It's not about staying on topic or not. Anybody who has been involved in a real discussion with other functioning human beings will know that the subject of discussion doesn't stay the same - it often goes off on tangents - so I don't mind if topics go off topic.
This is from the discussion section rules.

Your argument that they posts in question do not constitute serious discussion stands - they do not explain the statements etc. And this is something the mods should be more serious about enforcing.

but by the above quote it shouldn't matter all that much whether they stay on topic or not. The arguable posts that you don't count in the topics favor are, to me, an important aspect of the thread. And why it stayed open. They constitute serious discussion which was taking place in the thread.
Sure, but you really took that post out of context. When the entire discussion evolves to a different topic, that is natural. When somebody randomly posts something completely unrelated to the topic and without anything meaningful behind that, the rules say that "I usually delete those posts." Also, as I'm sure you're aware, I did concede that the posts on the subject of whether the topic should be locked or not could be seen as not breaking the rules, but those are people advocating that the topic be locked! so they hardly support the idea that that's a topic that shouldn't be.

I don't get all the fuss.

Sex is sex. We've all seen a penis. We've all seen a vagina. If not in real-life, on the internet.

We need sex to procreate. It is considered by many to be the meaning of existence (debatable but valid, don't want to go off topic with this).

So what is there to censor? Whats the big fucking deal?

Some people jerk-off to porn. Oh well, how does it affect any of us? Didn't they teach us in school that masturbation is ok? And I automatically disbelieve anyone who says they've never masturbated.

Why censor any of it at all? I don't get it, it's honestly way above my head. I understand that the argument in the orginial post also refers to the maturity level of the post, but as long as it doesn't come across as disrespectful who gives a shit?

If people are so pissy about youngsters, who are not registered, finding this site through google and reading all of the 'offensive' material, why not make it unavailable unless you register.

And even then, why not make up a system to categorize offensive material. Give the original poster a choice to make the thread available to everyone, or only people over a certain age. It just takes a little common sense to tell what threads have such subject matter in them...If the thread is called " The joys of butt-sex and why you should be having it. " then odds are...It's going to be offensive to some people, and they shouldn't view it.

Of all the forums I've ever been a member of, this becomes a common occurrence. One of them has even gotten rid of a general discussion thread because of all the bullshit it caused. It works just fine, people come to the board to talk about the topic of the board, and very little else. If people wish to talk about their penises with each other, that's obviously something that should be left out of the forums and in private. However,if some-one wants to have a meaningful conversation about the effects of sex in the media, and how it is desensitizing people to the act of sex, I think that should be allowed.

Why not place a label on the tag of the the discussion forum, or something of that matter:

Warning: This subforum may contain material that some would find offensive. Parental discretion is advised for minors.

Something tells me that no one gives a fuck that you find sexual topics offensive.

Most subjects that involve voting require a 2/3s vote to win. Even if Modified based it's rules on voting, this still wouldn't even come close. This topic itself is one of the shittiest topics I've read on this site.

Jeremy.. you act like you're fuckin' god or something. It's just like with the constitution. Just be you WROTE the rules, doesn't mean those rules are CORRECT. As time passes, time changes, and rules change with the time, just like the constitution. This is the only comparison that I can run though my head atm that makes sense. It's as if Washington came forward in time and bitched about someone burning the flag...

Well like I said, times change. Kids are haveing sex, and it will not stop just because some footbag forum decided to ban the topics about sex. So there really CAN'T be any goal to your bitching here...

I'm not opposed to discussing sex, I'm opposed to the discussion forum being clogged up with topics that don't allow for discussion about crass and immature topics. The specific topic is clearly not an appropriate topic to discuss in public. A more serious topic about sex would be fine.

Regarding the rules; you are right that they may not be right, but if the moderators are going to use those rules, or justify their decisions based on those rules, then they should use them correctly, and if they're going to use different rules, they should write new rules.

edit; And Fred, according to the poll, the majority of people on this forum think that all topics that are sexually explicit are inappropriate. Do you think the moderators will respond to what the majority of the forum wants, or at least compromise, and get rid of the topics that clearly have no real value (and if you think that topic does have value that couldn't be achieved through a more socially acceptable topic, please explain what that value is)? Or do the moderators make their decisions before seeing what people want, and then try to convince them that they're decision is the right one?

