hey bob what day did you want to play in ct?? and pm the zip code you'll be in.

you should try some stepping out of whirls and drifters. maybe atomic out of dlo.

chyeah.

edit- whoops.

here's "the list"

pixie butterfly > ripwalk > DLO
ripwalk > drifter > pdx mirage
drifter > spinning clipper > whirl
spinning clipper > stepping ss legover > pixie ss legover
stepping ss legover > smear > paradon
smear > pixie ss mirage > toe set whirl
pixie ss mirage > pixie legover > pixie legover > pixie ss mirage
pixie legover > atomic mirage
atomic mirage > butterfly > blur
blur > pixie ss clipper > diving clipper
pixie ss clipper > blur > eggbeater
ripwalk > ripwalk > blur
pixie butterfly > DLO > pixie butterfly > drifter
whirl > spinning clipper > stepping mirage
spinning legover > smear
barrage > toe set drifter
ripwalk > stepping butterfly > repeat
stepping ss legover > pixie ss butterfly > ripwalk > repeat
spinning pdx mirage > pixie buttefly

yo pete, I think this is a case of "eyes bigger than stomach" or "biting off more than I can chew".. In other words, my nice quiet trip is suddenly kinda jammed and I think you'd be making a long drive for a short hang out. I think I'll have to catch you when I come up to Boston next.

-------
worked on those combos on Saturday and Sunday this weekend. What a great workout, and so different from what I've been doing. I was SORE both days (and that hasn't happened in awhile). I feel like such an idiot that it took me this long to try this method of training (previous two methods were "shred" and "trick practice").

I would highly recommend to any player that's trying to learn this game to do butterfly > infinity or butterfly > pdx mirage before every trick you try. It's so much harder than just starting out to clipper or toe stall, and it's so much more like mid-run feeling. Plus it works basic bops which never hurts.

Anyhow, highlights:
- I've always hated my pdx mirages. They've been kind of straight legged, and totally down time. I instead wanted that bent leg, dex at the peak (or just after) faster type of dex. So I got good at that this weekend. Will help with drifter and DLO variations I believe.

- Over 2 days, I worked on every combo from the initial list (didn't get to Ian's additions yet, or to Pete's either).

- Of everything on the list, I only hit like 3-4 combos on the first try, so it seems like I picked things appropriately difficult.

- Of all of them, I hit about 80% on strong side, and about 50% on both sides, and a couple BSOS. There were 3-4 combos I couldn't hit on either side.

- lack of good balance, and incorrect foot work, on weak stepping set doomed many weakside links. But now I know (watched it slo mo on vid tape after).

- happily, will be able to hit weak egg beater soon.

- happily, will be able to hit weak barrage soon too. strong one was good and finally deep (used to be pretty 'the')

- happily, I think I'm actually finally going to be someone that can whirl. it always hurt, but i figured it out and it works now, good dex too.

- interestingly, I think my weak spin (though less consistent) is actually my natural spin direction. It's much faster, better balance, better spotting.

- I think most of all, it was really eye opening to see how much trouble I had with these combos. I mean, they're not really difficult combos, and ahead of time I would have said "yeah, I can hit those". I could, for the most part, but I really had to work it to be able to do it. I think this is why my shred is not where I want it to be. Free flowing freestyle, and single trick practice, while worthwhile, have not improved my game like I think this new style of practice will. Example, I learned more about weakside stepping set in the last 2 days than I have in the past year.

ugh, what a frustrating session last night. I am stressed awaiting job interview decision - really stressed. So my mood is just generally pretty chippy and pissy. So I get home to shred and my neighbor (who decided to have an afternoon cocktail, therefore had his talkers on) decides he wants to gab with me. So he's like sitting there watching me shred and talking, talking, talking... Not getting the hint that shred and talking don't really mix. Then, the kids were all about daddy last night, so Meg kept bringing them into the barn. And they like to pretend they can hacky, so I kept having to stop. So I basically worked up a really good sweat but only got to practice about 10 combos from my list. I still think this is a good practice method, but it wasn't a great example last night.

edit: Oh, I forgot to mention that on Friday night I played a 9-hole "par 3" course. A "chip and putt" course. The greens are VERY slow, and holes are generally about 80-100 yards. But it's really good practice for a beginning golfer - it's all short game which is about 75% of the shots on a real course. I did pretty well. 7 over for the 9 holes, and it was really only 2 holes that messed me up (hit 6's on 2 holes, but otherwise hit a bunch of pars and 4's). So that was fun.

