2. May 2005

Regular monday outdoor session.

Jason from Karlsruhe is in town for couple of days, crashing at my place.
Philip and Markus from LA were there, so it was 7 of us.

I modified my G-Units and played my first session in it. Clipper is FANTASTIC. I have so much more control on my butters, osii etc now.
The toe feels a little different, I don't know why, but I have to get used
to it. It's neither worse nor better though. But the cushioning is much
better than the good ole' Lavers. Had no shin splints and no calf pains
at all.

Hit the Far butterfly>infinity>ss osis>rpt drill 4-5 times, which is a record!
also, far osis>ss osis>rpt 8-9 times.

My runs weren't too long, mainly because I have to get used to the G's.
But we played for over 3 hours, and I played without pains.

Back at home, Jason, Philip, Mike and me got loads of Pizza and beer
and chilled in my garden. Later, I showed Jason and Mike the weird
wickedness of Jorden's Whack +Hardcore session :)

I'm so stoked for Footjam. So many international players are coming -
Kenny, Carol, Eric Wulff, Ellis and Caro, Lise, Ian from Australia, Andrew
Grant, Felix etc..it's gonna be so big. I just hope my legs will let me shred
at least a little bit.

The Golfjam sound very promising as well - I can't wait. And Flipsider is
making this year's footjam documentary! Woo!

Mmh Footbag.

Regular monday gym session.

Players: Daryl, Angrod, Max, Bea, me.

First half of the session drilling, then runs with Max.
Drilled mainly BOP's and it went well.

Had one 25-30 contact run with 2-3 toe bails (stupid tilts)

New move: Tap
New link: Torque>Pdx Mirage (First time I ever hit something out
of a torque other than a toe bail)

Footjam 2005 13-16. May 2005
------------------------------------

FRIDAY

The Munich Crew (Max, Bea, Daryl, Max's girlfriend Svenja) arrived in Zrich in the early
evening hours. Mike from Landshut came by train, and we soon hooked up with him. The first
people we saw when we arrived at the Rote Fabrik were Ellis Piltz, Kenny Shults, Eric Wulff,
Carol Wedemeyer and Caro Bourgoin. What a first impression..

At the lake-site, we met the Czechs, Ali, Jason V., Andrew Grant and Ian Pritchard, who, to
my surprise, actually neither had a beard nor held a gun at his head (some might remember his
former avatar..) ;) The Danes were already there as well. (Tobias, Rasmus, Lise and dang, I
forgot his name)

Ian, Mike and Daryl were the first to shred it up, and Ian hit some mad shit. He got close to/hit
(? correct me on this, Ian, in case that you're reading this) Neutron Smasher, Quantum Paradon (?
again, I'm not sure on this)

In the evening we had a big BBQ going, and Klabautermann aka Fleischpeitsche ;)
(Ragga-MC from Berlin, who would have his gig on saturday after the finals) was serving grilled
goodies all night long. I talked a bit with Ellis, who was really nice and down to earth.

Felix shredded a bit in street shoes and full clothing, and easily hit stuff like whirling swirl,
ripsteins and lots of spinning/double spinning stuff.

There was lots of beer floating around everwhere, and apparently some drunk and passed out
Finnish guy burned all his hair off, got a complete hair shave from his friends and passed out
on the lawn.. ;)

SATURDAY

We were all woken up at 8 o'clock in the morning, because we had to leave the place we slept in
until 9. Meanwhile, the Crews from Vienna, Berlin, Paris and all over Switzerland had arrived.
After a good breakfast at the Rote Fabrik the first circles and 4 squares started. My knee hurt
like shit, I don't know why. I could hardly stand on one leg, and I couldn't even kick. Not even
4-Square. Competition started at noon, and some people like Karim, Andrew Grant and Serge from
France had incredible preliminary routines.
There was lots of food and drinks available for free all day, little fruit sticks, coffee, tea,
salads etc. just like last year.

After the preliminary open I talked to Kenny Shults, and he said he really liked the european
scene, there's so many awesome players he's never heard of before. He had troubles with his
right foot, and he also gave me some painkillers for my knee.
Kenny started to shred a bit with the Wolhusen Crew, and hit BIG APPLE SAUCE (we got it on tape,
thanks Mike) and lots of spinning combos. It was great to see him play.

The semi-finals and all the finals took place at the Aktionshalle, in front of about a 1,000
spectators, who payed 20 Swiss Francs to see the Freestyle Finals and the Ragga/Dancehall party
afterwards with Klabautermann and Redemtion Sound. It was such a good vibe, and after Semis there
was a big celebration - 5 years of Footjam, 5 years of Planetfootbag and 25 years of Rote Fabrik.
They had 1,000 chocolate muffins, and 30 of us passed them around through the crowd. Mmh.

