Soo... Been a while. life's been a bit busy, between work and returning to school (my final year... thesis time...stressful) and One of my friends also came out from toronto to see me. All these things aren't too bad, it's just left me with little time to play. This is a shame, cause I feel really sluggish and kinda out of shape.
Over the last couple of days, I got a few sessions in, and finally hit a dream drill of mine, the oh so classic drifter>pdx drifter [rpt], and managed to close it off with a decently long guiltless string. Felt SO good. Other than that, nothing really crazy been playing around with incorporating merlin into my game, and hit DP Mirage> merlin which felt pretty good. 2nd dex on the merlin was probs a little thin, but what can you do? I've had no shred buddies to call the on my many thes (all my barrages...) for almost a month at this point in time. Where's the dedication, people?
My stepping is better than it was a month ago, but still needs improvement. Nonetheless being able to do a little shuffle is cool. Hit like 10 shuffle contacts, pixies and steps only. Tried to toss in an atomic at the end, and finished my run. Gotta work the atoms, but its just so frustrating!
Nothing else new. Love footbag. That's all.

Had a couple of sessions in the last few days, and I finally managed to get shire to play with me. He needs to practice more, he could be extremely sick. He still hits some ripping tricks (unbelievable torques and stepping tricks... he hadn't played in a month!), but needs to get better at stringing, no more midstring toe stalls.
I had an ok session, some stuff just continues to get more consistant, like my drifters and paradox whirls. Set my drifter record yesterday, and beat it today, with 11 and 13. I'd likke to hit 25.
Was messing with my spins today, and am enjoying slowly gaining control over them. Bsosing my gyro mirages, pickups and legovers (in separate strings) felt good. I don't have to think about my set quite as hard as I had to a couple of months ago. I should start going for spinning whirl again. I think my whirls and spins are solid enough at this point.
Rev swirls are also getting better, I managed to hit it x2 on my strong side, and I'm concentrating on sticking the catch much better. I was bailing to osis out of them far too much. I've also noticed that improving my rev swirl catch also solidified my symp whirl catch. I think it's the muted clipper catch thing that they have in common.
Other than that, not much. I play in the driveway beside my house when I'm soloing, and today I got a couple of nice comments from passers by, which is sweet. I always have this little paranoid voice in the back of my head that is trying to convince me that everone who walks past thinks I'm weird and lame, and it's nice to know that a couple of people think what I do is cool.
I wish I had a really solid club. I miss the south ontario scene. It seems so good these days.

What's up footbag land? I just played for the third time in three days, and, to tell the truth, my legs are frikken KILLING me! In the winter, I play about 5 times a week at the gym, and my shin splints don't give me too much trouble, but I think that so much sredding on concrete is really putting the ol' shins to the test.
I have a real love hate relationship with concrete, cause although it ends up hurting me if I play on it too much, its so grippy, and i notice the lack of give, as it helps me spring up and hit eggs and dlos.
Anyway, I took it pretty easy, and only managed a 40 minute session before I called it a day, do that I'll be able to walk tomorrow, and hopefully play again sunday. One highlight, 10 plos, which I think I could beat, but nonetheless felt nice. Consistency in any set is something I haven't really experienced before.
Got mad props from a school group on a field trip. I love how kids have no problems with giving props to randoms. If only everyone was so open about stuff.
In other news, it looks like I'm going to meet my ex-gf (sorta) in honduras just after christmas for 10 days, which I am INSANELY excited about. I've never done any travelling without my family, really, so I'm looking forward to this really cool opportunity. The other nifty thing is that Honduras is not really a tourist hotspot, so I'm hoping it won't be too grossly overdeveloped.
I spend so much time reading modified, and I am sad that I haven't yet had an opporunity to meet all the cool people whos lives I know too much about. When I am out of school (in june), I vow to attend like a billion jams. They sound like so much fun!

Took a three day break, and then had like an hour and a half solo session. Felt really good, was pretty happy with the way I played today. Highlights:
Tomahawk BSOS. Pretty sure that's my first BSOSed 5.
Blender midstring, but only one side. It's a start.
Spinning osis BSOS. Awesomely fun trick to hit. Should go for spinning dyno...
Pdx blender bs. I don't really find this much harder than ss blender. I have a good pdx set.
Other than that, not really a whole lot of individual highlights, just a noticeable concistency in random tricks I was trying to hit. Eggbeaters were pretty on, and my atomic is improving, really slowly. midstring taps, at least.
I get to go to toronto in a week! I am excited. Sounds like there will be a little shredding.

