still gimping it up with my black blue and yellow toe. its feeling better, by that i mean it doesn't throb in pain while i'm just laying down, but it does still hurt when i try and move it around.
so to fill my time i've picked up my bass again. i got it like freshmen year of highschool, played it for a month then put it down and realy havent touched it since.
i like playing it, i always have, i just am super lazy about learning how to play it right. i think with all this time on my hands now though due to my toe, i'll actually work on my fretboard technique since i know i'm not doing it right.
/shrug.

so yeah, not a whole lot happenin'
toe is still hurtin'. though, i can actually flex it a little bit with out any pain at all. its only when i try and really try and flex my toe(like when footbagging) is when it hurts. other then that when i wear my shoes i have little to no pain walking around.
when i flex my toe up though, my toe doesn't point(its the big toe). its only been like a week since i hurt it, so i think it just needs more time, and it might just be that since i went so long with out moving my toe that my muscles are weak and will bounce back when i'm healed up.
it's just making me sad that all i can do right now is watch videos and not go play
if my toe is still hurtin' by hackrifice, i might have to choke someone.

haha, thanks for that tom
toe is feeling better. a lot better. its no longer blue and black and yellow. its almost normal colors now. it's still kinda swollen though, especially right around the joint where i imagine it broke or got jammed heavy duty.
hoping it's good enough to at least do some kicks with in a few days time. i'm jonesin' bad for some play time
moving into my new place on MONDAY!!!!! can't wait. i'll have to take pictures once liam and i get the place all set up and how we like it, which might take awhile cause we don't plan on having any bit of wall uncovered by posters/banners/awesomeshit.
still gatta talk to the owner about the possibility of buying a ferret. i think if i'm able to, i might jsut get one instead of two like i really want to. i do really want to get two of them, but, i mean, i've never actually owned one, or my own pet for that matter. so i think just getting one to start with is the best idea.