well, one day until I leave for my vacation back in my home town of Marlborough CT. Fortunately, Emi is over the cold she's been battling. Unfortunately, Keegan and Megan have it now. Fortunately, I don't have any symptoms yet, and have avoided the last 4-5 colds that have come through our house (Zycam + washing hands OCD style = less colds). Unfortunately, I probably just jinxed myself and will be sick just in time to ruin my vacation (a vacation that I freaking neeeeeeeeeeeeeed). We'll see how it goes.

shredded last night. 4th day in a row + being 32 years old = tired daddy. But it was alright. I got a few combos on both sides that were previously only strong side. And I hit a couple more bsos. I think I'll stick with this method for awhile and see how it goes. I'm shredding with the CT guys on Friday so we'll see if I am shreddy or if I'm droppy (like I usually am when I've been in practice mode for awhile). If I'm shreddy, that will convince me to stick with this method.

been doing my morning workout routine more often these days. Was previously doing 2-3 days per week. Am currently doing 3-4 days per week. I can do pushups like a pro now. Situps, leg lifts, bench press, arm curls, chin ups, planks, tri pods. All sorts of fun agonizing exercises. I mix them up pretty randomly. I weighed in the other day at 200 - considering increased muscle mass, increased calory intake, and some beers-to-numb-the-job-stress... I'm happy with that. I think I'll level down to about 195 when it's all said and done.

Good news: I'm getting a job offer from Harleysville Insurance. Position is a "platform manager" position. Basically, 50% project manager, 50% strategic/relationship builder/understanding the user/general business problem solving. So I'd be excited about the position because I can utilize my versatile background/skills.

Worry: Original numbers talk months ago had me and the guy who'd be hiring me (who I know from past job) on 2 different pages. Different by about $20K. So I'm very concerned about what the end number is at this stage.

Potentially good: He's already stuck his neck out fighting to have me on board, so it's in his best interest to make the deal happen.

Not sure how next steps will proceed, but hopefully I'll have some feel before I go on vacation tomorrow! I'll be a much nicer person if things are in good order.

This is a good news / bad news post.

Good:
Vacation to CT was awesome. Kids loved it, lake was great, aquarium was so fun, seeing all my old friends was a blast, weather was great, cottage was nice. Everything was just perfect.

Also, kicked with Tim while there. Played pretty nicely, and I think it's partially due to the new way that I'm practicing. Also, I hit a really nice flurry. Haven't hit that (or tried it) in a long time. I think it's actually a mid runnable trick with a little work.

Had a good practice yesterday. Continued working on the combos above and am having more weakside and bothsides success. Another couple practices and I'll brainstorm a different list just to keep it fresh and pushing my learning curve.

Keegan has his first day of pre-school today. It's only 3 days per week, 2.5 hours each. Mostly playing and arts and crafts etc. this year. But also, they begin to learn how to follow rules and behave in a group. They strengthen learning of letters and numbers etc too. I think if he can get over missing mommy and being in an unfamiliar environment (he's very shy at first) it will be really great for him. We got him spider man back pack, and some adidas shell toes for his first day. Really cute.

Bad:
Harleysville job offer seems as though it is going to fucking fall through. The CIO is as fickle as they come, and he's back to wanting a technical guru for the role. Which makes no sense since none of the role involves technical work - just managing employees that do the technical side. Also makes no sense since the largest portion of the role is strategic/business side. Most people consider teaching a technical guy to do the strategic to be more difficult than teaching someone like me to understand company-specific technologies. I just need to understand limitations, possibilities, not program. Sigh...... We'll see. My buddy that I'd be working for is still fighting for me.

Of my 3 employees at current position, 2 are women with major life stuff going on right now. 1 had a baby that has serious health conditions (will be mentally disabled.. not sure how disabled yet though) so she's in and out of the office etc. The other purposely got pregnant even though she and her boyfriend (now husband after shotgun wedding) can't afford it and already have 2 older kids from separate circumstances. As luck has it, she got pregnant with twins and is a total emotional mess, and physically in pain too. So her performance is slipping BIG TIME, and her attitude is in the shitter. Fucking pisses me off.

(sorry for miss spellings in this next section) And, last night, my mom called to tell me she has uteran cancer. Next week she's getting a histerectomy. My mother is very overweight (like 250-300 lbs overweight) so surgery is high risk for her. Recovery afterwards will also be very difficult. Best case scenario is that removal of uterus and ovaries will 100% remove the cancer, so she's sore for a few weeks and then business as usual. Other scenarios are that the cancer has spread and she'd need chemo therapy and/or other therapies. So, I'm extremely bummed, worried, stressed, sad about this whole thing.

