No Shred30 at Worlds - Poll
Please vote in the poll. I will write more detail later, for now I want to know what the general opinion from players is.

The cancellation hasn't just been considered, apparently it's been confirmed. It's because a small number of people don't like shred 30 and want to replace it with another event called Short Technical Program, which is like a fusion between shred 30 and routines. Although STP has no official status, it's going to be run as an unofficial event at worlds instead of shred 30. This is despite two out of the 4 or 5 people who came up with concept claiming that it's "not replacing shred 30." It's obviously a little unclear what they mean by that.
I haven't voted in the poll because I'm not attending worlds and it doesn't really impact on me either way, but I do think it's a pretty terrible decision. At the very least there should have been greater community discussion before making such a decision. The only official events individual events in freestyle this year according to the worlds website are Sick 3 and Routines, however Sick 3 is not an official event with any status or rules according to the IFC, so there'll actually only be 1 official individual IFPA event for freestylers to compete in - routines.
Decisions like this really should be signed off by the WOC or possibly the Sanctioning Committee, but in this case the people involved decided not to make any such effort to involve the IFPA in the discussion.

I'm not voting. I won't be there, and I don't want to tell anybody who puts in the effort to make Worlds happen that they're doing something wrong. (At least, not over a little detail like this.) I'm looking at it the other way and thinking that I'm grateful that anybody is making the effort to host Worlds at all, because running any tournament is alot of effort and stress, and Worlds isn't just any tournament.
However, I did want to insert a little bit of perspective, some history, a suggestion perhaps...
I'm pretty sure that the first time there was a Shred contest at the World Championships was in 1999 in Chicago. As I recall, there was no official event; Ryan Mulroney simply walked around and asked all the shredders if they'd like to compete in a Shred contest, got permission to use the floor space and sound-system after the Quarter or Semi-Finals of routines were done one evening, collected 5 dollars from everybody who wanted in on it, and thus there was a Shred Contest. The whole thing was arranged and run in only about one hour. That evening a big bunch of people watched the video in one of the hotel rooms (the SoCal room, I think [Richie Abshire, Eric Windsor, Canyon Hart, etc. {a pretty fun room, IMO}]), and got all the numbers down, and then I heard that Mulroney got his father to do all the number cruching of the scores (his dad is, like, an engineer or something, and, I guess, brings a decent calculator with him when he travels...). I might be misremembering the details a little bit. Oh, and the Shred Contest back then was still 45 seconds, FYI.
So, for those who really want to do a shred contest at Worlds this year, you can always just make it happen... You'll have a whole week to find the time, and, in my opinion, only one round is really needed for a shred contest. There was only one round at Worlds '99.
Looking back now, it was pretty smart of Mulroney to put in that bit of effort to make the shred contest happen. It was simple to organize, and, no matter who entered, back then there were very few people (if anyone) who were likely to out-score him, so it was an easy way for him to make a little extra money while on vacation. It was almost like he looked around and saw a room with 40 shredders in it, and quickly thought of a way to convince half of them to each give him five dollars... (a very illustrious and honorable way to begin the tradition of having a Shred Contest at Worlds
) Again, if I recall correctly, most of those few who might have been able to beat him back then didn't even enter the contest. Names that jump to mind are Eric Wulff, Peter Irish, and Rippin' (Ahren German didn't come to Worlds that year). Then, as now, there was only one official event, and most of the top guys, the guys who had managed to move past the semi-final round, were probably saving their energy for the routine Finals. I think perhaps Daryl Genz or Dave Holton took second place in the Shred, but I'm not sure any more. I think that I did pretty well, over all...

we should simply rename shred 30 to add hunting 30, then nobody would think it`s a bad competition.
I'll be at worlds, and I think cancelling shred 30 is a good thing.
Shred 30 is boring to watch
Shred 30 is a bitch to count in a competition
Shred 30 is always argued over after competition
That's my toughts.

You do have valid point, and that's why this poll is not about getting rid of Shred30. It is about cancelling Shred30 at this year's Worlds, two months before the tournament, when some players have already spent time preparing, hoping for a chance to win a medal. Which I think is very unfair. This topic would never exist if that decision was made in a reasonable moment (i.e. last Worlds).
Basically, I'm not against the idea here, I'm against the procedure.

Your first point is subjective.acxel22 wrote:we should simply rename shred 30 to add hunting 30, then nobody would think it`s a bad competition.

Your second point is wrong. Damon and I have demonstrated that shred is scorable easilly, and in damn near real time. For $7500 I'll score it at your event.
Your third point is irrelevant. Ryan beat Scott and Vasek, we can argue over those results sometime.

I wrote pretty much the same thing in my first e-mail to Dexter, offering our help. His reply was that Shred30 is cancelled not because it's hard to judge, but because ADD system is imperfect.Iron Clad Ben wrote:Shred 30 is very labor-intensive to score. Especially for a large field of competitors. If the tournament organizers don't want to do it (and I can understand, putting on a large tournament especially worlds is plenty of work in itself), perhaps a group of players can volunteer to do it?

The add system is flawed, but I've never heard anyone talk of dropping routines because we don't have judges that are paying attention, and that are qualified to know what they are watching.
I'm pretty sure this is all part of a 12 year plan to get footbag into the olympics as a new ice skating discipline.

This might sound as defeatist but who cares? It's not like it's actually going to change the way footbag is played, or force players to stop playing now that Shred 30 isn't there.
Kudos to them for actually trying a change instead of bickering for ever over a forum and not doing anything. I'm sure once at Worlds people will whisper about it behind the organizers backs, or perhaps make some polite inquires, but then that'll be that.
Of course, I'm not going, but I wouldn't care even if I did. There's only about 5 people who should care, and that's the same 5ish or so people who consistently score over 200.
