If you don't like competition, then don't compete. It doesn't have to be one polar opposite or the other.

I think one of the great things about footbag is that you can go to a tournament and play the game with everyone without necessarily having to compete.

I mean look at me, I get smoked at every tournament I go to, but I still compete because I like the pressure. It pushes me more than I can push myself.

Regarding (what I think is) the original point of the topic.. One major reason I'll probably never go to another event, is that the competition portion of the event is boring and pointless to me. e.g. Even if David (as an example) doesn't place 1st in an event, does anyone really think he's not the best player there in most cases?

Sorry, Bobby, but I'm with RawSko on this one. I actually like to compete, even if I'm sure to get beat badly. And, unlike your "Circle Revelation", so far its actually my least favorite event -because- when I compete I think of it as Performance, and I'm not down with the notion that my performance should be repeatedly broken-up when I'm required to pass the bag after a drop or bail and then wait for three other people to go before I can resume my performance. I like to have my turn - my entire turn - all in one go without rules regarding when I must pass and wait to resume. Well, I still like circle. Its not really my least favorite event. Its sort of in the middle.

Also, I like watching other people's performances. Every time I go to a big event, like Worlds, I always watch almost every routine, Open AND Intermediate. I like to see what kind of show each individual has planned. On the other hand, I get bored watching circle because it seems pretty random and un-show-y. I also often don't like to watch Big Three, because its often such a total drop-fest. One succesful combo somewhere in the middle of four or six other drops... its the worst. We should come up with some scoring system where-by ALL your combos can add to your score, rather than just your one best, so-as to encourage people to attempt combos that they're likely to actually hit (even if that means seeing less impressive combos -- IMO, the hardest combo that players can manage to hit in competion often looks kind of ugly despite being big and impressive because its often so hard that the competitor is just barely managing to squeeze it out with somewhat shaky form and a desperate hand-catch or some other sorry seal...)

Does the "crowd" (usually non-existent) understand the competition? In many years, I've seen far more players wowed by a regular shred circle, and I've seen many more spectators watch those same circles but walk away bored when the competition starts. How many players are there? How many of them compete? How many non-competing players just wish for the competition to be over so we can all get back to shredding?

I don't know, I've often found that its good MC-ing that draws a crowd to any type of public performance, and a lack of MC-ing that results in people stopping for a few seconds and then leaving.

However, I will concede your point about wishing for competition to end and just getting on with the casual shred. Personally, I liked your solution to that problem very very well indeed -- run very few (maybe just one) event, and make it run quick. That idea, I think, worked brilliantly. Just a couple months after the first Chilly Philly at the Levy Tennis Pavilion (you know, the one I won

) I went to another, similar event (I won't say which) and it was run as differently from your "fast-and-lean" philosophy as could be: one event after another... warm-up, go, and then wait around for a while till it's your turn in the next event, and endure a mandatory break for the official juggling/comedy half-time show, and then wait for your turn again, go, and wait around for your turn in the final event, and then wait for everybody else to finish up, and by that time you've been standing around or sitting around for so long that you no longer feel like shredding. Ugh. Between those two events, I learned a lesson I'll never forget. Thank you for providing the positive example of that lesson.

While we don't outlaw all course language we do ask for some level of respect between users and this post clearly oversteps that bound and has no other purpose than to disrespect another user and as such, despite is thin veil as general disrespect constitutes a needless and unacceptable personal attack.

Well said. Competition is the essence of sport. It doesn't matter how good you are in practice, it's how well you can perform under pressure that really counts. Competition is why I play sport. You spend 6 months training 5 days a week, you go to a 4 day event along with a bunch of guys you'll be friends with for the rest of your life and in those 4 days you record the best result your team has ever achieved. It didn't matter who was the most skilled and I don't even think we were the most skilled. It mattered who wanted it more, who worked the hardest, who was the closest team and who was the most prepared. The experience I'm talking about is probably the most important in my life. I draw on it for every serious event in my life. I have exams coming up (tomorrow) and I'm not going to be marked on how well I know the subject in general, I'm going to be marked on how well I can recall it during those 3 hours that I'm being tested. We had a crisis at work last week (and most weeks), and I'm not judged to be doing a good job based on my general ability to problem solve, I'm judged on how well I can solve the problem at the precise moment that it occurs.

Spending so much time and effort to be marked on such short period of time sounds unfair to some people, but it gives that event so much more meaning and significance then if you never had to deal with such pressure.

Albert Camus thinks that life would be meaningless if we were immortal. Well competition is that final moment that gives our "life" meaning. Without competition footbag definitely isn't a sport and it becomes mundane.
