OK, this is an "on the bright side" post.

edit: That's cool how a new page started when I decided to start a new outlook on my current situation. Fitting.

Had my daughter Emily's 1st birthday party this weekend. After all the work we've put into our house and yard, it's really a fun place to have a party. Kids were playing on a slip and slide in the yard, or on the jungle gym, parents were chilling on the porch having drinks etc. Food was good, cake was good. My best friend was in town, so when everyone finally bugged out, we sat up and chatted til 1 in the morning. My parents and grandmother were there, and lots of other people too. Kids were all well behaved and cute to watch play together. It was just an overall success.

This week, I'm going to kick 3 times during the weekdays again. Need to recover from way too much food/drink. But that will be fun.

I'm actually feeling a little sense of relief to be out of the job hunt momentarily. Though I'm bored as hell, and frustrated as hell, it's basically easy money right now. So, I'll slowly get back on the horse of searching for something better. And meanwhile, I'll enjoy leaving on time, eating lunches at home with my kids, and not really having much to worry about. Boredom is a killer for me, but I'll try to focus on these other positives.

For what it's worth, I'm going into my last year of college, and this weekend I had a long talk about future plans, goals, wishes etc. with a friend. This paragraph is a perfect narrative summary of my end of the conversation. It seems to me that it is much more difficult to find all of those things than it is to find a more satisfying job, and you have already found them. So in one sense, you're already way ahead of the game.

Plus, I'm sure you'll find more engaging work before you know it. Good things don't always come to those who wait, but they always come to those who keep working for them.

Matt, good point, and one that I should remember more. I've always said that "I work to live, not live to work" and really believe that's the way it should be. Good family, friends, and home is worth much more than temporarily shitty work situation. though I'd like work sitch to be good too! ha ha

Mini-session in barn last night. Sister in law and grammy and cousins were over for dinner so I had to keep it short. But it was good work out anyways. I so badly want to just shred rather than working on what I've been working on. But at the same time, I want those concepts better because it will make shredding more fun. So, I'm not losing my mind yet and will continue practicing (instead of shredding) for a little bit longer. If I start to go crazy, I'll shred for awhile.

I did switch it up a little and work on atomic a little last night. Was hitting strong side atomic mirage to start runs and in the middle of runs pretty nicely. And hit some good ones on weakside too. Otherwise, lots of swirls, dynos, spins.

I have a conversation with former colleague about that one job tonight. It takes me off of the marketing strategy path that I'm on, and puts me back closer to project management. But I'm not sure I care anymore. Once I'm into a good company, I'll make it whatever I want anyways (which is what I've always done).

My first golf lesson is at the end of this month.

Hey Max, Yeah, I'm really looking forward to the golf lesson. I remember reading that you recently had a fun day of golf with your friends. My interest in golf stems from:
- I love skill games (billiards, ping pong, darts, horse shoes, tennis, basketball even [if you consider the art of shooting a similar type of skill game] etc.). And I specifically love the process of trial/error where you learn how to correct form and systematically improve a skill.
- All the sports that I play are high impact (basketball, footbag mostly) and at some point I'll need a fall back sport that's less of a problem for knees and ankles (which crack and pop already at age 31)
- I love hiking and being outside. Golf courses are a great place to be outside and get a nice walk in.
- As opposed to other sports that you can take into your 40's/50's etc. (such as tennis.. which I'd also like to start playing again) you don't need two players of comparable skill to make it fun. I used to play a lot of tennis >> I'd either be way better than the other player, or way worse, depending on who I was playing with that day. So almost never was a game really competitive and fun. With golf, that's not an issue.
- edit: related to above bullet (two different skilled players can still have fun playing together).. With golf, I have a fighting chance of getting my wife interested in the game. She won't play any other games with me because it's just too frustrating that she can't pick up sports quickly enough to make them fun for us both (like she can't even throw a frisbee consistently.. god, I thought that was like a requirement to graduate high school or something). But golf, you're able to do together, and if you suck, it's no big deal because everyone sucks. And handicapping helps too if you get a little more serious. I just don't want to be 60 years old someday and feel guilty that I want to golf every weekend while my wife sits around at home. If we can both play, that would be a fun retirement activity.

So, yeah, I'm pumped about picking up golf after all these years of thinking about it.

------

Kicked last night. Same stuff basically, still seeing steady improvements on those things. Switched it up a bit with some stepping set > stepping set stuff. Like ripwalk > stepping butterfly > repeat (I think that was a drill someone recently proposed I should try). Overall, I think some newer things are coming along nicely, and some stuff I've been doing is getting more solid.

