Hey Ian,

have you scaled this down to see what it would look like at say an inch squared (or smaller)? I see footbag logos most of time on cards such as business cards or on event flyers. They're usually very small.

I like the first design better, and the only thing I would've changed would be some colors. At the moment, I think it's difficult to distinguish between "Ausfootbag" and the actual footbag hanging at it's end. The footbag is difficult to spot (if I hadn't played footbag, I would have thought the footbag was just an extension of whatever zips around the guy), so if I were you, I'd either define it a little bit more or just change it's color either to a different grade of blue or to a some other color.

I respect your work Ian, but the second one is just a poor outline of the original version imo.

Things closer to the viewer should have a bigger outline than things further away.

Yeah, I do enjoy the first design a lot better. I guess the black outlines are a bit too deep to accentuate the figure in the design. I also agree with Sergey that the 32 should look a bit more defined to show what it is, but I definitely believe that you should do whatever you can to keep the Australian flag. Try to make the bag and zipline into a more dark navy blue, as I think that's a bit more representative of the background color for the flag.

Oh, and I think it was mentioned that the shading on this logo could use some work, which I agree as well. Like, if the chiaroscuro blended together evenly without the sharp contrasts, it would definitely look better (and have the effect of a decent silhoulette).

Just a thought, but who is the inspiration for the figure on this logo?

As i was saying, the earlier posts were all saying to get away from detail and simplify it right down, with only 3-4 colours for ease of printing, and to make it less 'busy'. By making the black outlines have varying thickness, and trying to add shading back in to the image, wont i just be making it more 'busy' and too detailed again?
It is a logo after all, im not entering an art competition. Not that that i dont appreciate all your comments and expertise, but im not sure that people are going to be too bothered about whether it looks 3D or realistic or whatever, especially when its on a tiny letterhead or something.

The footbag perhaps still needs some work however, a little more definition would be good.

EDIT: The original image was a photo of Jeremy hitting a PS Whirl, its on Ausfootbag in the Photos section somewhere. Great shot.

Precisely what I think too. You need to be bale to take a glance at it and have some type of image imprinted in your memory. Personally I like the 32-panel but I think that's detail over-kill for a logo to be put on flyers / cards.

however it is relatively common to have logos of different quality / detail depending on what kind of support they are to be printed on (say cards as opposed to large banners)

i spoke of my prefered font in the aus forums, then i found this topic.

here are my views on the overall design [keeping in mind that i think you have done a great job on this and overall, i like the design] ...
[a] i agree with all of those people who express distaste for the thick black outline {UGLY} ... if i were you, i'd simply convert jeremy's silhouette to dark grey or black, thus simplifying even further and negating the need for an outline.
[b] i'd also give jeremy back some fingers ... not with shading, just silhouette the image fingers and all [otherwise it looks like he's wearing mittens

[c] you may hate me for this one, but i really liked the incorporation of the australian flag into the footbag and banner [very clever, attractive, and skillful ... and surprisingly for me, not cheesy].

hope this has been helpful and uncondescending ... i used to work as a graphic designer before moving into art/photography, and still work freelance as a graphic designer when i am not travelling.

i also have an account with one of australia's more affordable and available online print houses ... if you want their website, e-mail me and i'll send you a link. it would be easy for you to start an 'ausfootbag' account and request, pay for, and upload artwork online at VERY reasonable prices. they deal predominantly in full colour printing, so you wouldn't need to worry at all about minimising the amount of colours, and you can upload artwork as PDF.

As ive said a few times now though, REDUCING the level of detail was a priority. Adding fingers to the hands, when other people already suggested to take them away, will be the opposite of what im trying to achieve.
Also, as ive said already, its not an art competition. Its not supposed to be a realistic rendering of Jeremy. So its not like its Jeremy shredding with mittens on, its a stylised image of a footbagger used to create a distinctive logo which just happens to be based on a photo of a real person.

hey ian, i think you misunderstood me ...

i simply meant make jeremy a simple single colour silhouette with no outline or inner detail at all ... fingers would not require adding of any kind, just don't remove them from the silhouette.

i do like the removal of the peak of the cap though.

anyway, your call of course ... but i've got silhouette of myself shrunk down very small on my business cards, and the fine detailed edges of hands, shoe laces, etc, still look really great at such a small size.
