No one is expecting you to keep up with any one else. :-) Footbag is about each player as an individual.

Not true.

Hey Shannon,
I know what it's like to feel intimidated playing with people who are really advanced, it feels especially rough when you're just starting. It is important to know that even though you might feel like what you're doing most of the time is dropping, that's not what's going through the minds of the other people in your circle. It's probably something more like "She just beat her toe stall record by 4, nice." Learning how to play footbag is usually a slow process, and one that everyone else had to go through too. They're not judging you. Unless they're assholes. :-) One thing you'll probably learn soon is that footbag players aren't thinking that you're not working hard enough, they're just happy that there's a new person interested in the sport. People are usually really supportive of new players, especially when the player is a woman because there are so few of us in the sport.

It is a very different dynamic playing in a circle of just girls. Unfortunately, that is really rare for most of us. It usually only happens at tournaments or big jams.

I don't know who you've played with so far. Have you kicked with Richie and the gang down there? I met a few women who kick the last time I was there, but I don't know how often they come out. Maybe you could get their contact info from Richie and ask the ladies if they'll come out for the next session and kick with you for a while.

Shannon, you will get better faster when you play with people who are better than you. You want the advice of people who have nice styles and have been around for a long time because they're likely to be able to give correct and helpful advice. Try playing with whoever you have around you. If you don't feel like you're good enough yet, you're wrong. :-) But if you don't feel comfortable, try showing up to sessions but taking breaks to school stuff on the side. That way you'll get lots of practice but still be social, and more importantly you'll be able to ask for tips when you run into problems.

Yes, Santa Cruz is far far away from you, but if you're ever up in this area you can crash at my place and we'll get a few good kick sessions in.

Hi Shannon, We shred in San Marcos during the week and Oceanside on the weekends. We have a couple of female players who can do 2 and three add moves. We have players from 18 to 40 years old. Some hardcore and some just for fun and exercise. Give me a call for more info. Richard

Now you're talking! Talk to Richard Abshire.

He is, in fact, a very manly super-shredder who always lays down some intimidating mean shred, but he's also one of the coolest motor-scooters I know, and he is THE dude to know in San Diego if you're looking for footbag. Don't be scared of Richie -- he always uses his powers for good and not evil.
