Hey modifriends. Sorry for being so out of the loop lately. I haven't been on modified lately for 2 main reasons:

1. Lack of internet. I recently moved apartments, and still don't have internet at home. I also recently started my new job, and don't feel comfortable (or have the time) to check modified at work. There was also the week of Worlds, where I didn't have much opportunity to go online.

2. I had a bad accident at Worlds, and haven't been able to play footbag since Wednesday afternoon, a good 10 days ago. So I don't have any new footbag happenings to report, and I haven't gotten around to blogging about Worlds yet.

I'll get into more detail later, hopefully when I set up internet at home. For now though, the only news of note is:

1. I'm going to Funtastiks next weekend, though I may not play any footbag.

2. I tried playing footbag today for my first time since the accident. I can do tiltless toe tricks OK, and both clippers without much trouble, but I can't do much else yet. It's kinda depressing that I can't play at the level I'm used to, but at the same time I feel really lucky I can play at all.

I'll try to get around to blogging about worlds soon, but we'll see.

Hopefully see a bunch of you next weekend. :)

shit, I thought the madness you were going to report on was madness of a completely different sort. Sad to hear that something happened to you, but glad to hear you're home safe and sound. Wish I could be at Funtastiks to hang out :-(

Hi Ken,

I can't wait to read your right up, mostly because Andrew posting that he was glad that the doctors were there to save you.

I hope that everything is ok. I also hope that you are ok, of course physically, but more importantly mentally.

Take care of yourself, and expect some one-shots from us out here soon...

Ken, I got the news from Ted while having a phone convo with him this afternoon. I'm glad that you're okay.

I'll treat you to a beer at Funtastiks. :) See you there!

News:

1. I've finally set up internet at home, so I can post on modified again.
2. My legs aren't feeling that great these days. I was able to play a couple days this week, but my muscles aren't used to it, and I think some are overcompensating in weird ways. I should be able to play at Funtastiks, but I need to be real careful not to go too hard. I'll explain my injuries in greater detail later.
3. I'm going to Funtastiks tomorrow night. It will only be my 2nd Funtastiks ever... it's weird to think that the last one I went to was 7 years ago. My parts on the old video "Overground" are mostly from that tourney. I think it's cool I'm still playing 7 years later.

I'll try and blog about Worlds at some point.

Just wanted to let everybody know I made it back safely to DC. Funtastiks was an amazing time. It was great to see a bunch of old friends and play footbag. I wish every weekend could be like this. Big thank you to Joe and Brenda Solonoski for hosting the tournament. Expect a big write-up of my time in Harrisburg soon.

Edit: Here's a quick blast from the past that I found on my computer:

Work and life have been hectic lately, but that doesn't fully explain why I haven't blogged about Worlds. The truth is, at Worlds I had a near-death experience which has changed my outlook on life (I am still mentally processing it). The short version of events is that I fell down 5 rows of bleachers, and I miraculously did not break anything. Don't get me wrong, it was a serious injury. I had trouble walking for a few days, and I was unable to play footbag for almost 2 weeks after it. I could have easily broken my neck/ribs/leg/etc, or had internal bleeding, but instead I only came away with a bone bruise and some tweaked muscles. Much like Sam Jackson's character in Pulp Fiction, I cannot walk away from this incident without perceiving a miracle. Unlike Sam Jackson, I am unsure of what to do about it (I am not going to walk the earth like Cain from Kung-Fu). I do know that I don't want to waste this opportunity. Its very easy for us to use routine as a crutch to help us muddle through life, and not stop and reflect on what we are doing or where we are going. I feel like my accident was a slap to wake me up, and I should take advantage of it. For now, I'm taking that to mean that I will try to be a more positive person. At Worlds I hung out a lot with Caroline Birch from Australia, and she really inspired me with her relentless positivity. I'm going to try that out, and see if I can make it a habit.

In that context, it is difficult to blog about Worlds in the way I normally would have. I think for now I will just say that it was the worst-run tournament I have been to, which is disappointing considering it was Worlds and it was expensive.

