Thank you so much for filming and posting this Age! I feel really lucky that all 3 of my dropless routines got caught on tape this summer, especially considering that my camera was broken during that whole time.

I like how the first 10 seconds of the video is me waiting for the music to come on, and you can hear Dave Byers making "Duel" jokes with me. DUEL! As I mentioned before, 19 pdx mirages on one side in 2 minutes isn't my proudest moment, but given that I was 2 weeks removed from my accident in Prague, I was thrilled to go dropless. Looking at this routine today, I'm very happy with it.

No shred since my last session on Wednesday, mostly because work has been kicking my ass. Hopefully get in a shred tomorrow with Age and film it. Here's a drill I hit last session:

Not much footbag lately, and things don't look promising on the horizon neither. Somehow though, I'm strangely OK with that.

Played on Monday and Wednesday last week, then I didn't get in a session again until this Monday. This was largely due to a combination of work kicking my butt and the sun going down too soon after work. I had Monday off from work so I went up to Maryland to play with Vince. I had time to kill before Vince could pick me up, so I warmed up outside the metro while listening to Girl Talk on my ipod. I had just bought new earbud headphones the day before, and they stay in my ears a lot better than past earbuds, which makes it easier to warm up while using them. As part of my warm-up I did infinities, and counted them. When I got to about 50, I figured I might as well try for my record (111), so I kept going. Around 100, one of my earbuds popped out, and began swinging in an annoying way. I tuned it out and focused on the butterflies, and managed to get up to around 160 before the swinging earbud annoyed me enough that I handcaught the bag and stopped. I definitely could have done more, but I was still pleased to set a new record. The reason I'm saying I hit "160-ish" and not a more precise number, is that I know my counting wasn't precise, since the odd-numbered clipper foot switched at some point to being even. That said, I can't imagine my count being off by more than 5 in either direction, so new record no matter what.

Vince and I played in a driveway, which in retrospect was a pretty bad spot. The sun was good and the surface was mostly level, but towards the end of the driveway it started to slope downwards. Over the course of the session the sun moved more and more towards the slope-y end, where spins became really hard and footwork in general kind of dangerous. Perhaps not coincidentally, Vince and I started off well and then sucked really bad towards the end.

I spent a good 50% of the session just trying one move over and over, which is usually a bad idea. Given the uneven surface, it was definitely a bad idea. While no single attempt at the trick hurt me, the repetitive stress of doing the same set over and over on a non-flat surface ended up hurting my pinkie toe on my left foot. At first I thought my shoe was just pinching me a bit, and that night I thought I may have bruised it, but in the 2 days following that I have come to the conclusion that I either got a bone-bruise or I fractured my toe. Either way, there's nothing I can do except keep weight off of it and rest it. Translation: I am done for the winter.

Normally, I would be really bummed about an injury that will keep me out of footbag for any period of time, much less the month or two I anticipate this injury will keep me out. That said, I already feel like the footbag season is coming to a close for me, and a couple months away from the sport to recover physically and refresh myself mentally is probably a good thing. The fact that NBA season starts in less than a week, and that I have a cool girlfriend to hang out with on weekends makes it easier for me to embark on this break from footbag.

Anyway, back to blogging Monday. Here's one of my better runs:

After the shred I got dinner with Vince, then went to his house to Wii bowl on Age's Wii, which she left there after East Coasts. I finally made a Mii, which I'm excited about because now I can track my stats. In bowling I was in the zone for some reason, and set a new personal record for strikes in a row: 6! I think I was prouder of that than I was of my new infinity record. I ended up scoring 245 in that game, just two points off my all-time high. We played a few more games, and I got my rating up from 0 to around 800. I just want to get the shiny pro-ball next time I play. Age joined us after her class got out, and we all played "samba de amigo," which is like the maraca version of DDR. I'll post vids of that later.

When I got home my foot started to feel a bit worse. It feels better today, but I'm unable to walk normally, so I don't see footbag happening for a while. I'm hoping for a relaxing recovery with lots of beer, NBA, and maybe some drawing or juggling. Maybe I'll get back into Scrabble again. We'll see. Anyway, if you don't see me at any tournies or even in my own blog very much over the next couple months, now you know why.

It's been one week since I last played footbag, but it somehow feels much longer than that. My injured toe is recovering remarkably well; I can walk normally and it doesn't hurt at all unless I walk on it too long or too far. If Worlds were this weekend, I would definitely be able to compete. That's the whole thing though: I sustained two bad injuries at Worlds, and took a grand total of what, two weeks to recover? Even though I feel that I have fully recovered from my hip injury from Worlds and my knee was probably 80% better last week, part of me wonders if I am leaving myself open to injuries (like my toe last week) because I never gave my body enough time to recover. It's tempting to rush back into playing because I miss it, and because my toe is recovering so well. I'm making it a point to resist this urge, and force myself to take off at least one full month. I'm already having dreams of playing footbag, so this will be a difficult challenge. Thankfully though, NBA season starts tomorrow night! This should be my best NBA season to date for several reasons:

1. I have a TV and Cable in my apartment.
2. I don't have school anymore.
3. I live in a city with an NBA team, and the stadium is accessible by subway.
4. The best player on the DC team is injured, so tickets will hopefully be cheaper, or at least easier to get.

