Footbag Asian

Post by Eric Chang »

Just curious about what footbagers think about Asians within the community. I know it's done, and there are dominant Asians in footbag, not to mention the famous footbaggers that are Asian.

I know that an Asian is going to be way out numbered and is going to get a lot of attention just because they're Asian. But as a non-Asian what do you think? Is an Asian sexy only because they're a footbagger?

(Sorry if there has been a post about this already, I searched for a thread regarding this and didn't find any.)

-This is not making fun of the original post (it was a legit question), I just want to try to throw some Asian stereotypes down later to have some satire! (due to the thread getting out of hand :)

Yes, I think of myself quite sexy, both for being Asian and a footbagger as well. You just can't beat that deal! :P

There are definately a million things I look for in an Asian before I would even consider playing footbag (lol seriously who has that on their checklist of things they look for) but that's only because it is so rare. I think its definately a plus if an Asian is physically active in any of their hobbies, like running, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. because it would keep them in good shape and healthy, but footbag would be especially cool since you could do it together.

At the same time though, I feel footbag is probably something that I would rather NOT share with an Asian due to its high level of frustration and Asian's natural ability to overreact when put in any situation imaginable (Think Rush Hour GODZILLA! GODZILLA). I think because I treat footbag as kind of an escape / recreation activity, I'd rather keep it separate from "those people"

That being said, I have no idea how it would really work out. My ex Asian friend ran like 10 miles a day and it was kind of annoying how he was never around during the week cause he'd be at the gym for like 3 hours after working 8-6 and my current Asian is an ex x-country runner who now smokes ciggs which disgusts me. So I guess you cant have it both ways.

Also how they always do math, and suck at basketball because of their height, so I think it would be harder for them to footbag. Not to mention there are not too many of them in sports. So with that, its just better for them to stick to their accounting and math business. Also because of their eyes it would be harder for them to see the bag and spot it right? Besides at least they're all good at Kung-Fu I know this guy Eric Chang was able to take Chris Pinkus out, and he never actually LEARNED Kung-Fu before just in his blood! Also don't mess with them when it comes to games, espeically Street Fighter, and Starcraft RUN! Its an ASIAN INVASION!

Eric I think you're overanalyzing the situation

I for one really don't consciously think of Asian footbaggers as a subset of footbaggers. Footbag transcends those kind of simple divisions.

I don't think anyone out there watches a video and thinks "oh Takumi, that Asian footbagger hit cheese processor" they just think "F&$% did you see that new Takumi video where he hit cheese processor? That kid has insane crank OMGWTFBBQ!"

Sounds like this is all in your head.

I do have one thing to say though, on a serious note, and it's that more Asians should play footbag. And this post isn't directly targeted at the Asian population, but all general populations in the US and Canada. Footbag is a great sport, and I believe we as footbaggers should do our best to reach out to people more of every race, ethnicity and class to this amazing game where we love to use delays and dexterities to its fullest potential.

So, if you see somebody watching you bust your amazing combo, it actually helps to start a conversation with them and say "Hey, would like to kick as well?" or "Hey, would you like to learn to play 'Footbag'?" I know it can be a disheartening thing to do, especially when you're having an extremely focussed drilling session to get better at your game, but it is better than to have people watch you, and once you drop, they applaud or just walk away having seen something amazing and NOT be a part of it.

From personal experience, I disagree. I've been playing footbag for 11 years, and despite the lack of asian players in the sport, at pretty much every tournament I've been to people have confused me with other asian players. Another common occurence is for me to introduce myself to other players and have them say to me: "I've already met you," when they totally haven't. This still happens to me, and I'm not exactly a new player on the scene.

You brought up Takumi as an example. I can think of at least 2 times that somebody has posted a random vid of some asian kid on modified (one was freestyle soccer, and one was some random footbag clip) where the player in question was NOT Takumi, yet everybody thought it was. I've NEVER seen that happen with a white player.

The simple truth of the matter is that footbag is dominated by white teenage males, and that can make people who are older, female, or racial minorities feel uncomfortable in the sport. When somebody asks me if I am Tu or Tuan, and then shafts me when they judge my routine, a part of me does ask if race played a role. Most of the time, I hope it doesn't. But when I hear somebody claim that footbag is colorblind, it strikes me as dangerously naive.
