It's alright, Nils, my pickups are garbage too. We'll be practicing tiltless together. I'm glad to back and have someone to school foundations with. Jumping back into footbag after years off made me jump after guiltless without dusting my two-adds off.

Pickups are just as lot harder for me that a lot of 3 add moves.

I kicked once with Jake, Matt, Tyler and Dave. We all had a good time. I have been swamped with my new job recently though. And now I am gearing up to go away this weekend. Hopefully next week we can all get together for a session or two.

In other news: I just built a contact mic! Whoo-hoo! Getting my learn on!

Front page of the website. Hahahahahahahaha. The same picture and little blurb are apparently somewhere in the actual paper this morning as well.

Some guy was taking pictures of me while I was drilling sumos yesterday. When I noticed I gave him a, "Hey weirdy, what are you doing?" look, and then he came over and asked me some questions. He also asked some questions to the people sitting on benches watching me, but apparently none of that proved interesting enough.

After that he got down on the pavement like two feet from me and was all, "Okay do some more!" I was afraid of kicking him in the head, so I worked out a deal that I would count to three and do 1 trick that he could snap photos of. This resulted in me doing about ten flails in that manner until he got a picture that satisfied him.

Pretty cool. Not to make the least bit fun or anything, because, seriously, who knows anything about footbag anyways, but that little blurb is hilarious. My brother saw it on the website and called me this morning before work to read it and laugh hysterically.

Hey everyone, check out me and my handmade bean ball! I can do various moves, like this one where I kick the ball UP!!!! Okay, enough teasing. The reporter guy was really nice, and it's really cool to have some footbag on the front page of the website. Too bad it wasn't two weeks ago, or I could have got him to promote our performances.

I'm definitely getting stoked for the NYFA thing this weekend. Maybe if you all play your cards right I'll teach you how to do the trick where I kick the ball up.

EDIT: Okay, the online site took out my favorite part. This morning it did say that I can do various moves such as "kick the ball up," but it appears that someone realized it sounded goofy and took it out. The actual paper still says it though.

Matt, you're the man. Way to get SCF a shoutout in the caption too!

And you really do have Friendship Park street cred. Like everyone I know tells me they see you there, always with a smile on their face. Keep on kickin' ass.

NYC this weekend!

Just came back from NYFA tournament #3

Hightlights:
Kicking in the same circle as Bruce, Dan Kramer, and Ken Somolinos
Judging several competitions and blocking drunk women (being useful)
Purchasing 3 new bags off of Dufflebag
Listening to the great things people had to say about SCF members
Hitting reverse mullet and atomic dyno first tries
Watching Matt hit alpine witch doctor
Matt Cross is funny
Kicking with Dan Kramer
Making great timing each way without any written directions
Watching Jake compete
Running into my old friend Vincent, the bartender at Josie Woods
Receiving swirl advice from John Schneider
Eating shawarmas with Matt on Macdougal street
Meeting my little sister's boyfriend
Eating curry worst at Hallo Berlin
Catching up with my old college buddy Mike B. after at least 6 years
Watching Jorden. He made the event for the public. He worked very hard to make this event and NYFA's effort that much more successful

Most importantly: Watching one of my favorite people play harder than I have ever seen them play before, all day, winning three out of four of their competitions and accomplishing something they have wanted for a very long time.

I'm glad that I went.

The NYFA symposium was fun.

I hadn't seen any of Jorden's hands and feet juggling performances before; I enjoyed his demo of it a lot. I really liked the way he showed the audience exactly how the stalls and dexes worked before executing them too.

Everybody's reaction to Ken's dropless routine was even more fun to watch than the routine itself. It was definitely your weekend, Ken. On the drive home Ian, Jake and I were laughing about the maniacle look you had on your face after finishing the two bag juggling, when you tossed the second bag a million feet in the air.

We also had fun trying to remember all the ridiculous quips Matt Cross had as mc:

"Footbag is all about core strength, and you know what that means ladies!"
"In case you're wondering, the trick to footbag is glue, magnets and amphetemines."
Announcing Rippin' Run competitors: "Jorden, "the destroyer," Moir....and Jake, "the destroyer," Milofsky.
And, my personal favorite, "Would somebody just fucking get her out of here!" (at the crazy lady)

It's definitely fun to be able to play for so long (fun....and very very exhausting) with all sorts of different folks.

Two new tricks in New York: alpine witchdoctor and pixie massacre (even though it was hit twice on total luck and will take lots of schooling to actually get)

I'm a fan of the New York Jams.

Bruce Dole is an awesome and hospitable host and I'm beginning to enjoy my little corner of his apartment right next to his bench press machine. It's becoming a trend for me to not crash there the second night, but I enjoy that too, ha.

