church and state

Post by Reid »

Is church and state more important than freedom of religion?

What are your thoughts on this highly debated issue?

Well the seperation of church and state actually helps us express freedom of religion as our goverment can't impose a certain religion on us.

well the foundation of this country were based on biblical concepts and ideas. We have printed all over this nation things such as "God bless america" and "in God we trust". why r we making it so people cant pray in schools and say the pledge of allegents has to be changed.... thats taking away a freedom (praying). so i dont c how we really have either.

just my thoughts
(and of the record i work in youth ministry and sound work for a church)

Children -can- pray in school if they so please. The point is to seperate church and state in the sense that praying doesn't become a mandatory thing. The kids who feel like taking the initiative would go ahead and do so on their own time. That way people can practice their own religion without feeling threatened by the religions of others. As a person who has come, through various encounters with religion, to be a strong atheist -- I am not comfortable with the pledge of alleigance. Thusly, I do not say it. This is simply not enough, though. A pledge to a country is one thing, but a pledge to a country and a god is slightly different, and cannot be imposed on everyone. In saying that I am an atheist, that doesn't mean that I hate religion or religious people. Plenty of my friends and those that I love are religious.
