The Holliday Kid - Still Drilling

Post by Holliday »

Heya! I'm finding the need to track my progress through this sport I am so exited about! So here it goes, feel free to post, doesn't matter what about.

Okay, So to start, I (sad to say) have known about freestyle for about two years now, but I just recently started to get into it. What spurred me to get full swing into it was my recent purchase of my first 32!!! Thanks a ton Aaron! You rock. I have yet to get a pair of lavers, but I'd jump on a good deal if it comes up. At the moment, I'm shredding in my Salomon cross country shoes , which are surprisingly comfortable and good for playing in. I would go out and get a pair of lavers, but my feet have grown 4 sizes in the past year... so I figured I'd just wait a bit.

Only just recently getting into freestyle, I have been playing "hacky" for ages now, and my consecutive hits are only limited to the amount of time I want to put into them. :D However, before my 32, I was playing with a very old Sandmaster that looks more like a flat baseball than a hackysack... Especially compared to my almost mini! This means that I am basically learning everything all over again... But I just love this new bag, really got me full force into footbag now =)

My shreds are actually really loose, I want more structure in my practicing, which is what I'm going to use this footblog for.
What I can hit:

-Toe stalls are building to almost solid with this new bag
-Inside Stalls: Both Solid
-Clippers: Left side solid, right side semi solid
-ATW out: right foot only
-Leg over: BS semi solid

What I want to work towards in the near future:

-Pixies and Pixie sets.
-Osis!
-Mirage!!
-Not hunching over! I catch myself doing it all the time

I have a very deep love for footbag and will work my hardest to reach tiltless by the end of the summer, correction, I will reach tiltless by the end of the summer! :D

Feel free to add suggestions (who knows what on 8O ) or if you live in the ABQ, New Mexico area, hit me up! I travel between ABQ and Santa Fe a lot, so I'm up for traveling a little ways. I might even post some videos if I feel the need too for a trick.

Thanks, and keep shreding!

With that all written, I've decided to post my first full shred with this new bag.

-started off with about 5 mins of stretching.
-Moved onto some consecutive hits to get warmed up
-Next I did about 30 consecutive toe stalls, then inside stalls.
-Clippers after that, I can't alternate clippers, odd motion and can't get the timing, but I just add a kick or toe stall in between each one.

-Highlight string: Toe>Opp Clipper>SS toe>leg over>ATW>catch :D

That's quite the accomplishment for me! I was quite happy.
-Ended with 5 mins of stretching.

LOVE shreding, even if I suck. I found a nice place that over-looks the apartment pool and has a red bull machine too!

Hi Max,
Glad you're finally on modified. I hope to see plenty more posts in this blog about your progress :)

You've got the right idea. Stretch and warm up are key to protecting your body against injury. However, one small tip if I may, warm up FIRST, then stretch second. "Cold" muscle does not stretch as much as "warm" muscle. You can warm up with anything, kicks, jumping jacks, jogging in place etc. Just make sure to get your muscles warm, THEN stretch them. Then of course, you'll want to stretch at the end too, just like you did.

Props on the string. Don't be afraid to throw in toe stalls or kicks to keep your strings going. You can start striving for tiltless once you can do more 2's.

It's funny, when I think about the time I was most enamored with footbag it was when I was just starting freestyle and I couldn't do a damn thing (not that I don't still love it now). This may sound crazy but enjoy this phase. Enjoy everything being a challenge. Enjoy everything seeming impossible and daydreaming about being good one day. The great thing about footbag is that you can be a total n00b and still have a blast playing.

Also one last thing. Try consecutive clippers one on side instead of alternating clippers (they are tricky in the beginning). Consecutive clippers on each side will really help with endurance and getting the form right. Remember it's all in the support leg.. Try to get 10 on each side.

Thanks for responding Bed. Wouldn't be able to post here if it wasn't for your help.

I don't know how many times my cross country coach said: "warm up first, then stretch!" She'd slap me for forgetting... But I did it today =)

My shred started off pretty uneventful, I went my usual spot by the pool (which is still closed for the winter) and started 50 consecutive hits to warm up. After which I stretched and went into toe stalls.

However, about 15 toe stalls in, a man with his two daughters walk up and he not-so-kindly asks me to leave. I politely asked if I was doing something wrong, and he said he didn't want my drug influencing hobby around his daughters...... :x This really ticked me off, and I felt like letting that guy have it. But I didn't give a fuss, and just moved to a different area. He was obviously referring to my footbaging, holding the stereotype that all footbagers do drugs... Wish there was something we could do to correct that stereotype!

Anyway, after I moved to a different spot, I finished up my toe stalls and moved into clippers. Attempting to hit 10 consecutive clippers was a lot harder than i suspected, but I was able to get 6 on my left side (that is, left side, right foot) and only 4 on my right side... :( But no worries, I'll keep working on it.

After playing around with some leg overs and ATW, I was just about to call it quits when I remembered a trick I wanted to attempt, the Fairy! Setting from my right foot, I easily hit it first try! Very happy to land a new trick. Only problem I had attempting it again was my left foot didn't want to stall it after the dex, It just wanted to toss it back up before I could get the sall in... But that's just going to take work.

My shred only lasted about 35 mins, but that's just about all my lazy butt can handle right now. Winter just finished after all, I've been inside all season. :D

I might take a picture of my shoes later, I feel they're great shred shoes.

Peace

EDIT: Here they be:

I love em :D Arg! Something must be wrong with the shutter speed on my camera, Looks blurry... But as you can see, the toe box doesn't have walls, but it's still great for a mini, insides aren't bad either. Plus, it's a cross country shoe, so it's light.

You should've said you've never done drugs before. (If you have to lie, then just do so :D ) Then follow that up with the whole "footbag helps me keep out of drugs" bit.

Cool shoes BTW.

Thanks! Think they'll be able to substitute Lavers for the time being?

I would have had to lie, and I didn't want to get into an argument, wasn't worth it. I'd rather be polite than a nuisance.

No shred for today, my GPA fell to a 3.9 now, so I basically can't do crap.

However, I'm going on a 5 day backpacking trip through New Mexico, Colorado border, I hope I'll be able to get in a couple of shreds there. :D

Peace, cya all when I get back!

Keep shredin'!!!!

Well if you never owned a pair of laverss before i'd suggest getting them. They really help. or better yet get quantum02's. I like them a lot more then lavs and they are shreddable right out the box.

try these drills.
Legover>atw>rpt on opp side
Clipper>clipper > rpt as much as possible
legover>opp legover>rpt as much as possible

Those drills really helped me improve.

I don't care about the representation of the sport, I would've just been like "fuck you."

And as said before, lavers really do help.

And do everything BOTH SIDES.
