Monthly Shred in Philadelphia
Monthly Shred in Philadelphia
Last year the crew here at Temple University hosted, on a few occasions, small jam sessions. I thought it would be great idea to start it up early this year and get some outdoor shredding in, maybe around various parts of Philly or around Temple campus.
over the weekend at the NYFA jam I was nudged in the direction of starting this up, Philly is in-between some major cities so it should be semi-convenient for people interested. There are a few freestylers at Temple U that should be able to attend, perhaps a couple members of NYFA if interested, some New Jersey shredders, maybe even further away if we are lucky!
I'm aiming for the *first* weekend of every month, probably Saturday shred but maybe Sundays instead, starting First weekend of September, 6th or 7th.
I recently moved into a house just a few blocks south of campus, lots of couches and crash space so if you ask it can be arranged.
Anyone interested? Comments, ideas and suggestions appreciated!

If that's the date of Funtastiks I will probably have to change the date and go to Funtastiks
I knew it was coming up soon but haven't heard much about it yet.
maybe first weekend of September, the following weekend could work also.
David: as for any date before the 20th, if we could get some people interested for the weekend before that, like Saturday, August 16 or the next day. I know I would be down for sure.

Yo,
First weekend of the month sounds like a good recurring date -- a fairly easy schedule to remember.
So, the weekend after Labor Day/Funtastiks? Cool. Thats still kind of a long time from now. Remind me again when I see you in Harrisburg. Between then and now I'll be kind of busy...
As for the finer details of the schedule: personally, there are a number of things I've been wanting to see and do in Philadelphia for a while now, just waiting for a good excuse, such as the Franklin Institute and the art museum (they've got the biggest collection of Rodin scuptures outside of Paris, and I'm sure there's plenty of other good stuff besides). So, to that end, I generally prefer a late afternoon or evening shred so that it leaves my morning and early afternoon free to do that cultural stuff. If the shred session is always right in the middle of the afternoon it never leaves me enough time to do anything else, since the museums don't stay open real late, and I simply don't get up real early. So, what I'm trying to say is that I'd rather meet and start kicking at 4:30-5:00 (or later) than at 1:00 or 2:00. But thats just a request. Obviously, Philly shred doesn't revolve around me, and I'll probably still come if everybody else wants to kick in the middle of the afternoon.

It'd actually be really cool to make these weekends a combination of shred and culture. I was talking to Vince about this last night, and he was thinking we could have the shreds alternate between DC and Philly, so Philly one month, DC the next, etc. Both places have enough cultural spots that we could organize a culture trip in the morning followed by a shred right afterwards.
Just a thought.
Just a thought.
I think that NYC is obviously a cultural centrifuge, but the thing about DC and Philly is that they are equidistant from several places. On the otherhand, I am sure that SCF is down with sharing the splendor of PGH with y'all (or as they say here:Yinz).Rabbit wrote:hey im totally in, but we gotta throw nyc into the mix too! alternate between dc/ philly/ and N'YORK
This is such a great idea. Word. I think some of my crew would be down with this. If we new in advance, there are cheap flights too. Let's get the details of this put together tightly.
Great idea. Oh yeah, DC and the cultural business is a great idea.
I am definitely down for culture trips before shred, alternating between DC and Philly. I'm not sure about NYC, not because this place is the mecha for all things multicultural and that it would be difficult to choose what to do, but that it's a pain to get in and out of NYC efficiently.
First weekend of the month could be doable for me. I'm not sure about my schedule for August and September, as I will be attending both Funtastiks and Hackrifice then. My budget could be an issue. However, I'll see what I can do and see if I can attend.

Thank you. I wasn't sure how to articulate that myself. NYFA Jams are always worth it, but NYFA always gets through-traffic from outsiders too.
I think it is important that more centralized places with not as much attention be realized. This thread rocks. Great idea!

I've said it before: the real problem I have with combining NYFA shred sessions and the other things I'd like to do in NYC is the timing issue -- I can't come to a 1:30 shred and also go to the MOMA or the Met, since they're not open late enough to go AFTER a mid-afternoon shred (plus, I'd be all sweaty), and there isn't time to go seem them BEFORE such a shred unless I wake up at 7:00 am on a Saturday, and thats simply an unappealing option. Plus, wandering museums is known to have a strange psychologicaly soporific effect, making people tired anyway (sometimes refered to as "museum syndrom"), so waking up extra early for one makes it extra hard to enjoy it anyway, thus, pointless. This past winter, one of the few times I actually made it in to NYC to shred was when NYFA had an unusually late afternoon shred at the Capoeira Angola studio, which allowed me to finally get around to checking out the Jewish Museum on 92nd street (its free on Saturdays), and at that time they had a nice showing of many of Camille Pissarro's paintings. I enjoyed the paintings alot, but I seem to recall I played very poorly. C'est la vie.Wasabi wrote:I'm not sure about NYC, not because this place is the mecha for all things multicultural and that it would be difficult to choose what to do, but that it's a pain to get in and out of NYC efficiently.
Anyway, I think this whole topic is getting a little too large and ambitious. I suggested a "Once-A-Month Shred" to the Philly crew because I don't realistically expect to drive an hour and a quarter there each weekend, and, several years back the Ministry of Silly Walks used to play all the time, but, for a couple of really good years we had a "Last-Sunday-Of-The-Month Jam" all during the colder months, and, as a mid-point for them, we seemed to have alot of success getting some New York AND Philly kickers together with the Jersey players at least a couple times each season, plus, it took just about zero extra planning beyond sending a few e-mail reminders, and it was a good way to inject a little extra enthousiasm into the Jersey scene. Also, nobody was really being asked to drive all that far all that often. On the other hand, suggesting that we all go between Philly, New York, and Washington DC on a rotating basis -- thats a pretty different proposition, and on a whole other scale -- I'm not committing to a four hour drive down to DC for a single afternoon jam... AND, I thought, with only a small core of freestylers in Philly, they could use the boost of a regular monthly visit from half-a-dozen or more other kickers. To take that casual jam down to DC (which is just far) or up to NYC (which already has a history of very regular and fairly well attended weekly sessions) would seem to deprive Philly of something I think it could really use.
I'm not in Philly, its not really up to me, but I say SET UP YOUR OWN MONTHY JAMS, DAMN IT !!! This topic is about a monthy PHILLY jam !!!

To Ken:
To the topic in general: Yeah, let's make these monthly sessions for Philly instead. I mean, we can definitely organize places like in NYC and DC once in a blue moon, but the Philly scene is still very new and fresh. We need to blow that place up, with footbag!