Over the weekend it occurred to me that I have never had as much footbag gear in the past as I do now. In the past, I was lucky to have 1 playable bag and one backup, one pair of broken-in shred shoes, and at most 2 pairs of shorts. Now though, thanks to my sponsors (shout out to planetfootbag and Waylon) and my success at tournies over the last year, I have a ton of good footbag gear. I have 2 broken-in Waylon bags, one new Waylon bag, 3 other usable bags, something like 5 pairs of good shred shorts, 2 pairs of broken-in G-Units, and a pair of Quantum 3s which I have yet to use. Taking time off footbag is even harder for me, knowing I have all these toys to play with.

Went bowling with Age on Saturday. It's so weird doing real-life bowling after playing so much Wii-bowling. At one point, the guy in the lane next to us dropped his ball. I instinctively dropped my arms to my sides and stiffly jumped up and down. I'm such a nerd. But maybe Wii bowling has helped me out. In one game I bowled 2 strikes in a row, and finished with a new personal best score: 141!

This Thursday I'm giving blood. This will be the first time I give blood since I gave up eating meat like 3 months ago, so I hope I have enough iron in my blood. My plan is to eat a lot of spinach and fortified cereal this week. Any other veggie suggestions?

whatever you do, don't drink alcohol after you give blood. I made that mistake last year: I gave blood, went home and mowed lawn, had a beer to wash it down... one beer for goodness sake... and ended up feeling like I was dying for the next 4-5 hours.

ps - the tickets would need to be damn near free to make it worth watching your local team ;-)

My foot has healed remarkably well; I'd say it's 95% recovered. I can walk normally and it doesn't feel weird at all, and I bet I could play freestyle so long as I avoided any symposium on that foot or swirls. I was (am) feeling good enough that I contemplated going up to the Pittsburgh jam on Sunday and playing for one day, but neither Vince nor Age can give me a ride. So even with my quick recovery, Pittsburgh isn't in the cards.

And you know what? I'm OK with that. Monday will mark 2 weeks off of footbag, which is halfway to my self-imposed goal of 1 month of rest. By not going to Pittsburgh, I won't have to re-set my goal-clock. On top of all that, I just gave blood yesterday, so it's not a bad idea to continue resting up.

I was recently reading some of my old blog entries from 2 years ago, and it made me feel good about my progress with footbag. I was probably hitting some stuff back then that I would have trouble with now (juantomic butterfly), but there are also lots of things I have improved on since then. There were a few entries where I had the goal of getting 20 drifters; this year I broke 30. I've also hit a lot of tricks, combos, and routines in the last 2 years that make me feel like I'm still making progress with my game, which is something an 11 year vet should feel proud of.

Hey man,

When Nils, Tripp and I have our session tommorrow (Jake, Matt and Aiden are possible attendees, ftr) we will be missing you. Lol.
Lol X2.

When SCF decides to organize a competition in the future, it would be great to have you around.

Also, there is a Girl Talk show coming up. You should visit us and buy tix for that. We'll kick and it will be sweet. Greg Gillis always treats Pittsburgh vey well. Last time we got free Taco Bell after the show. Hmm. Maybe I should invite DC as well.

Hope your month off is doing you well. Don't get too used to the easy life. I plan on kicking with you in the retirement home.

spinach does not contain much iron! be sure you consume some vitamin C with anything that contains iron (it helps the uptake of iron).

The big news is that I played footbag this weekend. When I hurt my toe two weeks ago, the weather was getting cold enough that I thought it was the perfect time to take a break from footbag. My goal was to rest up for 1-2 months. Then my toe healed ahead of schedule, and I considered breaking my sabbatical to go to the Steel Hallowjam. Unfortunately I was unable to secure a ride, so I mentally resigned myself to continuing my time off. But when I woke up on Saturday morning and the temperature was in the 70s (in November!) I knew there was no way I could squander this opportunity. I went up to Maryland and had an outdoor shred with Age. It was such a joy to be playing outdoors in shorts and a t-shirt. I was also really jonesing to kick, since I hadn't played in 10 days. I was surprised by how out of shape I was; even short easy strings left me tired. Despite that setback, I had a good time playing and even managed to hit two new tricks: spinning butterfly swirl and flipside spinning butterfly swirl. So while I didn't play super-well, I had a great time enjoying footbag and the weather.

