i like Cheetah because its got ginseng and royal jelly instead of caffeine or tauren. so its waaay healthier for you. pricey though, i'll prolly just take a couple pills of siberian ginseng and eat a steak like 30 minutes before i shred.

What's up with people talking about taurine being weird or bad? It's an organic acid (like an amino acid) that's in your body anyway. It prevents muscle fatigue, and it's added to many infant formulas for healthy development. If you're going to pretend to know what these ingredients are, at least look them up first.

It is kind of gross though, since it's mainly found in bile...

That said, I drink about 2 redbulls a day, and have for the last 5 years. I do go days (and even once a month) without any occasionally though.

If I'm having an awful day and if I'm not revved up for a footbag session, I occasionally pour a 5-hour energy shot (or a similar brand) with my Gatorade, and mix in water after a couple of gulps.

It works pretty well.

I think that's what they were specifically used for. When I was traveling around China in the summer of 2004, these types of drinks were the rage in most commercials commenting on hangovers.

The "Usual" ingredients that energy drinks contain.

-Taurine: In recent years, taurine has become a common ingredient in energy drinks. Taurine is often used in combination with performance enhancing substances, such as creatine and anabolic steroids, partly due to recent findings in mice that taurine alleviates muscle fatigue in strenuous workouts and raises exercise capacity.

-Ginseng: Usually ginseng is in subclinical doses and it does not have measurable medicinal effects. It can be found in cosmetic preparations as well, with similar lack of effect. Both American and Panax (Asian) ginseng roots are taken orally as adaptogens, aphrodisiacs, nourishing stimulants, and in the treatment of type II diabetes, including sexual dysfunction in men.

-Panax(Asian) Ginseng: One of P. ginseng's most common side-effects is the inability to sleep. Other side-effects can include nausea, diarrhea, euphoria, headaches, epistaxis, high blood pressure, low blood pressure, and mastalgia. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine Panax Ginseng promotes Yang energy, improves circulation, increases blood supply, revitalizes and aids recovery from weakness after illness, stimulates the body.

-Guarana:Also known as caffeine. From anecdotal evidence of excessive consumption of energy drinks, guarana may contribute (alone or in combination with caffeine and taurine) to onset of seizures in some people.

-L-Carnitine: L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid which plays a vital role in the metabolism of fat. Carnitine boosts energy by stimulating the body's burning of tryglycerides as fuel, and sparing the supply of glycogen stored in the liver for heavier exertion. During exercise, the body will burn fat at a rate of 75-80% of maximum exertion, thus less glycogen from carbohydrates is burned. L-carnitine allows the body to burn more fat, save more glycogen, and ultimately boost stamina and endurance. By providing more fat to the muscles, carnitine makes accessible an otherwise unavailable energy source.

-Inositol: Inositol is a type of sugar related to glucose. It occurs naturally in the body and is present in many foods. Inositol is a fundamental ingredient of cell membranes and is necessary for proper function of nerves, brain, and muscles in the body.

There are many other ingredients in energy drinks. This is what you usually find or see advertised on T.V.

Don't take it.
Words to live by: Don't put things into your body that you don't know anything about.

From reading your post and guessing at your level of knowledge in this area I would advise you to read, read, and read some more about creatine, protein, working out ect.

A couple of points;

The main things in energy drinks that have an effect are sugar and caffeine. Sugar is basically energy, and is processed very quickly (hence sugar rushes). The other ingredients may have some impact, but it's not as significant.

Gatorade and other sports drinks do not help "quench thirst" and should not be drunk as replacements for water. When you exercise hard, drink a lot of water and sweat a lot you lose a lot of electrolytes. Gatorade is supposed to replace those electrolytes. Electrolytes are basically soluble ions, and so the level of concentration is very important. If you sweat a lot and drink a lot of water your concentration goes too low. If you just sweat a lot and drink Gatorade then you lose fluid but gain much more electrolytes, so the concentration goes way up. This can cause serious damage to your kidneys, as well as basically dehydrating you more (affecting your performance).

Yes, drink water and gatorade. Or water and eat something. It depends on how much you're sweating and for how long.

You lose electrolytes when you lose fluid. Sports drinks replenish the electrolytes and water replenishes the fluid. In the short term the fluid is far more important than the electrolytes though.

ok i thought so, i've been drinking water and gatorade, the gatorade comes in the middle of my 2-3 hour shred session. and after that long, my shirt is soaked with sweat, and i can't eat food and play (cramps). i usually eat before and after.

thanks for the clarification.
