Yeah, he showed up with a couple friends and played squares. Freddy, Marty & Tony didn't make it but Andre came out. The day started with Ronnie and I getting to the park to set up the net, which was almost perfect other than the fact that its was going east/west. Nathan, Vince & Andre soon showed up and we warmed up by playing squares. After a game or two, Vince and I switched to the net court. It was painfully evident at how rusty we had gotten over the winter break. We volleyed for a while until Josh and Jake arrived. Josh was on his sleek new road bike. We played 2 games of doubles, switching teams after each one. We took a little break and I got a chance to ride Josh's bike for a bit. Wow, so smooooooth. It's got those sweet break levers that also shift the gears.

The twins shred with Nathan and Vince left for the day after I had exchanged a shirt he had gotten from me earlier last year. Javier and his friends arrived and we all jumped into the squares with Ronnie and Andre. I'm glad Javi still played. Carrie finally showed up after her bowling league - drunk. Lol. We volleyed over the net for a few minutes before she called it quits. I think she convinced me to go open at WCC. Well, we'll see. Yesterdays performance was pretty shitty. Fun, but shitty. But it was the first session of the year, though.

After Carrie left, I played one more game of squares before we all called it quits for the day. I could already feel my legs getting tight from net well before we ended the session.

Some thoughts on yesterday:
--Vince got into net the same time I did but he just wants to play games. Problem is we both still suck. You ever see a net match with 2 beginners? It's pretty pathetic, but that's pretty much us. He said he really doesn't like drilling or practicing so I stopped suggesting things to practice. I mean, I like to play but I really NEED to practice.

--Ronnie is really starting to show some confidence in the squares and I can see his game steadily growing solid but every so often he does things that completely defies logic. Charging knee for example

--Overheard on the walk back to Ronnies car, "I liked what you said earlier about how if you don't think about AIDS, it's like its not even there." I was on the ground within a second of hearing that and laughing my ass off! It took me a while to et back up. People had to walk around me to get by, hehe.

Hey some friends in my photo class said they saw people playing footbag at the Jefferson Park station over the weekend. She mentioned how huge their calves were. Was it someone here? Sounds like Jake or Josh.

Hey guys, Ellen is taking her tv show to Chicago in May and is looking for stuff to do there. I was thinking it would be great for the CIC's talent to be showcased. It might be worth checking out. She's generally pretty supportive of "odd" talents.

Anyone unable to make it out to Palatine:

Navy Pier Sunday @ 2pm. Second floor, above Riva bar and restaurant. I may show up earlier if I can convince some of the Net players to come out and drill. For whatever reason they seem to have a hard time comprehending how playing at the pier would be possible... perhaps I should have made it clear that I did not intend to set up a court, just power kick and drill some basics.

Today's session started out with Net practice. I met up with Scot, Cory & Vince at the pier around 12:15. All 4 of us power kicked before breaking up into pairs. Vince got the unfortunate pleasure of doing mini monster drills with Scot while Cory and I power kicked some more. Vince and I are in terrible shape  :D . I was out of breath after a few minutes and my lungs ached.

After warming up we played "gentlemanly" net in with an imaginary court. We had several good rallies. One started with me digging a wild serve from Scot and Cory following up my set with wicked toe jam right into Vince's nuts! He took it well, all things considered. It took about another 5 minutes for the laughing (mostly mine) to completely stop. Not too long after I turned around to dig a high pass and kicked one of the diagonal beams with my left foot - really, really hard. So hard, in fact that there's still tan colored pain on my shoe. I hit the floor, laughing at the stupidity of it all and despite being in a great amount of pain. That pretty much finished up the net session for me.

Oakes had arrived by this time. We had kicked with him a few times a couple of years ago. He's a much better kicker than I remember. Vince stuck around a little bit after the other net players left. The three of us hacked and had some good long rallies. Nathan and Andre soon joined the circle. For whatever the reason, the conversations got gayer and gayer everytime someone joined the circle...

Vince eventually left to have dinner at his mother's and the conversations instantly became more hetero and less random. Coincidence?. We set up the 4S court and played 3 fun games. Again, I was impressed with Oakes' game. He was getting kills with some good fakes right off the bat. Andre was doing a better job of keeping the bag in bounds and Nathan's defense won him all 3 games. He was a good sport even when his defense was lacking got killed 4 times in a row  I played with no shoes the whole time and managed to stay competitive. I didn't have the control I usually have so I banged the bag back over at pretty much every opportunity. I even managed to get a fart kill and a squid fingers kill

Anyone down for kicking downtown tomorrow in the late afternoon? Like starting between 5 & 6?

I can't decide whether or not to comment on the whale penis.

The timing of it all is hilarious to me because Reile and I watched some squid expert gently (& repeatedly) juicing a dead squid's wang on the History Channel not too long ago.

Note to all: do not ride trains with members of CIC.

I'm gonna go kick at Millennium Park tonight and have my sexy headband admired by tourists.

There's now an exactly 0% chance of me kicking tomorrow.

I'm setting up the jam for this weekend, right now I'm thinking Sunday at Welles 2 o'clock. Hollerbach if you want to suggest another time.

Sunday was a good old fashioned squares session. Good games, great plays, lots of laughs. Nathan and I had some epic duels while at the lake and played strong during 4S at Welles. Ronnie continued his solid play But Andre really impressed me the most. He did a good job of keeping the bag in the court and killing others instead of taking himself out. The work he did on his left back kick payed off as well. What was really great was the fake at the line catching more than a few of us off guard on many occasions

My play was a little streaky throughout the afternoon but when my game was on, it was straight brutal. I landed more than a few Sweep & Screens right near the line, dinks from the back court, careful use of axe kicks, power shots and even my Praying Mantis killed just about every time I used it.

Shot of the day was set up when Josh booted Andre and got the kill. Andre got some payback with a boot of his own on Josh. While I was in ksq, Josh wound up for a boot from 2sq and I jumped to the right to avoid the blast and he calmly dinked to my left corner for an easy ace. I stood there stunned as he pointed at me, smiled and walked into the next square. I gave him props.

But since this is my entry, I'll end it with one of my own. For the last play of the day, I served game point to Nathan in 3sq we exchanged a few volleys before I ended up kicking it up and out of bounds, about 4 feet out of Nathan's left side. Determined to get it back in for the win, I chased after it. Nathan, determined to stop me at all costs hit me with a solid check. But I already had my right foot extended when the hit came and I managed to get a decent contact on the bag and kicked it right into the empty 3sq for the win. I never saw where the bag landed but judging from the reaction from squares 1 & 2 I knew I got lucky and landed it. I think instead of watching, they should have covered Nathan's back.

I've got to give you props, that was an awesome win. I kinda felt bad about the check afterwards, cause it was mostly elbow into your ribs.

I'mma go shred now at Millennium. Maybe my hip will crack.