The Finals were great, even though some players like Karim, Felix or Verena were a bit unlucky
with their routines. Tina Aeberli won the finals with a great routine with Blurry Whirl midstring
and lots of other good shit, Vasek won with another flawless routine, followed by Reni Zlli,
who had an awesome routine, with lots of choreography and skill. Felix took 3rd, Stefan 4th.
In my opinion, the men's finals were quite a close vote.

Between the finals they had some other cool stuff going - Dennis from Berlin literally rocked
the house with his awesome Yo-Yo routine - he is one of european's best Yo-Yo players and already
played at 5 other footbag tourneys, including Worlds 2003 in Prague. Another man with fast feet
was a Tap Dancer whose name I forgot, but he was pretty cool as well.

I filmed a lot of the circles that went down after the finals, and people like Serge and
Arthur from France, Andrew Grant and Ellis were really rippin' it up. The Finalists didn't
shred at all, they had party in the backstage area.
The party was GREAT. Everybody was so cool, and I had best times with everybody, especially
Dennis, the Yo-Yo Master, who I met for the first time, was so cool.

SUNDAY

After merely 4 hours of sleep we were woken up by Jan again (singing "Footbagspieler sind
intelektuell, intelektuell, intelektuell", and a good breakfast was a good way to start the
day. Some of us were Cupstacking (I think Jakob Wagner brought them with him, and he's pretty
fast already), and at 1 o'clock the golf tournament began. There were 5 holes spread all over
Zurich, and each team was given a map and free transportation passes to find the holes on their
own. On every hole there were 2-3 bonus questions which, when answered correctly, would lower
your total kick score. Our team: Jason Varvaro, Micha from Chemnitz, Dennis Yo-Yo, Schubi and me.
It was great fun to walk/drive trough the city and try to find the holes. We were lazy at the
beginning and chilled at the park for an hour or so, and when we needed to cross the Zurich-Lake
in order to get to the next hole, we and 2 other teams would miss 3 ferries, because all were
full before we could get on it. So we left out hole 3, and went straigt on to the next. One was
around a church, all uphill, with par 8, another was in a park full with people, another one
next to the lake (where Schubi had to get into the ice-cold water to retrieve his driver-bag...
before the French Crew came and told us that we were playing the hole the wrong way, starting
at the end point.. ;) ).

We arrived back at the Silhlzli in time before Dinner. At Dinner time, Felix and Vasek were
shredding together, and there was this big circle around them - everybody was sitting around them,
watching and eating - it was such a cool atmosphere, everybody watching 2 of the worlds best
players trying ridiculous moves like Alpine Janiwalker, Felix tried his Barraging symp Nuclear
set, went for double spinning pdx Blender (not sure if he hit it that weekend though). Vasek's
pet peeve seems to be stepping ducking lately, for he had runs with 8-9 Ripped Warriors in it,
with at least 5 Ripped Warriors back to back. Delicious. It was cool to see both of them hitting
insane combos and seeing Kenny's jaw dropping to the floor.. :)

Later, more 4 square action ensued - and I could play again, because my knee felt much better.
I hit 20+ Osii b2b twice, which is a record for me.

In the evening, we all went back to the Rote Fabrik, where the players party took place. We took
the public bus, and I talked with Kenny Shults about the beginnings of freestyle during the whole
ride, how people took Freestyle when he started out with it, how it evolved and so on. It was really
interesting to get such an insight about Freestyle, and Kenny is such a nice person.

During the players party, I managed to get some more footage of many people, and I can't wait
to look through all the 5 tapes and make the video. Daryl was shredding hard, he was the last
man shredding at that day, only to be the first one the next morning getting into his shorts
and shredding again...
Mike, Daryl, Jakob Mai and me took a taxi to get back to the Silhlzli gym where we slept again.

MONDAY

After some more 5 hours of sleep we had breakfast with Bircher Muesli, lots of bread, jam and
nutella and even more coffee, we had more shred and 4square going, and the net semifinals started.
The Net Finals were incredible, it was raining like shit (actually, it was raining since the
second semi-final, where Kenny and Eric defeated 2 guys from Montpellier, France, whose names
I don't know - I'm still pretty unfamiliar with Net.

In the Finals, Kenny Shults and Eric Wulff played Florian Goetze and Patrick (?) from Germany.
It was top-class, ending something like 11-15, 15-10 and 15-3 for the german team. Even though
it was raining like crazy and both the ground and the bag were totally slippery, both teams
played top-class Net Footbag. I think Eric didn't miss a single spike in the finals.

Then, in the tent, a Big Band started to play, playing some good-mood swing from the 30's + 40's.
There was Barbeque and more beer, and between 5 and 6 in the evening Mike and me went with Jochen
Bauer, who drove as back to munich. The rest of the munich-footbag crew had left before the
finals. Too bad they didn't witness the fitness.