Experiencing New York for the first time vicariously through Matt was cool. I'm glad we took Broadway all the way south through Manhattan on Friday night even though it was midnight and I'd already driven 6 hours, cause cruising through times square was off the hizz and Ian is one hell of a tour guide.

Driving in New York is fun. I was intimidated at first, but then I realized that really you can just do whatever you want, all while swerving around, swearing and giving people dirty looks. It's great.

As a professional land manager who works primarily in urban park settings, I feel especially qualified to state that Central Park is off the fucking hook. Holy shit I love that place. Props to Barrett for having the jam there, even if we could only have music for a random ass block of time.
And on that note, given that the time for music was limited I thought the tournament organizers did a really good job of thinking quickly and re arranging competition according to what needed music the most. Props to those cats; Vince, Steve G, Barrett, and anyone I'm missing.

Matt Cross is a natural MC. To add to Matt Beall's list above:

"If you need a footbag stalled on a sole, or something lifted, talk to Bruce Dole"

Thanks to Steve Goldberg for re-educating me about how to judge a routine. I've been out of the loop on that kind of stuff for awhile, so it was good to have a mainline directly into the worldwide footbag brain.

I was happy with my string against Jorden in Rippin Run. He won of course, but at least I didn't drop on a lame string.

Thanks to Josh Penney for giving me a pep talk about the importance of just having fun in competition. I was all concerned that I hadn't been playing alot and I was gonna suck, but what he said cleared my head a little bit for circle competition and allowed me to play fairly well. I had at least one good string that earned me an applause. That felt good, more cause it signified that I had accomplished a mental goal than because people were digging my shred, but that's nice too. Ian gave me a good piece of advice too: "Do this one for the ladies", in recognition of the fact that I always play better at home when a cute girl is walking by. Though that's probably universal. Either way, it helped too, cause there were certainly ladies in the park that day.

I really don't like my quantum 2s. I just feel goofy and self conscious when I wear them. I used to feel so slick when I was wearing my lavers, and I think it affected my game in a good way. Now I just have to kind of ignore my shoes and think about other things. I keep thinking I'll get used to them as they break in, we'll see. Don't be surprised though if I've got a new pair of lavers soon.

Brooklyn is cool. Sure it's full of hipsters, but hipsters are kind of fun to look at.

Ken Somolinos is good at footbag and alot of fun to watch. Way to kick ass Ken.

Yeah, I'm a fan of the New York jams

After cringing in fear throughout your routine I made a point of not letting her get in the way of the rest of the performance.

yoyoyo watup pbuuuuurgh steel city represent looks like u guys had a blast from the past in nyc! wish i couldve been there
i just had my first session in... a long time maybe 2 whole damn weeks or something, definitely the longest ive gone without footbag since i started. it was.... not great. also not bad so whatever. reason for not playing in so long is that my friend matt joined me while ago here in europe and he doesnt kick so didnt get an opportunity, also we went to amsterdam and i decided against bringing my gs and trying to kick there. in case u were wondering, yes amserdam is amazing, and even more rediculous than ud probably think. yet another reason for my kicking slump is that i lost my bag (that one with the aquarium pebbles that i grew to love so much), and that was such a bitch. had to go to mainz looking for hackey sacks and the only ones i found were really shitty actual wham-o hackey sacks at a brand name department store. wierd. so anyway i picked up the smallest 2 that they had and went to Frank's Gun Shop to get some steel bbs. constructed a wierd little bag with a mix of bbs and plastic beads, so yeah it kinda sucks and seems to roll off of my foot every other stall unless i concentrate REEEAAALLLY hard and freeze everything. so yeah that was lame but at least i still did a few consecutive clippers, my pickups still suck but somehow it looks like that if i had my old bag then almost half of them would be stalling or something? basically i feel like ive gotten worse but only because of this damn hackey sack im working with. probably shouldve drilled some basics like mad stalls over and over to get used to it but i was kind of discouraged by he fact that i couldnt even hit my mirages which were looking really good a couple weeks ago. oh well. maybe i was being too ambitious anyway. i think this shitty hack could be a blessing in disguise, itll force me to straight up school those basic basics with an unbelievable difficult bag. itll be like weight training or something.
btw, do u know if anyone recorded jake's run at that tournament? and if so where would i check that out?

I'll second those questions. I'd like to see those runs too. There was one guy filming pretty much the whole time, I think he was affiliated with Barrett somehow, so maybe those guys are gonna put something together.

Hi. Real fast 'cause I'm at work.

Good.

