whattttuuuuppppp!!!! hey guys it looks like a lot has been going on since ive been gone (took a trip to the austrian alps all this week wo internet) looks like that roller derby went great! so glad that dave finally made it out to kick, too. i didn't get to kick as much as id hoped, being that it rained the whole time and i was so sore from hiking everyday i didnt really have the energy, but i did practice some legover shit. ive at least executed although not consistently all 12 basic toe legovers, didnt really work on clippers or butterflies much, but im definitely continuing to get better. most of my trouble lies with doing consecutive ones, that is the stall itself is pretty natural now, its just a matter of setting the next one from the opposite leg. for some reason the german footbagger zulu that i got in contact hasnt responded to the last message i sent right before i left, hopefully ill still get to kick with him at some point. ive been having a great time here in germ germ sounds like the burgh buirghs been a blast as well. looking forward to seeing yinz in august.
oh yeah i got some pictures in case neones interested

yacob, what are chances of airport pickup as seen on previous page of this blog? Once I know I'll look at plane tix and confirm times etc.

Also, I imagine that a Friday shred would work best for all of you if it happened after normal working hours (say, after 5 p.m.). Is that right? If yes, will attempt to plan arrival accordingly.

Maybe easiest to discuss over phone. Yacob, PM me your phone number and I'll call you tonight

OK, I decided to drive instead of fly. Cost is about equal either way (since my flight would be free on flyer miles) and convenience of having my vehicle trumps ability to sleep on germ tube (aka plane).

So, I really just need to know if Friday session is possible, and what time you'd have in mind. And then figure out hang out / crash space etc. (staying at matt's would be sweet as mentioned previously)

Bob! Hell yeah man! I'd've totally picked you up btw, but either way I'm psyched you're coming to town. I'll certainly be writing that session in on the calendar. Hellz yea

And, if anyone's interested I made a slightly better (imo) video of our roller derby performance using the sound from ian's video and the video from mine. There were some random lapses in my video that translate to random bits of black screen in a couple sections, but yeah...check it out if you like:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=G9omTUZbOOI

Oh, and update on any videos that i may or may not be making: Since the footage I have is pretty lame and out of date compared to what Ian and Matt have recently released, I'm just gonna bag it..

And Matt...I'm still pumped about your video idea, let's definitely pick a date and get some good shred in at some good Pittsburgh spots.

I dunno. Right before I left for Europe I was busting much harder. Since then I have been all about refining moves and not stringing quite so much.

So, here is a video I made of myself from that footage I gave you, Jake, because I have not represented myself at all recently and I really want to share how hard I have been pushing my game.

watup dowgs looks like u guys are still shredding up a storm in pgh. btw that was a sick vid ian, i dont know why but i really like ur style. its much more fluid and dancelike rather than robotic unlike a lot of other footbaggers', which may or may not be a good thing but neway i think its way more aesthetically pleasing :)
i just got done doing some serious kicking and im happy to say that my mirages, around the worlds, and clippers are looking excellent! i kind of gave all my butterfly practice a rest but now im great at clippers on both sides and i did at least 15 prolly more like 20 consecutive ones on each foot and at least 10 back and forth today which is definitely a record for me. my sister brought a vid cam and i think i might be able to record something and post it just to see if u guys have any comments about my form or whatever. im having major trouble with a particular kind of legover. i dont know the name but lets see its the kind where if u set it from your right toe, you go over it with your left leg starting from inside the bag and then around it to the outside. get it? well neway im having trouble doing all 4 of those types of legovers, not the around the world ones, just the ones set from the opposite toe. just to clarify the 4 are:
right toe set>around with left leg from inside to outside of bag>left toe stall
right toe set>around with left leg from inside to outside of bag>right toe stall
left toe set>around with right leg from inside to outside of bag>right toe stall
left toe set>around with right leg from inside to outside of bag>left toe stall
okay that was a little unnessicary but i think u understand now. to help my clippers i watched this david clavens tutorial on youtube and just kind of studied his form which helped immensely not to mention it was just a really good tutorial in general, but i couldn't really find anything like that to help with those particular legovers. any advice about setting placement, which direction to hop in, or timing would be great. btw ill get those pictures from the alps up soon im just lazy and havent put any from the camera onto my comp yet. u wont be dissapointed.

Hey Nils,
First of all, props. Consecutive clippers are so important, and that video is better than any other single source available. He has on drifters as well, but I think that you should wait on that one for a minute.

The first trick you described, I believe, is called a pickup. The other one, where you dex o-i with the opposite leg and finish on the original setting toe is called a mirage. I am glad to hear that you are practicing all of these. When you get back, I will school these with you. I learned them all in the 90's, but I would like to be consecutively hitting them in a range of 90's today.

Advice off of the top of my head for pickups:
You really want to break this trick up in a string of specific operations.
The original set can not be too low, and it really can't be too high.
The reason it can't be too low is because between it going up and down, your foot has to make a very deliberate, an not initially natural motion.
you want to set the bag not much higher than waist-height (imo), and not much lower. You also want to set the bag extremely close into your body, as it will give you more pivotal-mobility at your knee, thus enabling a smooth, conical progression around the bag.
So:
Set.
Plant that leg while preparing to put the dexing leg's knee roughly where the last one was at its peak.
Now make that conical motion while being mindful of stalling the trick afterwards, and rushing into the next trick.
There are a lot of way to tighten this up, but see if this works and even if it does we'll work on this.

