Thanks on the props and good luck :-)

Kicked last night, more of same as recent posts, so nothing much to report. One thing, swirls where I set, plant, jump and dex are much easier than set, no plant, no jump while dexing. And both have their place, but I want to be able to do both. Taking way too long to learn. But it's progressing and will come along soon enough. Otherwise, whateverrrrrrrr.

That's the case for many people, myself included. Just so you know, the jumping one is often referred to as "symple swirl" and the other is known just as regular swirl. Symple is like symposium, but for tricks that technically cannot be symposium.

I'm free from summer classes soon! When're ya available to shred?

Maybe I can round up another shredder or two for a session :P

Any chance of that footage surfacing? :D

Learning different styles of tricks is a good thing I hear! Last time we kicked your swirl looked good, how are your rev swirls?

Shredding, yeah Drew! This weekend is no good (drainage project) but portions of next weekend (July 4th weekend) and then again on weekend of July 19th) are both pretty good as of right now. If you can bring another shredder, even better!

I'm horrible, never captured that vid for you  I hate capturing vid, so after I went through it once to capture my stuff, I needed a break... and then I've taped over that tape since then (I often video, but never capture.. just watch myself on the TV to get pointers). But, when we shred next, I'll just capture both of us at same time (like I did for the "Pete and Bob" video recently) to make sure my laziness doesn't get the best of me!

Ken.. Symple.. Got it. I think I knew that somewhere in my mind, but it clicked now. Interestingly, symple swirl practice is helping regular swirl. I was trying symple dynos too, just for style difference.

Had a fun session last night. Was really easy on myself in terms of focusing on stuff that's hard to do for me. In other words, I just had fun and played strings, and didn't focus so much on learning last night. Sometimes you just need to NOT push yourself - it makes the frustration that comes with pushing on other nights easier to deal with. But I did do a lot of weak spins in my runs, and a lot of paradons on both sides. And I did one drill that I've found helpful: drifter > infinity repeat as many times as you can.. then on other side... and ripwalk > infinity repeat etc. And DLO > butterfly repeat as many times. On strong side, these drills are a piece of cake. But on weakside, this teaches mid run skills on these tricks.

S/w Vanguard HR lady the other day, and she indicated that her meeting with the hiring managers is today. She anticiapted that the meeting would result in her being able to get back to candidates letting them know "2nd interview" or "no thanks". Urgh. Very very very stressed about this next step. Really want this. Decided to have some wine last night because I was a mess. Feeling a little fat/guilty as a result (which is stupid, but I feel that way anyways). I guess the few thousand calories I burn this weekend during the drainage project will compensate. Fingers crossed about the Vanguard decision. Probable won't hear until next week, but possibly later today. Urgh.

Wife/kids are going to the shore tomorrow through Tuesday. I have to work on the yard drainage project, and I can't burn vacation days right now because I need to save them for possible job interviews. So I'm going to be really sad without them. I miss them horribly when I don't see them for even 1 day. I guess I can work in the yard for hours without guilt though, and I'll have a little freedom to let loose at night and sleep in.

edit: One of my employees just came in to tell me he was inspired by an initiative I've been working on for like 1.5 years. That was nice. It feels good to know you can inspire someone.

Urgh, somewhat tough weekend. No footbag because of drainage project. Here's how that project went:

Overview: Swail between my yard and Doug's yard is a swamp due to surface water and underground springs. Last year we had a similar problem in a different area - had a gravel field with drain pipes installed, it fixed that area. So we were to install a french drain trench (basically, gravel with a pipe) that runs the entire swampy area along our property line. While we were at it, we also tied in both of our sump pumps and gutters into the system. The entire thing then ties into a gulley where all the underground springs ultimately let out (the water just gets there inefficiently today, hence the swampiness).

- Get hammered Friday night with a couple buddies. Played washers and some cards etc. Went to bed way too late.
- Saturday morning up at 7 a.m. Feeling ROUGH.
- 7:30 a.m. 5 tons of gravel is delivered.
- 8 a.m. go with Sean to pickup trencher.
- 8:30 a.m. Sean operates trencher along the course that I've painted in lawn, and I hand dig out all areas where trencher can't reach.
- Note, it's already 85 degrees and 90% humidity
- 10 a.m. Sean goes to return trencher, and Doug (the neighbor who shares the property line that's being drained) and I continue working on trench project. I have him putting landscape fabric in place as needed while I make all the needed connections for the solid pipes from gutters / sump pumps (because these connections do not require gravel)
- 11 a.m. Sean returns with a Cushman utility vehicle. This thing was a LIFE SAVER. It has a loader bed on back and would hold about 8 wheel barrows worth of gravel at a time. So, we'd fill it up from the gravel pile, and Sean would pull up next to the trench. Doug would hold the fabric in place while I filled trench with gravel. Sean would inch ahead and we just moved down the line. I literally shovelled every last pound of 5 tons of gravel by myself by the time it was done.
- Note, at this point it is 95 degrees, blazing sun, 90% humidity.
- Note 2, I drank 15 bottles of water this day.
- 3 p.m. All gravel base, pipe, connections are complete. Doug and Sean work on some gravel covering where we're crossing Doug's driveway (need a lot of gravel over the pipe in that area so driving over won't crush it) and I rake the dirt back over the trench.
- Done by 4:30 p.m. Tired, real tired. Pretty much spend the rest of the night with water, orange juice, and a beer by my side at all times. Kids and wife are at the shore so I'm just a bum laying around.