Footjam was easily the best tournament ever. Jan's organisation skills are unmatched, everything
went so tight, there were like 6 different T-Shirts to buy (one of them was for free), there
was food and drinks for free all weekend, everybody got a cool Planetfootbag 1litre drinking
bottle, 1 year IFPA membership, and the best times one can have, for an entry fee of merely
30 Swiss Francs, which is 20 Euros. Big thanks to Jan, his organisation crew, all the people who
were there all weekend just to make us food, to the Rote Fabrik (we're still the only people who
were ever allowed to sleep inside the Rote Fabrik in their 25 year history), and everybody else
who made Footjam 2005 so great.

today is my fourth session in physio therapy. they have never before
seen a similar inury, but have located a point in the calf where the
pain comes from, and it's similar to a "knot" in the shoulders/back when
you're verspannt. I'm getting massages and hot fango packs, and I
burned a footbag cd for my physio therapist, because she had never
seen it before..

you'll have to wait for some weeks for the footjam video I guess - I have hardly any
spare time right now. Right now I'm getting the rest of the footage on
the computer, but the hard part will be cutting the video. Don't expect
a video before 2-3 weeks. I'm gonna be on holiday with my girlfriend
all week.

i have one more session of physio therapy, and I hope my calf will be
fine, but I'll be out for a while anyway because my right knee is still troubling
me quite a bit. I'll take it slow and try to get back in shape before
I start shredding again.

but I hit a nice run in full work clothing with a ring of keys:
mirage>legover>ss osis>far legover>butterfly

and a keyring ducking clipper.

my physio therapy has ended and my calf feels good. still, my knee
is fucked up, so don't expect me to show up in training before july
probably.

edit: 4 hours in front of premiere and the first raw cut of saturday's footage from Footjam is finished - and it's 20 minutes long already.
there's lots of work to do still, so don't expect anything too soon.

German Footbag Open 2005

Friday

My trip began on friday 14:00 o'clock, with an easy ride in a Mercedes C-Klasse with a guy who charged 25 Euros for it. After a couple of
traffic jams we finally arrived in Berlin, and I went straight to the OSZ, the gym where everybody was supposed to sleep in. First person
I met was Daryl, who just as surprised as me :) I've instantly met so many cool people again, like Rasmus, Jason, Dennis the Yo-Yo master,
Ali, Verena, Berlin Crew, Uve from Estonia, Honza and so many more. I finally met Ilja, the maker of my bag, and Felix and Lasse were there too,
as well as Madsx2 and Lise. Not to forget the whole Dortmund Crew!

The players party took place in a small really-berlinish-underground club, in a cellar in a typical Berlin backyard. A pretty small club with 3 mini-
rooms full of couches, and a bar and a DJ table - it was so small that most of the people were outside in backyard.
Later on that night, after some great and cheap arabian food with Jason, we went to bed early in the morning.

Saturday

We started the day with a nice breakfast buffet, and I met Szymon, Hania, Gosia and Viktor from Poland, who arrived early that morning.
Later on we moved to the YAAM, the event site of all freestyle competitions. It's a nice space right at the River Spree, where there used
to be a weekly African Market for years (it has moved to a new location now, but for GFO, it was at its original place again), so there were lots of
african food everywhere :)
The best thing though was the Badeschiff, which is basically a swimming swimming pool right in the river. Great to cool off after the shred sessions.

The DJ played lots of brazilian flavours, and I recognized so many tracks from the excellent 'Favela Chic' compilations, especially from the first
one.

Luckily, my knee was good to me that weekend, so I shredded my ass off again. This was the first competition where I actually could play since
last year's footjam, so it felt really good. I played in quite a few circles, and I already forgot the first circles I played in, but I remember playing
with 4square maniac Daniel from Frankfurt, with Ilja, Szymon, Viktor from Dortmund and Viktor from Poland, Nils, Munich Crew of course, Paul,
Jason etc etc.... I hit bubbabeater midstring for the first time, and twice even.

During qualification rounds, there already were many, many spectators, and the vibe was so great - good music, lots of summer and nice people
everywhere.

edit:Max had two good routines (he made it to semis!), and looked really comfortable during Semis. He hade some nice DLO's going (after
Daryl had pointed that out to him), and the crowd was cheering him on quite nicely..
In the evening, during semifinals, Ian finally arrived, who got ripped off by Easyjet and missed his flight yesterday. We instantly started to shred, although I was already feeling tired.

Vasek wasn't there by the way, because he had some promo shows going on somewhere.

