The only thing is that marking holes isn't helpful for learning to stitch, it's more of a crutch that will prevent you from learning to space using your brain and fingers.

Templates are good, but holes aren't necessary.

Template Steps :

Post by Hobit »

Here gos the tutorial Alf enjoy .

Step one :

Hand draw your hexagon and pentagon templates on card stock .
Or cheat and use this : http://patterns.phasing.org/ . Print results .

Step two :

Cut out the pentagon and hexagon so that the black line from your pen is cut off . This will help compensate for what i call "the trace factor" . The enlarging of the templates that occurs during tracing onto new surface .

Step three :

Trace the paper templates onto a plastic material . Prefferably an 1/8" thick will be sturdy and rigid . Something not easily flexible is the key .

Step four :

Measure final dimensions to make sure templates are correct . Once again
cut out templates accordingly to compensate for "the trace factor" .
I used a razor blade to cut out my template . I would have preffered a
Bandsaw or a Jig Saw at the least . A bandsaw is easier to work with .

Step five :

Measure again to verify the templates still have the correct dimensions .
Now is the time to mark out the holes . I measure in an 1/8" in from the edge of the template and draw a line all the way around . Witch should
creat a smaller exact shape inside the template .

Step six :

Starting from a point on this newly drawn internal shape i begin down one line and make a mark along the line every 1/8" . Once completed all the way around both the hexagon and pentagon its time to drill . I use a Sharpie "Ultra Fine Point" marker . It has a fairly long thin tip that can reach through an 1/8" template but without requiring over an 1/8" hole .
I used either a 3/32" or 7/64" bit . If you have a metal dill bit set and compare the asuming bit to the tip of the marker youll be alright .
Remember to use the smallest drill you can use and keep your drill
straight up and down as to not drill crooked holes . The smaller the drill
the lighter and easier it is to control . Some Drills come with levels on them
witch makes it much easier to make your holes perfectly straight .
A rear mounted level is best usualy its circular in shape .

I hope this is sufficient .
If anyone would like a step defined further please let me know .

@Mosher : I agree that the holes are a crutch . But practice makes perfect
and with the holes being there as a guide will help a stitcher get into the
rythm or habit of nailing there stitches right where they need to be .
Sooner than later after a few bags the holes wont be needed it will be so
natural . I think the coordination can be learned simply by reppetition but without the age old time taking practice by hand eye coordination method .

@Alf : Nice video . I dont mind the off topic . Besides it just seems you
couldnt help having to show me . ;) Thanks for the link , funny vid .
