Essay Help

Post by kldfjlaksdj »

Hello all

I'm coming to you all for some help on an Essay I have to write for my Intro to Composition Class.

It's a Critical essay about the story "The Family that Dwelt Apart" by E.B. White. I have to write about the Allegorical theme in the story, and I don't really quite understand what an allegory is, or how I can find it within the story.

That's pretty much the only part of the story I really need help with. The other 2 areas I can figure out on my own, since its not going to be too difficult(Setting and Irony).

Thanks in Advance for any help!

I'm a literature student myself and use this site occasionally http://www.tnellen.com/cybereng/lit_terms/index.html which defines allegory as

"Allegory is a form of extended metaphor, in which objects, persons, and actions in a narrative, are equated with the meanings that lie outside the narrative itself. The underlying meaning has moral, social, religious, or political significance, and characters are often personifications of abstract ideas as charity, greed, or envy.
Thus an allegory is a story with two meanings, a literal meaning and a symbolic meaning."

So I'm guessing that the irony and setting and allegorical nature of the story are all inter-related - I've never read the book myself but it seems as though this is what the question is implying.

Not sure if I've helped at all :P

hey bud,

there's a difference between asking for help, and asking someone to open a dictionary and read it to you.

a professor once said the same thing to me, and I thought he was a dick, and you probably think I'm being a dick as well, but, guess what?

he was right.

Maybe try something like: "Life is good, until the outside world comes into play. From there, a series of event leads to the disintegration of the family."