The finals took place in combination with concerts and a drum'n'bass Party, in the same vein as the Footjam. It started with a short presentation
by Felix, who was insane all weekend, followed by women's finals, where Lise won 1st place!
The finals were top class, and it was cool to see Ners in the finals again. Felix went crazy and started the routine with a Whirr, and had Janiwalker
midrun. I can't remember Vasek doing a barraging trick in a final. He used to do lots of Barraging tricks in semifinals, but not in finals. Correct me
if I'm wrong though. Honza's routine was great as well, it was the Battleflag routine he'd already used for Todexon, but Felix was just too
good that day. I really liked that Stefan used a track from Fanfare Ciocarlia for his routine. I've always thought of using Brass Band sound
for a routine. Felix beatboxed on stage and really ripped it up.

edit:Behind the stage, Verena, Hania, Gosia, Hanka, Ian and me had a hack circle with a big inflatable smiley face, which was big fun!
All of us had this big grin all the time..

After the finals everybody gathered in the backstage room, where Honza and Felix teared it up. Felix hit like 7-8 consec. Whirrs, went for Surging
Mobius etc. He hit double spinning pdx blender cleanly as well. Oh, and he was close to surging ducking pdx blender again. (I think he has hit
this, isn't that cheese processor?). Honza had some insane combos as well, but I don't remember too much there, the beer had already taken
over my brain at that point.

Later on, pretty drunk, I shredded it up with Szymon in the backstage room, and I sweated all the alcohol out, and thanks to him, I hit a new
move, dedicated to Max because it was his birthday:
Far symposium reverse whirl, which is the closest I can get to a PS Whirl, concerning the feel of the move. It feels great, and it's not that
hard actually. I hit it like 7-8 times, and later on tried to rake it, but with no success. We played till 3:30 in the morning before we went back to the
Gym for some hours of sleep.

Sunday

After breakfast everybody went back to the YAAM. I was pretty tired and my legs were sore as hell, I could hardly do an inside kick. I still
shredded that day though, with Viktor, Ilka, Max and Daryl. I had typical t-Shirt sunburn, but luckily, there were some clouds that
day so it wasn't too hot. I played lots of foursquare, watched the net finals, were Flo Goetze won the singles, and witnessed a good shred:30
and some crazy sick3. Felix ripped it up in both categories again, hitting Surging Pdx Whirl>Blurry Whirl>Spinning Pdx Blender and Double Spinning
Clipper>Double Spinning Osis>Inspinning Osis. Woah.

After the competition, we played an improvised Golf in a park, and we had lots of fun there. It's always fun to play Golf with Schubi, and
Jason, Jakob Mai and Thorsten from Aachen were in our team.

I left GFO at half past 10, to get to my Mitfahrgelegenheit, a guy who works at BMW and had this big BMW to drive me home, with 200km/h
through the night...

Thanks to all organisers, Berlin Crew, Planet Footbag, all players for an unforgettable weekend!

It was great to meet many new people, like Ilja, Mr "Europe on Fire" Sebastian from Dortmund, FAB, Thorsten etc.

Sadly my beloved Abshire Mini was torn apart with lots of holes, after it had been used in 6-7 routines. So many people wanted it for their
routines, and I was happy to see the bag being used in the competition ;) Still, it needs quite a therapy now...

Hope to see you all at euros, and if I forgot anyone in my report, I'm sorry - I'm still tired from the weekend and haven't had proper sleep
yet!

GFO!!

My new move for that session was Weaving Legover (bs), not diving legover :)

It was so cool to play with my crew again after so much time. I haven't
played with Bea and Mike for so long. I hit some ok runs, but after a while
the pain in my calf slowly started to come back.

2 months of physio therapy and there we go again.

Which means I'm out for a while (AGAIN), and it's really pissing me off.

I think I have to focus on how to land softer. I once was drilling alternating
clippers, and Max, who hadn't seen what I was doing thought I'd practice
my stepping set.. 8O

The Footjam video is finally online. Phew. Spent the last 2 days trying
to upload the damn thing, now I had to split it in 5 parts.

I'm not playing again. I just try random tricks in full clothing from time to
time. Still - have to give clip set zulu legover a try now :)

.....

(10 minutes later)

New tricks for me (in full clothing again)

Clip set Zulu Legover (both sides, strong side on 2nd try)
Clip set Zulu mirage (both sides)

SCHOOOLS ON FOR SUMMER!

Yeah I'll be going to school again from september on - rock on daryl!

Pullach Flip-Open-Air-Festival was cool, we had a little hut were we sold the bags and had
some infos, there was lots of 4square, and Max, Bea, Alex (Bea's friend)
and me played lots. Since there was grass all around, I didn't feel my
calf nor my knee (I'm talking bout the surface here..). Anyway,

Alex hit his first mirages!

I hit:

2 clean far symple dynos (I'm so in love with this trick)
2 pixie reverse whirls
(new for me!)

and osis>far butterfly>infinity rpt was much more controlled than ever.
It's getting really good.

It was so cool that I was able to play.

Oh, and a new link: Osis>DLO felt rather easy too.

We sold a couple of bags, gave lots of info out and all in all it was a fun
day!
