This is kind of going to be weird to say, but I feel like I have to write it down. But I think the competitive aspect of footbag is gone for me. I used to want to be the absolute best when I started playing. I wanted to be the absolute best before I started playing. I guess that was my of expressing myself and my desires. It was the hero I always saw myself as in the tv shows and video games I watched and played. In my mind, for a long time, I was constantly comparing myself to others (even if it was completely unrealistic). At one point, I remember seeing a Vasek video and seriously being like "I'll be better than him one day." And even not too long ago, I was comparing myself to other players of my age/starting time, and really pushing myself hard as a result. In my head, I had to be better than people like Eoghan, Cale, Paulo, and other people that started about my time or were around my age. And I guess that I saw two pathways: one way, I could lock myself up from the world around me, dedicate my life to footbag, drill 5+ hours a day, and become unbelievably good, or I could play for fun, make friends among the community, live a normal life, and be happy. The first path would lead me to inevitable misery. I would be missing out on so much if all I thought about was footbag and getting better. But aside from all this, I don't think I'll ever quit playing. I'll probably still always carry a bag in my pocket and wear shred shoes everywhere. But that's not the point of this. I just felt like I had to finally stick the gravestone into the grave of my mental competitiveness in this sport. I just hope somebody understands what I'm saying/doing, haha.
I tried v8 fusion today. God only knows how optimistic I was about trying it. I thought to myself "hey, this can't be bad."
I couldn't even finish the glass. I got so damn nauseous from it. I could clearly taste/smell tomato in it, and that doesn't go well with fruit. I would imagine that v8 fusion tastes like how my dog's breath smells. I don't care how good it is for you, it's terrible. Maybe I picked a bad flavor or something, but Jesus Fucking Christ. I would rather drink 5 cans of v8 than 3 sips of v8 fusion.

Hey, I completely understand what you mean by the always seeing yourself as the hero. I'm the same way. Its tough when you finally realize that life doesn't always work the way you want it to. Its part of getting older. I think that you should try to find the happy medium inbetween hardcore drilling and social fun (idk if this is the right phrase for this). I only suggest this because you're already good. You seem like someone who has good enough judgement to know when too much footbag is too much. In the first few months of my getting into footbag, I saw your video of you hitting 20 tiltless, and I just told myself wow. I just got the impression that you have what it takes to go the distance. I knew you'd be a person whose progress was worth following. I know I'm pretty much just a random person at this point but I think it'd be worth it to stick with it full force. Not 5 hour drilling full force, but just full force

Today I did 98 contacts of clipper>ss mirage>rpt. It was kind of unexpected, and I did it first try. I also hit flip DOD (hey, wait! I just realized that was a challenge! woo!) and came close to flip barfly. Spinning's also coming much easier, especially flip. I'm still having a hard time with atomic, but my flipside seems to be understanding the concept better than strong.. even if it doesn't feel right just yet. Oh yeah, and also 7 contacts of dimwalk>blur>rpt.

930 consecutive kicks today. It was really humid, so my shirt ended up weighing about 10 pounds once I was done. Or maybe I'm just exaggerating (<<hey look, I spelled it right).
Anyway, I had band camp today and I have it for the rest of the week. Fun

No more stupid band camp anymore (btw, it's not really a 'camp.' I guess the title is kind of catchy though.) Fortunately enough, I didn't get sunburnt the entire week even though I didn't wear any sunscreen. I also got kind of a compliment. One of the parents of my one friend has a freshman daughter in band this year, and she's never been to a public school before and was kind of scared, but she told her mom that I was really nice and welcomingish. Which is strange, because sophmore and junior year I was an asshole all the time. But I kind of got tired of acting that way.
Anyway, I finally reached my voice high enough to sing the chorus to Bullet With Butterfly Wings today, which is a big accomplishment for me. I might make a video of it and put it on youtube. It feels awesome to be able to sing that song on the right octave, even if it hurts a little afterwards.
And aside from all that, I got a job at Jewel. Whoopie.

You're lucky, I think our school has 3 weeks of band camp with 3 practices a day for 5 days a week I think.
Luckily I quit two years ago. Bullet with Butterfly Wings is one of my favorite songs.

Quote/story of the day:
[Going in for a job interview for a new Best Buy thats opened up. Looking lost, I open the door and walk in.]
"Well, I guess I'm in the right place," I say, seeing a handful of people wearing blue polos.
"You are if you're looking to apply for Circuit City," a man seated to my right says.
I reply back "Well, I heard they're better anyway."
Everyone in the room went silent for a split second, then started laughing.

I thought it was pretty funny. Although, I probably wouldn't have said that if I didn't already technically have a job at Jewel. Jewel got back to me faster than Best Buy, and I was already hired within a few hours of applying. If I were only applying to Best Buy I probably wouldn't have said it, but it's not too often you get opportunities like that. But I think I would rather have the Jewel job anyway.
I'm glad I did go in and interview though, because I've never actually had one and I feel like I learned a lot from it. I even wrote some stuff down once I started driving away.
1. I need to make more eye contact. I noticed that the interviewer was looking down at the question sheet more than he looked at me, but that shouldn't have stopped me from looking at him more.
2. I need to define what work ethics mean to me. There's a possibility that question might come up again at a later time (whether it be a job or school or whatever) so I want to have a solid answer.
3. Don't insult the company you're trying to get a job from, you stupid douche bag.
4. Ask questions! I remember hearing this from somewhere, that it's important to ask questions and have a good knowledge of the company. But I wasn't expected to have that question asked of me. I should probably have asked about benefits or at least something that would show that I was more interested.
And that's all I got for today. I might play some foobag tomorrow. I should go downtown again one more time before school starts. Maybe I'll be lucky and my old man will let me take the train down there (I've done it before, but he doesn't know so ssshhhhhh).