so heres what happened to me during hackrifice, my little weekend long birthday present to myself.
Friday 19/9/08
Woke up to my alarm at 5 am, promptly hit the snooze button and went back to sleep. My litle reprieve is stopped by the alarm going off again at 5:15. Crawled out of bed and made it to the shower. After that I started pulling out clothes that I wanted to pack (didn't do it the night before like I told myself I would, hence the 5am wake up call) and got dressed. Packed my threads, shoes, two books (Walden and Pandora's Star) ipod, and of course, my footbags. Grabbed my smokes and the three jays I rolled last night for my trip (12 hour trip!) with the obvious intention of smoking them all before I got to the border. Told Liam I was ready, then drove off to the bus station.
So everything goes smothely at the station. No hang-ups the tickets, bus was running on time, stoked? ecstatic? quasi-euphoria? yeah, I gues you could say that describes how I was feeling as we rolled out of Minneapolis. So the first is St. Cloud, and the driver takes the exit as prescribed by her route sheet. Oh! almost forgot to mention she was a new driver, unfamiliar with alternate routes to the same destination. So anyways we get maybe, a half-mile down the road, and then we get stuck in this endless line of cars at a dead stop. Not a minute after we stop I see a tow truck turn onto the road headed toward the front of the line. So we're sitting there, I'm thinking someones car might of broke down or something, who knows. So I'm putting my cheek to the glass to try and get a look down the line, thats when I the police lights way off in the distance. Put 2 and 2 together and yep, accident, bad one too. Didn't see it first hand but word was passed down to us that a semi had hit a car at almost dead on. So eventually, after sitting there for a hour or so, driver finally turns us around to get back to the main highway, and one of the passengers gives her directions to the bus station upon request.
So roll into the bus station, I step out for a smoke along with a few others while the driver lets those waiting onto the bus. So we left, after the driver got a new route from the people working at the station because I guess the current one wasn't going to work out or something. We leave and head to back to highway 94. About half hour down the road, one the passengers checks to make sure shes going to his stop in Brainerd, because if she is she was going the wrong way, ugh. We turn around, get back into St. Cloud, driver calls some person at Jefferson Lines to get directions to where we have to go, and we go.
So we get to Brainerd, and thats where the two handicapped people in wheelchairs need to get off. So driver gets out and gets the lift ready, and gets the thing stuck. Didn't take too long before us passengers got crawled out of our chairs to help out. So about a hour goes by, and we just can't get the damn thing to work, it goes down, stores it self, deploys itself, and goes up, but not all the way, theres about a 6 inch gap between the bus and the platform. So I was really starting to get a little aggravated because I was starting to worry about missing my connection to Winnipeg in Fargo. Sparked up jay #1 to mellow myself out a little and take a second look at the whole situation with the lift. Another hour goes by and the handicapped people let us know they were ok with us helping them out of their wheelchairs and off the bus the normal way. So we did, and passed the chairs out of the open door for the lift, and finally, we leave.
The driver calls ahead to tell them to hold the other busses because we're now running late. From chatting with the other passengers during the dead time, I learned there were two others en route to Winnipeg along with myself, Mitch and James(I think). Now we get to Wadena, our last stop before Fargo, where we have to switch busses for some reason. I run and get some burger king because I hadn't eaten yet at all today and it was now a little after 4 in the afternoon, and the jay didn't help with the hunger at all
So we arrive at the Fargo station at about 5 pm, only 4 hours behind the stated arrival time of 1pm. And wouldn't you know it, but the bus the Winnipeg left with out Mitch, James and I.
The guy working there informs that the next bus leaving for Winnipeg is tomorrow at 3pm in the afternoon. Fuck! shit! balls! That meant that my time at Hackrifice was whittled down to less then 24 hours if I waited for that bus. The guys and I talked about it, and I, after serious heavy deliberation, decided that if I couldn't get a ride from someone up to Winnipeg tonight, then I was just going to catch the next bus back home, granted that even if everything went along with no problems I woulda only been there for friday night and saturday only. This is when James tells us that he's the native american world champ in his weightclass for boxing(supposedly) and that he was sure if he called his promoter he could get us a ride up to Winnipeg since James has a fight on Tuesday and needs to get ready for the fight. The deal for giving us the ride up would be that if we couldn't get across the border, we we're on our own, fair enough. The greyhound guy had offered to put us up in hotel rooms for the night, so after we had discusses what we were going to do, we took him up on that and walked over to the place.
3 hours to kill while we wait for the ride to get here from Winnipeg, so the three of us go out to walk about Fargo. We walk to this cool park and found a cool spot to spark up jay #2. So there I am, chatting with two guys I met hours before, appreciating the fact that I have this little story of me smoking up the Native American Boxing World Champ to start hackrifice weekend for me. Finish that up, grab a drink and head back to the hotel. I go back to my room and relax and James and Mitch go out to get a beer, Mitch and I exchanging numbers incase the ride showed up. Watched a little tv, then went for a walk and sparked my last jay up around 10pm(ride didn't leave Winnipeg til about 6ish I guess).
Got back to the room and played a little hack, just stalls, taking it easy since I hadn't played after breaking my toe about a month ago, chilled for a little and then Mitch comes a knockin' and informs me that our ride will be here in the next 15 minutes or so. Yes! after all the nonsense I'm going to make it to Winnipeg, even if it is around 1am when I get there.
We finally get to the border at about 1:45am, we had made a stop for gas and food. Yay, now I get to deal with customs. So they do their thing, search the car, search our stuff, how do you know each other? where are you going? what is the nature of your visit to winnipeg? (that one was fun to answer, i thought i did a alright job of describing the sport to him when he asked 'so a hackey sack tournament?') And then he asks the million dollar question, have I ever been convicted of anything above a misdemeanor.
Now about 3 years ago I had gotten picked up for a DUI (I blew a 1.9 and a 2.0 is automatic jail time). So what it works out to in the end was I plead guilty to the DUI and to reckless driving, with 1 year probation. If after the year of probation was over with out me getting into any more trouble the DUI was to be removed from my record.
Now, Mitch had gotten grilled first, and he got turned away because of a prior DUI, which he informed me was cause to not let you pass as it's a felony in Canada. Then it was my turn to be questioned, and that was the first question I got asked.
So my first thought was to say no. I was told it would be removed from my record, but I wasn't 100% sure on that, and I really did not want to be caught in a lie at that point in time. So I told him honestly the story of my DUI thinking maybe there'd be some small chance he'd let me through since I was upfront about it, even though I didn't think it was on my record.