On Sunday the crisp chill of autumn had already returned to the air, which made me feel smart that I played on Saturday when I had the chance. I still planned on taking off a month from footbag, but since I had Monday off and I played on Saturday, I figured I might as well start my month off on Tuesday. On Monday I went to Vince's house and got in a session in his living room. Vince was injured, so I played solo for about an hour. My right knee felt 100%, and I had fun testing it out by doing down doubles and symp tricks using that leg. I also hit a new trick which I had been thinking about for a couple years, but never thought was realistic (for me) until a couple months ago. I think I'll have an easier time taking a break from the sport now that I hit it, since it's off the checklist.

Here's a genuine run from my session:

In theory the plan is to take off a month from footbag starting now, but it looks like I will be visiting Pittsburgh the weekend of the 22nd, so in all likelihood I will play a little around then.

This whole "time off" thing doesn't look like its in the cards. Next week I am going on a business trip, and the hotel I'm staying at apparently has an indoor basketball court and gym. I'm going to bring my footbag gear on the chance that it's a good enough spot to play. Given that I don't have an indoor winter spot this year (not one I can use during weekdays), it sounds like an opportunity I shouldn't pass up. It also might make sense for me to keep my conditioning up somewhat, considering that I'm going to Pittsburgh on November 22nd. I'm going with Adrienne to see Girl Talk in concert, and to hang out with Ian. Unfortunately, it sounds like his art exhibit got shut down, which sucks cause I was excited to see it. Still, a weekend with Girl Talk, footbag and friends sounds amazing.

I don't have much in the way of immediate footbag goals these days. I'm hoping to work with Age over her winter break and make a video with some footage of mine. There are a couple of combos we got on tape in Maryland last month, but most of the footage is old stuff from Cornell that I sent to Rory and he didn't use in the Skee-Lo video. Some of that footage is a year old, but is still pretty entertaining. It's interesting to see how much your trick/concept selection can change in just one year. Granted, injuries had something to do with it, but even taking that into account, it's still a trip to see yourself doing stuff you don't do anymore.

While it looks like I won't take November off from footbag (though I hope to take off all of December), I'm definitely scaling back my playing time. I'm guessing I'll average 1.5 sessions a week during November, which is a far cry from what I was averaging for most of the past year. I think these next couple months would be a good time for me to figure out what are my footbag goals for next year, and for the rest of my career. If you had asked me last year, I think a dropless routine would have topped my list. Now that I've accomplished that, I'm not sure what takes its place.

Here's another short clip from Monday:

I'm gonna try and play this weekend. If I do, I'll shoot a few runs.

My whole "take a month off of footbag" plan isn't a bad one; I just underestimated Autumn in DC. Back at Cornell or northern Japan the outdoor shred season is over by beginning of October, if not earlier, so I can be forgiven for mistiming my plan. Fall in DC continues to impress. It's definitely getting chilly, and the sun goes down too soon to be able to play after work, but on a good day it can be in the high 60s/low 70s for a few hours in the middle of the day. You just need to be lucky enough to have one of those days fall on a weekend or a day off, and so far I've been pretty lucky. This past weekend, both days were just plain beautiful outside. On Saturday I played outdoors on the UMd campus and I was perfectly comfortable in shorts and a t-shirt. Perfect shred weather. Here's a clip from that session to show you how nice out it was:

We only played for an hour or so, because we were going to see a basketball game, but it was a fun session. I hit my newest quad dex again, and this time I sealed it with a good run. We got it on Age's camera, so look for it when we make a video. More than anything though, it just felt fantastic to play footbag, and to play footbag outside. Few things make me happier in life.

Sunday was also really nice out, but by the time we got a session together, it was too cold/dark outside. Age has access to the school gym, so we played in a really nice fitness gym. Check it out:

This was a really fun session for me, but I need to give some backstory to explain why. Flash back over a year: I'm a busy grad student who has access to a video camera, but doesn't have the time to edit footage. I decided to shoot lots of footage of myself and send it to an editor I like so they could make a video using the footage I shot. I ended up shooting a ton of stuff and sending it to Rory. His original plan was to make 2 videos. One would be a playful video about basketball, and one would be a more hardcore shred vid with my more difficult tricks and links. The basketball video came out amazing (its linked in my signature), and to this day is one of my favorite videos. It did a good job of capturing the fun I have with footbag, and its the vid I usually send to people when I want to show them my hobby. Because of school Rory didn't have time to make the second video, but I was curious to see the rest of the footage. Rory sent it to me so I could figure out what to do with it. I had fun looking at the footage, but couldn't help but feel that it was a little dated (some clips were over a year old). Often times the combos/tricks themselves weren't bad, but the sealing run was very boring, and I knew I could do better today. Flash forward to Sunday's session. I didn't enter the session with any concrete goals, but I decided I would try to "re-hit" some of the highlights from the Rory footage and see if I could replicate them. I managed to get 2 of them pretty easily, and I like the sealing strings a lot better than the originals. I feel like I've now hit enough good stuff in the last 3 taped sessions that I can abandon the old Rory footage and not feel bad. This also makes things easier for us from a technical standpoint, since I think it would have been tough to edit the year old footage, to say nothing of the fact that the shred would have been out of date. Beyond all that, it made me feel good to realize that I can still hit most of my hardest stuff from a year ago.

