Beautifully done, Matt, whatever it winds up being called.

I have one question, though, (although I imagine this discussion's been had already with dragon stepping or some such.)

To what extent does it matter that the trick came from dragon? Is it a unique trick from clipper swirling stepping butterfly, e.g. for shred 30 purposes (I know it's not really a shred 30 kind of trick, but hypothetically...) Does it merit a different name?

I guess that's two questions and I lied above.

Again, nice work anyhow. :D
My favorite trick is knowing when to pass.

like Ken said, it's totally legit. When I heard you hit this, I thought the swirl and step would be happening at the same exact moment - while this would still be cool, I think it's even cooler that you can literally see the swirl followed by a stepping set. No question. Very nice.

rob 1:

I'd say this is different from clipper swirling stepping. I'm doing dragon reverse swirling stepping.

let's assume you meant reverse swirling.

I think it is different from the clipper version. as shred 30 goes, I don't know and I don't care. I'm never going to be trying this trick under that circumstance. Wish I could answer better than that :)

rob 2:

thanks a lot dude. I had a feeling you'd appreciate this move.

well, I talked to adam about it, and basically, here's what we've figured out.

he was first to explore the concept as a set, but he never actually got it as an uptime thing. He did a midtimey dragon rev swirling op miraging op legover. I was first to get the set.

I want to call the set snapping [stepping / blurry] (as opposed to frowning, crossing, etc).

I guess if I was going to have a move legitimately named after me (not as a joke, which I've done plenty of times in the past), I would really like it to be a sweet move like this one, with a fresh set that's pretty much untouched, and good reason to call it a "walk".

So, I accept the name crosswalk for this move, and also, I really appreciate the community support for that name.

I've been into the game for a while now, so it was really great to have hit this move that's worth giving my name.

now it's time to get some 2 dex downtime out of it ;)

I saw this hit in person. I was quite literally blown away. :P 8)

I would definitely name the set "crossing," but I don't know about "Crosswalk" due to my talks with some footbaggers about naming and legitimizing "walk" moves. Like, if this move was dragon reverse swirling stepping op butterfly reverse swirling dragon, it would be called Crosswalk. It would be in the same light as whirlwalk in a way, I guess.

I didn't mean to bring this topic into a technical debate or anything, or delegitimizing the term "Crosswalk," but wanted to offer my views on this concept. I'm still really impressed that Matt hit this move, and it was such a joy to see him hit it at GRASS '08. :)

that doesn't make sense to me. most "walk" tricks aren't mirrored uptime and downtime. what about dimwalk and parkwalk?

either way, cool trick matt.

1. The only thing that matters is that this is an awesome trick and an awesome set. Everything else is moot.

2. There is no debate about naming rights. Matt hit it, he gets to name it, simple as that. My first post in this thread I was all hyped up about the trick, and I still think crosswalk is a great fit for the trick, but honestly, Matt can name it whatever he wants and that's legit, and people need to accept it.

3. I also don't understand Waylon's post. The convention for "walk" tricks is that they involve some sort of dex (usually a set), and end in a butterfly. Ripwalk, sidewalk, parkwalk, dimwalk, janiwalker, ewalk, bigwalk. All of the preceding are composed of a set, followed by a butterfly. The only exception I can think of to this rule is darkwalk, which is a set, midtime component, then a butterfly. Regardless, there are several "walk" tricks which are accepted in the community, which are not symmetrical tricks or rewinds. These include: parkwalk, ewalk, janiwalker, darkwalk, and whirlwalk (which doesn't end in butterfly, but is also not symmetrical).

4. I also like Crosswalk as a name, because it fits well with the history of naming walk tricks after people. Many don't know this, but parkwalk is actually named after a UPenn student who invented it: Chris Park. Janiwalker is named after Sunil Jani. Ewalk is named after Eli/Eliot/Ellis Piltz (the E is for his first initial). Dimwalk is named after Dimitri Kavouras. Ripwalk is named after Rippin. And Crosswalk would fit this pattern nicely.

5. Finally, I don't really think it is necessary to name a trick unless it is commonly used. Like, fairy gyro janiwalker is an awesome trick, but how many times are you going to see it and need to name it? Things like revup and wauxpin are common enough now that they need names. If Matt gets good enough at this new trick to bust it in runs, then a name is very necessary. Otherwise, a name is cute, but not functionally that necessary.

Ken,

I guess I was thinking too much about the symmetry and rewind of moves like whirlwalk and ripwalk as "walk" moves as you said. I usually think of moves like parkwalk as pixie ss butterfly and dimwalk as pixie op butterfly. And then there is also the exception of fairy with fairy beater which is technically a "walk" move in this sense. I don't know.

I still share the same sentiments that if a move is hit perfectly well and is purely unique, it should be up to him/her to name it. I was just a bit unsure in terms of some technical points. Still, "Crosswalk" is a very cool name for a move. And after reading your post about the history of "walk" moves and the name bearing some relevance to those that hit it, Crosswalk is a very nice (and recent) addition.

I just needed some clarification. Sorry if my thoughts made things uneasy.