The best thing about this trick is that it will encourage you to keep you game close in. That is an invaluable lesson to learn early on.

Mirage:
Set close in, and straight up. About waist height.
hop a bit with your other leg as. This will speed up the dropping and settling of the setting foot. Carrying this mimentum from the hop you should easilly get that dexing leg in front of your setting leg.

Now, in one motion, you will hop off of the original setting foot with the intention of throwing your dexing leg past the bag, and allowing to to grab it in your cross-hairs for a catch.

Set close in, waist-height.
Hop to the cranking of the dex leg while footing the original setting foot
Throw yourself over and catch.

I hope this helps

Today:
Kicked with Jake, Matt, Chrissy (Pips), Josh (Tripp), and Jeff (Josh's cousin)

Chrissy: Great crank. Infinite potential. I can't wait till she is busting out drifters.
Matt: WTF
Jake: His spins were really great today.
Josh: WTF. Alright, I'll expand. Symposium twirls. Kicked symposium bubba barfly twice. Linked out of symposium bubba butterfly. Just a lot of massive moves. Phasing butterfly swirl. Frantic mirage. Extremely close to pixie armageddon his first try. Blaze bsos, first try. Whirrs. Holy cow!
Jeff: He has a clear idea of how to do most of the foundation, tiltless moves and butterflies. With some practice he will have a solid foundation.

I am hoping that we all get to kick together more often. Today was a lot of fun.

Oh yeah, me:
I may have hit symposium twirl but more importantly I know what I need to do and that I can. Same with barfly.
A couple good strings. My left need hindered me a bit, but it was a good session.

Edit: I forgot that my quantum sets were particularly good, although still leggy today.

Also, I drank a gallon of water today, and I feel really good right now. I think I will do this more often.

Goals:
I want paradox torque. I can toe it consistently out of paradon, so I might as well just make it happen. No more excuses.

I want to get symposium twirl on both sides. It is a little bit of a push for me, as it demands that I exert sudden jolts of more-than-a-casual-amount of energy, but I think it is completely doable, feels fairly natural, and will make my standard of living better.

Barfly will be mine. It just cant be that difficult. Tripp was able to help with the follow-up questions I had from hearing DC explain this move to slapdash at the last NYFA jam. I can almost feel this move in head.

So, these are the moves that I want to own. And I know I can do it.

Those pictures are beautiful! I can't wait till next summer- I am going to try my hardest to vacation there and elsewhere.

Regarding pickup:
There are two distinct parts.

1) You have to set the bag and quickly position the dexing leg so that your window is directly on the other side of it while the bag is at its peak.

2) This is when you initiate the dex, and come around and then down under the bag, match the speed, and catch it.

The first portion should feel like a crunch or sit-up. It involves a quick plant of one foot, followed by an immediate, lifting of one side knee towards the upper portion of the other side, and then cocking it there. Do not forget to bend at your hips. They are the key to footbag agility.

Edit: The second portion is a quasi natural feeling motion, but it can be learned and controlled. You can make an i-o motion (the conical pivot using your knee- remember to do this naturally, and smoothly or it will be a problem now and later) and guide your leg back to its original side using your hip.

Hips are important for footbag. While legs are critical for flagging points dexterity adds, and carving space in general, hips and knees are crucial for your form.

Knees are the most delicate and complicated, thus harder to replace. Hips are closer to your body and an analogy can be drawn between foundation in a building and the foundation of each limb. Anything beyond that portion is fucked without it.

Remember, stretching is now officially an important part of your game.

Great day. I have finally patched things up with one of my closest friends after three or four years. This means a lot to me.

Kicked with Matt:
Matt and I both schooled spins. He is getting them faster than me. They are almost there. I had some good ones.

Matt:
Fairy ss dol at the end of a string with skullsmaher and some other alpine move

Me:
Paradox torque on both sides a couple times each
Bunch of swirls with support leg sets
Left knee is feeling a little bit better

Hey guys. It was awesome kicking with you guys yesterday. Sorry I had to cut it short all of the sudden. I will definitely work on those drifters and come around more often while I'm up there. Nice meeting all of you!

Hey Pips, definitely come around whenever you want. It was tons of fun kicking with you.

Same goes to Tripp if you're sneaking around reading this.

Saturday was a good day for footbag in Pittsburgh. Lots of shred, lots of cool people. Totally a scene, haha.

Nils, those photos are unbelievable. Every single one could be framed and hung on someone's wall.

yoyo word up from germany. after heeding ur advice im getting much better at mirages but my pickups are still pretty weak. actually they're horrible. i can pull them off 1 out of like 5 or 10 times i try but it never feels as natural as the mirages which i developed a nice little hop skip n' a jump for. clippers are also continuing to get better except that last couple sessions i didn't pull of nearly as many as i did a few days ago when i was stringing like 15 or 20 together. i think it might have to do with being really sore and getting lazy/ off balance after the first 5 or so. it seems as though when i do a lot in a row my first few sets are great and then i have to keep hopping around more to get under the bag. its probably just something i need to practice more until it becomes natural for me to set it straight up every time. in any case i really appreciate ur help a lot and ill work on those pickups but i might just wait till u can guide me through it when i get back (in just 2 weeks!) because right now they are total shit.

