Good times man. If things werent so amazing here in Seattle, I would be tempted to come join you. I'm really into my shred game lately, or whatever it should be called. Its great you have such a crew, ours smaller. I wish you would come visit us in Seattle.

We had two good occasions in the Sole Purpose group recently. I didn't have time to write about the first one last week, figured I would put both of them up at the same time.
Last Weds. (5/21/08 ) local freestyler Alex Bernstein hit his first 8 add move, Montage Rake. In about 11 months from starting to freestyle Alex hit his first 7 add move, now a year and 3 months in he has hit his first 8 add. Congrats Alex! Randomly he also hit his first Blurry Whirl-Blurry Whirl link. We are looking forward to watching him compete at the US Open this year.
This Weds. (5/28/08 ) the gang met up to have our first kick with Mr. David Clavens, it ended up being a fun session. The weather was pretty gray and rainy outside, but decently warm. Our usual kick space on Weds. is closed for renovations, thus we again kicked up on the campus under an overhang. It wasn't until later in the session we found out all the other jugglers had relocated to another space, but by then we were pretty deep into the kicking. Attendance was good for an outdoor rainy day (8 players), I hope to get the majority of the gang together soon!
Also at this most recent session Jake was shredding it up (I think Ben whispered in his ear to hit Spinning Ducking Motion for David), which he proceeded to nail very smoothly! A couple of shredders were messing around with Marius, which inspired me to hit it on my right and left (not same string). Ben Schmaltz was also putting it down, one combo early on was ridiculous, I believe Ben is capable of hitting 7 or 8 fives in a row without much difficultly. David also hit a new move without much effort, Symposium Whirling Ripstein. Great stuff! I look forward to a few more days off to heal up from last weekend, I think everyone who went down to SF is still a bit beat from that weekend. Today was a good kick off session however, the gang seems to be training hard for the Open this year!

Bah Bow down before the mighty mightyness of the mighty Team Stanford!!! We are taking over this blog in the name of Steve (not really but I'm pretending ok?!)
Anyways, despite meeting you a few times, I never had the chance to really footbag with you yet :-p But it was an honor for you to film for a bit (though nothing fancy) just remember you did some old school shred films so I had to ask for the chance! Not to mention I never really had a chance to kick with Nick either! (though I did manage to get up in his grills with the camera enough times a long with all the other players I filmed :-p)
David is such an awesome player and really opened my eyes to what I'll never hit :-p But never the less inspired me! Also on the note of things I'll never hit MONTAGE RAKE IN THAT LITTLE AMOUNT OF TIME! what are you feeding these kids?! Imported CZECH WATER?!

Salutations all!
We are gearing up for the US Open again, both on the admin side and shred side. The local players have begun really training for this event, I believe there are now 4-5 shred sessions per week (although I am not present at every one). Today (Sunday June 8th) had that in the air, the gang is really schooling towards something. Maybe they just want to fight off the Stanford Team...? David's presence has really boosted the players, this last session everyone was really pushing their game. Due to the nice sunny day (which we haven't had in a while) as well as the eminent US Open, attendance was good at Pioneer Square. It was one of the best days we have had in the spring, many players hit new things. Just a few;
-David: Threw some really nice fearless combos/7 add move combos, stepped up the intensity this session. I believe as the event draws closer he will continue to turn up the fire.
-Nick: Hit a new beast combo for one, as well some fine fearless. His game is on another level, and is transitioning from wide eyed talent to status quo pro. Some of the sessions I have viewed of him and David have been truly impressive. In San Francisco, one of my teachers (the great Tim Kelly) was very impressed with Nick, he really appreciated his style. I was happy the two met.
-Alex Bernstein: Hit a new 7, Whirly Gig Rake. Tore it up.
-Ben Schmaltz: Has really stepped it up, can in fact hit 5-7 fives fairly easy, not much fluff in this guy's game, many hard symposium links put together.
-Sean Wingert: Sean is basically kicking better than ever before, he impressed more than a few people at the Green Cup. His front side game is great, he can keep the bag on his toes double dexing for a great many contact!
-James Chance: Hit Blender for the first time, also some nice Blurry Whirls
-Jack Martin: Getting more technical again, putting together fours. Welcome back Jack!
Steve Cline: Stepping up his contacts and difficulty
Christina Murphy: She had learned her basic stalls before her kicks, but now is getting comfortable with kicking it and keeping it going in a circle
Jarrett Brown: Has become very consistent with his clippers and paradox mirages, something that he has been working to achieve for a while. Overall coordination has improved greatly!
-Jake Wren: Sadly was not out today, but has been playing quite amazingly. He reminds me a bit of Lon now, a strong mix of style and technical, very fun to watch. He may be the most creative player we have!
This was one of my best days in a while; mainly due to the energy of the group it was a great deal of fun. For shredding, I did not stay in one circle too long, but rather floated around all the circles. I did hit a great deal of things I have not messed with in a while, including both Barfly Swirls, both Paradon Swirls, and both Blurriest Swirls. Also hit the best Blurry Whirling Swirl of mine to date, it didn't take much effort and was high above the ground. Unfortunately going for my flip I got tangled in the air and decided to call it good for that move. Maybe next time!
We also are happy to welcome Jordan Wilgus to the group, he showed up sporting shiny new Lavers!
Two middle school kids also showed up and kicked a bit, both pretty well versed on the game ("we always call it footbag!"). We kicked a bit, I believe they will be back for future sessions and hopefully the US Open.
Another nice connection came out of today, we were approached to perform a series of workshops at another local school. This was nice, I didn't have to make one phone call! Another group of people passed by and asked if we were having a tournament that day, we replied not yet, then informed them about the real upcoming tournament.
Towards the end Kenny Shults made an appearance, the gang had an 'everyone in' Rippin Run in his honor.
After the session we went back to the house and played a great amount of Super Mario World and Super Street Fighter 2. The current line up at the house is; Christina Murphy, Kevin Hinkel, Alex Bernstein, David Clavens, Nick Landes (gradually moving in, one box at a time), and myself. It's a good mix of all freestylers.