"Well, even though it was removed from your record I still can't let you pass"
I've never felt my spirit get crushed so totally before, I couldn't even feel anything. I was going to miss out on Hackrifice, my first footbag tournament, which I chose to go to because it coincided with my birthday, and it was because I had told the truth when asked a question. The guy told us that we might still be able to get in if we come back at 7:30am, when the immigration officer gets here, that we would probally be offered a one time deal to pay a 200$ fee to go across the border.
So James and his ride take off as was the deal, and we start walking back down the highway to the US side of things (the time is now 2:30ish - 3ish am). Andrew had called me earlier in the night around 8pm and I told him what was up, so I grabbed my phone to let him know that I just wasn't going to make it, even if I had 200$ to pay the fee, I still wouldn't have a ride up to winnipeg, so I was just going to call it and try and make it to Grand Forks where some of my friends go to school at UND.
No phone service. Mitch let me use his phone since he did get service, I'd just have to be brief due to low batteries. So I relate the recent happenings and my decision to Andrew (again, MUCH thanks for staying up til I figured everything out, i'm sorry I kept you up so late) and pass the phone back.
So here we are, two guys, only met hours before, walking down highway 29 at a rediculous time of night towards the US border. Imagine how sketchy that must look to the border patrol officers. Sure enough we get greeted by a pair of them, one shorter then the other. Immediately I knew the short cop had it in for us as he command, rather loudly, that mitch needs to close his phone and put it on the ground, and we have to keep our hands in sight, no fast movements.
So we get searched again, more thoroughly then previously done to us (understandable seeing as how we musta looked to them). Mitch got the short cop leaving me with the taller one, which I was glad for, I didn't want to bother with the mean one. The tall guy was pretty cool about it after hearing our stories. So half a hour later they declare us fit for entry to the US, but we were planning on just grabbing a cat nap before the officer shows up. Just closed my eyes and got comfortable when the short cop comes back and:
"I just talked with my manager, and I'm sorry guys, but you since you're clear with us you need to move on, you can't stay here"
Now I just wanted to break something. It's a 3 mile walk back to the next exit, we weren't even sure if the gas station there was open 24 hours, its 3 damn AM and its cold out side. So we walk the walk back to the station, and thank god, it was open 24 hours. So since I had decided to just go back to Grand Forks for the weekend and try and salvage the rest of my celebratory weekend, and I had no phone service, I started asking anyone and everyone who came in if I could get a ride to Grand Forks.
No one would accomodate me so now that I had been up for just about a full 24 hours I decided to go set up camp on the south bound side of 29 and try and hitch a ride. Was out there til the sun came up with no luck(duh, its ungodly early, who would pick up a hitchhiker at this time of night) so I headed back to the gas station.
Mitch told me he was going to walk back up to the border to go talk to the immigration officer. Since there are no pay phones in Pembina, and I had no service I went with him to see if I could use a phone and get a buddy to come pick me up. Tried the US side first, I remembered they had a public phone with instructions on how to use it as a pay phone (call the number, hang up, pick up after it stops ringing, make your call) and thought I'd give it a shot. And true to the course of my trip thus far, it didn't work. I asked one of the cops if I could just use one of their phones for less then a 5 minute phone call to get a ride.
"Sorry sir, can't let you do that, security issue"
You gotta be kidding me. First you make me walk 3 miles in the cold at 3:30 in the damn morning, and now you won't even let me use a phone so I can get the hell out of here? What in the fuck is that about.
At this point Mitch and I had said goodbye and parted ways as he was determined to get to Winnipeg to visit his girl friend. I've never felt so depressed, crushed, helpless before. I was all alone, stuck at the border, with no phone to call anyone to get help.
Grabbed my shit, and started walking this piece of highway for the 3rd time. So there I am walking down 29 again, with my thumb up hoping someone will take me anywhere other then here. Then it starts to rain, nothing heavy, but a decent sprinkle to get your clothes wet while you're walking 3 miles, which BLOWS because it was still cold outside. Got about halfway back when someone finally pulled over and let me in. The guy seemed SUPER apprehensive about picking me up, and all he would do for me is take me to the gas station at the next exit, and only because it was raining.
Got back to the station around some time, maybe like 6 or 7, I'm not sure. Got right back to asking around for a ride, and again, turned up nothing. Then I remembered about those crazy things called phone cards. Snagged me one of them suckers and promptly called my friend Jake to see if he could come pick me up. I was told though that around 10am the bus going from winnipeg to fargo would be stopping in and tickets we're only like 25$. So I told him I'd find a ride down or hop on the bus, and I'd be in Grand Forks after noon or so.
Sure enough it shows up, and the guy lets me on in exchange for my bus ticket from Winnipeg to Fargo. On the way down is when the realization that I had blown my bithday present to myself by telling the truth really sank in, I was already so tired, cold, and upset over the past 24 hours that I just broke down and started crying. Had started planning for this trip since late June / early July and all I could do was replay the day in my head and watch as the great tapestry that is my plan come undone one thread at a time right in front of me. So I finally made it into Grand Forks, but Jake still hadn't called me back, and didn't answer my second try (I now had phone service!!!!) so I tried calling my other friends who's numbers I had to see if they could pick me up at the station. No one answered. So I tried calling Liam to see if he could call the people I didn't have the numbers for and have them call me, and he didn't answer. So I found a map of the town and started walking from the very East edge of town, to the West edge of town, where the campus is.
Got about half way when Jake called me and picked me up. So I hang out with Jake and some of the other people I know up at UND, relating my story to those who asked why I was here. Later on Jake says I sure got dealt a shitty hand, but at least it was a good day to be here at his frat with him. They we're going to throw one of their biggest parties of the year so they let me party with them even thought I wasn't a frat member, and they let me drink free because of what I went through during the past 24 hours.
So I had was on like my third wind when we started drinking up for the party at around 6pm, party started at 10. Anyways, it was a fun time. Drank away my sorrows and had some fun trying to hack drunk off my rocker. At least I'd gotten to party it up with you guys on saturday in spirit. Highlight of the party was when the fire alarm went off, because the members had removed every smoke detector in the basement and first floor, cause they had a smoke machine for the party. So they we're going to get slapped with a hefty fine. Anyways, after being up for now 48 hours, and being drunk, I finally passed out around 6am.
Friday 19/9/08
Woke up to my alarm at 5 am, promptly hit the snooze button and went back to sleep. My litle reprieve is stopped by the alarm going off again at 5:15. Crawled out of bed and made it to the shower.