So, if you add all these shitty things together, my mood is pretty fucking sour.

Hey Bob, sorry to hear about your rough times. I hope everything works out. Career question - if the CIO is fickle on who he wants to fill the role, does that change your expectation of the work environment? Would you be working directly under him? Just in my (limited) experience it is maddening when your boss can never consistently spell out expectations for you. IMO its more important to find the right organization than the right set of duties.

I am sorry to hear that you are going through such horrible times. Perhaps this may be a bad time to be starting a new job though. Your mother is very nice. I am sorry that she is going through such an awful experience.

Hey guys, thanks for checking in and the kind words. Much appreciated.

Nathan, regarding fickle CIO and choosing an organization etc. I agree, I've definitely been taking the selective, targeted approach to job hunting. No monster.com etc. Just referrals, and specific company targeting. Harleysville is known as a very good company, and the VP I'd be working for is basically my mirror. That is, he's similarly a jack of many trades, good communicator etc. But his primary background is technical, whereas mine is business/strategic. The biggest appeal of the position is to hang onto his coat tails and get mentoring etc.

On that Harleysville note, their HR emailed me today for additional interviews with the executive team. Not sure what that means, but it's another step, so that's good I guess. I do know that the executive team is sometimes called in at this company when salary is above a certain point (and I'm above that point). Or, it could just be more gut checks etc.

------

Footbag, and the coach. Footbag and my namesake saved me yesterday. My stress about my mother and other were pretty high as noted above. So I kicked after work and had a good practice. I'm on my 3rd time through my list of combos now, and am getting more and more combos that I can hit both sides or bsos etc. So it's a fun way to go. Pretty soon I'll make a different list of combos to keep things fun.

Then, after kids were in bed, went to the neighbor's house and relaxed a different way. That really helped. Watched an amazing tennis match between the Williams sisters. Went to bed and slept well.

-----
My morning workouts have changed a bit too. First, they're more often as I noted before. Second, my method of working many muscle groups each time was no longer ripping my muscles up. So now, I focus on a muscle group per session. That really makes me sore and should help me reach the next place.

It's been nearly a year since my workout / weight loss plan began. I'm still holding at my original goal weight. Good stuff.

oh my godddddddd, my entire upper body is sore. I've made it through the first week of changing my workouts to focus on muscle groups, and boy is it working. My abs are sore, my chest is sore, my arms are sore. That's a good sign. Couple days off and do it again next week.

Harleysville. So, I have a teense more detail on what the additional interviews are for. They're for a similar but slightly different position. More responsibilities, more business side, but still involved in the technical. Still reporting to my buddy. I think "more responsibilities" indicates I made a good impression? I'm still waiting for full job description, but he did note that I'd have far more interaction with the marketing team (which is good since I enjoy marketing strategy, and have an MBA focus in that discipline). We shall see.

My cell phone sucks. Had one a year ago that was good, but not sturdy. So I traded down to a simpler model because all I need is the basics. It was ok, but battery always died extremely quickly (less than a day). So I brought it back and they replaced it with same model. This one, no one can hear me talk when I call them. So I have to replace it again. Pain in the ass considering this is the phone that people call for interviews etc.

Mood about my mom is improving. I'm in the mindset of "it will work out, she'll be fine" and I'm sticking with that until forced to rethink for any reason. I'm glad we're going up to spend time with her this weekend. It will be a tiring trip, but it's definitely the right thing to do. She's someone that never takes anything from anyone, never wants people to go out of their way for her... and when I asked if she wanted us to visit, without hesitation she said "Yes, please come that would really make me feel great". It's funny how you grow up as a good kid, turn into an asshole teenager/young 20's, and then return to being a good kid again.

I'm researching dogs. I think this spring we'll get a companion for Piggy. For one, he's awesome and I want him to help me train the next dog. Also, Piggy is (SADLY) getting on in years. He's 9+ years old which is elderly for a 85 pound black lab. He's very healthy, so we're hoping he lives for many more years, but we have to plan for it anyways. Part of me just wants to get another lab. But I don't know if we have the time/energy to train and clean up piles of dog hair. So maybe something smaller. Beagle? Maybe some poodle mix (labradoodle etc.)?

I had a labrador retriever growing up, and she was big for a lab, about 95 lbs or so. Anyways, she lived to be about 13 or 14, and even then she didn't die. My folks had her put down because her one leg got all fucked up arthritis style and she couldn't walk anymore. So, long live Piggy.

