spiky bags?

So what's the deal with spiky bags? Are the spikes purely aesthetic or do they have some magical effect on how the bag plays?

Also do you just have to stitch the spikes into the hex to hex seam sewing all 3 layers together? or do you just do 2 so it still has the function of a bleed hole?

WHATS THE DEAL?? Any reply would be appreciated

Sew the spike into one side of the bleed hole I believe, so you can still have them.

They're aesthetic and nothing else.

You answered your own question.

The spikes makes the bag a bit rollier, but not so much that you should worry about them. It's purely based on aesthetics.

I think it's easier for the eyes and your hands to stitch regular 32s, than stitching spikey 32s. That's just me. Obviously there is a market for spikey bags; I just prefer my 32s to look more simplistic. It's a worthy challenge if you're up to it.

ha ye well i knew how it could be done but wanted to know if in general people sew 2 or 3 layers together, keeping or losing bleed holes

well id like to be able to stitch them just as another possible direction and as im still waiting for my shot thought id give it a try for some practice

might be a dumb question but why doesnt any one put spikes into the non bleedhole seams? wouldnt that be easier since the bleed holes would be the same as a regular 32 panel?

Sonny, your question presupposes that no one does this, which isn't the case. I know Danny Botkin has, and I could swear that I've seen pictures of this in the past on modified from other stitchers, and I can say for certain that I've read stitchers' speculation about this.

i think ben rea put spikes on the sides of the pents on his twelves... but then again, twelves dont have bleedholes

I have also seen older FootFighters with spikes along the pent sides. Looked pretty cool.

EDIT: Also, when spikes are attached in between hexes, it does not eliminate the bleed hole.

I use the spikes on my sonic to easily discern the spin on the bag. Ideally the bag should have no spin when set otherwise the bag will have a rolling moment when it hits the shoe.

jorden moir used a bag with spikes during the all four limbs show at sjff6.... it looked awesome.

like that special effect some videos have to highlight the bag, only reallife.

I have only made one spike bag, and it's not purely aesthetic.

Long spikes totally help pay attention to stability of sets. Also, when set, long spikes make the bag way bigger which can be great for training, making a smaller bag far easier to get around.

In Lon's crazy old used bag collection there is one with a kind of rectangle along some of the pents. I forget who made it though...
