Scored almost entirely by my beloved Johnny Greenwood, I must say that this movie is one of the best I've seen. I didn't watch the Oscars this year and had no idea it was received so well, but after I saw it I knew it must have got something. Daniel Day Lewis deservingly got Best Actor.

Best movie I have seen in a long time intense but funny in a dark way. Daniel Day Lewis is a brilliant actor.

I wasn't a big fan of the movie.
I do like the guy who played the priest though, who was in Little Miss Sunshine. I just watched the movie, "The Thief Lord" (it was okay -- a cute chidren's story movie) and the evil step-father (or whatever) looks exactly like an older version of this actor. I tried to look up on IMDB, but couldn't figure out a relation.
That's my story.

I really liked this movie, the only thing was, that I kept getting the feeling that it would have been better suited to television - don't get me wrong, I liked the cinematography and the score, which were very cinematic - I just thought there was so much going on in the narrative it might have been better served with more time to spend on the various elements of the story.

Agreed with Dyalan. Nowadays films tend to be so massively long that, although there may not be any boring scenes, I find it hard to digest them. And even if it was a very long film, you still can't get as deep into it than in a miniseries.

The directors and producers should relearn to make films that are film-length instead of trying to squeeze an "HBO quality series" into two and a half hours.

I don't think its just a problem with film-makers, its also a problem with tv producers. Eg. Lynch wanted Mullholland Drive to be a TV series but no one was interested.

There do seem to be quite a few really good long films around. I don't mind - I think with DVD there is the opportunity to make really turgid narratives that people can watch over and over.

But with There Will Be Blood I just felt that they could get so much out of it, it would kick arse on TV over a few seasons perhaps being even better than it was as a film - which was itself awesome.

I'm confused. I watched this the other night. Apart from the distinct lack of any large amount of blood (very disappointed) I really didn't get it at all. I didn't know what I had just watched. Obviously there must have been some underlying messages that went completely over my head because what I took from the movie was "wow, random".

I found out the other day that some dvd's have descriptive voice overs for blind people telling them what's going on.

Yeah so I watched this today. It's good and the performances were excellent, but I found it a little hard to interpret or relate to. I was particularly annoyed by the conflict between what is essentially the religious fundamentalist and the immoral atheist - I think that's a pretty meaningless statement, which a lot of people try to make. Given that the title was changed from "Oil" to a quote from the bible, I can't help feel that the director was trying to attack the extremes of religious opinion, and I don't think his argument relates to the real world at all.

Anyway still a really good movie that is worth watching.