Yo man, I'll be honest, I didn't read all of Ian's advice, so I may repeat something...

Pickups were definitely a bit trickier for me to learn than both legovers and mirages. Even still they are slightly less comfortable, and I think it's just becuase it's a more unusual motion.

I try to use my hips as much as I can for pickups. Do a set that is as close in to your body as possible. Do it closer than you want because you'll always think it's getting closer to you than it really is. So, set close to your body, and once the bag gets about waist high, give a little push with the support leg and start the dexterity with the hip of your dexing leg. Keep the knee of your dexing leg bent in the same position the entire time and let your hip guide your leg over the bag. That's the whole trick, that one little hip movement. As soon as you have the bag cleared, it's just straight down to a toe stall.

I would say to try to concentrate on keeping your dexing foot ready for the stall the entire time, as well as keeping the knee of your dexing leg locked in one position for the entire time. Close in to the body and use the hip to get up and around the bag, then straight down. I think lots of people learn the dex, but just get too nervous to land the stall. Once the dex is done, concetrate on using that support leg to cushion the stall and calming down your dexing leg so that it isn't shaking around and throwing the bag off your toe.

Hahaha, if any of that advice sounds crazy, or unhelpful, disregard it. I've never tried to explain how to do tricks to people before, so I may have just wrote a bunch of garbage. Hope some of it helps!

hey thx matt i think u might have actually hit the nail on the head as far as my pickup troubles go. im too beat to kick again tonight but when i picture myself doing them i think im trying to unbend my knee too early instead of keeping it in the same position the whole time during the actual dex part like u said. the stall itself is also a problem with that trick, i feel like im too focused on coming down softly with the bag rather than just getting my foot in the right place for it to land squarely. and the fact that my right>left foot pickups are much more difficult than my left>rights leads me to believe that its somewhat of a one-sidedness problem as well because i played hackey sack for many years only attempting anything remotely difficult with my right foot. the good news on that front is that ive been working reeeeaaaaally hard at practicing everything equally for the last few weeks since i started playing footbag and already i feel like ive eliminated all traces of my one-sidedness in my cross game, that is my clippers and anything else having to do with inside stalls are comfortable with both legs. so yeah i think tomorrow im not hiking or biking anywhere so ill have time for a nice long sesh and give particular attention to my toe game then filll u in on any progress. in general though im not going to be kicking as much as i have been because my friend matt has joined me on this great vacation which is needless to say, just a dream! but... he doesnt kick. at all. so i dont want to just leave him hangin to go kick for a cpl hours everyday like i have been. will be doing mad other fun stuff to make up for it though, such as actually going out and partying which for some reason i havent had much interest in doing yet.

Sweet, thanks for the invites, fellas.

Matt - keep listening to good music. and keep up with the good guiltless runs.
Ian - great both sidedness. I want to see Swivel both sides soon enough
Chrissy - As said before, awesome crank. Makes me jealous. Get those drifters down asap.

Bob, you gonna be in Picksburgh still, the day after Aug. 2nd? I'm going to a concert in Burgettstown on the 2nd and am wanting to possibly kick the day after.
Josh Gayhart ... keeping footbag tuff since 2002.

whatup yinz!
Im having a grand ol time over here. today i visited these historically accurately reconstructed roman ruins with this crazy museum full of all these old roman tools and their moderm day equivalents and i was so suprised at how advanced some of their technology was over 2000 years ago. It sucked because forgot to bring a camera but trust me if u ever get the chance to see somehting like that u really should. my mom pointed out how excited some people get when they go to visit fort pitt or other historical sites in america that are like 200 years old! big whoop all this shit in europes been around since before the age of christianity. nuts.
neway first thing i wanted to ask u about is whether dave, tyler, josiah, or anyone else i introduced you to came out to kick ever again? if not, please call their asses up and make them come kick! in general ive been thinking about how pghs footbag scene could be so much more than it is right now if we made more effort to pull some potential footbaggers into the black hole of steel city freestyle. personally, i give footbag *five gunshots* five stars! *blows out smoke* yeah, its awesome and i think once people get past that first steep hill on the learning curve then itll be a lot more enjoyable for them. for instance, josiah is really good at hacking but his left side is balls and without some guidance and a little determination hes just going to continue to use his right foot all the time because its convienient and never reach the next level of his game. just something to think about.
about my progress: even after a lot of practice and paying close attention to form my pickups are still garbage. oh well. maybe its just something ill have to practice with u guys around. i also practiced the triforce drill i read about somewhere and got up to like at most 3 or 4 before i dropped but my clipper sets are definitely getting way more accurate and i can feel it coming up much smoother and without spinning more than ever. anyway thx for all yall help talk to u again soon