I haven't practiced in like two weeks. I should tomorrow.
I need a new acoustic guitar. Mine's got a huge crack in the neck. I can pull on it and it changes the pitch. It's almost like an acoustic whammy bar, only if it snaps, I'm fucked. Everythings really expensive though. Thank god I got a job and finally have money.
When I went to the guitar store today, I forgot a pick and had to fingerpick. I've only tried it like once before, but when I did it today it proved to be kind of a fun little challenge. I should practice it more often.
That's all that's really on my mind.

In the half hour I played today, I managed to rip apart my favorite bag by stepping on it and twisting (of course, on accident). I'll have to make another one then.
I should start thinking about buying steel shot. I would've just repaired the bag, but it was filled with lead and I didn't want to mess around with it, really.

I got my quantums today!
From first glance, they're kind of flimsy feeling. I was kind of thinking the material would be more like lavers, but it's kind of cottony. They're a tight fit, I do have to say, but I feel like they'll stretch out (especially the heel tab. It's really cushiony and feels like once I start wearing them it'll puff out less.
And that's all I can say about them right now. I have to find a new way to lace them, because the lacing I did for my lavers isn't quite as useful on these.

I had my first real session with my Quantums today. The toe feels pretty good, but the inside is a lot different than my G-units. I'm gunna really have to work my inside stalls in order to wear these. I wore them without insoles for about half the session, then when I put the insoles back in, I noticed that I did have a little more room in them than before, meaning that they do stretch out in time. They're proving to be a better shoe than I originally thought they would be. I'm hoping that v4 comes out with size 13 1/2 or 14, because I don't want to deal with having to break them in every time just so they're not crushing my toes.
I really didn't play that much all summer long. I guess I'll just consider that my "off season." There was too much stuff going on this summer. So when I played today, I decided that I would fix all the holes in my game, starting with toe kicks. I got 108 today after about a 3 hour session. They're not as easy as you would think, and I feel it's a necessary skill to completely master. So I'd say pretty much until winter or late fall I'm just going to be doing stuff like this and totally conquer all the basics and tiltless moves I can, as well as condition/weightlift. I'm kinda thinking a one day off/one day on kinda thing, where I shred one day, then lift and do aerobics the next.
I'd love to sit here and chat with this stupid blog all day, but dinner awaits. Tally-ho!

Well, I won a stupid prom ticket from a random drawing at some assembly today. I guess I'm going to prom this year
Actually, I'm somewhat happy about it. I guess that it is afterall free, and I was kinda planning on going anyways.
I played after school today with Jake. I was a little rusty, since I really didn't play all that much during the summer, but I managed to hit a really good string infront of the assistant principal, who's the one who's helping us make a footbag club at school. The string was so good that I couldn't drop it, and forced myself to catch it. Those are the best kinds of strings, the ones that you have to catch. I think that a catch is more aesthetic than just a drop. I mean, it's good to keep going until you drop, but catches are just soooo cool, especially the behind the back shtuff. I don't know where I'm going with this.
But anyways, even though my game wasn't that good, I did come pretty close to some far-swirl type moves, almost hit whirling swirl, footed flip atomsmasher, and came close to nuclear pdx mirage, which probably has a nickname that I don't know, nor do I care enough to look up. I was also watching some old worlds footage during 4th block (my school only has 4 blocks a day, because we're special... pfft.) and I noticed that I was kind of picking up some certain players' styles just by watching them. Especially Honza's. The entire time I was playing after school today, I just kind of felt like I was moving like Honza. It's weird how peoples' styles effect me like that.
While I'm kind of on the subject of worlds routines, watching the routines of the past made me think "this years routines really suck." Seriously, the videos of this years worlds just sucked. Everyone looked like they were too afraid to drop. Very little risk involved. I liked Sergey's the best, but that's not really saying much. I don't know, I guess I can see how the judges came up with their decisions, but I don't really agree with them. And that's why I'm posting here rather than the videos section. But anyways, this is what I hate about routines:
-Not enough variety. When you're Vasek and all you do is a bunch of whirrs and barroques and shit like that, it's not fun to watch. We've all seen it before, we all know you're good at those tricks (as well as every other trick known to man), but the same 20 tricks get pretty old.
-Stupid toe bails. Fuck toe bails. I can see if someone does it for a short break, but the stupid low toe stall thing like 3 different times in a routine isn't fun to watch. Once maybe, if it's in correspondence to the music.
-Two bag juggling. It's not that amazing when basically EVERYONE in open does them. I'd like to see some three bag juggling, or maybe even some cool two bag tricks like the ones Jorden was doing in that one video.
-Just plain shred. Come on. Save it for circles and shred 30, or for a video. I always thought of routines as more of like a dance routine or an ice skating routine. It's always more interesting to see someone do a bunch of easy tricks to really fitting music than a bunch of hard tricks that are strung together and have no relevance or coherence or anything to do with the music. I want to see more movement, more art, more expression, not just "watch me play foosbag, lolz."
I like watching routines, and I would rather watch a routine than a circle competition, but routines have become so damn cliche. That's really my only problem with them, is how predictable they are. Less drops would be nice, but I feel like right now people should move towards more interesting routines, rather than just dropless. The sport won't expand, and the players won't get better if everyone's afraid to drop. Whatever though.