Then on Sunday, I'm so beat, but I'm bored because no one's around, so I do more work. Just little stuff, but yard is done and in good shape, water issues are taken care of, and now I can enjoy rest of summer (yes, I know I always say "this is the last project this year", but this time I mean it)

edit: and while I'm at it, how bout some blog pics:

Mini session last night. I had to keep it short because Meg and the kids are returning from the shore today, and I wanted to: mow the lawn, pickup the house, hang the flat screen TV in the bedroom, other misc. tasks to surprise her when she gets back. But I played a little.

All the focus on finesse tricks is starting to pay off. Osis (after all these freaking years) is good on both sides, weakside drifter is nearly caught up to strong side, swirls are really coming along, dynos ever-improving etc. Nothing amazing last night, but once in awhile I'd just go for a flowy string and was able to go for 20+ contacts guiltless (albeit with a lot of bops allowed) at will. So that's good.

Played last night, same as recent practices. When I feel like doing strings, they're consistent and long. The stuff that's been strong-side-only is working its way into strings more often, and mostly with success. Hit strong side pixie swirl (which I think is harder than the butterfly swirl version) so that was cool. Otherwise, it's all consistency practice on concepts that aren't that great for me.

Kicking on Saturday with Brian I think. That will be fun. I think I'll video tape it and post another vid though my game hasn't progressed that much since last vid. Ah well, we'll see. I'll capture some Brian footage too because he's really good and you should all see his game.

Either tonight or Friday, I'm going to spend an entire practice on swirl, paradon (and similar.. barfly etc.), barrage, and dyno. If I had all of those like second nature it would add a lot to what I do.

Still nothing from Vanguard. I'm really stressed about it. To the point where it's affecting my mood and energy levels. I knew it would be a waiting game, but this is over 3 weeks. Big companies move slow.

Yo Bob!

Interested in shredding Sunday, early afternoon-ish?

Kind of short notice, but I figure it's worth a try. Let me know through PM or blog or call me if you get the chance!

Nice long weekend.

Friday, took the kids to the pool with wife and grammy. It was sort of overcast out so we had the whole place to ourselves which was great.

Friday night, I built a wall in the barn (basically I just did some studs, and did plastic overtop) and installed an air conditioner. So now my shred platform is nice and cool in terms of temerature and humidity. Finished that project on Saturday and shredded with Brian on Saturday night. We both shredded horribly, it was actually really funny. I don't know what happened, but we kept a good attitude about it. Literally in 2 hours of kicking, there wasn't even one string from either of us worth capturing. For me, I know why... I've been spending all this time on osis and swirl and other things that are either: not hardcore shred stuff (osis), or not solid yet. Meanwhile, I haven't been working on anything else that I do, so that was all less consistent. Still recovering from last weekend's projects too. But oh well. It was still plenty of fun and we hung out on the porch after and chilled out.

Sunday, birthday party for my god son. He was born on same day, 12 minutes apart, as my daughter. How nuts is that?

This coming weekend is my daughter's birthday party. We have family and friends coming into town for it, so it should be really fun. Hopefully the weather cooperates because our house is much more fun when everyone can be outside in the yard etc.

This week, I'm going to shred 3 times during the weekdays (instead of 2) because I won't be able to play this weekend. I think I'll actually do that for a couple weeks because I want to break through on some of these things I've been working on. Wouldn't mind losing another 5 pounds towards my 190 "stage 2" goal (currently holding steady at 200). So extra shredding will help that too. With the shred room ready, and projects completed, I can give a few weeks to myself.

played last night. AC in barn is awesome. 40 minutes spent on swirls and spins basically. Fun. Sore today.

Daughter, Emily, turns 1 years old today. And she just started walking a lot yesterday - was previously toddling a little bit, now she just stands up and walks everywhere. Just like that. Good timing. Risk of SIDS is almost zero as of 1st birthday party, so I consider this birthday a milestone more for the parents than anything. Big party with family and friends this weekend will be really fun, hoping for good weather.

Still nothing from Vanguard. Emailed nice note to HR lady.

bullSHIT!
yeah, I know. Total bullSHIT. Ah well, nothing to do but build up the determination and resolve to keep searching. Sigh. It's a tiring process.

