Drew ~ Philadelphia
I've been doing alot of cardio stuff-running, walking @ inclines on treadmills, jumprope, biking and weight lifting- but I realized I'm not going to get better unless I actually play more...
so from now on I'm going to try to play for at least some time everyday, and cut back on the weight training for a bit. The cardio from playing footbag should get me to the condition I want to be in, lose a few more pounds of fat and tone up, and skool tricks at the same time.
Played for about an hour today, was pretty much just going over everything and getting back into the hang of things
Plan on stitching more bags now that summer classes are coming to an end (YAAAAY).

Played for about an hour and a half today, 2 hours on Monday and 2 on Tuesday.
I can see string length increasing as well as trick variety. Ducking and diving from right clipper is on, still need to drill flipside clippers more to be able to get the bag high enough consistently. Whirls, dynos, drifters all looking a good deal cleaner and smoother. hit some pixie shuffle tricks midstring today, wasn't really planning on it but it just flowed and I kept on shredding. felt fuckin great.
new stuff:
pdx drifter>drifter
pdx drifter>whirl
drifter>whirl BS
whirl>pdx mirage>legover>whirl>pdx mirage
drifter>dyno BS
whirl>drifter BS
whirl>weaving clipper>dyno BS
Stepping is getting there still, just need to jump higher and faster and let the bag 'pop' more under my knee
I'll get it soon enough
Now that summer classes are over I've some free time to enjoy summer! going to be stitching more bags while at work, hopefully selling a few at the NYFA jam.

Been making some bags lately and shredding a few days a week. Need to extend general string length now, moving the bigger tricks into strings more often.

45.2 grams, made out of panels I had sitting around

57.3 grams, red spiral around the bag and the other spiral is mixed turquoise and purple

41.5 grams, Don't know the name of this pattern, but opposite ends are covered by a separate row of hexes off color from the main red

51.6 grams, regular soccerball pattern, orange pents-purple hexes

50.2 grams, 10/10 blur of blue and a lighter blue, the darker blue is the color of pents and 10 of the hexes

54.3 grams, country cream pents with 10/10 blur of purple and black

Shred' with Bob Reifer on Sunday in C-Ville, pretty good session, strings are getting longer and linking higher tricks into them.
Had another session today for about 2 hours, I'm pretty sure it was the best session I've ever had. Practiced flip pixie and flip clippers, but mostly just shred freely. In particular I had 2 longer strings, 20+ contacts. First string had at least whirl BS, torque, a ducking clipper, dyno BS, about 10-12 2-add tricks, and finally dropped on ripwalk.
Can;t wait for this weekend. Oh, active green, blue and country cream fabrics came in the mail today. going to be another bag-busy week

Yo, there's some Drew footage on here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAWt0gdBsqQ
He had many more cool things in this session, but I only grabbed (for the most part) the runs over 5-6 tricks long.
Good things: dedicated, listens to instruction well, works both sides, good attitude, fun to hang out with, long legs, good athleticism, will naturally have good posture and deep dexes, toe foundation is really coming along nicely. He's one of those natural-at-whirl guys that will be able to do every variation in time. Sews really sweet bags.
Things to work on: keep working the strings to help your rhythm, work osis as well as dyno (rather than mostly dyno), keep on those clipper drills, add the same drill but with butterflies, use your ahtleticism to get through tricks while you're learning (example, remember how you cranked through that one drifter? it's ok to muscle through a little bit [don't hurt yourself though] while form is still catching up), use your clippers and butterflies in strings more (as a tiltless player, clipper > clipper > infinity > infinity > run is cool). Set placement is just as important as anything else in this game.

Had a blast at the 2nd Annual NYFA Symposium over the weekend.
My bus arrived Friday afternoon, got a couple hours of casual shred in with alot of new faces. That night the Pittsburgh crew, Ian, Jake and Matt crashed with Carrie LaGreca, myself, and our friend Matt at Bruce dole's place. His kitty Meserole (sp?) is one of the nicest and cutest cats, it took to me right away and we just chilled for the rest of that night.
Woke up around 7:30A.M. on Saturday and made the trek to Central Park and the event location. Ended up shredding for about 6-7 hours during the day, and another hour or so at night.
Met a ton of cool people throughout the day, played my first games of 4square too! My quads and upper legs were sore for a few days afterwards but they've finally come back to normal.
Sold a few bags and got some pointers from Waylon and Matt cross about specific panels and placement of fabric. Since the event I've made about 4 or 5 bags, need to get pictures up soon. I think they're much better than previously. Ordered 5 new colors of ultrasuede light, expecting them friday or saturday. Expecting new quantum's to arrive at freedomfootbags any time now, so getting kinda excited about trying em out finally.
I shred' for an hour and a half today at the gymn. I'm satisfied with where my game is heading, going to work on smoothing out all the tricks I have right now and getting some irregular links working. Weak points in my game right now seem to be flip pixie, flip ducking, spinning BS, and flip stepping set.
strong side stepping is coming along now, I'm getting the bag to pop up under my knee with lots of time. Hit sidewalk, blur, and ripwalk a bunch.
Slowly starting to work on pdx whirls and DLO's.
I usually go to the gymn 5 days a week but I don't always play footbag at the gymn. I want to start playing for at least 45 to an hour everyday and follow that up with some weight lifting. I lost about 7 or 8 pounds just over the weekend alone, mainly from playing footbag I'd guess, so let's see if I can keep that up.
Pix of new bags up soon

