I am a huge enthusiast and proponent of both options. I wish my enthusiasm was less in theory and more in practice. ;)
Sex ftw.
yea, Super Smash Bros Brawl is great.
i think for some reason i like oral more in my mind than i do in practice, because i thinki love getting oral, but im disappointed everytime i do. yeah, i definitely believe thats partly related to the abilities of those few who have actually made the mistake of so gratifying me, but i think almost nothing sexual is as good in reality as you imagine it being in your head, even after you first experience it.
Oral is less... well... "messy." If you catch my drift. But I definitely like sex better. But I do love playing with a girl's hair... :)
if im super horny i want to staright pound someone, a girl...

but if im lazy as shit that day

only if i got to blow the fattiest load in her eye tho , only if. 8)

Omg its so true.
If this were a men's topic, it would have been called, "Head or Sex."
You can't give females head?

Firstly I'd hardly call that post 'destructive'. Secondly, if you made this thread you're just asking for these sorts of responses and you'd be stupid to think you'd get otherwise. In fact I don't actually see what was wrong with this post in the context of this thread. He stated his preferences and just threw in a funny joke at the end.
Geez, one then the other, why pick?

So there are maybe 5 posts that are on the topic and are actually following the forum rules, and 33 that don't follow the forum rules. That's 13% pass, 87% fail. You could argue that the posts about whether the topic is an appropriate one to discuss or not are on topic and don't break the rules, but given that it's a discussion about whether the topic should be locked or not, I don't think they count in it's favour at all.

So mods, are you happy with a topic where only 13% of posts clearly follow the forum rules, or have the rules changed, and if so, are you going to update the discussion forum rules; perhaps to read; post about any topic at all, the only rule for this forum is that there are no rules? Perhaps you could change the name from "discussion" as well, as that's getting pretty misleading.

I just always find it really funny that the mods on this forum always side with protecting the offensive. Where as other forums have rules against posts by minors talking about ejaculating in females' eyes, this forum welcomes it and by no means curbs it.

It's good to know how much tact and class footbaggers possess. Hey afterall, that's what she said right?

Those things that offend you, might not offend everyone else. I'd rather the moderators stay invisible, and protect everyone's freedom. The community can exert pressure on offensive members in its own way. Be the change you want to see, post more european !

It's not about staying on topic or not. Anybody who has been involved in a real discussion with other functioning human beings will know that the subject of discussion doesn't stay the same - it often goes off on tangents - so I don't mind if topics go off topic.
This is from the discussion section rules.

Your argument that they posts in question do not constitute serious discussion stands - they do not explain the statements etc. And this is something the mods should be more serious about enforcing.

but by the above quote it shouldn't matter all that much whether they stay on topic or not. The arguable posts that you don't count in the topics favor are, to me, an important aspect of the thread. And why it stayed open. They constitute serious discussion which was taking place in the thread.
