Wasabi wrote:I got a little riled up on the Women's Gymnastics all-around comp. Nastia Liukin was seriously underscored for vault and uneven bars, and Yang Yi Lin was scored way more than she was supposed to (I saw those balance checks, I can tell). Thankfully, at beam and floor exercise, both Liukin and Johnson dominated.
I completely agree. Nastia was so graceful and controlled. Yang Li Lin def scored higher than I think she deserved on beam. We still took gold and silver though. It was definitely amazing to watch.

I was very active in gymnastics and swimming when I was younger so I love watching it in the olympics. Used to be a dream of mine to make it there for either sport. Yay Phelps! He truly is amazing. Although his body proportions give him a slight advantage to other swimmers, he's still very talented. He def earned those goldsfair and square; he's incredibly dedicated and has an extremely intense training regimen.

I like short girls, but Shawn Johnson is 16. It's illegal to hit on her at my age. :P But yeah Manna, if you come over to the States, you can definitely stalk her and make her yours. :)

Seeing Liu Xiang disqualifying himself out of the 110m hurdles competition due to an Achilles injury was a travesty to me. Probably because I'm Chinese and saw his amazing run at the 2004 Olympics at Athens, and maybe because I almost messed up my Achilles tendon over a stupid injury a year-&-a-half ago. I really wanted to see him run at his native land of China, but now it's not going to be possible. Shit. :(

In lighter news, did anyone see Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser run the 100m dash? Daaaaaaaaaaamn. 8O

Seriously, Bolt was ridiculous. Celebrating with 15 meters left to go and still getting a world record. After the event they interviewed him and asked what time he could have achieved if he tried those last meters. He said he didn't care about World Records, he only cared about the gold.

He's only been running the 100m for 1 year!?!

No, I don't play soccer. Yes, there are competitions. 4 years. Lots of practice.

yeah, that was utter rediculousness. not only did he let up and start celebrating like that, but he even kept running around the track for a good ways like the sprint he just did didn't even tire him in the least.

Bolt's run was fucking thrilling!

He just pulled away! So badass!

On the topic of badass, I have my first ever athlete crush on Victoria Pendelton:

Today I watched her take gold in the sprints, thrilling!

That Bolt guy and the rest of the Jamaican team are nuts. The tv said that there were some preliminary scientific studies done about a protien that is secreted to fight the build up of lactic acid. They indicated that out of 200 people they studied in Jamaica it was prevalent in 90% and another country was somewhere around 30%.

Did anyone see Bolt's prelims? He ran for about 40 m and then just jogged and still beat the crap out of everyone.

Also, I am digging the rest of the athletics and of course the beach volleyball!

Me too buddy! I think Great Britain is really excelling on a lot of competitions related to cycling!

Nastia Liukin got jipped on the uneven bars! The rules over the tiebreaker are retarded! Then again, I have to say it was a pretty tight competition regardless (it was reminiscent to the whole debate for this year's Worlds over technical merit vs. dropless routines), so I don't have anything else to argue on the finals for this apparatus. I just want Nastia to dominate on the beam. :)

Gold medal match up between May-Treanor/Walsh and China for beach volleyball tonight! Can't wait!!

edit: They're match-up is this evening, not yesterday! :| At least I saw Dalhausser/Rogers completely obliterate Geor/Gia of Georgia. Geor & Gia? What the hell?

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8O

Seriously intense match in Men's volleyball quarterfinals between the USA and Serbia. They were seriously neck-to-neck, but USA had a really close break on the fifth set.

20-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 15-12. Amazing game! My heart seriously skipped a beat a couple of times!

Also, Lolo Jones missed the 9th hurdle on her gold medal match in the 100m hurdles. Very tragic, since she was the favorite to win this. :(

This chart is pretty cool;

Jamaica are dominating these Olympics :P Although North Korea is smashing it on GPD, although that's not too accurate for a communist country.

Hmm interesting ... Can anyone think of any specific favorite consumptives of the Jamaican's that might make them the said supermen that they are?

One of the commentators that reviewed Usain Bolt's 100m gold medal run mentioned that he interviewed his father, and he said that Usain grew up eating the yams grown in the northwestern part his hometown. Although the comment seemed half-hearted, time and nutrition can be factors that benefitted to Bolt's metabolism.

It sounds almost certainly to be a genetic factor, rather than environmental.

Jamaica being an island with a small amount of immigration, it's likely that there would be close genetic links within the population and likely that we'd see positive (and negative) genetic differences between any isolated population and the species population as a whole.

edit; There is (or was) probably high selection pressure on running fast in short bursts. In Africa (especially Ethiopia and Kenya) there is probably high selection pressure on being able to run fast for a long time (presumably because of the large open spaces).

Talking about genetic differences and the evolution of different races of humans is definitely very controversial, but given that it occurs with all isolated populations of life except humans, I think we can be pretty confident that it happens with humans as well.

Congradulations to Argentina, the 2nd (Or in case of medals) 3rd best team in the world.

No, just kidding, fuck the Argentines you're stlye of Basketball is ugly and is dependant on flopping. The tallest, most skilled, most athletic team in the games did nothing but jack up 3's all game against you, and you still lost by twenty.