Last night, thank god for footbag. Got home and could barely muster a smile at my kids. Was pretty down. Went out and shredded/practiced. Sweat a lot. Got really tired. Chased entire process with a few beers. By the time it was all said and done, I felt a lot better.

Tonight, thank god for footbag. Unluckily, work has been worse than usual today. Not worth going into, just know that it's basically like a Dilbert cartoon, or Office Space here on a daily basis. So, I'll go home and shred again and feel better.

Sorry about Vanguard. I hear you though about having footbag as an outlet. Whenever I'm down or angry, it's nice to have something healthy to pick up my spirits, as opposed to just going direct to the bottle. You always feel kind of like a loser if you do that.

Do you watch The Office? There are some good office pranks in there.

Sorry, Bob.

I know what it's like to feel stuck at a place like that. It isn't good for a person.

As trite as this sounds, something better will come along. You just might lose your mind a little bit in the mean time.

Thanks Ken/Nathan. Job searching definitely sucks. Sometimes I envy people that are content to be worker bees in the same position for 25 years in a row. The upside of ambition and ability is that you accomplish things and are paid well for doing so. The downside is that you get bored and frustrated more easily. Place that personality in a backwards company culture and it's a recipe for bad things.

I've reached out to my network big time, and am getting some good ideas back. I have two colleagues that are a few years older than me and therefore in VP positions at their companies. Two of them are interested in having me join their team. Issues are: 1 place would be lateral pay move at best. Other place would be big pay increase, but is a consulting company so I'd be in a pressure cooker in terms of number of hours worked, long commutes, occassional travel etc. Also have a guy I used to work with floating my resume up (again) in his company. I like his company, nice commute, opportunity to advance.. But his ability to push me as a candidate is limited because he's a techy (and techy's really only have 'pull' getting other techy's in, not business side people). A bunch of other such favors are out there too. Monster.com searching (and similar) is freaking worthless once you're past entry/mid level positions.

I definitely watch the Office. Hilarious. I'll see if I can try some of those pranks without being fired.

------
Kicked last night. Was fun again. Stress relieving again.

I swirled and swirled and swirled some more. Symple will be added to my game far before regular style. But both will be there ultimately because I practice both. Both are improving a lot - last night I realized my dex leg wasn't planting quickly enough on the symple style to allow me to really time my dex. Hit about 10 in a row (kicks in between) strong side and about 5 of 10 weakside after this discovery. Linked out of strong side a bunch of different ways.

Then I did spins, spins, spins. Spinning clipper > op clipper > spinning clipper > op clipper. Best take on this was about 5 spinning clippers completed on both sides. So I guess that's about 20 contacts or so of the drill (but the op clippers don't really count). My arms are nice and tight, axis is straight, set is straight, head and shoulders are whipping around. I think another few practices of that drill and I'll be in good shape to build more spinning tricks and links. I did do some runs and was able to spin comfortably on both sides into and out of more difficult tricks. So I'm pretty happy with that.

Then I did a bunch of reps of ripwalk > infinity > repeat. Goal is just to really get comfortable on both sides with "midrun" stepping sets (in my vids, you'll notice that 85% of stepping sets in a run are on my strong side.. but I hide it a little by starting runs with stepping sets on weakside). I found that a nice straight (vs. travelling left to right or right to left) set to butterfly right before the stepping set is the key to keeping balanced and being able to do the drill. I can consistently get about 6-10 ripwalks worth on either side doing this drill. Therefore, I started ramping it up a bit, like drifter > ripwalk > repeat. Or ducking clipper > ripwalk > repeat. Etc. A couple more practices of this and I'll switch to blur. and more stepping to stepping combos.

Atomic.. I'll be coming to get you soon.

What kind of consulting firm? I'm a Microsoft Dynamics consultant, and in my experience consulting is all that you wrote and more.

There's a big upside, though. 1: instead of being the guy slaving away within the confines of a system, you get to be the guy designing the system. 2: you work on a project for a client for X months, and then you move on to the next one.

edit: Consulting company is called Vynamic. Management consulting firm. In many cases, that may lead to project management on software installation types of projects. In others, process excellence initiatives where process change is the goal. In some cases, simply lending superstars to lead whatever change is ocurring.

My biggest issue with consulting (and some other lines of work) is that I really value work/life balance. I've almost never worked more than 40 hours in a week - people used to look down on me compared to colleagues that would work 50-60 hours per week. But at the end of the day, my work spoke for itself, and I'd be the one promoted. In a consulting environment though, it's tougher to stick to that ideal >> whether it's due to demanding deadlines, longer commutes to this season's clients, or whatever else, I know there would be many days where I don't see my kids at all (they go to bed at 7 p.m.). So, I'd be surprised if I go that route even though the work would be interesting and challenging. I can always make more money, but I can't always be home for dinner with my kids.