Had an incredibly brief session both yesterday and today as my shins are killing me. I am almost at the limping point, which hasn't happened pretty much since I lost a bunch of weight a couple of years ago. I guess I'm gonna have to take another couple of days hiatus. Looks like its time to start playing in a gym. The mind is willing, but the body is weak...
Managed to hit a couple of cool things, like my 3rd and 4th triple dexes, pixie paradon (probably the), and pixie tap, which i think was pretty legit. Only a couple of times each (out of like 20 tries), but its a cool start. I still feel somewhat guilty about these kind of tricks, as they're really self indulgent, and there's much more important things I need to work on, like flip atomic and paradon. Oh well, since I have no one to play with, I might as well be self indulgent. I wonder where Sergey is.
Can't think of any other highlights, per se, but my flip blurs and spinning both sides continue to advance slowly. Considering I've been focusing on that crap for almost six months, I was hoping it would've come further. What can you do.
I started that hundred pushups regimen that someone posted, and I'm just finishing up week 2. I can definitely feel an improvement in my pushups, if nothing else. I can't really picture myself ever being able to do 100 in a row, but it's a nice thought. we'll see how long I last.

Hey, I just recently bsosed my first 5 too, unfortantly mine wasnt nearly as cool as tomahawk which is still considered a sick 1 for me. Mine was, of course, phoenix.
Lame, I know. I'm still in the race to smear>dimwalk>blur>rpt. I hit it with blizzards, but that doesnt count cuz blur's the hardest part of that combo for me.
Peace

My flip phoenix is not so hot, so you're miles ahead of me on that one. Props, Tank!
Anyways, had my first session in like a week yesterday with Adam Greenwood in toronto. It was a lot of fun, but also sucked a bit.
Good Parts: Playing with greenwood is madly fun. He is a shred monster, and can shuffle for ages! Midstring catwalks are so stylish, and he tosses them in there everywhere.
At the same time as he is still a lot better than me, we are at about the same spot spinning-wise, so we had a good time challenging each other spinning wise. We had a race to spinning clipperx2 BSOS, and I won! But only just. We must have both fotted it like a hundred million times.
Another good part was that he brought his cam, and caught a little footy, which is sweet. I'll be interested to see how my game has changed since the last time I got filmed, last christmas. I definitely feel like my game is a little bit more consistant, and interesting at this point. Hopefully I'll se places where I need to clean up my style.
Bad Part: About halfway through filming, I rolled my ankle on a symp pixie. Not the first time I rolled my ankle, but the first time I heard it make a pop when it did so. Kinda scary. It's not that bad, but I definitely won't get another session in before I go back to Halifax, which is a shame. C'est la vie. I hope it heals soon.

I played for the first time in what feels like a billion years today. For a while I was worried about my ankle, but recently I've just been too busy with work and school and shit. I played in my room, cause I just cleared out enough space, and, considering the limits of the room, it didn't go too bad. Nothing to really write about here, but I was practicing my steps and spins, and they are clicking a bit more than they used to, especially when I switch from my unforgiving training bag to one of my more choice bags (I have this pink and blue suderman bag that is at that that amazing stage of potentially falling apart within the next five minutes, but being the most forgiving thing ever).
Oh! One highlight, which was spinning ducking clipper for the first time, which is sweet. If I ever wanna hit sweet sixes and sevens, I feel spinning ducking is a must. I also hit nova again, which I hit while playing with greenwood, and forgot to mention. Too awkward, I think, to ever be something midstringable. I'm not a big fan of single tricks, unless their really sweet, and I'm definitely not of the abilites to be hitting awesome single tricks. Maybe one day.
I really wanna get out to the gym, as it's something that part of my tuition pays for, and it's a shame to waste. Squash courts are definitely sweet places to play, specially if you bring a tune box.
Turns out my room mate has a camera that takes acceptable video, so I think I'm gonna do a couple of one- shots or whatever. I'd really like some style critiques from the community cause I'm always worried that my style is just total crap from playing by myself all the time. We'll see.

