Ollie's Footblog

Post by Blue_turnip »

I have decided to start this blog because for the first time in over two years I am going to be playing footbag.

Simplifying a long story of emotional anxiety:
Two years ago I stopped playing footbag because of knee pains. These pains have been problematic in all physical activities, not just footbag. After moving back to Australia early this year I decided to fix the problem once and for all. I visited a GP and was referred to an orthopedic surgeon. I made the booking, and three months later visited the dude. He referred me to a physio. Last week I went to the physio (which was actually two guys) and they spent ages analysing the problem, which was great. I went again yesterday and they told me they want me to play footbag every second day, so I went and borrowed a footbag from Janis at the Melbourne uni footbag barbeque yesterday (shoutout to Janis for the lend!).

I've more than learnt my lesson and I'm going to take this transition into footbag playing very slowly. I've waited so long that spending the rest of the year just drilling basics in short footbag sessions is easy to cope with. Once my knees prove their worth, I will gradually turn up the heat and hopefully grow to dominate the Australian scene :o :!:

Today I played footbag for half an hour (half an hour is the restriction the physios have told me to abide by). I did some kicks, inside stalls, toe stalls, clippers and a couple legovers. I'm still to plan my training sessions to get the most out of the 30 minutes.

I was just reading a thread in the getting started forum about various builds and footbag. Someone mentioned something about playing 'smart' and I so thoroughly agree.

These 30 minute sessions should encourage me to play smart. When I was a new footbagger in 2004 I had many discipline issues. I was too impatient to drill and just wanted to see how many times I could hit ripwalk consecutively. I'm going to drill lots, and strategically plan drills that will cater to my weaknesses (eg. today I came up with ss inside>ss toe>op toe> repeat to address some basic balancing issues).

First up on the agenda for the next couple months will be:

-General Kicking (also toe kicks, which i never really mastered)
-Toe delays/sets (ensuring I delay the bag at optimal height and horizontal distance from my body)
-Inside delays and clippers (a lot of work must be done here, specifically on regaining ankle flex and, performing clippers properly my clipper>op clipper> repeat is horrible!)
-ATWs and legovers
-Mirages
-Butterflies butterflies butterflies and butterflies

That is all. If anyone can suggest helpful drills or exercises that would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to update this blog every couple sessions, but will keep it entertaining with anecdotes and other interesting remarks.

Awesome stuff, glad to hear you are taking it slowly. I'm going to try to take it slow too. Hopefully you can come along to the weekly kicks at uni when you recover.

How did your knees feel after the 30min session?

They felt pretty good!

Today I had session #2:

I did similar stuff, this time focusing a bit more on ss inside>ss toe > repeat with my left leg because I'm a bit unco and unbalanced.

I also did a fair bit of just doing an inside delay and then slowly lifting and lowering that leg to develop muscle strength. the inside side of my knees feel a bit tender when doing clippers and insides probably because there just is no muscle strength there, so that exercise should help.

The last few weeks I've been playing every 2 or 3 days and doing loads of hamstring stretches. My flexibility has improved and my strength in my delay leg has been slowly improving.

Today I had my first physio visit in 3 weeks and got prescribed an exercise and a massage that will help get my support leg in shape. The massage results were unbelievable. I just rub a muscle for a few minutes and there's no pain when I sink down to delay. Hopefully the combo of exercise and massaging will help eventually get my legs up to playing level. Hitting up the physio again this friday for the next installment of exercises.

In terms of what I've been doing in actual footbag not that much has changed, but I have refined what I'm working on at the moment a bit more. Inside drills. My legs aren't strong enough yet to actually do consecutive insides without pain coming on but I am just doing inside delays and lowering and raising the delay leg repetitively. ss inside>ss toe is really good because it isn't stressful. It builds coordination and strength in muscles. I also do consecutive toe delays. I managed to do 49 today in unshreddable shoes beating my previous PB of 34.