Shitty bags have a purpose. I reccommend Consecutive toe stalls. Great idea. sets of 10, 20, etc. See if you can hit 100. Then do it with insides. This wil get in great shape. Then do the same with clippers. Then being the operative word. While clippers are far more common and easier, insides require stretching, strength, flexibility and patience. These are massively important.

Then: consecutive mirages. Concentrate on your weekside. Start a session by trying to do as many mirages on your good side as you can. Then switch sides and try to double your best number. It will make you realize that muscle memory 'aint shit until you have the steps loaded mentally in your ram, and you are familiar and have fine-tuned the motion.

Remember: You don't have muscle memory until after you have a trick mastered. It does not matter if you can occaisionally wing it because you have it dialled on the other side. That is not mastery. When you rely on muscle memory, you want it to be a useful, actual memory and not just an imaginative fantasy.

BTW, I was saying this to myself as well. It is what I learned while drilling consecutive mirages on my weakside two days ago.

Clippers: Do what you need to do to get good crank. Get yourself lower to the ground using arms for balance and keep your weight on your support toe.

Wow. Bear oclock at the new job. I'm not kidding. I have an Augustiner in one hand and the other on my help desk!

2.5 hours till shred with Rieferman!

Scf had another session with Bob this morning, sans Jake. It's always good to kick with Bob. He has good advice and is constantly learning new tricks and links.

Highlights:
Pixie simple swirl (new trick)
TorqueX2 first try
Paradon-paradox torque both sides

I am going to shift gears with my footbag playing. I feel like I should lower it on my list of priorities and concentrate on making my life what I want it to be. Bob reminds me my most important goal in life is to be a great dad. If I really want to make this happen I am going to have to be focused. So:

Nils: When you get back I will school tiltless tricks with you whenever our schedules meet. I know you kick later it is possible that after I get home from work and take care of some responsibilities we can have a session.

Matt: Since your preferred time is to kick before I am done with work, I will leave it up to you to contact me if you are running behind or if you are available on weekends. We should be in contact before the next children's day event.

Jake: You let me know when you can kick and I will do my best to accommodate based on my availability. It's great that you are busy doing what you do. Remind me to get a PDA so that we can make this sort of thing happen easier.

Tripp: If you can make it to town I'll try to be there.

Edit: Bob brought a Drew Kraus(e?) (dufflebag) bag today. I opted to kick with it over the bag everyone else used. Their bag was on the heavy side for me and my knees do not like it sometimes. The Drew bag, however is amazing. I am glad that I bought 3 off of him in NYC. Hopefully these will keep me for a while, and break in at least half as nice as Bob's.

Yo Bob and Ian, here is a tiny little video to prove that shred this weekend did in fact go down. To all the five million readers we have, Jake was there too, he just decided to pick up the camera and film, so none of his shred is there.

It was awesome to have you around for the day Bob. You're hilarious, and all around fun to chill with. And good at footbag.

And I didn't hit pixie dlo. I hit atomic dlo.

yoyoyo whats up in the burgh yall? had a nice long seessssssione last night, really long actually, did a lot of stretching and non footbag related exercises to start it off and then went about doing a shitload of drills. worked my way up from 10 toes stalls to 10 insides then 20 toes, 20 insides, so on untill i hit 50 toes and kept dropping around 30 or 40 when i tried doing that many insides shame i didnt get the 50 which is what i really wanted, but it was still good. also did a similair drill with atws and ratws and other legovers so on and by the time i was finished with that i was already pretty beat but i was able to work up to like 10 or 15 same side clippers on both sides before i crapped out which is REALLY GREAT for me with this new bag because thats about what i was hitting with my big softie. idk whether its this new bag or not (i think it is and ill explain why) but i cant do more than a few alternating clippers nemore, and i do much better when i freeze em then when i dont, unlike the same side clippers which have a distinct rhythm to them. reason i think its the new bag, and also something i need to work on, is that when i set the bag from my other side, it always feels like the bag is travelin too far and i over shoot the set, and therefore even when i do catch the bag it seems to roll off of my foot away from me (new bag=rolly polly). u were talking about moving around the bag and setting it straight up every time, but it always wants to move toward me when i try to set it a little higher than usual in order to to give me enough time to get to it with my other foot. im going to practice trying to keep the bag in the same place more and move around it but other than that in itself is there any advice u can give me?

edit: that shred was sick props on whatever the fuck that insane trick was matt and ian i really liked ur string in the first vid too bad about the cameraman johns

I think that these are very important things to concentrate on. If you have any question, ask away. I look forward to schooling tiltless when you get back.