While I was playing today, I was thinking about how my perspective of the sport has changed since I started to play really seriously. I was a hacker throughout High School, but it wasn't until 2005 when I first met up with FAT in Toronto, and was exposed to the wonderful world of freestye foosebag.
My first exposure to footbag was a bitter-sweet experience. In one way, it was a great, because by that time I had become kind of tired of traditional circle kicking, and suddenly seeing that there was a whole lot more to the sport was excellent. My brain exploded, and I was really excited to start trying the multitude of new concepts that I was being shown were actually possible. So, on the one hand, it was really refreshing to find a way in which I could extend my footbagging to another level.
But on the other hand, the values that came with hippy kicking were still deeply ingrained, so it didn't sit quite right with me that, if I was going to get into this more intense version of footbagging, I would have to treat it a little more like a real sport. It's not the kind of thing that you can really do (especially not enjoyably) if you haven't brought your proper gear, and one of the reasons I got into kicking at all was the way you could just start hacking just about whenever and wherever you wanted. Also, I have, up until very recently, been a real hater of organized sports, and between the gear, and the idea that there were rules, competitions, and a scoring system, it looked suspociously like an organized sport. To add to this oppressive feeling, there is definitely one event that almost drove me away from the game. One of the first times I hung out with FAT, Paul Toews was there. For those of you who got to see Paul play before his injury, I hope you feel as lucky as I do. Because that guy was really, really good (I remember, even after he was injured, that one day he just upped and hit montage in pants! He said it was the only seven he could still do). But I digress. Anyway, there were a couple of us n00bs in the circle with Paul, and about halfway through the session, he stopped us and gave us the gears for bad passes. At the time, I didn't really understand how annoying it is to chase poor sets from other players, and I hadn't really been enlightened about circle etiquette. Having criticism from someone you respect (and also don't know very well) cuts pretty deep, and made me feel that I was unworthy to be playing with these players who were already so talented. The idea that my perspective on this hobby that I had already enjoyed for so long would have to change drastically if I wanted to succeed was a tough one for me to accept. As I'm sure you all know, footbag is not something that you want to go into half-assed. I practice as much as I can and every small progression I make can't come soon enough.
Don't get me wrong when I say this, either. Circle kicking just randomly is a wonderful thing, and I still do it every once in a while (not enough). I'm just saying that gaining any profiency at all in the art of footbaggery requires that one allow for a certain amount of dedication, discipline, and attention that are not required when having a kick with your buddies after a few beers and a joint.
Despite my initial misgivings, once I had actually made the purchase commitment by getting a pair of lavers and a blue and yellow Abshire, I found the dedication part came pretty easily, and I have managed to embrace footbag more and more as a sport, and not just a hobby. I realised that if I was going to be able to achieve any of those amazing things that I was watching the members of FAT do, I was going to have to give up the free-and-easy ways of the circle kicker, and learn to take footbag a little more seriously (but never too seriously, it pays to have a sense of humour...). Now I'm fully dedicated to the sporting mentality, so much that I actually make the effort to get out to the gym three days a week in the winter. High schol me would've laughed in your face if you ever told him that he was gonna get into a physical activity so intensely.
Anyway, no more rambling on, I have many papers that I must fill with rambling, and I don't want to use it all up.
I don't even know why I wrote this all down
Also, I managed to hit pigbeater today, but only barefoot. Should keep working on that one it's cool. I really wanna hit bedwetter, too, but I gave it a couple of tries, and I'm nowhere close. Need to keep on schooling the stepping.

