It took approximately... forever... It was
so swollen for so long. It was weird too, that for a while it didn't hurt at all but it looked so bad. Try to show it off to the ladies, you'll get pity points.
My parents asked me to go to the Dr. because they had never seen an ankle sprained that badly before but the Dr. said it was just a sprain, not a break. He said it was still a good idea to get it checked out because it could have been broken or fractured. A bad sprain can take longer than a broken bone to heal, according to that Dr. They wanted me to walk on crutches. I still have scar tissue on my ankle from that sprain.
Ice and elevate. People say heat then ice and switch again, but I was told by several people that heat is actually a bad idea because it increases swelling since it increases blood flow. Or something like that.

Anyway, ice and elevate and keep it wrapped tightly enough to help support your weight. For me it was really tempting to walk on it since it was so swollen that I still felt supported. Don't do that.
Good luck.