Been making alot of bags lately, here's a few:

also got my Quantum 03's in the other day, haven't had time for a whole session yet.
Been working on both sidedness, flip stepping set, flip ducking/diving, flip pixie, and smoothing out some older stuff.
hit stepping dyno after a few tries, increasing string length too.

dude, that bag I got from you is sooooooooo sweet btw. Instantly shreddable, and after a couple weeks now it's "can't miss" (i.e. if you miss, it's totally your fault, not due to a rolly bag etc.). Sets true (perfectly round), kicks nicely (not too much weight), and sits excellent on the delays. Plus, size now that it's fully broken in is perfect. Next time we shred, bring another like that and I'll probably stock pile it for future needs.
Bob R.
thanks Bob, might have more this weekend when we shred.
Haven't been playing as much Footbag lately as I'd like, been busy with school and other proactive activities like biking, running, swimming, and lifting weights more. I like to think it's a form of cross-training, but reminded myself yesterday that the only way to get better at footbag is to play.
Played for about 2 hours yesterday, working on string length, flipside pixies, flip stepping, flip torque, and links that are irregular to me. Also have been trying to get more of a variety of tricks coming out of clippers.
yesterday I hit
whirr
pdx DLO
pixie>ducking osis
My quantums broke a week after I got them. The heel and sole of the right shoe just came apart after a shred session, I was pretty sad
I'd been taking care of them like my first-born child. Tried re-gluing the part back on last night, plan on shredding tonight to see how it repaired it.

Yo Drew,
Here are some drills.
Well, first here are some things to keep in mind (just reminders really, we discussed these):
- good posture
- Ball moves up and down, pretty much without much/any travel on it. You move around the bag, not bag moves around you
- Don't be afraid to use your athleticism. But don't muscle through tricks for too long else you'll get injured. If you continually have to muscle through it, your form isn't there yet, or the trick is too much for your current phase of development.
Ok, drills. These are foundation drills, and at your stage should take majority of your practice for about a month or two:
- clipper drill that you've been working on
- same drill with butterflies
- Clipper > osis > ss clipper > repeat
- clipper > osis > osis > far clipper > repeat
- Clipper > far osis > op clipper > repeat
- On clippers and butterflies and osis, practice "freezing" some catches periodically. Also, play with the height of the set. Sometimes high, sometimes low, sometimes in between. Perfect set placement is key.
- mirage > ss mirage > repeat
- legover > ss legover > repeat
- pickup > ss pickup > repeat
- illusion > ss illusion > repeat
- mirage > legover > ss pickup > illusion > repeat
- get good at all these: clipper set mirage, clipper set ss legover, clipper set far legover, clipper set symple legover (both the ss and far version), clipper ss pickup, clipper far pickup ("pdx" pickup).
- once good at the clipper versions, adapt above drills to incorporate the clipper version. Goal is to be able to do all manners of mirage (or whatever) at will.
- Goal, 20+ contacts of the above items, 4 out of 5 tries, at END of practice.
Harder stuff:
- clipper > pdx mirage > ss clipper > repeat
- for stepping set, do stepping ss clipper, and blur. Skip ripwalk for now.
- You're not ready for pixie tricks really, the set isn't good yet. You're better off doing pixie toe stalls back and forth. If you must, pixie ss legover, pixie ss clipper, smear are best three to work on.
- You will own drifter and whirl. Therefore, work on it.
- Drifter > ss clipper > repeat
- Toe set drifter > op clipper > pdx mirage > repeat
- whirl > op clipper > repeat
- Toe set whirl > pdx mirage > repeat
- You're not ready for torque yet until your osis and other fundamentals are ready. Just resist it for now if you can.
That ought to be a good deal of practice time right there
When it gets frustrating, just eff around for awhile working on whatever is fun.

Just wanted to let you know how much I like the bag I got from you in August. The stitching looks really flawless and all of the pents and hexes are the same size. It stays very round and has broken in to be stally. I like the size and the wait. The color combo is sweet to. Thanks for making such a good quality bag!