Well, I've managed to have a couple of sessions since my last post, which means I actually have a few (though still very limited) highlights:
ripwalk>blur BSOS
Ripwalk x4 new personal record
Ducking legover>magellan>parkwalk [rpt]
drifter>whirl>DLO [rpt]
legoverx80, first try, which is not bad. my legs felt like jello after managing that, there is no way I would have had a second chance at it.
blur>legbeater FINALLY. First Stepping to atomic EVER. Maybe I'll hit rubberman in the next 400 years.
Things are ok, but even though I've moved to inside sessions on a much more forgiving playing surfaces, I still can't really play two consecutive days, or else I get pretty bad shin pains. Not sure if they're splints or not, but toe ups don't seem to be helping.
After having gone to the gym for the first couple of times of the year, I have to say I am more shocked than ever by the conduct of the old naked men in the change rooms. I understand that we're all the same under our clothes (though some of us are wrinklier, as the last few days have demonstrated to me), but that doesn't mean you have to stretch your naked-in-public time out for as long as you possibly can. I am not interested in watching naked 60 year olds do stretches in front of me while I'm trying to mind my own business and get changed. Today was the last straw. I wasn't straight up staring, but while I was washing my hands after using the bathroom, I swear to god that some fat old dude walked up to the disposable towel, pulled off a chunk, and just started wiping sweat or something out of his ass crack. Just standing there in the middle of the room, as if this is an acceptable thing to do. IT IS NOT. Some people need to find themselves a toilet stall, and a little self-consciousness.
I'm sorry if this makes me sound prudish or something, but seriously. There are some things that don't need to be done in public, and combing your hair in front of a mirror can be just as enjoyable wearing a pair of boxers as not.
PS Greenwood put out a video of me and him. It's in the videos section. Watch it and gimme criticism!

So... I had a run in with a mechanical bull on tuesday, and I woke up wednesday feeling like someone had worked me over with a sack of doorknobs (especially in the groin? I suspect if I had been hit in the groin with a sack of doorknobs, it would've been a little more serious... but you get the point).
Anyway, I needed a couple of days to recover, so I didn't have a session between monday and today, which left me feelin really nice and fresh for my sesh. Not a bad session, even though I had sworn to myself I would finally get those stepping drills down (rip>side [rpt], and dtank's challenge of smear>dim>blur [rpt]), and didn't manage to finish either. Despite this, I footed the first combo both sides, and both sides starting on sidewalk, so I've gotta be close to nailing it. Maybe next session. The second combo, I can get five contacts either side, but that last blur is a killer. It's good, though, smear and dim are probably my weakest weakside pixie components, so it left me schooling those as well, and they felt better by the end of the day.
Other cool highlights:
pdx whirl>ducking legover>dimwalk [rpt]. I like this combo. If I could replace the legover with a mirage, and the dimwalk with a legbeater it would be SO sweet. We'll see, maybe soon.
infinity swirl and far swirl bs. Both new on my weak side
Ducking osis>barrage BSOS. I've been working on my osii, and I think my problem is not turning my head to look at it on the other side soon enough. I still have to make a conscious effort to do so, but when I remeber to bring that head around faster, it cleans up my osis a lot. The only problem is that if I pause too long with it, I lose all the 'umph' to get a decent strong set out of it (for ducking, or spinning or something), so I have to balance out a controlled catch, and a smooth flow into the next trick.
Well, that's about all. This is my fourth post in a row. I need to think of more interesting stuff to write about, to pring in the customers. Maybe I should just conclude all my posts with a really inflammatory remark, so that peeps flame me.
God doesn't exist.

So... I decided to get involved in a conversation in trick tips about symposium butterfly, and even though I was proved to be totally incorrect in what I had to say, it still left me wanting to put my money where my mouth is, so I decided to hit some symple (and what turn out to be just non ADD-worthy symposium) tricks. It was fun. Hit some cool new shit.
symp butter>symp ss butter [rpt]
backside legbeater and tripwalk, but only good side
pogo far butter and stepping symp butter bs. Full symp only one side
far symple pickup>ss whirl [rpt]
pogo far symple pickup
Other than that I just schooled my steps and spins a little bit. The name of the game is attack. I need to make my initial motion on both faster, so that I nail my downtime component more cleanly, and can link it to cool stuff.
The one other thing I took a couple of shots at were my good side barflies, and bad side paradons. The strong side barflies are getting better, I've gotten my dexes faster and smoother, for that badass barfly look. I also hit double over down bs for the first time today. I was thinking about them wrond before. I was thinking it was like a DATW, and you kind of started your dex at the same time you were setting the bag, but it's much easier if you set it low, and give it just a sec before starting your dexes. I should school them, and incorporate into the ol' game. Double downs are cool.
