Mostly just posting to let everybody know I made it home OK. USO was a lot of fun, but I sadly did not attain my goal of going dropless in competition. At least I'll get another chance in 2 weeks.
I took a bunch of youtube vids this weekend and had a lot of fun, so hopefully I'll get a nice write-up with vids on here soon.
Big thank you to Red for making USO happen, and great seeing everybody. More soon.

I was stoked to find that some of the USO vids YouTube rejected initially, they accepted my second time around. Encouraged by this development, I found some good runs from the past that had been rejected, and have uploaded those too. Here is one from the end of May, when scorpion's tail was juuuust starting to click for me:
US Open Write-up.
I know my write-ups are often exceedingly long, so this time I decided to write a short and a long version. If you want to read the long version, skip the short one to avoid spoilers. Short version: USO was a lot of fun. I didn't play much footbag all weekend, because I wanted to save my energy for routines. Unfortunately, I had one drop in each round, so that goal went unfulfilled. The one positive that came from only competing in routines, is that it freed me to judge circle and sick3. I think the biggest problem with USO was a lack of qualified judges, which sadly is a problem at most footbag tournaments. Circle semis and finals were the highlight of competition. Even though I didn't go dropless, my finals routine was probably the best I've done in competition: I dropped the first trick and then hit the rest almost perfectly. I got to see some old friends, and I got to know some new ones better. Big ups to Red for throwing a great tournament.
Friday: I went to work in the morning, which was pretty pointless because I couldn't stop thinking about USO. Took public transportation to the airport, and other than having a banana detonate in my bag, it was uneventful. I sat next to a fat guy on the 5.5 hour ride, and he smelled pretty bad. I made myself sleep as much as I could, because that was the only way to block out the smell. I also finished my book on the flight over: Dreams From My Father, by Barack Obama. I arrived at the airport and unexpectedly bumped into Flash on my way to the train. It was nice having company to talk to on the way to Pioneer Square. We didn't get into downtown early enough to justify trying to go to the registration party at Kenny's, so we decided to get a beer and food at a restaurant downtown. I really enjoyed catching up with Flash, and I knew it was a good idea/investment to get some food and carboload for the next day. Red picked us up from downtown and dropped us off at the hotel. Getting a super-enthusiastic hug from Age made me feel like I really arrived amongst friends, and at the same time I felt like I woke everybody up with my late arrival. Because I slept on the plane and I was running on East Coast time, I decided I'd drop by Red's house to be social and say hi to everybody. At Red's I went downstairs and watched Dave and Kemmer shred in a real tight space, and enjoyed some comic-book nerdy conversation with Red and Eric Chang. I didn't pay much attention to shred, but I did notice Dave hit montage to bedwetter, which is pretty cool. I snuck back into the hotel room and slept next to the very tall, very angular Rob Creel. I woke up a couple times when he elbowed me in the head, which was actually more funny than painful.
Saturday
Next morning we (Rory, Age, and Rob) all went downtown to score some breakfast before comp. We picked some Greek Diner, on the strength of its menu and prices, but mostly because there was a giant purple octopus hovering over the entrance. Our waiter was funny and also wore a purple octopus on his head, but he was also really slow and inattentive. The food was underwhelming for the price, but I judge food at tournies more for its nutritional value than for its flavor, so I was satisfied. At breakfast Rob revealed that his routine music was "Around the World"

i know what you're saying about the judging ken, i don't feel i should of judged any of them events. I can call combos on the fly, but i don't really know if i understand how hard it is to link them. i really only judged on what i thought was really interesting (flashs sick 3 was my favorite) and flowed the best.

I'll disagree with Ken here. I don't think that having gone dropless or won championships let alone being in BAP should be a pre-requisite to being a judge.
However I do agree that we need more competent judges. By "competent" I'm thinking about people that have judged major events before (even in intermediate events) and that have followed a judge's workshop held by more senior players that are experienced judges.
Hitting a dropless routine will not automatically make you a great judge. Likewise a good judge (say Steve) probably won't make into BAP either.
Max: while you may still disagree with me, please re-read my statement. I wasn't saying that routine judges needed to be BAP. I was saying that for technical events, judges need to be at a certain high level. Separate from that, but in a similar vein, I feel that routine judges should have a certain level of experience as well. I was NOT saying that judges for either event need to be both good competitors and in BAP. So your example of Steve does not change my original statement (but you know, I do question the ability of people like Steve to judge modern routines, since the difficulty of routines has changed so radically since the days when they themselves competed).
I also want to stress that this problem is not unique to USO and that it's a challenge at most footbag tournaments. Given that I only competed in 2 subjective events at USO (routines and sick trick), and my goals were not related to the judge's outcomes (going dropless and hitting a trick with a dirty name), I was probably the least affected at the tourney. That said, finding competent judges should be a top priority for any tournament organizer.

Yeah, these blue and white G-Units are taking some time to adjust to. I'm not used to having multiple colors on my feet, and I find it a bit distracting. They also feel kinda chunky since they're still breaking in. My current black ones are actually still fine, but I figure it wouldn't hurt to start breaking in the new pair.
After USO I told myself I'd take a few days off from footbag, but I got bored and decided to have a few informal light sessions in baggy clothes and new shoes. I'm not going to sweat my routine too much before NYC. I've put in the time, and I feel like I'm due. I just need to stay in shape and not get injured in the next week. Should be doable.