Given the fact that I had a scary, near-death accident and that Worlds was run so badly, people have asked me if I regret having gone. I have always answered without any hesitation: I am glad I went to Worlds in Prague. I got to see a lot of old friends, and I got to strengthen other friendships. Shredwise, I played a total of less than 4 hours, which is a little sad, but it was beyond my control. My routine in qualifications was one of my best ever at Worlds, and my routine in semis (the day after my accident) was one of the proudest moments I've had in footbag. Literally every trick hurt, but I pushed my way through 2 minutes of routine, hit my final trick, and bowed to the audience. As for the accident, it was scary as hell, but I'm thinking I may look back on it one day as the most positive thing that happened to me that week. I've got some funny stories and experiences from Worlds that I may get to later, but I think I'll probably blog about Funtastiks before I do Worlds.

The accident happened pretty much like this:

Tuukka: "Ken, guess who is in your semipool"
Ken: "Oh no, it happened again!"

5 mins later Ken is still feeling dizzy about his pool and he loses his balance..

So after that I felt it was my fault, so I decided to drop a lot in my routine so Ken could finally beat me. Now the curse is broken. But the price was pretty high. Next year we meet again in semis, prepare yourself mentally and try to avoid stairs etc.

 Tuukka nailed it on the head. But yeah, I'll try not to stress out as much next year when we meet in semifinals again.
Asmus: Thank you for your nice compliment. I also hope that next time we get more of a chance to talk and play footbag.

Two pieces of big news since my last entry.

1. Vince was able to lock down a location for East Coasts! They're going to be in Maryland the weekend of September 27-28. That means that Vince, Age and I have our work cut out, since we only have 3 weeks to set the whole thing up. We're off to a good start though: planetfootbag is kicking us some clothes, Bruce Dole is making trophies (he did the beautiful NYFA ones), and Waylon, Matt Cross, and Jay Boychuk are making us footbags. We're still looking for more sponsors, so if you can make us a prize bag let me know.

2. I got an email from Dan Shedd, a footbagger who used to play in Seattle with Justin and Sam Potter, saying that he just moved to DC for law school. He literally goes to school like 6 blocks from where I live, so I'm hoping we'll get in regular sessions on weeknights. I met him yesterday and we had a nice 45 minute session outside. Hopefully he'll come out again tonight to meet Age and Vince and get in some more kicking. I'm very excited to have a new player in the club.

I feel like I'm healing well. My abdominal muscles on my left feel strong. I could probably start doing paradox tricks again, but I'm in no rush to do so, so may as well give it more rest and more time to heal. My right knee still feels weird when I do whirls, so I'm laying off whirls on that side. I'm also using a lot fewer sets than I normally do, and relying more on my downtime game. It's a nice change of pace. I have this coming Monday off work, so hopefully I'll blog about Worlds or Funtastiks then.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I too am amazed that I am recovering so quickly.

One of the perqs of my gov't job is that I get every other Monday off from work. This is my first off day, and I'm really enjoying it. Mostly just took care of a lot of errands, but beyond that it was nice to have some time to myself. It's also cool that I have a 4 day week. I'm gonna go play some footbag in a bit, but I figured I'd blog about Funtastiks before it fades from memory.

Prelude:

The week leading up to Funtastiks I got in a couple solo sessions where I tested the limits of my injury. I found that toe tiltless and bops didn't hurt at all, but pdx tricks were off-limits. My right knee still hurts, so whirls and any rigorous knee tricks were also off limits. Still, the fact that I was able to play at all made me happy, and I could still do some cool stuff like barflies b2b. I wasn't sure how much I'd be able to play at Funtastiks, but I recently found an Amy Winehouse song I really liked, so I figured I'd do a routine to it, even if I only spent 2 sessions planning it out and practicing it. I think I had 2 solo sessions before Funtastiks, and after the second one my legs felt weird, so I decided to lay off until the tourney.