Yeah, I goofed on the description. I bet Matt could hit the pixie version a lot easier. I spent my time looking at the second component the whole time. His does alpine tricks all the time. It's frightening that any ADD I may have, could have potentially filtered them out. BTW, that is a complement.

Regarding the first string of mine: I liked seeing it too. Thanks for the post and props. Regarding the second string, well, I sucked that first session.

Today:

Kicked with Matt:
My Highlights:
>Gyro and spin moves. Looking better. I have to remember to set before spinning. OT, Matt's new MC bag is like the golden child of bags
>Stepping out of infinities both sides. Thanks to my friend Eli for helping me fix my bike.
>Fixes Paradon on my weak side: Thanks Bob Riefer, I hit many PM-Paradon, repeat drills. Identified a weakness in my left side mirage
>Dialed torque on my right side. Hit it first try afterwards on the other. That comes next session. FTW

Peace.

hey everyone ok wow what a day i had and im beat as fuck after starting off with a bike trip then going to this pro kart racing thing (and when i say kart racing i mean like insane mario kart type shit, not go karts) then playing football yes american football, and finally kicking for a few hours before taking a shower and here i am. its alm ost 4 in the morning here btw and im in physical pain so forgive me that im not going to make sure that this post makes sense. great news of the day: my partner in crime, matt katz, finally out of nowhere displayed major interest in learning footbag. and ive just been trying to get this guy to play hacky sack for like 2 years! so yeah that was great and i had a lot of fun just kicking it around hack style with him but at the same time it was a little frustrating because he never played before or even played soccer growing up or anything so this whole feet thing is new to him. at least he managed to get like 5 or 6 consec insides at one point so i know theres potential. because of him playing i didnt get to do any drilly stuff but man out of nowhere even with this shitbag and without setting the bag straight up and moving around it like ive been meaning to, i hit about 8 alternating clippers in the middle of a modest string while i was screwing around and my last set was garbage but i still grabbed it with my toe and kept kicking it was just a great feeling. also been working on my left toeness, that is i pretty much didnt try any atws or anything with my right foot while we were playing and i realized how unnatural everything felt with my left foot, even thoughi can still do all the same tricks i can with my right, so yeah im not sure if todays little session actually got me anywhere concerning that, but im certainly going to commit to getting my left foot to the point where i dont have to concentrate so hard to get my sets right, which is surprisingly where most of the awkwardness comes from in single legover tricks even though i feel like i can straight up consec toe stall forever. anyway Ian that post was GRRRREAT! and.... insane! and... artistic.... and well anyway thanks for confirming my suspicions about clipper sets back there. ill be back in town before you know it so better redd up for some summer schools peace

Grief!!!

So, all I want to do is play footbag. dflkjghalkjfghafd

The excitement that I hit at least 7 torques- hand grabs in a row today really made me excited. So here is a story about how I spent the rest of the day:

I came home and laid out plans for collaborating with one of my favorite friends from my first college. I am really excited about this, and when I am done with this cathartic writing I will methodically work my way back into research develop and training mode for that.

Then I continued cleaning up my kitchen, house, bedroom, studio etc. Very important to be organized when you are working a new job, developing a new sleep schedule and preparing to collaborate with multiple people.

Afterwards I put my laundry in the machine, and ran half a mile to the supermarket. I then purchased $30 worth of ingredients, to match another 10 or so I have at home and I prepared my favorite dish. Actually I first tried to run home with these enormous bags but my shoulders could not take it. Anyways, I was able to identify a muscle growth in my calve that is screaming for more stepping sets and torques. And, also, an enormous vat of Hungarian Style Beef Goulash! YES!!!...

I have my dinner and lunch made for the rest of the week! And I still have left over blueberry pancakes from this morning!!! AGHHHH!

So here's what's up. I got food. And things I really, really want, need and am obligated to do. Somehow I am going to:
A) Fall asleep
B) Wake up
C) Get to work
D) Get through work
E) Immediately head to the park to own torques
F) still have enough energy to brush up massively on a variety of web development protocol without exhausting myself too much before I
G) finish building my first electronic instrument after work on Tuesday.

I think this can all be done. I wonder how I can possibly feel so good. I can tell you though, that getting past the 10 year+ hurdle (pun intended) that I have had with torque is really inspiring to me.

And here's how it all comes together for closure. The other day one of my favorite footbag players (and people) and I were talking about how good it feels to still be playing after all of these years, and to still be in our prime. I remember telling Ken that I still am nowhere near that yet. And I mean it. I may have to be a bit more organized in the future. I may have to play by myself because of time conflicts. But it's totally on.

Goodnight.

Edit: Niels- that's great that your friend joined in. Looking forward to classes.