Im looking forward to shredding with you guys again! Im buying a plane ticket from Boise this year because I hate the drive over! haha but as every day progresses I get more and more excited for the Open. as far as I know idaho crew has been shredding alot as well. me and kyle have played almost everyday here in Swan valley and Zeb jim daryl dylan and all those guys back in Boise have been shredding hard as well i hear, well see ya soon!

It was a fun school session today at Pioneer Square, everyone is preparing for the US Open in less than a month! David was in Bend Oregon, but Nick was around to throw down some intense combos as usual. I pushed it a little more than normal, it was basically the session I brought out all the moves I had sworn off over the past years due to knee and ankle issues. This included; PS Whirls back to back, Motions, flip Tomahawk, flip Paradox Blender, Reverse Whirls, Far Reverse Whirls, and Whirrs. Actually sealed my first left Whirr today without it hurting too badly. Since I was able to walk away from the session without much pain, some of those moves might actually go back into my regular vocabulary. Who knows!
David and Nick have been working on a new video project, mainly recording their circle sessions and school sessions. Some of what I have seen is pretty ridiculous, David is a machine and Nick is an alien. The two vastly different styles complement each other. Both shredders are pushing each other's game and sometimes trading off combos and moves. Definitely a good freestyle mesh of technical and artistic. The video should be pretty impressive, can't wait to see it when it drops!

On the home front, the 2008 US Open was a great deal of fun, and the usual large amount of work, but very rewarding. The Sole Purpose Gang welcomes Chase Card-Burns to Portland, we are happy to have him join the PDX scene! Chase rolled into town about an hour before our session, it ended up being a decent 10 person shred at the park near our house. Everyone kicked well, notably James Chance hit Alpine Legbeater. The weather was nice, we shredded for a couple of hours then headed down to the Montage to celebrate our new freestyler and roommate. In two days, Luis Monhollan comes to town as well to train with the group as well, then we are all headed over to Idaho for another great event. Huzzah!

Another good session today, 11 players including Luis Monhollan, fresh into town. Also kicked with a new freestyler named Jason who could hit some really good combos. Everyone kicked well. Switched into my new freestyle shoes today, much lighter and easier to play in, hit Whirlwind both sides. The gang is training for Idaho, should be fun!
It was another good day in the Sole Purpose Footbag Group. The day started out pretty rainy, but in spite of that we had a good turnout, 12 people. The great Aaron Orton and Shawnell Tolliver from Eugene came up for a visit, and we ended up finding a new great indoor spot. Some really good stuff was hit, most impressively by our own Nick Landes (no surprise), Alex Bernstein, and Sean Wingert. I was extremely impressed by Aaron Orton, who's game has jumped a great deal since the last time I saw him. He displayed many difficult/unique moves and links I had not seen from him before. Great stuff! After the session some of us went on the throw down in tennis, where resident kicker Steve Cline has proven he is the man. We have joked we need to have a Sole Purpose Olympics, where we all face off in different areas outside footbag including;