Other highlights from Sunday session:

*Age hit smear, and was close to flip PLO
*I hit my oldest quad dex a few times. It's rare for me to hit 2 different quads in consecutive sessions.
*Had some good looks at a new quad. If I get it, it will be my 8th quad.

The Wizards have started the season 0-5, so you aren't alone in that opinion. That said, I like some of our young guys like McGee and Young, and if Arenas comes back healthy, we could probably sneak into the playoffs.

Played with Age again on Tuesday. Stoked to be playing this much footbag lately. So on Saturday and Sunday I played near the top of my game, so I was due for a subpar session. We played in an indoor soccer field, but the building was kinda drafty so I never warmed up fully. In the past I think I would have been frustrated with a session where I suck so bad, but I was so happy with my weekend shred that I was good about just rolling with the session and having fun. Adrienne played really well, probably the best I've seen her play. I was glad we got some good footage of her. And while I sucked for 95% of the session, I had one good string and one good combo, so that's one more background for a video and 2 more clips.

I'm in West Virginia now on a business trip, and I'm having a great time. I played pick-up basketball today, and did well in the first game, but my stamina made the second game really rough. In bad news, I played in casual shoes and socks, which gave me a nasty blister on one foot. I think it'll be fine in a week if I take it easy. I just want to be ready to dance and play when I go to Pittsburgh in 10 days. In more fun news, I sang karaoke tonight, which is always a treat. "In my life" by the Beatles, and "bohemian rhapsody" by Queen with my new basketball friends. Good times.

I think you had a bad session on Tuesday because you were completely intimidated by the awe inspiring, sacred ground that we played upon... Next time you will be able to soak in its power and have the best session of your life ;)

I haven't played footbag since last Tuesday, so don't expect any highlights in this entry.

As loyal zine readers may remember, I blew out my legs last Wednesday playing pick up basketball, and vowed to take some time off to heal. That time off has been going well; my blister is completely healed and my leg muscles feel 98% back to normal. I don't fully trust my right hamstring yet, but if I take my time warming up at the start of my next few sessions, I am sure I'll be fine. While I haven't played footbag in a while, I've been pretty good about staying in shape. Basketball was a great workout, and in the week since then I've been to the gym twice. I have a gym in my apartment complex, so I think I am going to start working out there a few times a week during the winter. My workout consists of 10 minutes/100 calories on an elyptical machine to warm up, and then a bunch of upper-body stuff. I feel like my leg muscles are already in good footbag shape so I don't want to mess with them by adding unnecessary bulk. Gaining some stamina and some upper-body strength can't hurt.

I felt a bit nostalgic lately, so I went back and read old entries from my blog. That was a fun stroll down memory lane; I'm glad I keep a blog. Reading entries from the last 2-3 years really brought two emotions to the fore: I am happy that I am still playing footbag and still improving, and I feel thankful/lucky to be in the place I am in life at the moment. When I left Japan and went to Arizona, I was unemployed and lacked a career path, lived in a social (and literal) desert, and only had footbag to keep me sane. Now I have a good government job, live in a fun city, have footbag and grad school friends in the area, have a great girlfriend, and am still improving as a footbag player. Grad school wasn't easy, but I feel like it paid off.

I also had fun going through old entries and reading about tricks/goals I was working on. There were some tricks (flailing torque) and combos (pdx drifter-vortex bsos) that I completely forgot I had hit. I'd read them, and be like: "I don't remember hitting that!" That was fun. It was also interesting to read about goals I set a long time ago, which in some cases it took me a couple years to hit, and sometimes long after I forgot it was even a goal. On the flip of that, it was also humbling to realize there are some goals I haven't achieved (TATW in shoes, nemesis). In the grand scheme of things though, I feel like I've gotten most of the big ones taken care of.

In exciting news, Age and I are going to Pittsburgh on Saturday to shred with Steel City, and to watch my favorite band (Girl Talk) in concert. It'll be my first shred in over 10 days, and I'm stoked to see the Pittsburgh crew.

Wicked.
I totally feel the same about reading old entries and being blown away by myself :P And also about seeing that I've achieved big goals that I'd semi-aimed for a while back without even realizing it.