Friday:
Had trouble focusing at work, as I always do right before a tourney. My boss let me go an hour early, so I was able to get out to Maryland pretty early. Hung out with Adrienne for the afternoon, then killed time at her place as we waited to see what Vince's plans were. We played a few games of Wii bowling, and I talked a lot of NBA stats with her dad. Finally convinced Vince to drive up with us that night. I think I slept in the car ride? Anyway, we arrived there in what seemed to be no time. I walked into the hotel, and right past the lobby there was a small room where people were playing footbag. I thought it was super cool that they rented out a shred room each night. Knowing footbaggers, we would have played in a garage or in a hallway, but having a proper room felt much classier. I go into the room and say some hellos. One guy I never met before comes up to me, and before he says anything, I just KNOW he's going to guess I am somebody else. Sure enough, he introduces himself as Dan, and then proceeds to ask me if I'm... Manu 8O  I am in such a state of complete shock, that I don't even have any fun with it. I just laugh real hard and introduce myself. I was just so thrilled to have a footbagger meet me and not guess that I am Tu/Tuan/Erik Chan(g). Manu! Too good.

I don't think I even touched a footbag that night. I go to bed, and the next morning feel well-rested and ready.

Saturday

We get to the site early, and I just mosey around watching net players warm up. I'm feeling antsy, so I decide to warm up Vince and Aintno in net, by teaming up with Flash. I find that doing basic net kicks doesn't hurt at all, so I get the idea to compete in intermediate doubles net. I figure that the worst that can happen is that I get "net legs," and can't compete well in freestyle the next day, but given that I was already injured and didn't have a strong routine planned, I didn't really care. I ask around for a while, and finally Ken David of NYFA agrees to register with me. He plays in modded g-Units, and had never played net before. Meanwhile, I played in my walking shoes, and hadn't competed in net since the year 2000. I liked our chances. 8)

We did some warming up, and it was soon pretty clear that our best hope would be to forget about setting each other up, and instead either just hit the bag back directly over the net, or try and set it in the air in general and run the hell out of the way. We were seeded at the very bottom of intermediate doubles, and our first match was against Ted Fritch (intermediate doubles champ of the world) and Phil N. We lost in straight sets, but we got a few points. Despite the loss, I had a lot of fun, since Ken kept cracking jokes throughout. Ted would give us advice like "be more fluid with your sets" and Ken would respond: "What's that? Pee more fluid during sex?"
Our next match was against Danny Bodkin and Julian Soloski. We lost the first game, but it was closer. In the second game, we started to click a bit more, and ended up winning it! My goal was to win at least one game, but now I thought it was a real possibility that we could win a match. In the third game, we served well and pulled off the win! 8O Yeah Team Ken! Our next match was against the Bowin Bros from Jersey, and beat them in straight sets. So that's how we went from being the lowest seed in the tourney, to advancing to semi-finals.

By the time semis happened, Ken and I weren't in the best physical shape. I kept missing right inside kicks, and instead had the netbag hit my right ankle. It got to be pretty explosive pain. Meanwhile, playing in freestyle shoes caught up with Ken. Towards the end it was painful just to kick the bag. In semis we faced Jack Lentz and Mark Something, and lost in straight sets. I did get a spike in though, so that was a moral victory. In the consolation bronze medal match we faced Dan the Man (the guy who thought I was Manu) and Adrienne. The only highlights were Ken's jokes about his foot about to fall off, and one serve by Adrienne that I returned with a flying clipper kick. We got our asses handed to us, but I still was proud that we took 4th place in net. Go NYFA freestyle!

At some point I left the site with Jon Schneider in order to check out some chili-tasting fare. It was rad, there were like 15-20 booths along the main street, and you could go up to them and pay a quarter to get a solo-cup sized sample of their chili. It reminded me of the Guatemalan insanity pepper episode of the Simpsons. So who better to do it with than Jon? Some of the chilis tasted kinda ketchup-y, but some were quite good. It was nice to enjoy a little bit of smalltown USA street festival fun.

Saturday night we went to the brewery for dinner. I had a really nice stout which was from a cask, and had a very rich flavor. Back at the hotel people played some footbag, but the game that dominated people's attention was Duel! Shockingly, I can't find any YouTube vids of it, but in essence it's a game that combines indian wrestling with tug of war. There are two bases and a rope. At the count of 3, each competitor grabs as much rope as they can, and then they proceed to try and make the other person fall off their base. If you let go of the rope, you also lose. So the whole idea is that you can give and take slack with the rope, so you shouldn't pull too hard, because the other person can release slack, etc. It's pretty fun. I spent most of the night icing the swelling net welt on my right ankle, and watching people play duel.

Next: Sunday
