I've been writing about Genuine in my footblog lately, and after so much of positive feedback I've decided to let it all out here. Please read and think about it. I'm not hoping for a large conversation. Just write "I'm in" if you like the idea and want to give it a try. Or don't reply at all.
** What is Genuine?
Genuine used to mean no BOPs and no repeated moves. Nowadays it's refered only to Guiltless without the common bails: Butterfly, Osis and Paradox Mirage.
** Why Genuine?
Moving on to Genuine is one way to push this sport forwards. Amongst footbag players Genuine runs are seen more impressive than Guiltless, and it's a sign for control and concistency.
As a new step for the pros, this creates a new class of players. Those who can do the sick trikcs and links midstring, and those who can do them without using BOPs between. New bails will become more personal for each player, adding new diversity to the game. The difficulty of tricks used in runs will become more balanced, as players can't BOP out of big tricks.
Genuine does not prune any concepts out of the game, like for example Tripless does. Only three single tricks are eliminated.
** How to start playing Genuine?
In the beginning of normal freestyle career players have a solid goal to become Guiltless players one day, as the current level of pro players. Players move from Tiltless to Guiltless by slowly eliminating 2add tricks from their circle trick selection. Moving on to Genuine should happen the same way, except that it should be the goal right from the beginning. Guiltless is just a phase before Genuine, just like Tiltless. What happens now is that player sticks to Guiltless, only increasing the level of the hardest tricks, and not rising the bar for the easiest ones. What should happen is that after becoming Guiltless, instead of working on new big tricks, player should start practicing Genuine and rely less on BOPs. Keeping this in mind from the beginning should help becoming Genuine one day.
At Guiltless when starting to work your way to Genuine you need a wide tricks selection in both uptime and downtime categories. Practice your strenghts so they become your new bails replacing BOPs.
** What is the future of Genuine?
I can only guess what is going to happen. Pros will be playing Genuine in circles. The definition of Genuine can be adjustet and more tricks left out, for example Dexless tricks.
** Closing Words
I strongly recommend everybody to give Genuine a try as a new challenge. It will be hard at first to freestyle without using BOPs, but once you get them out of your mind it gets easier.
Todays newbies are the new generation. Most of the current pros are too grown into BOPs to swiftly go Genuine.
The next level (Tripless) is not an option for the next level of pro players, because it prunes too many tricks out.
I wish to see more Genuine level videos in the future.
Would a Genuine circle at Worlds be too much to hope for?
Genuine
I like your presentation of the concept, incuding your recognition that new bails WILL develop for each person >> and that this is actually good becuase it will diversify which bails are commonly seen since each player has their own strengths. There will be common ones (e.g. ducking clipper) still, but I agree there woud be diversity.
I also like how you indicate this is a concept ultimately achieved by pros. It's silly for someone like me to approach this concept as you outlined it because I'm not a top pro. It makes more sense for me to be very solid on traditional guiltless first, and then incorporate the portions of your plan that are achievable given my talent level and time constraints etc. So, it leaves a future goal for someone like me, and provides push for other players more talented or committed.
In short, I don't have any issues with your idea, it seems like a flexible idea that would push similar to how guiltless previously pushed.
Oh, one more thing. Look how easy youn players achieve guiltless today. If they see a new standard, I predict many players will gravitate to it with more ease than expected.

see, now immediately i would have said there will be alot more bailing to ripwalks, as ducking clipper is a harder trick for some one like me, haha. Already you can see how bails would vary depending on the individual.Rieferman wrote:I like your presentation of the concept, incuding your recognition that new bails WILL develop for each person >> and that this is actually good becuase it will diversify which bails are commonly seen since each player has their own strengths. i like the idea and i see no problem with it. in fact, it's something i can see my self gravitating towards in a year or so when i'm a better player with a wider repatoire. my only question is what happens if i hit a butterfly mid string, or i repeat a trick within the same string whilst in a "genuine circle" if they become prevalent? would manners dictate that i pass the bag along

I like the concept of genuine a lot, I've been trying to shred like that for some time now. It was hard at the beggining, but I'm slowly getting better at it. I still use BOPs often, but when I'm warmed up I'm able to do runs without them. My first run on my last video (The Triptych) is BOP-free, even though the average difficulty is not high I'm happy with how it looks. I will definitely practice genuine shred, to maybe get rid of BOPs completely one day