Sunday 21/9/08
Woke up around 8am (thanks to waking up at 5am for work for the past month and a half, I now can no longer sleep in past 9, 10am tops), groaned in complaint against the nauseous stomach (i rarely get headaches during hang overs, i just feel sick) and got dressed.
Jake woke up not too long later and we just kicked back and watched football and baseball til about 1pm when we left for Fargo so I could make my 3pm bus back home. Two of our other friends tag along which I was appreciative of, was still feeling really really down about the entire weekend and having those three around helped pull me out of my funk.
Got to the Fargo station at 2:59pm. We had stopped for food and none of us knew grand forks all that well, except for me because I had been there the most recently, so it took us a while to find it, find it we did. Good thing the bus was a half hour late leaving the station, I was sure I was going to miss it the way my weekend was going.
So we left, and go to Brainerd (which we finally got to after a 45 minute detour just out side of Brainerd), where we pick up the two handicapped people. Oh yeah, so its the same driver from Friday's trip and along with the two handicapped people there was one other was on the bus on Friday. I'll give you a guess as to what happens next.
If you guess the chair lift didn't work again, you are correct. Now Friday I didn't really help out due to reasons stated earlier and I didn't know how the thing worked, but I'll be damned if I'm going to sit by and let this shit happen again. So I go town on the piece of shit (which was suposed to have gotten fixed on saturday) and get the thing working in under half an hour, the great apprecation of the small clique of the Friday-trippers.
So anyways, long story made a smidgeon shorter, I didn't get into the Minneapolis station until 10pm, 2 hours behind schedule, and Liam and called saying I needed to catch a cab home due to 'erroenous circumstances that you'll understand when I explain it to you after you get home'. At first I was pissed, all the crap I go through, and he knew about it, I had called him to post on modi for me when I had gotten to Fargo and was stuck so you guys would know whats going on with me. But then I calmed down when I realized that it was a non-issue in the scope of things. I still had no ride but at least I was in a city that I knew, and had people to call for a ride, which I did.
My mom came to pick me up as she was aware of my happenings the previous two days. So she drops me off at my place and this is where the kicker comes in, the real cherry on the top, just made the entire weekend.... I can't think of words to accurately describe how I feel about it, but here it is:
I walk up the back steps (we live on the top floor of the house) and get to the door, reach for the door knob..... and there is no door knob, wtf? Closer inspection reveals that the door had been forcibly broken open, about a 3 inch wide piece of the door, containing the lock and knob, was gone.
That's right, I came home, after everything else I went through, to find out that my place, the place I live, had gotten robbed while I was away.
Now, thankfully, they didn't take much. They took all our glass ware (including our friends 200$ bong that he let us hold onto as he has no where to put it), about 1500$ in cash that we had in our place, and they also took one other thing. All stuff you wouldn't go to cops about.
Good thing is, we know who did it, we told everyone we knew to keep an eye out for any of our pieces and then we gave a description of the goods since its kind of dry around here, and we're known for always having some(cali med, mmmm), all we're waiting for is proof that he did it, either one of our pieces is spotted, or someone finds out that he's selling our stuff.
So yup, Liam then gave me a couple rolls and packed a fat fat bowl with our last piece, a nice zong.
I wrote this while I was going over the weekend during the peak (my first attempt at poetry as it were):
gleaming, glinting, gas guzzling, go go GO
short stepping, staggering, shattered solemn shell
hoping hope help hold hanging halting helplessness, hinging highest heart
pointed, purposely passing people, perturbed process, pondering possibilities,
pawing,
pattering,
purring,
psychedelic,
perception,
psychotic permutations
wet wilting wallowing will,
whole-sale war, wreaking wrought, white, widespread wicked whisperings
so I guess with all of that being my first footbag event expierence, can't wait for NYJ, just ganna have to make it double awesome to make up for this.
and now it is almost 6:30am, coming up here on another 48 hour day, time to crash.