Yesterday I ordered Quantum03s! Yay. Got black size 11. I also grabbed an A910 regular and a footfighter while I was at it. I can't wait for the stuff to arrive. They should arrive in time for the Melbourne footbag Jam which I will hopefully be doing a really basic routine for. I'll get smoked but I really really want to do this routine. It will be the first footbag event I'll have attended since February 2004 so I'm really excited.

Quantums and abshire regular arrived in mail on tuesday. Exciting.

I played at melbourne uni footbag club today. I hit blurry whirl which, as far as I can recall I havn't hit before. I jeans too, lol.

My knee's are feeling better except for my support leg when I sink in clippers and stuff. I should get taped up tomorrow at the physio which will help it.

I plan on nailing my clipper and butterfly technique. Thats like my current goal.

I broke my consecutive kick record recently - got like over 300 (my previous best was like 273 from back in 2004).

My consistency sucks balls. I'm barely tiltless, its a shame.

Met up with some MFCers today at fed square. Managed to do 22 consec legovers, beating my goal of 20. Hit pdx drifter as well as well as a few runs that were longer than like my standard couple contacts.

I've hurt a muscle at the very top of my right leg, but its giving me the opportunity to work on some flipside dexterities.

Hey man, it was good to meet you yesterday. You have a lot of potential if you can stay injury free.

Thanks, dan!

Today we had a good shred at fed square. Big crowd showed up too! I was first to rock up, and as I was putting on my quantums the familiar face of Lynton Stephens rocked up. Eventually we had dan, Ryan, Janis, Leon, Lynton, a couple 12 year old kids and a special guest: Kenzo from Japan.

I had some shint splints today which were bad (god i feel like a hypochondriac) and the muscle in my right leg isn't too good. Good news is that my knees are feeling pretty good and I'm defs on my way to a good recovery.

Other good news is that some nice runs and moves were hit today. Hit 22 butterflies (I just realised thats how many legovers i hit last week). Hit paradox torque. Hit flipside datw in-out (first double dex on left leg). To top it off I hit a 6-add: fairy symp swirling osis, lol!

It was a great day though thanks pretty much to the nice crowd, especially Kenzo.

of course! I love that trick. I hit it a little while ago. I'm not ready for it though, it's just a pie in the sky trick for me, but it's a good one

Melbourne Footbag Jam

Post by Blue_turnip »

The last few days I have spent at the Melbourne Footbag Jam, hosted by the Melbourne uni footbag club. It has been a great experience. Loads of people came along and it was fun. My legs are dead now though.

I'm tired and can't be bothered writing much, which is standard so I'll just quickly run through it. Friday was 'warmup' day, where much footbag was played and visitors arrived. We also watched "Mystic Ball", some film about Chinlone. It was fairly epic.

The next day (sat) was Competition, which consisted of routines, sick 3, sick 1 and foursquare. I managed to place third with the routine I decided on on thursday. "Woot" is the only word that really comes to mind. Got a Melbourne uni footbag club footbag with the event and placing written on it. Nice memorabilia. We had a barbeque and that was delicious. Leon forgot the sauce but it made it so much better when Caroline came back from the store with some.

Today we played Net and I was quite a fail at it. I blame the sun and my lack of flexibility. It was fun shred. I hit schmoe for the first time and then BSOS in the same string as stepping legover BSOS. I also hit my first quantum moves: quantum butterfly both sides and toe blur (almost both sides but I was getting shin splints after trying flipside a bit so i thought I should stop).

Dan hit nemesis: that was like :O. We jumped around a bit and it was quite happy. It was caught on film as well. Analysed and it has been deemed clean.

I should list out the guests. I kind of don't want to cos I'll forget someone and then I'll feel bad.:

-Max from France
-girlfriend of Max (Sorry! forgot name)
-Jeremy O'wheel (tasmania represent, yo)
-Jamie from Bendigo.
-Caroline from Canberra
-Ian from Sydney + girlfriend (yeah I'm really bad with these names, lol)
-Might as well throw Lynton in here cos he's quite a novelty.

Pretty much all of the Melbourne crew came along (Dan, Janis, Leon, Andrew, newcomer Will, and myself).

I'm sure someone else will post shizzle in their blogs so I cbf talking about the event anymore kthx bye.