You make some good points!
I recently managed to get my g/f interested in the game and although she's just starting I'm confident we'll both be able to play a course shortly.

I've also play countless other sports in the past and I can say that golf really has some singular characteristics. First of all there are dozens of variants to the game: stroke play (traditional), match play (one on one), skins (wager on every hole), best ball (2 teams of 2), one club etc. If you have some friends that are into it it's a fantastic pass-time. From what experienced players tell me, it's a sport that you can enjoy for decades and keep learning for decades too :) Finally when compared with other sports the real challenges with golf are getting consistent and handling the mental game: it's hard staying concentrated for 4 straight hours!

I wish you the best of luck for your future golfing hobby and I hope you get your wife interested in it asap :D

Golf's a pretty fun game, played a good bit of it back in high school for a little while. It's always fun to just chill at a driving range or go to work on the holes.

Lately, I have been getting more and more interested in Disc Golf, aka Frisbee golf. Courses for it are less common, there's 2 in French Creek State Park and another in Philly, Fairmount Park, but it's really fun! Maybe check it out sometime

On another note, I believe you said you might be around this weekend, the 19th or 20th. If so I think I can manage to make it back to town if you want to get a session in on Sunday, 20th. I've been practicing alot lately, might have some new things up my sleeves, as I see you do too!

Let me know if you'll be around for shredding Sunday

yo drew, I'll PM you as well, but Sunday the 20th is good to go. I'd like to play at 2 p.m. if you can do that. My shred barn is air conditioned now (still hot because it's an old barn without insulation, but much better than before).

Thanks for the personal invite, but I can't make it. Travelling to tournies just doesn't happen for me anymore, and I have a big work weekend that weekend (plus my first golf lesson). Good luck though, I'm sure it will be great!

Got lots of fun coming up.

Shredding with Drew on 20th.

Golf lesson the following weekend.

Mother's b-day party and shred with Pittsburgh crew the following weekend.

Party at my house for some close friends the following weekend.

My birthday the following weekend.

Trip to my hometown in CT for vacation Labor day weekend.

Keegan's birthday party (3rd already!) end of September.

Emi's Christening and accompanying family party (sister will be in town from San Fran! she's the god mother) first weekend of November.

--------

Shredded last night. It's cool when you learn to listen to that inner mind or whatever it is, and play footbag according to what's going to keep it fun and motivating. Last night, planned to drill some more, and I decided to shred instead. And it's a good thing. Shred is hurt by drills initially. Once you get shred rhythm back, it's helped by the drills, but it takes a few practices for that to occur. I think I'll get a night time shred in again tonight and again tomorrow before Drew comes to play on Sunday. Stuff that was previously hard, or the highlight of a run for me, was more automatic. Like ripwalk > drifter > infinity > repeat. That used to be a showcase of "holy shit I can do a weakside drifter AND a weakside ripwalk". Ha ha. Pretty lame. But anyways, I can just do it now, so that's cool. Some run starters are now mid run too. That's cool too.

--------

Broke the 200 lbs barrier in my weigh in last night. And I broke it with a bang. 197 biatch. 190, here I come. 8)

---
edit: Btw, I found a video that Brian (the most local player that I meet up with) made of his game. He's better than what you see in this vid, but this is a pretty accurate representation. He's a little repetitive, but his form is generally good and he's very athletic. If he would learn what the concepts are called, I'd be able to teach him so much better, but he's not interested. In any case, enjoy:

I'm freaking impaired when it comes to loading vids.. I swear I captured sound, but it ain't here. So just play Picture of Nectar by Phish (that's what I was listenting to) and save your "it needs sound" comments please.

But all other comments are welcome.

Just a ok sesh, trying to get back into shredding instead of drilling.

(Pete, now you have two vids to watch at work)

Yay, the help menu is my best friend. I have sound again. It's just the session sound, but someday I'll learn to run a track behind it. My editing sucks, but that ain't the point anyways.

Anyhow, introducing Drew K. (duffelbag).

I played better today, the shred practice is helping. Some cool links in here, I think it's worth watching hopefully.