Yo dude,
I just read over those last two posts. HOLY fucking SHIT!!! sounds terrible...
Sorry you got screwed so bad, man. Was that going to be your first tournament?
I feel really bad for you. I hope your next experience is [edit: NOT SO] bad.
We've all had a bad tournament drive... hopefully, this one will take care of your bad tournament drive Karma for the next 10,000 years!

Oh my god, you're a trooper. NYJ will now seem even better after this weekends experience. The buildings are connected, so you don't even have to go outside the whole time, much less walk miles in the cold.
What a terrible time but great story. Next time people are telling birthday stories you'll beat them all.

played today for the first time since i dun broked my toe. it's still not 100% (it still hurts when i curl my toe, and theres a large bump from wher i broke it :-/), but it feels good enough to play on, taking it easy at first of course.
was a little shakey when i started off. did some atw's for a good while, i really noticed how far out of shape i had fallen just from not playing this past month.
did those then started doing mirages, and man, did they feel sooo much more smooth and they were for sure way more controlled. same thing with legovers.
didnt work on my clippers or illusions, mostly cause my knees we're starting to give me a little pain, probally from standing behind a register all day. but i got all day tomorrow.
Chicago! NYJ. Thanksgiving??!!

whoo, shitty times. I took the greyhound to arizona once. And it sucked balls and ass - switiching busses for no reason, in some random city for who knows why and then hoping another bus is going to pick you up as the employees say ( and they really don't know or care). well, yes, for all this yin, you got a a lot of yang coming ur way. Please dirty minds don't rhyme yang with wang.
Thanksgiving should be doable. u gonna be here for 2 days?

thanks eric, was a crappy experience, but a learning one.
yeah tom, should be down for the weekend, more details as the time draws near.
played yesterday and today. nothing ground breaking yesterday, more drills and such. today though i hit:
near legover both sides
tried near mirage and far legovers but it feels really awkward trying to hit anything out of clipper yet. though i guess thats just 'cause i havent tried before today.
still can't hit clipper > clipper yet though which is kinda bothering me. think next session will be clippers only.
did a few sets of ss mirage > ss mirage. i really like that drill, fun to do, really works my balance.
maybe i'll try and sneak in another short session before it gets too dark

While I truly feel bad for your experience trying to get to Hackrifice, I also have to say that I found that to be one of the most entertaining posts I've ever read on modified. After I read it I thought to myself: "this is the best tourney write-up I've ever read...and he didn't even make it to the tourney!"
I hope you make it to NYJ. I hear nothing but good things about it, and your luck can't possibly be that bad again.

Yeah, I'm super excited for NYJ.
Had one of my longer, and best sessions in a good while. I spent about 10 minutes each, working on kicks, stalls, atw's, mirages, legovers and then spent about a half hour to 45 minutes working stricly on clippers.
atw > rev atw > op toe > rpt x3
mirage > ss mirage > rpt
legover > legover > rpt x1.5
clipper > clipper (finally!)
clipper > clipper finally clicked for me today. body musta figured out how it should move so i can hit that. i hit 3 clippers in a row doing that, almost four, but i was really off balance.
i think this will be my new training session for the forsee-able future. i get the feeling like i focused more, because i gave my self a limited time to work on, and improve what i was currently drilling, if that makes sense to you, the reader.
anyways, now its time to work on my bass playing skills.

played again today from about 6:30ish(not sure when i got home and ready to play) til the sun went down. more drilling like yesterday. clippers are coming along swimmingly, which makes me really happy. OH yeah, one highlight worth mentioning:
far legover both sides (challenge!)
first time hitting it felt kinda wierd, but then i hit it 5 more times after that and the initial awkwardness started to fade.
in other news, the whole getting robbed situation isn't all the way resolved, but its very close to being resolved. ahhhh, man, that situation working out and the way footbag is going for me recently, i'm feelin' grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat like tony the tiger
is it time for NYJ yet?!