Edit: Yo Mike. Yeah, there will def. be shred sessions in the near future. You've many couches to choose from if needed but I've been settling down with the beginning of the semester and should soon be contacting people who may be interested in getting some jams on!
So, this morning I had one of those 'ground-breaking' sessions. you know, one of those times when you randomly try a trick you haven't attempted in months and then end up hitting it smoothly? A few times? And that tricks leads ya to thinking, 'well shit, that was easy, maybe I can hit ___,' yeah it was one of those sessions. And it felt really good.
Played for about an hour and a half this morning, warmed up by running 1.5 miles, warmed down with stretching and another 2 miles and some more cardio.
Hit symposium whirls and toe whirls very smoothly. I've been drilling basics and schooling foundation stuff lately so decided to just have fun practicing w/e I felt like today. Ended up working mostly on downtime whirls both sides and a fair share of pixie and stepping sets.
Both of those sets are improving nicely, strong pixie keeps setting higher and higher, often enough to duck, and flip pixie is now getting more controlled with a tighter dex and better placement. DATW drills both sides are helping a ton.
As for stepping, strong side is looking good and getting more consistent, sets getting higher and more of a pop to it, sometimes high enough to duck. Been drilling blur both sides a ton and can see that's helping. Blur and ripwalk on weakside are coming along nicely, hit blur bsos a few different times this session and flip ripwalk a few times.
downtime whirls. I love 'em. I only started really working them like a week ago but I'm hitting them better and better. hit pdx whirl weakside, but it was a lil sketchy, have mostly been drilling them strong side- which I have yet to hit it on.
Haven't really attempted symposium whirl since I sprained my ankle attempting PS whirl last March, but after drilling the downtime whirls it was kind of an accident that I almost hit it once, then tried a couple more times and owned it.
I think Bob R and Matt cross' advice on it helped alot, just letting the bag fall up(off) the clipper as you jump up. My whirl from symp whirl is pretty fast, I think I might be able to hit an osis or something after, it seems uptime when I snap my leg around for the dex.
Also haven't really tried toe whirls in a long time, but they're another great practice for downtime whirls. After hitting the toe whirls both sides I kicked it up a notch and started trying whirls right out of osis' and dyno, which went really well! hit few repeats of clipper>osis>whirl>osis rpt
some cool stuff:
stepping op dyno
pixie>whirl
pixie>ducking>osis
ducking butterfly bs
torque>dyno
A great session of footbag makes a great day!

Phillies are in the world series!! WOOOOO this city is going CRAZY tonight!
Been busy with school, work, and attending the gymn. Still shredding few mornings a week, going to get more and more into drills I think rather than just shredding unproductively. I've had drills but I'm kind of beyond them, time to drill specific aspects and tricks.
Woke up and went on a 10 mile run yesterday in center city, felt pretty good. I could've gone longer but had work to do. Going to try to stitch a pentagon onto a bag/night, so on average I should be able to complete at least 2 bags a month, more than I'm doing lately.
I was shredding in rittenhouse square yesterday, in the middle of my jog, and after about 10 minutes there were probably 6-8 2-year old toddlers with their parents, all hopping around me, mimicking shred. It was really a great moment, I like kids and to see all these kids jumping around trying to kick the nearest object, you really had to have be there.
My strings in general are longer and incorporating more of my harder tricks into them.
Kind of feels like I'm between big points in my game right now, consistency is getting there, so is variety, but I want to work more different methods for these tricks, from different sets or cool links.

It turns out I had Mono, not strep throat, so the last 2 weeks were pretty shitty. My throat swelled up and it was hella painful to eat/drink anything and I got like no sleep. It sucked. But yay for Student Health services giving me steroids that cured the swelling, only $5! I was like, DAYAMM I LOVE YOU PPL!
Been getting back into the groove of footbag and working out normally again. Last night ran 4 miles on the treadmill in 35 mins, bout 1/2 of one of the miles was running backwards, boy was that more difficult than I'd expected. Turned the speed down and was still sweatin' more bullets than normal running.
Shredded last thursday for about an hour but was pretty tired from the sickness, so nothing too great. Played for about 2 hours this morning between lifting and cardio stuff, lots of jumping rope too. Was disappointed in the beginning, short strings and worked mostly osis, whirls and pixie, I guess I didn't have much energy, so I went to lifting.
Later I came back to some shredding, worked mostly on pixie sets and pdx whirls, have yet to hit pdx whirl, keep getting it on toe of clippers though.
Spent some time last night reading up on tips for DLO so figured I'd give em a try and hit my first few smooth DLO's both sides. When I concentrated on setting the bag quickly it felt like I had a long time to execute the trick, so going to start working onf aster legwork in dexes and sets, and timing should open up more windows. I'm pretty happy about that, should add a cool aspect to the game when I've got em down solid.
Since I had mono the doctor said no contact sports or drinking alcohol, my liver and spleen are enlarged and will be for a lil while after being sick. I'm actually not missing the drinking. Being a college student, binge drinking on weekends has been a habit for the past year and a half, but I'm actually enjoying not partaking in it. How ironic that now I can legally drink I'm not, I think I'm going to go for a while longer without drinking, to increase my stamina and endurance for running. I plan on running the Philly Marathon this weekend, should be fun, hopefully not too cold.
School's cool, math is becoming more and more interesting, I like the challenge of it but also the fact that there are direct answers to these problems in calculus. Been doing alot of real life problems about expansions of areas and rates of changing liquids, can't wait til thermodynamics and heat transfer, though it'll be a bitch.
Need to get back to writing up chemistry lab report on Beer's Law, about spectrophotometer's and light absorbancy.
Ill try to keep myself updated more and more accurately record my progress