Comments/suggestions/challenges please.

yeah having two videos to watch at work will really break my heart :P

im just gonna throw out some of my observations/reactions. as always feel free to use or disregard any of them.

the video from 7-19:
dude! those mid string flyers are hein! blur>pixie rev. butterfly kick>butter looked perfect and rev. butterfly kick>DLO is wicked hard. believe me, i've tried (ha not that you dont know) nice stepping out of drifter. have you hit pdx dlo bsos yet? and try stepping ss dlo. cool stuff with drifter>dlo BS. you should try some toe drifters and shit to try to work more on downtime drifters, maybe work your way up to toe drifter>DLO>rpt. either way looked really good overall, lots of nice controlled long strings with good clean moves. ill.

i'll watch the other one in a bit to keep it all fresh in mah mind.

What's a guy gotta do to get some suggestions these days? :-) Would love some others too (everyone says they read this, don't be shy!).

---------

To Pete.. you're the man, I appreciate you watching and giving feedback. I don't get to tournies anymore so this forum is my only (errr) forum for tips etc.

Definitely have to work weakside pdx DLO, only hit it a few times, but then I've only tried it a few more times than that. I think triple dexes from stepping and pixie are an area that can emerge now (edit2: I think atomic dlo [etc.] isn't that far behind either.. that'd be cool). And I think cooler double dexes should be doable now too. Example, gave pixie swirl a few tries the other day and was damn close. Toe drifter on weakside is terribly hard for me. Watched it on vid and I think I see why. You're right, I should do that in combos as you suggested.

Watch the second vid, I think you'll really like some of the links, and some of the difficulty that's starting to come out. Beginning is flowy stuff as usual, but there's more shred later on.

edit: how do you like the style in general? I think I've cured my hunching problem for the most part. And I have really tried to develop a flowing, controlled, smooth style. Is it a fun style to watch? Any improvements I can work on? edit3: Dramatic weight loss is noticable to me when I watch my game now too... I'm much quicker and lighter on my feet I think. And that's a good thing

Thanks again Pete! Miss you schmiss you. (<<<< that's a DC quote)

oh shit son! that pixie rev. butterfly kick to ducking combo was absolutely ridiculous dude :!: the best part about it was how clean the ducking was. good dlo out of osis. just for variety you should try throwing more schmoes (steppin ss legover), and i bet you can hit schmoe>dimwalk>rpt no probalo. i fucking love your eggbeaters. you should hit them as often as possible. double butterflys look nice and clean. how about some torques?

heh heh the end is funny. its amazing how fast you can get good at a set once it clicks, eh?

drew- looks good man, its cool because you dont have the widest trick selection but you already have a style of your own. never has dyno>pickup looked so cool. judging by your runs it looks like you're doing a pretty good job of drilling your toe tiltless and shit. i dunno if you're even looking for any advice, and im hardly one to give it, but you could try doing more clipper-toe tiltless moves and maybe some other varied stuff that will smooth out your game that you could do, like ss butterflys, far osis, maybe near mirage from clipper, shit like that. sweet sole moves.

Bob: Thanks a ton for getting me in this, I really appreciate it! It was cool shredding and hanging out. I'll work on the things you suggested, and start back on those drills you gave me.

Yo Pete
Thanks for the tips! I'll work on what you suggested, this is the first vid I have of myself so now I can see what's really up with my game. I'll work on it. Thanks for the advice

I'm damn sore. Shredded hard by myself on Saturday, shredded even harder on Sunday with Drew. Back was sore by the end of that. Played last night, but went pretty light because I had no other choice.

But, I did work on some of the stuff Pete mentioned. Turns out I can hit stepping ss legover on both sides. Can hit stepping butterfly both sides too. No torques because I think working on them on Saturday is why my lower back might be sore. Hit my first ever weakside pdx DLO. I think that'll actually be easier than regular weakside DLO for some weird reason. Didn't get a chance to practice weakside toe drifter, but I know from past experience those are hard for me (not lifting my dex knee high enough is the issue). Barely got time to work a few triple dexes, and mostly only strongside. I think I have strong pixie DLO dialed pretty much, was hitting it in the middle of runs, but only out of easy stuff (pdx mirage) so far. No biggie, increasing the link difficulty is the easy part once you have the mid run rhythm. Did a bunch of weak gyro mirages too. Hmmm, I think that's about it. OK practice for really taking it easy.

edit: Oh yeah, weakside pixie ss DLO is hittable next practice (kind of a cheater triple for me b/c it avoids my weakside DLO, but whatever). I think strong pixie eggbeater is doable too. And either side pixie paradon could be hit. Stepping or blurry DLO using my strong DLO is also doable. Strong side stepping paradon could be hit with some attention. Maybe atomic DLO too. Lots of "DLO" in this post. I think it's the easiest double dex, so it makes sense that my triples would utilize it as a first step into new territory.