Why don't you two take a break from this petty pissing match you're in and take a good long time out to come up with something productive.

Is constantly getting at each others' throats for the sake of a few dirty words really worth it?

Like I said in my post, I think the mods do need to be stricter in the discussion section with pointless posts that don't contribute to the discussion. we should just delete the posts and Pm the poster to let them know why. I think locking the thread should only be alast resort, especailly when there are other posts with ongoing discussion in them.

However, this is a seperate issue from whether or not the nature of the topic is inappropriate.

As for the poll results - I stated from the outset that we weren't going to adopt a new policy based on those numbers, and I also stated why.
Or do the moderators make their decisions before seeing what people want, and then try to convince them that they're decision is the right one?

We're not going to ask the whole community what we should do in each individual case before making every decision. But the rules we're put up for discussion before they were implemented and they are up for constant discussion and we make our judgemets based on those rules and the discussion surrounding them.

Intelligent, enriching, interesting, adult conversations about sex? Anytime.

Stupid, meaningless talk about sex (maybe just to subtly make a statement that you had a blowjob before)? Go to 4chan.

According to who?

Again, this is just your opinion. Maybe you have some weird sexual insecurity, maybe not. Who the fuck knows? Point is, the topic was not intended to be, nor was it presented to be offensive. It was a serious topic, asking as serious question. Some responses (that were on topic) where somewhat graphic, but you take the good with the bad, but others were geniune responses, some that had ways of leading to other conversation. Like the following quote.
slapdash21 wrote:i think for some reason i like oral more in my mind than i do in practice, because i thinki love getting oral, but im disappointed everytime i do. yeah, i definitely believe thats partly related to the abilities of those few who have actually made the mistake of so gratifying me, but i think almost nothing sexual is as good in reality as you imagine it being in your head, even after you first experience it.
I really really wanted to delve into that subject, but you and the other spammers made sure that topic died. So, now I'm gonna have to make a new topic (about sex) with that subject in it. (When I get around to it of course.) And risk getting that topic spammed to shit as well.

I just think it's stupid that this forum get bogged down with horny loser teenagers who want to discuss their imaginary sex lives. Oooh you've gotten laid a couple times, now you have to share it with the whole footbag community? And can't that be kept in private?

It's honestly just stupid to me. There's tons of sites where that's all people talk about, why not just go there where EVERYONE enjoys it. Here, according to the poll, over half that voted do not enjoy seeing the forum get clogged up with blow job threads, or how you wipe your ass threads, pussy-eating threads, it's just not what people want to read about at a footbag forum.

I find it disrespectful for the clear lack of etiquette it shows. If you know nothing of etiquette then you're blissfully ignorant to why you are offending half the people.

And the mods are ALWAYS slow to move a topic away from KC. I never even go to Discussion anymore, so if they DID all originate and stay there I probably wouldn't have even noticed. But people find they have to post here first because they want to annoy browsers, and also get more views and replies for their topic.

In conclusion, Dylan will not budge on this issue, so there's no more to say on my end. I'd be willing to entertain any compromise, but I know that is too much to ask from this moderation team or the previous one. Over half the users felt it was a problem, but clearly democracy is non-existent here, and is more of a 'Lord of the Flies' style, Anarchy government. Have fun being ignorant and disrespectful your whole life, it's utterly disgusting to me.

I just have to chime in. In my opinion, this is a totally stupid thread. Of course people should be able to talk about sexually explicit things. The kicking circle is for things that have nothing to do with footbag, and that's where sexual talk goes. It is a choice to post, and it is a choice to read a thread. It is a choice to become offended, and it is a choice to brush something off as internet silliness. This forum is excellent because of the choices we have; when people start to take away my choices, that's when I stop enjoying it.