And I'm sadly unavailable this weekend. College work that I may or may not do and prior obligations. Lame. Tell your mom that a complete stranger from the internet wishes her well.

well, no shred with steel city guys, though their football team did kick ass this weekend (so did Philly!). Going to see my mom was the right thing to do, she was happily distracted all weekend and the kids were great considering the long trip. Played a lot of pool with my dad on his newish pool table. And otherwise just chilled with wife/kids/parents. Tired now. Gonna chill with some beers tonight, and get back into routine tomorrow.

edit: oh yeah, forgot to mention my cousins cochlear implant was turned on recently. The brain needs to learn what to do with the impulses, but it's happening aready. For example, the other day he was in the living room and was like "whats that????". He was reacting to the washing machine 3 rooms away changing from rinse to spin cycle. Similar experiences in the car - he never new the tires on the road made noise. Now he does. Just tons of input. He'll be a new man. So far things are going great.

I'm really nervous about my mom's surgery tomorrow. I've never been an "I love you" son (interestingly though, I'm very much an "I love you" husband and father) for various reasons not worth going into here. But I did tell my mom I loved her tonight. I understand this is a "routine" surgery that normally takes care of the cancer, but it's still not 100%.

Besides worrying last night, I did shred after work. Still working through my combos and still happy with what I'm learning from that type of practice. Various components improve faster for me (it seems) when I'm forced to do them in rhythm of a run (because I start with 2 butterflies or butterfly > pdx mirage to simulate being mid run).

Like, I can sort of do quantum set now. Strong side quantum butterfly is better than 50%, and last night I hit weakside quantum butterfly for the first couple times ever. Also hit strong side quantum ss mirage. So that's cool.

To warm up, I do swirls, osis, infinities, pdx mirage, atomic sets (just atomic > toe repeat), pixie sets (pixie > toe repeat), and whatever else pops into my mind. Now quantum set (quantum > toe > op toe repeat) is part of it too.

I think I'll brainstorm a different list of combos today. Not that I've mastered the previous list, but it will keep it fresh. Plus, my brainstorms will surely repeat similar concepts so it will build on what I've been doing and keep it fun.

Mom goes into surgery at 11 a.m. She's at the hospital already right now. Will know results by end of business today.

edit: I'm also still doing a nice job of my morning workouts. The new 'focus on one muscle group per workout' method is way better. I'm so beat after just two sets right now (though it is 2 sets of like 7 exercises) and I was never beat after previous workout style. I think within just a few weeks I'll see some positive results in terms of improved tone etc.

Yay! Mom made it out of surgery OK and the surgeon was very happy with how everything went. He also felt that the cancer was contained and that he got it all out (i.e. no chemo would be needed if he's right) - testing by the pathologist over the coming days will prove that out.

ALSO, this doctor is the first doctor to mandate that my mom loses weight. History: she's like 300 punds overweight. Literally. I tried to have an intervention. Didn't work. I tried to contact her doctors to get them to scare her into it. They wouldn't do it (not "ethical"). She's going to kill herself if she doesn't lose weight. Well, this doctor stepped up to the plate and said it has to happen and he has multiple avenues to pursue to get there (including his strong recommendation of a gastric bypass). This is better news than the rest of it almost!

Shredded last night.

Symple swirl practice has improved regular style swirls. Basically, I think of a regular swirl as symple, but I just don't execute the jump or the plant - but the rhythm and bounce of it all is very similar.

Weak eggbeater is so hard for me. I look like a total newb when I work on it.

Practicing sets all by themselves is useful.

Quantum is more natural for me than atomic. I'd like to have both be natural, but I guess quantum isn't a bad thing to have in your pocket. It's also easily both sided which is good (surprising) news for me. Hit a bunch more quantum butterflies on both sides. Will switch to toe blur now because I think tricks ending in mirage/pdx mirage motion require a better set than bailing to butterfly, therefore this is better practice for future tricks.

Stepping set on weakside is starting to pop as nicely as strong side. It's all about getting the setting foot back on the ground quickly, and right underneath you (not way behind you or way to the side).

I'm bored with my list of tricks and I've hit all of them on at least one side, and most of them both sides, and about 1/3 of them bsos. So I'll generate a new list today.

---
Did my arms workout today. Basically, Tuesdays I do abs, Wednesday I do chest, Thursday I do arms. Monday and Friday are rest days. Weekends are filled with all sorts of natural exercise (mowing, building, playing with kids, longer footbag sessions, golf, swimming etc. Often, all of these things in the same weekend).

---
2nd golf lesson is Saturday morning. I'll probably hit the driving range Friday night too.