If I want to talk about how Ken Somolinos flew to CA last weekend just to stick his thumb up a midget's ass, I should be able to express the truth. As long as I provide a disclaimer about the type of information I will be disseminating, I am providing potential readers with the information they need to make an informed choice about whether to read it or not.

BTW, he really did come, and no, I am not a midget.

That was an annoying comment... who the hell has been posting to "show off" their sex lives? I haven't seen any topics like this, and I can count the actual posts like that on one hand.

Don't mistake your idiot friends for the average sexually active teenager.

And that's why Kicking Circle and Discussion on there. They are for NON FOOTBAG RELATED TOPICS. It really can not be spelt out any clearer.

Nice opinion. But etiquette is pointless, and in someways, just an utter lie. The only time I intentionally, enforce good etiquette, is in the military, and that only because I'm required to.

Etiquette = stresser, stress = shorter life expectancy.

You know how you see the forum called, "Discussion," and you recognize it as a forum you don't want to read... and then you don't click it... Do the same thing for topics, and you'll be fine.

So far, all I'm hearing is people bitching about their own lack of self controll. If you don't wanna fuckin' read a Playboy magazine, don't open the fuckin' cover.

More than 50% vote... Democracy? Ha ha. If you're gonna talk about democracy, maybe you should think about the fact that a VASTE majority of voting systems require a 2/3 vote overturn. That means 66.6% or more to win. So that complaint just became invalid.

And once again... if it's sooooo utterly disgursting to you, then why in the hell are you reading it?

Well, you people have obviously missed my point entirely. You have no concept of respecting people's space. I don't care if Tsangsun or whatever his name is happens to be 'on a roll' lately, or people just love how edgy Switch can be with his 'logic', I believe people should respect each other's space, and this isn't a sex forum, it's a footbag forum.

Less than half of you that voted feel otherwise, fine. What's honestly hilarious to me though is that we have such strict rules against things like "Oh that's so GAY!" and "You're being a retard!". The reason for the rule is that it offends people. But it doesn't offend me, so why should I have to curb MY language for the sake of other people? You people are just blatant hypocrites with this stuff.

The point is I would choose NOT to say gay or retard if I knew it offended a good deal of the users of the forum, even if I didn't have a problem with it myself. It's called respect. Something that Tkun and Switch and all of those guys lack. Period.

I know I said previous would be last, but I felt I was due at least one rebuttal on Switch's post, and I never got to use that analogy in this thread, and it's been bugging me for some time. Oh and I wasn't reading it Switch. I don't find the material as disgusting as your utter lack of respect for others. Okay done. Feel free to continue being retar..er I mean illogical.

Jesus zilla, how about a lil respect ? Could you try to be a little more european when you post ? that last brain fart of yours was completely uncalled for !

I think we are all wanting for people to use their best judgment and respect their community, and here you are getting all red state American on my ass.

I couldn't continue to express my opinion in this topic, because it does not bother me that much to whine about it. I understand both sides and kind of agree to both sides, but I definitely agree with Shredzilla's last post. Like I said in Matt's thread, I just lose any respect toward the ones who post disrespectfully.

This really may be something that the mods should not control, it is just something that people should be respectful about, but we all know this will never happen. Then again, I always thought that most of the laws in this world are just to keep the (insert derogatory language here)s in line, so maybe the mods do have to do something about this if it gets too out of hand.

I hate politics.

Just to expound on what I agree with in Jeremy's post: I first joined modified because it was an avenue to keep in contact with and have free and open discussions with a huge portion of my friends, both in real life and online. A lot of them have since stopped being active members and the community has changed a bit, but the essence is still there. It's still an open community of friends, and that's why I'm still here. If modified were to change to a kid-friendly, rigorously moderated footbag resource then I would no longer have any interest in it.

I would never participate in Switch Kicker's original thread (the one that started this whole debate), it's just not something I want to talk about on a public forum, but I like knowing that it is my choice to make.

Also, I think people give the mods way to much shit. They've got personal lives outside of the time they volunteer to the modified community and it's ridiculous to get pissy if they don't manage to avert your eyes for you every time an offensive post is made. Other than the Legoman thing going on a bit long I think they've been doing a fantastic job.
